DESIGN 6 SOUND BUILDING STUDIO, 2011 UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT AUSTIN INSTRUCTORS: DANELLE BRISCOE, MATTHEW FAJKUS

LOCATED ON A THIN STRIP OF LAND SEPARATING THE HIGHRISES OF DOWNTOWN AUSTIN AND THE SHORE OF TOWN LAKE, AN IMMEDIATE NEED FOR A DEFINED URBAN EDGE WAS APPARENT. IN ORDER TO PRESERVE THE JOGGING TRAIL AND THE SURROUNDING PARK AREA SO CAREFULY INSTITUTED BY LADYBIRD JOHNSON, A BUILDING THAT CLIMBED OVER AND DOWN THE SITE WAS PROPOSED. THE PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THE SWIM CENTER IS AS AN URBAN PARK, AND SECOND, FOR AQUATICS. THE BUILDING GROWS OUT OF THE DOWNTOWN GRID AND ROOTS ITSELF INTO THE LAKE, CREATING A CONTINUATION OF LANDSCAPE THAT ALLOWS PEOPLE TO ENJOY THE BEAUTY OF THE SURROUNDING PARK AND LAKE WITHOUT DISTURBING THE EXISTING PARK AND JOGGING TRAIL. THE CONCRETE RIGID FRAME BANDS THAT MAKE UP THE STRUCTURE OF THE SWIM CENTER SERVE MULTIPLE FUNCTIONS. FIRST, THE GREEN ROOF HELPS TO COOL THE BUILDING AS WELL AS PROVIDE AN EXTENSION OF THE PARK THAT IS AT STREET LEVEL. THE SLOPING NATURE OF THE BANDS ALLOW FOR DRAINAGE INTO RAIN WATER COLLECTION TANKS, BUT ALSO PROVIDE A SAFE 1:12 ADA SLOPE FOR ENTERING THE ROOF AREA FROM THE STREET. WHERE THE BANDS ARCH OVER AND PLANT THEMSELVES INTO THE LAKEFRONT, A FORM OF AN ARCADE IS CREATED OVER THE LOWER LEVEL ENTRANCE AND JOGGING TRAIL, SHADING INHABITANTS AND ALSO CASTING SHADOW ONTO THE FACADE TO ALLEVIATE HEAT. LASTLY, THE REMOVAL OF CROSS SECTIONAL AREA OF EACH BAND SERVES A DOUBLE PURPOSE BY CREATING THE VOIDS TO PROVIDE SPACE FOR HVAC DUCTS AS WELL AS A SMALL DEPTH FOR PLANTING ON THE ROOF. 07
