“INTRODUCING THE IMPORTANCE OF CULTURAL AND SOCIAL FRAMEWORKS FOR THE COMMUNITY’ WELLBBEING”

HISTORY

SITE ANALYSIS > UNIVERSITY SQUARE WHICH IS ADJACENT TO THE SITE PROVIDES A LARGE OPEN SPACE AND SEATING AREAS, HOWEVER, THERE IS A LACK OF ORGANISATION AND SHADED AREAS THAT PROVIDE DISCOMFORT FOR THE VISITORS. THIS HAS BEEN AN ISSUE DUE TO ITS COLD SEATING MATERIAL (STONE) AND SHADING ELEMENT (TREE CANOPY).

WHY?

- THERE IS A SMALL NUMBER OF REGISTERED SITES OF CULTURAL AND SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE IN MELBOURNE AREA. - ADJACENT PARKS LACK OF ‘STORY’ AND INTIMATE PLACE, ALSO WERE INFLUENCED BY EUROPEAN STYLE GARDENS WHICH GIVES AN OPPORTUNITY TO CREATE A GARDEN THAT IS INSPIRED BY ABORIGINAL AUSTRALIA. - STRENGTHEN THE COMMUNITY AS A PART OF RECONCILIATION. - PROVIDE KNOWLEDGE ABOUT INDIGENOUS CULTURE AS AN EXTENSION OF THE EDUCATION PRECINCT.

THIS FOCUS WILL BE RESOLVED THROUGH AN INDIGENOUS MEDICINE GARDEN AS AN ACTIVE GESTURE OF LANDSCAPE THAT INTRODUCES THE IMPORTANCE OF CULTURAL AND SOCIAL FRAMEWORKS FOR THE COMMUNITY’ WELLBEING. IT IS A PLACE FOR CONTEMPLATION AND HEALING THAT ACKNOWLEDGES THE HISTORY OF INDIGENOUS CULTURE IN THE AREA.

BASED ON THE ANALYSIS IDENTIFIED 0m 1m ABOVE, THIS PROJECT WANTS TO FOCUS ON CREATING A SPACE THAT ENHANCES THE WELLBEING OF THE VISITORS, MAINLY UNIVERSITY STUDENTS AND PROFESSIONAL WORKERS IN CARLTON.

SITE: 160 LEICESTER STREET

HOW?

INTRODUCING INDIGENOUS CULTURE THROUGH NATIVE MEDICINE PLANTS THAT CREATES A STORY TELLING JOURNEY AND IMPROVE WELLBEING.

WHY?

- FOR PEOPLE TO BETTER APPRECIATE AND UNDERSTAND THE VALUE OF NATIVE LANDSCAPE THAT BOLSTERS THE BIODIVERSITY. - NATIVE PLANTS ARE SUSTAINABLE, CLIMATE TOLERANT, REQUIRE LESS WATER, A FAVOURED HABITAT AND SOURCE OF FOOD FOR MANY NATIVE ANIMALS SUCH AS BIRDS AND BUTTERFLIES. - THE NATIVE PLANTS CAN BE USED TO IMPROVE THE IMMUNE SYSTEM, HEAL CERTAIN ILLNESS, AND BUILD FURNITURES.

GATHERING SPACE

WHY?

WHY?

- CREATE A SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENT TO ADDRESS THE CLIMATE CHANGE AND URBAN ECOLOGIES.

HOW?

- RAINWATER COLLECTION FROM ADJACENT BUILDING WILL BE USED AS AN IRRIGATION SYSTEM. - RUNOFF WATER FROM THE STREET WILL BE CHANELLED AND ABSORBED BY THE GARDEN BEDS. - VEGETATIONS WILL BE PLANTED ACCORDING TO THE LEVEL OF WATER SENSITIVE. I.E. VEGETATION THAT NEEDS MORE WATER WILL BE PLANTED ON THE NORTHERN SIDE TO CAPTURE MOST OF THE RUNOFF WATER. THE LEAST WATER REQUIRED PLANTS WILL BE PLANTED ON THE SOUTHERN EAST SIDE AS IT WILL LESS LIKELY TO CAPTURE THE WATER. THESE STRATEGIES WILL BE DESIGNED IN CONJUNCTION OF DIFFERENT MATERIALITY. CONCRETE WILL BE USED AS AN IMPERMEABLE PAVING THAT DIRECTS THE WATER FLOW INTO THE GARDEN BEDS OR GRASS ONTO THE GROUND.

DEMOLITION

HOW?

- THE SITE THAT USED TO BE A MEMORABLE COMMUNITY PLACE FOR UNIVERSITY STUDENTS WAS DEMOLISHED IN 2016 AND SOME STUDENTS WROTE PETITIONS ABOUT RECLAIMING THE SITE WHICH SHOWS THE IMPORTANCE OF THE DEMOLISHED PUB. - THE UNIVERSITY SQUARE ADJACENT TO THE SITE LACKS OF COMFORT IN TERMS OF THE SEATING AND INTIMATE PLACE DUE TO THE ORGANISATION AND THE SIZE OF THE SQUARE, THEREFORE, THE SITE NEEDS A FRIENDLY ENVIRONMENT WHERE PEOPLE CAN RELAX AND SIT COMFORTABLY.

- NATIVE PLANTS WILL BE PLANTED ACCORDING TO THE LEVEL OF WATER SENSITIVE WITH A SHORT DESCRIPTION OF EACH VEGETATION. - WATERPUMPS WILL BE DESIGNED TO REMIND PEOPLE TO STAY HYDRATED.

ACCESSIBILITY

HOW?

WHAT?

- STEPPED FORM THAT ALLOWS SEATING AND ALSO ACT AS AN AMPI-THEATRE. - USE OF FRIENDLY MATERIAL SUCH AS LOCAL TIMBER AND GREEN LANDSCAPE. - SEVERAL PROGRAMS CAN BE HELD ON SITE, SUCH AS EVENTS, WORKSHOPS, PERFORMANCES, ETC.

- WHEELCHAIR ACCESS WITH RAMP 1:20 TO FOLLOW THE REGULATION. - PEDESTRIAN SHORTCUTS AS A STRATEGY TO DRIVE PEOPLE INTO THE SITE.
