a hundred years ago captain scott set out his its ill-fated race to the south pole. official photographer and cinematographer herbert ponting filmed almost every aspect of the expedition: the scientific work, life in camp and the local wildlife. most importantly, he recorded the preparations for the assault on the pole, giving us a real sense of the challenges faced. in 1924 he re-edited the footage into this remarkable feature. the bfi national archive has restored the film and introduced a new score by simon fisher turner.

at the end of the 19th century, brian sweeney fitzgerald dreamt of building an opera house in iquitos. he bought a steamer and purchased an unclaimed piece of land cut off from the amazon by a treacherous set of rapids. abandoned by his crew, he enlisted the natives to help him. this infamous film is a must for the big screen as the magnitude of what herzog and his crew took on in the filming is as extraordinary as the original tale it recounts.
