Reflections From the Chaps ~ April 11, 2011
The Healing Power of Nature Chaplain’s Reflection: Springtime has to be my favorite season of the year; it represents new life in both subtle and bold ways. The cherry blossoms have started to reveal themselves with an incredible display of splendor and now the tulips in my yard are opening up one by one as if they were to say, “Hello world; calm down and slow down … take a look at me”! The Japanese people take time to do just this, even having a special word for it called “hanami” or flower watching. Many families and friends will pack lunches and sit under the cherry trees to simply enjoy life; their lives, their lives with family and friends, and the life they see all around them in nature. Experts are now realizing that beyond good exercise, nutrition, and rest, it is very helpful to observe nature to reduce stress. In our challenging roles out here in FDNF, we all understand stress for sure, but I encourage each of you to find new ways to better handle it. Take a moment to spend time with and appreciate nature. It has a calming effect as we observe how new life always finds a way, even through the most difficult winters and storms. Oh, and for my Shipmates currently out on the high seas, I have found that even looking through a slide show or two of nature’s beauty on the computer does wonders for me; be creative! Take care and may God bless each and every one of you in all that you do. Food 4 Thought: “Break open a cherry tree and there are no flowers, but the spring breeze brings forth myriad blossoms.” –Ikkyu Sojun A Second Helping: “By cultivating the beautiful we scatter the seeds of heavenly flowers, as by doing good we cultivate those that belong to humanity.” –Robert A. Heinlein Dessert with a Smile: “All my life I have tried to pluck a thistle and plant a flower wherever the flower would grow in thought and mind.” –Abraham Lincoln
