Into a Portkey

Theatrical set design for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

The aim of my thesis is to summarize to the full all the influences that have characterized the birth of Harry Potter’s magical world; British culture, Mythology, the meaning of the Colors, Geometry, Numerology and Alchemy. From the Harry Potter saga, I chose the last volume since it’s main action is time travel and without it I would not have succeeded to enclose the most important themes in seven scenes.

Into a Portkey Technical scheme

I started to study the gears of the clock and its circular shape until I came up to the “machine concept. The scenic environment is a unique working system without the interruption of harmony between audience and by closing the curtain. I wanted to create a strong visual impact that reminded the foundations of an imposing structure, the whole magical atmosphere synthesize into a container that worked independently - that was the synthesis of the gear itself. A permanent scenic machine consisting of four rectangular towers, placed two on each side of the stage, with iron beams structure and with internal motorized platforms, sliding on iron tracks which, visually speaking, could magically break the immensity of each tower 11,50m high. Finally I inserted on each side of each tower an iron profile with a metal grid (as well as for security) that recalled the buttresses of these architectures.

Aida

Di Giuseppe Verdi

The scenic layout is very synthetic, reduced to its bone marrow and to its volumetric essentiality. Designing the scene changes, I conceived a diamond-like floor structure with entrance stairs and a central platform to create an evocative image of power . The three independent sectors at the center stage can rise from ground level. The scenes are framed by square walls that rotate on pins. Geometrism and the artist Arnoldo Pomodoro influenced me in the design.

The Lower depths Di Maksim Gor’kij

Gor’kij is considered one of the most important writers of Social Realism and many of his works highlight the fight against ignorance and tyranny. Originally it is set in a landfill where the characters sleep and “dream, each in their way, for an unlikely escape from misery in which they are imprisioned.” In my set we find ourselves in an Imperialist Russia and I broke the ceiling to highlight the lower level / floor of the characters. The contrast of warm colors within the decayed dormitory and the cold background of Russia accentuates the social detachment of which Gor’kij talks about.

Gattaca

Di Andrew Niccol

A fan-fiction film set in a possible future where you can change small imperfections directly manipulating the DNA. I idealized the hospital / study facility where the various experiments take place; Abstractionism in its form, the great shell and the immense stair a remember the DNA thread, they are influenced by Kandinsky’s painting. Inside at the first floor we find some huge walls that can rotate on a central pivot, creating dynamic beams of light. On the second floor we have the gym and the various offices closed by glossy black walls. Outside, the water that descends from the two side pyramids descends into the external fountain that embrace the entrance stairs. I wanted to create a dynamic futuristic place that could embrace natural elements.

Art can broadcast emotions directly from it’s colors and forms on music rhythm “Eerything starts from a dot”. – Kandinsky –

Corvus Corax Di Beatrice Baldacci

Short film selected at the 70th edition of the Cannes festival. Michael, an introverted and shy 18-year-old boy, is shooting a film on animals with his friends. For artistic and economic reasons the troupe renounces the idea of having real animals and decides that each member of the crew have to interprets a character, wearing each an animal costumes. Michael begins to feel comfortable with his character and to make up confidence with his own crow costume, so much to start wearing it even outside the sets. Finally, Michael realizes how comfortable he is, disguised as a crow and begins to assume the behaviors of the animal. In the end, Michael will choose to live the rest of his bird life. The atmosphere is gloomy and has to represent the crow characteristics.
