CONCEPT

The design concept was generated from the culture of centural China, where a symbol was discoverd -- Lotus and crane rectangular pot. Based on the understanding of local culture, we emphasized the importance of the two towers in the design.

NEXUS ENGINEERING INSTITUTE Critic: Bradley Walters Studio Partner: Carmen Chan, Jonathan Jimenez Fall 2014, University of Florida The idea of filtration started as a combination of the words edge, porosity, transition, view, and entrance. These words were derived from a series of phenomenological events that exist on the site, such that they affect the way that people impose themselves on the site as well as how the site dictates the interactions between the occupants. Of filtration, the main categories became threshold, sequence, and residue. Through the dissection of the word filtration and it’s possible meanings both spatially and physically, and how the two can start to develop the experience of a person, we created spaces that would envelope the movement of people as they pass through, in, and around the building. This became the occupied void spaces, the atriums in between the three building volumes. The idea was that the filtration process would present itself in the passage between the buildings as a varying mixture of the words threshold, sequence, and residue. The bridge starts to dictate the placement of the other programs surrounding it and creates unique moments of views between itself and the surrounding programs in all three volumes.

The program of the project follows the early division of the three volumes in to public, semi-public, and private categories from right to left as well as vertically from bottom to top. These categories are based off of the experience of the student and what is public or private to them. The role of the bridge in this aspect is that it serves as the spatial link between students and faculty where they can begin to occupy and interact physically or visually to different kinds of programs whether public or private.

A Site of Mnemonic Landscape Hangzhou is the capital and largest city of Zhejiang Province in Eastern China. Hangzhou grew to prominence as the southern terminus of the historicalGrand Canal and has been one of the most renowned and prosperous cities in China for much of the last millennium, due in part to its beautiful natural scenery. The city's West Lake is its best-known attraction. Hangzhou is renowned for its historic relics and natural beauty. One of Hangzhou's most popular sights is West Lake, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The West Lake Cultural Landscape covers an area of 3,323 ha (8,210 acres) and includes some of Hangzhou's most notable historic and scenic places. There is an old saying "Up above there is heaven; down below here are Suzhou and Hangzhou." This phrase has a similar meaning to the English phrases "heaven on Earth" or "God's country". The image on the left corner is a landscape painting, and the author Li Song completed this master piece 800 years ago. I found this old painting and felt excited that the original landscape features were retained by the painting 800 years ago. This landscape painting is the reason I chose Hangzhou to perform my research and design project. In ancient China, artists preferred to design their city based on existing natural landscapes. They consider to develop the city as a whole landscape system. Buildings intervened within the mountains and used them as background, and pagodas and houses faced to the lake to procure beautiful landscape views.

EVENING BELL-TOLL AT THE SOUTH SCREEN MOUNT

I used methodology from the D5 "Landscape" studio to construct my own gestures of scenery, which included the temple facing the lake with the mountain in the background. My initial physical model illustrated an analysis of sound movement through both fluid and solid arrangements of space. For example, the back and forth rhythm of sound movement created a dialogue between man and nature by producing and receiving audible signals.

Evening's breath rises from South Screen, The gentle breeze seems as thin as paper. From the temple beyond comes the toll of the evening bell, Gliding over the empty river's flow.

Research & Design Process


As an architect concern, who always obererve the world 3 dimentially. In this case, I tried to transform 2 dimentional ink diagrams into 3D models. Compare to the scale of Landscape, the architecture seems to be a tiny dedicated JOINT fixed into earth. And the conditions of joints could be categorized various based on different contexts: Joints connecting levels/ edges Joints in between surfaces Joints cohering vertical and horizontal sapces Apply the natual context (ten scenes) into the joint conditions, and choose one to develop into modeling.
