TO LOSE YOURSELF: A VOLUPTUOUS SURRENDER. TO BE LOST IS TO BE FULLY PRESENT, AND TO BE FULLY PRESENT IS TO BE CAPABLE OF BEING IN UNCERTAINTY AND MYSTERY. - REBECCA SOLNIT

THE LOST “T he Lost ” deri ves its desig n obje c ti ves from the semantics of the word lost [ lawst, lost] : 1. Unable to find your way ; not knowing your where abou ts: “I am lost in the maze” . 2. To be full y c onsume d or e ng rosse d : “ I am lost in m y thoughts”.

A por tfolio x C hanel D ehond

It is no long er incide ntal for ci viliz a tion to be c ome lost in their where abou ts. Withou t being challe ng e d in this inna te way, humanit y strug g les to inter nalize and a dapt, stunting their overall g row th . “ The L ost” is a day sp a designe d for the experie nc e of psycholog ic al cul ti va tion and he aling, w hich in tur n transla tes into the physic al. T he p a t ron e nters the sp a with pre c onc eptions t rig g ere d by intima te memories of “ the maze. ” “ The Lost ” t ransfor ms itself in time; se c ond s, hours, days, se asons and annum, evol ving the perc ei ve d experie nc e. One of the thre e na ti ve cro ps to Cambridg e, maize, is symbolic of the sp a’s eleva tional me tamorphosis. In moving throughou t, the p a tron be c omes lost in the field s of archite c tural obsta cles and de a d e nd s ( prog ramma tic loci) , c a tal ysing a reversion to their primal se nses for navig a tion. *T he sight of homog e ne ous polishe d sur fa c es, the sound of rust ling and cha t ter, the fe el of hot ste am, the smell of lave nder and the taste of mint infuse d air. * As the humans na ti ve animal sur fa c es, the te ch nolog ic al world disintegra tes, and they be c ome lost in se nsualit y. T he romantic fic tion be c omes a re alit y and for the e ntire t y of a day, the being is fre e.

BRIGHTER FRAGMENTS ADVANCE WITHIN THEIR LUMINOUS TERRAIN, WHILE DARKER PORTIONS RECEDE AND SHRINK, EACH ACTUALLY INTENSIFYING THE OTHER. - HENRY PLUMMER

THE VOYEUR “The Voyeur ” is an exclusive masterbatoreum that exists within, around, behind, and under The Louvre in Paris. The concept is that of an accommodation for the elite. The entr yways are hidden amongst the Louvre and can only be accesse d by the knowing or the truly adventurous. One can spend the night in a chamber, hiding in a thick se c tion below the sur face of the Louvre, or have a romantic view looking out through the Venus de Milo upon a murale d ceiling. There are more private areas with a sing le view outwards and gathering areas in the depths of the most public spaces of the Louvre. In clinical psycholog y, voyeurism is define d as the sexual interest or prac tice of spying on others engage d in intimate behaviors. The principal charac teristic is that the voyeur does not relate dire c tly with the subje c t of their interest, who is of ten unaware of being obser ve d. The archite c tural approach was to separate “The Voyeur ” from The Louvre with a thin par ti-wall, like a large canvas painting or tapestr y in the galler y. The interior of “The Voyeur ” would be kept dark and The Louvre would remain light, allowing the elite to se eming ly fe el the eyes of the museumgoers watching them through the canvas (when in ac tualit y they are just viewing the ar t).

A por tfolio x C hanel D ehond

In order to catalyze sexual arousal in humans, “The Voyeur ” delves into the sensual and the erotic, through a carefully designe d archite c ture.

THE CØØP

A por tfolio x C hanel D ehond

*Bowk* bowk* *bowkaaaahh!* “The Cøøp” is a light-frame timber food car t, fabricate d out of 1x1” pine square dowel offcuts. It is painte d ne on, as a nod to the color ful stre et markets of Bombay, the blinking lanterns of Hanoi, and the explosive aromatic spices of Iran. The signage and menu is designe d alongside the matche d chef ’s, “Me & Mine” and “Citizen Catering,” and hung from the gable d canopy. “The Cøøp’s” design intent is to help raise money and awareness for The Stop Communit y Food Centre’s critical anti-hunger and anti-pover t y programs, while giving Torontonian’s a *pe ep*-load to talk about!

THE OCULUS

A por tfolio x C hanel D ehond

Since its opening in March, Santiago Calatrava’s “Oculus” transpor t hub at the World Trade Center has garnere d a lot of criticism for its exorbitant price tag. ( The building cost nearly $4 billion to realize.) But look beyond the numbers, and there is something compelling about the physical form of the thing. L ike all of Calatrava’s work, the struc ture invites visual interpretations— spiky fish or a bird, a dinosaur or a he dgehog.
