Olympic medallist Anyika opens town’s new Aldi store OLYMPIC medallist Anyika Onuora helped open the new Aldi store in Maghull last week. Anyika, who was a member of the bronze medal winning British women’s 4x400 metres relay team at the 2016 Rio Olympics cut the ribbon at the Northway store which will employ 40 staff. In celebration, the athlete gave away complimentary bags of fresh fruit and vegetables to the first 30 customers in the queue. She will also deliver a virtual assembly for pupils at a local school, focussing on the benefits of eating healthy food and the importance of exercise and believing in yourself. She will also talk to pupils about her experience of competing as an Olympian and her training regime. In addition, Aldi Maghull will offer pupils at a local school the

opportunity to win a £20 gift voucher to spend at the new store. The children will asked to create a poster to show what healthy eating means to them. Anyika said: “It will be great to speak with children about the importance of eating healthily and how it can be fun to plan and prepare meals as a family. Hopefully I’ll inspire the pupils to keep active and try different sports.” The Aldi store is calling on local charities and food banks to register with Neighbourly, a community engagement platform that links businesses to charitable organisations in the local community. They will be able to collect surplus food and perishable products, such as fruit, vegetables and baked goods, seven days a week. Charities that would like to partner up with the store should email aldi@neighbourly.com.

‘ROAD IS NEEDED FOR NEW HOMES’ CLAIM SLAMMED Department of Transport’s assertion that expansion of Port not sole driver behind Rimrose Valley scheme is untrue, say councillors Report by Tom Martin CLAIMS made by the Department for Transport that housebuilding is a factor behind the need to create a new road through Rimrose Valley Country Park have been shot down by Sefton councillors. In a letter sent to the Save Rimrose Valley group, which was a response to the its concerns over the planned road, a spokesperson for DfT said the ongoing expansion of the Port of Liverpool “is not the sole driver of congestion nor of the scheme.” It went on to suggest that “new housing and development patterns locally” are also to blame. In its own letter to the DfT, Sefton councillors have refuted this claim and have

demanded that they publicly retract this assertion. The road proposal has caused huge controversy since it was first announced as it would result in a dual carriageway being built through the middle of Rimrose Valley country park, linking the motorway network at Switch Island to the port. Deputy Leader Cllr John Fairclough and cabinet member for planning, Cllr Daren Veidman jointly wrote: “We wish to reaf-

firm in the strongest terms that to suggest that anything other than the Port and its expansion is the main driver of congestion and therefore the suggested need for a new road through the Rimrose Valley is untrue.” They point to the council’s own Local Plan, which identified no requirement for new road infrastructure as a result of proposed housing developments.
