Heartbreak for family over dad
INSIDE THIS WEEK: Incident at gypsy site was not knife crime, say police Report by Kenny Parker MERSEYSIDE Police has reassured residents that an incident that took take place near to the Romany Gyspy camp in Melling in which a man was injured was a ‘minor dispute.’ An appeal is still waiting to be heard regarding the occupation of the site on Spurriers Lane by the gypsy family. Despite failing to receive planning permission to build at the site, which the family own, foundations were laid and caravans moved on to it. Sefton Council ordered that the former pony paddock be restored and caravans moved off, but the family appealed to the Planning Inspectorate and they are awaiting a decision. It is understood that on Tuesday, September 10 a member of the travelling community, aged 16 or 17, ran into the nearby Carla Lane Animals In Need sanctuary for help after being injured in an incident. There was speculation he had been stabbed and local residents were worried that police were not carrying out an investigation because the youth had not made a statement. Police have confirmed, however, that the youth was not stabbed, but sustained a minor injury to his arm. A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: “We are happy to confirm that there was not a stabbing in Melling but a minor dispute where a male sustained a minor arm injury. “This is not a knife crime related incident. “A male did attend the animal sanctuary with a minor injury to his arm which is believed to be caused due to an altercation with another person. “His family are not providing further details who the altercation was with and the ambulance service have confirmed that injuries were not consistent with a knife wound. “Had this been a stabbing we would investigate.”
