MP VOWS TO FIGHT ON FOR FUNDS TO REBUILD ‘CRUMBLING’ SCHOOL Council told by government it should have ‘robust plans’ in place to maintain the facility Report by Kenny Parker SEFTON Council has been told by the government that it should have “robust plans in place to manage school buildings effectively” following requests from MP Bill Esterson for funding to rebuild Lydate Primary School. The MP has promised to continue the fight to secure funding to rebuild the “crumbling” school on Lambshear Lane which had to close for a time in November last year over safety fears for pupils after pieces of concrete fell off the roof. Children had to have lessons at Maghull High which accommodated them until the school reopened in January following emergency repairs. Mr Esterson is calling on the government to spend £5million to rebuild the school saying the £650,000 earmarked by Sefton Council for refurbishment work was a “sticking plaster” and a “false economy.” He said the building is “crumbling” and so cold children have to wear their coats during lessons. Mr Esterson added: “There are leaks from the roof and concrete and plaster falling from walls and ceilings. This is completely unacceptable.
Lydiate Primary School.
“A huge £650,000 has been earmarked by Sefton Council to spend on a rewire and general refurbishment at the school, but this is just papering over the cracks and the ongoing maintenance costs risk eating up huge amounts of the school’s budget. “Spending money to make do and mend is just money down the drain. “The wiring needs to be replaced. Energy bills are absurdly high because of the poor insulation. “But all the repairs in the world are only delaying the inevitable. It needs a new build. Anything else is a false economy.” The Department for Education said Sefton Council received over £1.5m to invest in maintained schools during the financial year 2019–20, plus individual schools were allocated a total of £350,000 to spend
on their own capital priorities. The DfE also said that the Secretary of State has set out the capital funding routes currently available for the school and the department is in touch with Sefton Council about its condition. A spokesperson for the DfE said: “Sefton local authority has responsibility for keeping its school buildings in a safe condition and they receive an annual allocation to invest in this. “We expect all local authorities, governing bodies and academy trusts to have robust plans in place to manage school buildings effectively. “We have committed £23 billion to deliver new school places, rebuild or refurbish buildings in the worst condition and deliver thousands of condition projects across the school estate.”
