CHAMINADE CENTER FOR EXCELLENCE | SUMMER 2019

1

Imagine. Learn. Create. Every summer the Chaminade Center for Excellence offers programs designed to inspire, engage, and empower young minds. These goals are central to our Marianist philosophy and driven to design a child-centered experience where campers are engaged becoming self-directed learners, leading to empowerment. This summer, we have created several new “classes that will be part of our Ste[+a]m and Great Books Academies. We are sure that these new offerings will challenge and inspire students to learn new things but in fun and exciting ways. We strive to have our campers tap into their exploratory nature, engage them in learning that feels like play, and encourage them to keep discovering – now and for years to come. These two summer academies empower students to adopt a design-thinking mindset through compelling activities, projects, and problems that build upon each other and relate to the world around them. As students engage in hands-on activities in science, literature, writing, language, math, art and more they become creative, collaborative problem solvers and critical thinkers all while making friends and having great summer fun!

Summer 2019 CHAMINADE’S SUMMER STE[+a]M ACADEMY FOR GRADES K-5. Science Exploration students learn through exploration and discovery. Through Science Exploration, students become hands-on problem solvers and learn to collaborate with their fellow students. For students in grades K-5 Demand for STEM careers shows no signs of slowing down. For students to become tomorrow’s STEM leaders, they need to experience STEM first. At the core of each of Science Exploration’s STEM solutions is hands-on, inquiry-based investigation that helps students become tomorrow’s STEM leaders and innovators by letting them experience science. As students dive into the investigations found in each scope, they develop their own contexts and meanings for the scientific concepts they are learning, retain more knowledge, and develop deeper understandings of the world around them. Each Science Exploration module engages students in cross-disciplinary activities that spark a lifelong love of learning and build knowledge and skills in areas including computer science, engineering, and biomedical science. In addition, each module empowers students to develop essential skills such as problem solving, critical and creative thinking, communication, collaboration, and perseverance. The curriculum is different each week, so there’s no repetition! Come for one week, or all six weeks this summer! INTRODUCTION TO ONLINE LEARNING AND TECHNOLOGY Entering 9th grade

Students at Chaminade are introduced to the concept of online learning in this course. Since so many students today engage in distance education as part of their college career, this course introduces the student to important principles that will enable their success in this type of learning. Concepts like time management, netiquette and qualities of a successful online student are examined. The course then introduces the student to various aspects of online academic technologies that will assist them at their time here at Chaminade. Components of Microsoft Word, Outlook and PowerPoint are examined, as well the use of Office 365. The course then transitions to examining other online academic technologies used here at Chaminade. These skills include: navigating library databases, using online tools and websites, using Naviance (Chaminade’s counseling and college application program) as well as file management and backup techniques. The final goal of the class is to put all of the skills together and be able to use these skills in real world situations. Since this is an online course, accountability and responsibility become very important. The class will be broken into five oneweek-long modules that will have a certain number of assessments due at the end of every week. The modules start the Monday of every week and all assessments will be due by Sunday at 10 p.m. Students should make sure to give themselves enough time to complete all of the required assessments for that week, because any assignment not turned in for the module by midnight Sunday will be considered late and lose credit. Students will receive their Chaminade laptops during this class session (pending manufacturer delivery). July 8–August 11 A MANDATORY ORIENTATION SESSION FOR THIS COURSE WILL BE HELD Monday, July 8 from 8:00 - 10:00 a.m. OR 2:30 - 4:30 p.m. (For students remediating this class, this orientation session is not required) Fee: $475
