Photography Level This workshop is aimed at photographers of all abilities. You will however gain more from the workshop if you are fairly conversant with your cameras controls and the basic principles of general photography. We will however be on hand all day to assist by explaining
relevant techniques, camera settings etc. to help you to take the best photographs.

Photographic equipment required To get the best out of this workshop a good quality Digital SLR is recommended. Lenses, ideally a lens with a focal length of 300 - 400mm is recommended. Another lens we recommend is a macro lens. You don’t need it for Apenheul or Ouwehands but it could be useful for Burgers, especially if you enjoy photographing butterflies and flowers. Other accessories (not necessary but might come in handy): A rubber lens hood (for shooting through glass), monopod (ideally no tripod), plastic bag (for rain cover and humidity), extension tubes, flash (macro or flash gun), 1.4x teleconverter. If don’t own a recommended lens or you would like to try a different lens/camera we highly recommend LensesForHire. It may be that, for example, you would like to use this as an opportunity to experiment with a specific lens in a “real wildlife situation” before considering buying one. Please use CHAMELEON2017 for a 10% discount at www.lensesforhire.co.uk This will be an intensive workshop and you can expect to take home lots of great images. Three days of photography can produce a lot of images so make sure you either bring enough memory cards or arrange for a download facility such as an external hard drive or a cloud service. There will be no access to power for charging batteries at the zoos so please make sure you bring adequate quantities. You can recharge your batteries when we get back at the hotel. Please don’t forget to bring your charger and a European plug adaptor! If you have any particular questions regarding equipment please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Travel arrangements to and from The Netherlands/Schiphol Airport The cost of transport within the UK and flights to and from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport are excluded. This is done to give you full flexibility to choose your preferred airport and time of departure. Please book your outbound flight to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport such that your arrival time is no later than 15:30CET on the 15th May. The departure time of your inbound flight to the UK should be no earlier than 16:00CET on the 19th May. Please be aware that you will need to ensure you have sufficient luggage allowance especially if taking heavy camera equipment. We will provide you with details regarding where to meet at Schiphol airport nearer the time of the workshop. PLEASE BE AWARE THAT YOU SHOULD NOT BOOK YOUR FLIGHTS UNTIL WE HAVE CONFIRMED TO YOU THAT THE WORKSHOP WILL GO AHEAD. FEW AIRLINES PROVIDE REFUNDS. Booking flights without having received this confirmation will be at your own risk.

Hotel Throughout the workshop, we will be staying at the Van der Valk Hotel Apeldoorn - de Cantharel: https://www.vandervalkapeldoorn.nl/en Van der Valk guests can make use of its fitness centre, which is free of charge. Other wellness activities such as sauna, beauty treatments, heated waterbeds, which can be used at a cost. Should you wish to make use of these services, arrangements can be made directly with the hotel staff. Use of wifi is free of charge.

Food and drinks Breakfast and evening meals will be enjoyed at the hotel and is included in the cost of the workshop. Drinks during the day and at/after dinner will be at your own expense. Lunch can be purchased at the zoos and is excluded from the cost of the workshop. The zoos offer nice restaurants for hot and cold beverages, snacks and meals. At Burgers Zoo, lunch can be purchased from “The Bush” which we highly recommend. Drinks or other refreshments enjoyed at the hotel are not included in the cost of the workshop. We kindly request for you to settle these directly with the hotel staff rather than putting it onto your room. As you will be sharing a room, this will avoid confusion on who needs to settle what.

Fitness level, clothing and the weather Apenheul, Ouwehands and Burgers Zoo are large zoos. There will be a reasonable amount of walking involved throughout the workshop. The parks are well maintained but we do recommend good walking/hiking shoes especially for in “The Bush” at Burgers Zoo. Walking in the jungle, crossing small streams could mean it may be a bit slippery. All three zoos have plenty of areas where you can sit, relax and buy refreshments. We will spend most of our time at Apenheul and Ouwehands outdoors, Burgers will involve a combination of both outdoors and indoors. The average temperature for May is around 18C, we advise to bring suitable warm waterproof clothing preferably with layers so you can remain comfortable should conditions change. We recommend bringing sun lotion as May can also offer very sunny days. You will need to be able to carry your camera equipment from location to location. A good camera bag will therefore be essential and some people prefer to use a trolley bag. The walkways are all “buggy friendly” so that would be OK and if you want to explore the rougher terrain in “The Bush” one of us can look after your camera bags. Whilst Apenheul, Ouwehands and Burgers Zoo are suitable for wheelchairs or guests with specific mobility requirements, our mode of transport will not be specifically adapted. However, if you have any particular questions or requirements please contact us directly so we can aim to cater for your needs.
