Fundraising

The Big Build appeal

Challengers’ schemes are reliant on fundraising, and the generosity of our amazing supporters. Challengers fundraising and communications work raises awareness, profile and all important funds for Challengers schemes. We are hugely appreciative of the support we receive and work hard to ensure we are innovative in our fundraising approaches and that our communications with donors demonstrate the impact their support has.

In 2013 Challengers undertook our Big Build Appeal to build a new Play Centre and HQ in Guildford. This project enabled us to increase the number of children visiting Challengers Guildford Play Scheme to 30 per day by providing a dedicated, purpose built play space for the children. The project also gave the HQ team a more effective office space, where everyone could work together more efficiently.

46% of our income in 2013 was from voluntary sources We are always on hand to help, whether it’s making posters, leaflets, providing tins and buckets, speaking at events, selling raffle tickets – we will do whatever we can to make our supporter’s fundraising easier!

Challengers needed to raise a total of £1.1million for the project, alongside our existing fundraising target - which was a tall order!

With the support of our Big Build Committee, generous individuals, businesses, community groups, Surrey County Council and Guildford Borough Council, we reached this target and the building was completed on time and on budget. The first day of play for the children on Saturday 4th January was fantastic, with lots of excited squeals and giggles from parents and children!

The new centre has had such an impact on Guildford play; the children come in every day excited to play in such a wonderful building and every family has been in awe. I am so proud to show round new staff, new families and children and love seeing the expression on their faces! Challengers has always been filled with vibrancy, fun and excitement, and I am absolutely over the moon to have a building to run out of which now reflects that. Thank you to everyone who helped! I’m always keen to support Challengers, in whatever way I can. I’ve attended their quiz evenings, jazz nights and even taken on their 3 Peaks Challenge! It’s been great fun, everyone is so friendly and most importantly I know that in supporting Challengers I am making a real difference to local children and their families.

Our supporters are great ambassadors andTrust work tirelessly to raise funds. In return we ensure that the money works extra hard for the children, young people and families who rely on Challengers schemes. We aim to make the most of every penny… Out of £1 we raise 90p goes direct to play and leisure schemes for disabled children and young people.
