“Success is an Attitude...” Issue 12 - 12th March 2018

I recently shared in our ‘Lenten’ assemblies the inspiration that Jane Goodall had on me as a teenager. For those of you who don’t know, she is a world-renowned primatologist, anthropologist and humanitarian who dedicated her life to understanding chimpanzees; going on to work in conservation and as a UN Messenger of Peace.

While her work with Chimpanzees was fascinating, it was the fact that she had dedicated her life to the study of ‘one thing’ that specifically captured my imagination. At 16, I hadn’t considered doing just ‘one thing’ with my life; my father had had several very different jobs and I saw that as the norm. So, as I explored my options for A-Levels and beyond, I decided I had to find the ‘one thing’ that I could dedicate my life to – something in which I could make a difference.

Now, Jane didn’t wake up one morning, degree in hand, and say I’m going to study Chimpanzees. In fact, she didn’t have a degree and had to be coaxed into doing her PhD. She just knew she loved animals and Africa, and eventually she found her ‘one thing’. I was reminded of this when Mr Giles and I took 20 Year 11 students to the ATG training centre in Aylesbury to find out more about apprenticeships. Not everyone follows the same path and it can often seem that there is only one path to follow – GCSEs then A-Levels then University. In Jane’s case, she did not follow the traditional academic path. Nevertheless, she knew what she was passionate about. She had found her calling. It was lovely to sit and listen to the students ask questions about engineering and apprenticeships – it was very clear that a number of them know what their ‘one thing’ is and they were eager to find out what they need to do to take the next steps toward their future career. For me, it took two years of A-Levels, three years at University and a year working in retail before I realised that teaching would be the ‘one thing’ that, like Jane, I would be working at it until I retire. We are more than halfway through the busiest term of the school year and we have two groups of students who are trying to making important decisions about their futures. Year 11 are currently being interviewed about their next steps: A-Levels, a college course or an apprenticeship? The options are varied but it is important to remember that one path is not necessarily better than the other; the trick is to find the right path for you. And then we have Year 8 students, who are about to select their GCSE Options. It does not matter what path you take. It does not matter if you’ve found your ‘one thing’ already or if it takes you ten years to figure it out. What does matter is that you look to those who inspire you; look to the things that bring you joy; and look to the people around you who are there to support you: parents, friends and your teachers. We are here to help you take the next steps and perhaps, like Jane and I, you might just find your ‘one thing’ along the way.

After four months of rehearsal and with sold out performances, the cast of Blood Brothers (ranging from Year 7 to Year 11) stunned audiences with their mature approach to the GCSE text. Their professional approach and obvious talent as individuals and as an ensemble blew everyone away. Unfortunately snow stopped play and with the school closure, the postponement of the show was unavoidable leaving cast, crew and audiences devastated. But, as always, the show must go on, and on it will go; dates are to be confirmed after the practical drama examinations are completed this term. We send our sincere apologies that the show could not continue as planned and thank everyone for their ongoing support for the students and the drama department. Lucy Black Teacher of Drama

CCC student and Ten Pin Bowler Shines in Europe! Austin Taylor is a four-time member of Team England and has won nine gold medals while representing the country. He has now won another gold medal while competing in a tournament in Holland against the best of the best in Europe. Averaging 225 over 16 games of ten pin bowling, Austin beat the best 50 bowlers, ranging up to the age of 25 and was able to surpass all of them to attain the gold medal at the age of just 16. After successfully winning the qualifiers and bowling amazingly well, Austin was able to make the cut from 50 bowlers down to 4, culminating in a high tension final. In a best of three game final, Austin was able to come out on top with a 2-0 sweep, allowing him to earn the gold medal and asserting himself as the best under 25 bowler in Europe. Art Trips The Art Department organises a European trip every year in October for Year 12 and 13 Fine Art and Photography students. This is an excellent opportunity for the students to visit some of the best and most prestigious art collections in the world, gather invaluable ideas for their coursework projects, experience another culture and get to know each other and staff. Past trips include Paris, Barcelona, Madrid, Berlin and Amsterdam.

Did you know that the people living on the Polynesian islands (including New Zealand) mark their skin with patterns on their faces as well as their bodies. This is called tatu which is the origin of the word tattoo. Year 9 Art students have been leaning about the Maori culture and body adornment. These are examples of work in progress where students have created foam-board prints based on traditional Maori carvings.

Are you about to embark on some spring cleaning? The Art Department would be grateful for any donations of pencils, paint brushes etc. In fact any art materials that you may have! Please bring to the Art Department.

On Thursday, 22nd February, the year 10 Curriculum Leaders put on an excellent Options Fair for our Year 8 students. The Curriculum Leaders worked hard in after school training sessions and their lunch hours in order to produce a display board for each subject that they represent. Each board provided the Year 8 students with important information regarding the GCSE choices that they are about to make. They all looked great. The fair was well attended and some great conversations were had. A huge well done and thank you to all of the students and staff involved! Mrs Court

On Wednesday 28th February, Graham Brigginshaw (CEOP specialist for Bucks County Council) delivered some training to our parents relating to internet safety. The session was an hour in length and went through the main issues that young people face using social media. As part of this session, Graham also taught parents how to keep their details safe from fraud. The session was really insightful and well received. However, due to the weather conditions, we understand that some parents weren’t able to attend so we will be delivering this session again for parents who couldn’t make it later on in the year. Some of the websites that were highlighted were: • Think You Know - https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk – some good information for both parents and young people about the dangers surrounding social media and safety measures that can be taken • Young Minds – https://youngminds.org.uk/find-help/looking-after-yourself/online-pressures • CEOP – www.ceop.police.uk - brilliant site for reporting abuse and also for video footage that can be shared with families and discussed in relation to internet safety. • NSPCC - www.nspcc.org.uk/ShareAware Parents also received a free Digital Parenting magazine that we ordered to support this event. We hope that it was a worthwhile session and we look forward to welcoming Graham to The Chalfont Community College in the summer term for another session for parents. Next academic year he will return to do som sessions with the staff and students.

On 25th February Year 13 Performing Arts student Ellie Bindman made her television debut in an episode of “Call the Midwife”. Anyone who saw the show will testify that Ellie performed excellently and fitted seamlessly in with the experienced cast. She has received a number of excellent comments on her performance from fellow cast members and already there are calls from the Call The Midwife fan club to make Ellie a permanent cast member as Timothy’s girlfriend! Fingers crossed Ellie! Ellie may be familiar to you from various school shows and last summer she played “Sharpay” in High School Musical. Ellie has auditioned and won a place at drama school in London and will be taking up her place in September following her exams. We wish her all the best in her future acting career and hope she will remember us at CCC when she’s on the red carpet!

On Tuesday 6th March Yr7 students welcomed the debut author, Nicholas Bowling to our school. Nicholas’ book, Witchborn is set in the 1500’s and focuses on the country when it was deeply divided as medieval superstition has not yet given way to rational science. The book is about Alyce, the fourteen year old daughter of the local wise-woman. Alyce is forced to flee when a witch finder burns down her home and her mother is killed. Nicholas demonstrated the irrational tests witch finders carried out on their suspects to see if they were actually a witch. He also enlightened us on the processes of how a possible witch could have been identified. If you are interested in history, particularly Elizabethan, fantasy, magic and witchcraft, this is definitely a book for you. The book describes Tudor London - dirty, smelly, where the old medieval streets have rotting houses. It highlights how in Tudor times irrational superstition was a very powerful tool, particularly for those ruling. Nicholas talked to us about the importance of being resilient and not giving up. He said he received a number of rejections from publishers before one agreed to publish his novel. And even after that there were numerous amendments to be made including re-writes of certain sections. He also said it was crucial to listen to the opinions and views of others who have more experience.

On Tuesday, 27th February, we took a group of year 9 students to see Reading University. The day started with an interactive session about Higher Education. The students were split into teams and they had to answer questions online. Some of them were: ‘How many universities are there in the UK?’ ‘How many courses are available in the UK?’

The winning team won prizes.

The students then looked at prospectuses of various universities and answered questions about the different courses offered. They had to look up courses that interested them which cannot be taken in school, and then find out what qualifications were necessary to apply. Following this, the students had a tour of the campus. They visited a lecture theatre, the Student Union area, the restaurants, library and student information office. After lunch, the Reading student ambassadors talked to us about University life and the students were able to ask them questions. A few of the students have now expressed an interest in considering University in the future.

'An apprenticeship lets you get on-the-job training and study for qualifications at the same time. Some even give you a degree!' As part of the National Apprenticeship Week, we took 38 of our Sixth Form students to the National Apprenticeship Show at Sandown Park in Esher on Tuesday, 6th March. There were over 100 Companies on site, ready to explain their Apprenticeship programmes to our students. Companies such as Amazon, IBM, Vodafone, BT, Sky, Lloyds Bank, KPMG, Accenture, Siemens, Virgin Atlantic, The British Racing School, Schroders and Ernst & Young are all offering Apprenticeship Schemes to students, in the following areas: How old do you have to be to do an apprenticeship? You can become an apprentice from the age of 16 and up to any age. This is because an apprenticeship is a full-time job so you need to have finished school to start one. If you want to do a higher or degree apprenticeship instead of university, the chances are you'll do A-levels or a lower-level apprenticeship before starting at aged 18. What are the different types of apprenticeship? It might seem like there are a million different kinds of apprenticeship out there, but it all breaks down into four basic levels: •

Intermediate: Studying for up to 5 GCSEs.

Advanced: Studying for 2 A levels.

Higher: Taking a level 4 NVQ, Higher National Diploma or Foundation Degree.

Degree: Taking a Bachelor's or Master's degree.

What is a degree apprenticeship? Simply put, they're apprenticeships with degrees! They were introduced by the government in 2015 to offer young people a practical route into work as well as some academic background on their subject. They are one of the four main types of apprenticeship. Degree apprenticeships are set up by the employer, who works with a university to come up with a degree course which provides all the theoretical background behind the job. You'll graduate with a Bachelor's degree (like a B.Eng in Engineering) or a Master's degree (like an M.Eng). This makes it a level 6 apprenticeship for those who complete a Bachelor's, and a level 7 qualification for those who do a Master's. Once enrolled, your time is split between university and work. You'll be paid a wage by your employer throughout the course, which will last at least three years, but could go on longer. The trip was hugely successful and our students returned with lots of information. We are already looking forward to the event next year! A comment from one our Sixth Formers: The trip was a great eye opener in terms of opportunities. There were so many different career paths that I would have never considered. It seemed perfect for the type of person that would want to go down the line of engineering, housing, finance or marketing. In conclusion, the trip was a wonderful experience that enabled students to really dive into their own future and find out first-hand what the future may hold.

The Chalfonts Community College is working in partnership with School Lettings Solutions to utilise our facilities during evenings, weekends and school holidays, creating a community network with clubs and groups within the area. We would welcome donations of PE kit that students have grown out of or no longer need. This includes old trainers and football boots too. The PE department need as much spare kit as possible. It’s extremely useful for when students forget to bring theirs in. We can then give them spares to participate.

News from the Medical Room and Lost Property Medical Time-Out cards Students diagnosed with a medical condition, which may necessitate them leaving a lesson, are issued with a Medical Time-Out card so that they can leave the lesson, without having to explain the reason to the teacher and with as little disruption as possible to the rest of the class. Most students issued with these use them very responsibly but last term a small minority abused their use of them. If your child is issued with an M T-O card, please will you remind them that they need to use it sensibly as they are issued for their benefit. i.e. they don’t need to explain to each teacher why they need to leave the room.

Students using crutches following an operation or injury Please advise Miss Romney if your son or daughter has an operation, or sustains an injury, and needs to use crutches on their return to school, as we need to ensure that they are given any support needed to keep them safe. This includes a risk assessment being carried out.

Lost Property There is still a lot of ‘lost property’ being generated – please encourage students to look after their belongings – especially items of PE kit. All named lost property is returned to its owner via e-mails to the students’ tutor, so please name anything that is likely to get ’lost’. Un-named lost property is put on the table in the corridor outside the medical room for anyone to claim and is recycled after a couple of weeks as there isn’t any storage space for the quantities of items received.

Use of the Medical Room Reminder for students that the medical room is open at break and lunch-time for students to ‘Drop-In’. It is only open during and between lessons for accidents and medical emergencies.
