THE OPPORTUNITY: The DTI filming rebate incentive research, shows a continued growth in international film crews coming to SA to shoot films due to the competitive offerings. Such incentives have made filming in South Africa attractive proven through the rapid growth of inbound filmmakers approved for rebates from 3 in 2008 to 71 in 2013. In 2012/13, the total Qualifying South African Production Expenditure (QSAPE) for the 71 approved productions was R1.31 billion, and R255 million was disbursed to support 51 594 jobs. Such incentive programmes coupled with the world-class facilities available to filmmakers with i.e. studios, post production facilities, crew etc, creates an enabling environment for foreign filmmakers to produce their films.

Locations Africa expo ROI on Tourism: Igniting a concentrated influx of influential Film, TV and Commercial executives, through film there are tremendous business tourism opportunities for the various region who participate and who further their participation through inbound Media/Production tours. Through this tradeshow, South Africa will by default become the first port of call for the films/commercials business in Africa. The cities and regions could further promote their favorite film/stills/commercials interest points i.e. national monuments, bridges, railways, streets or certain parks etc. South Africa is already internationally renowed and positioned as the destination for Urban travelers looking for an authentic and cutting edge African Urban experience. The latter allowing us to position the country not only as an ideal hub for the African Film and TV business but also to ensure that the experiences of the visitors will positively impact on the objectives of the continental region. STORIES OF AFRICA – RE-ADAPTATION MARKET: In addition to the Tradeshow, there is a re-adaptation/remakes showcasing scripted content in the form of existing Film scripts, Books, Theatrical plays etc from Africa giving international producers a greater reason to film in Africa. Each product is hand selected through a jury of assessors who will look for unique stories and stories that will resonant in the international arena and of course make money at the box office. To ensure African participation on each film, there will be pre-attached a coproducer, writer and an additional skill possibly a composer, cinematographer, an editor or whichever that can be attached. The market is an element that has a presence alongside the tradeshow however the “book of projects” will be made available all year long extending the remakes and location Africa brand into a yearlong experience. All meetings will be set up by Stories Africa and Remakes Africa will ensure that the country of origin will attach funding assistance through the co-production in some form. The ROI for Locations Africa, is a dedicated audience of producers attending the market and becoming aware of the locations initiatives.
