Benny Carter’s Peaceful Warrior: A Tribute to Martin Luther King

Saturday October 29, 2011: 7:30pm

The big band jazz of Quincy Jones, Count Basie and Nelson Riddle, featuring guest vocalists Danny Qunitero and James Caddell singing their favorites in tribute to “Ol’ Blue Eyes.”

Benny Carter, composer of SRJO audience favorite “Kansas City Suite”, created this stunning suite in tribute to our nation’s great civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King. Also featured: Duke Ellington’s 1940 hit, Cottontail.

North by Northwest: Music of Seattle’s Jazz Composers

Jazz of the Harlem Renaissance II: All-Acoustic Jazz

Saturday April 21, 2012: 7:30pm

Saturday June 16, 2012: 7:30pm

The SRJO presents music from their favorite Seattle composers and arrangers, including Seattle’s own Quincy Jones, Jovino Santos Neto, William O. Smith, Bob Hammer, Milt Kleeb and Wayne Horvitz, as well as great pieces by members of the band. Selections include pieces from Birth of a Band—the definitive 1959 recording by Quincy’s first big band.

Following its sold-out Harlem Renaissance concerts in 2011, the SRJO presents more fantastic music from the 1920s and 1930s played as it was originally created - with original instrumentation and without amplification. KPLU radio host Robin Lloyd serves as narrator, with literary depictions of the life and spirit of the Harlem Renaissance period.
