Chabad of West Hills www.JewishMoorpark.com Program Guide

B”H Av, 5776 August, 2016 Dear Friend, It is with great pleasure that we present to you our expanded Program Guide and Jewish Calendar for the year 5777. Each year we assess the needs of our growing community and introduce new and innovative programs and events to fit the needs for every age and stage. This year, we are excited to present “Café Chabad”, the Sisterhood, new classes, and themed Shabbat dinners. The success of Chabad is based on the fact that it is not a particular branch of Judaism. It is an outlook. At Chabad, we recognize the importance of each individual regardless of affiliation or background. Every good deed, no matter how big or small, is significant and meaningful. With traditional Jewish ideals and values we will be able to strengthen Jewish pride and secure Jewish Continuity. Our financial support is derived solely from the generous contributions of local people like yourself. Like every Chabad chapter, we are not funded by any central organization and we must raise all necessary funds on our own. Please help us make it possible to continue our programs. With best wishes to you and your family for a Shana Tovah, a happy and healthy sweet new year. Sincerely yours,

Rabbi Shimy and Devorah L. Heidingsfeld This publication is dedicated to

the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi menachem M. Schneerson Who inspired the founding of Chabad Institutions worldwide. The Rebbe devoted his life to bringing Jews closer to Judaism and sending Shluchim, emissaries throughout the globe. The Chabad movement, with more than 3,000 centers, emphasizes Ahavat Yisroel, love of a fellow Jew, and the importance of living a Jewish life. The Rebbe’s passionate and uncompromising love for every Jew is legendary. His insistence that all Jews are equal, regardless of background, affiliation, or level of observance; his love and devotion to the land of Israel; and his love for G-d and Torah are the beacons of truth and love that continue to guide and inspire us in Moorpark, and throughout the world.

Is death painful for the soul? How does Judaism define life? How do we reconcile Judaism’s emphasis on the here and now with the eternality of the soul? Week 3- TRANSITION What happens to us when we die? Are souls able to communicate with us from heaven? Do our loved ones in heaven still care about us? What is the significance of the rituals associated with burial? How do these rituals assist the soul’s transition into the afterlife? Week 4 - AFTERLIFE What is reincarnation? How exactly does it work? Does Judaism believe in ghosts and spirits? Does everyone go to heaven ? Week 5- MOURNING Once the soul is in heaven, is it possible for it ascend to new spiritual heights? This lesson explores the emotional, spiritual, and practical steps of the grieving process and explains how we can benefit the soul once it’s already in the hereafter. FAQS & FACTS ABOUT CHABAD Q:

Will I feel out of place at Chabad? Do you have to be orthodox to participate?

A:

Chabad is inclusive and non-judgmental, and our programs are open to all Jews. In fact, the large majority of people who participate in programs at Chabad are not orthodox. The teachings of Chabad are imbued with the renowned Chassidic spirit and joy, but in no way is the commitment to an orthodox lifestyle a prerequisite to one's acceptance at Chabad functions. So put away your anxieties. You will be welcome. Plus Chabad does not require membership. Join the programs that interest you. You will enjoy them greatly.

Q:

Is it the goal of Chabad to make me orthodox?

A:

No! Chabad is an organization dedicated to providing each Jew, regardless of background, affiliation, or personal level of observance, the opportunity to deepen their level of Jewish knowledge and involvement. Chabad’s outstanding educational programs provide you the opportunity to expand your understanding of your Jewish Heritage in an open-minded and non-judgmental atmosphere.

Q:

How broad is the scope of Chabad's work worldwide?

A: Q: A:

Chabad today is the largest Jewish organization in the world. There are centers in 75 countries around the globe.

I don't know Hebrew, how can I follow the service? Don’t worry we will help you along. Explanations as well as various Prayers are recited in English.

Q:

Is Chabad Of Moorpark Financed By Chabad Headquarters?

A:

It is Chabad policy that each center is supported by the community it serves. All funding for local Chabad programs is solicited locally. All funds donated remain right here in our community.
