St Luke’s & Queen Street Church Congregational News

Lindisfarne Castle on Holy Island

May 2019

Dear friends The month of May always feels like the true start to the warmer weather. Fields start to show growth, trees sprout into greenery and flowers begin displaying their blooms. So it is also with the Church. For, with Easter behind us, we bring to mind how the earliest Christians forged their life together with the risen Christ. Of course, they must have tried out various things. Yet eventually they hit on the successful formula of sharing meals and worship in a ‘family’ setting. The result was a brightening Spring for all looking for God. And, in turn, this led to the glorious flowering of faithful communities all over the Roman Empire. We too in St Luke’s have, for a few years, been exploring new ways of worshipping as a ‘church family’. This has given rise to our ‘Welcome Services’. Held in the Halls, we start with a cup of coffee and a chat before building further our mutual sense of belonging in Christ with word and music. The service is rounded off with a light lunch. Hopefully, you find the idea of being a new ‘Early Christian’ appealing and will come along to our next Welcome Service. Since we, in St Luke’s, have always thought of ourselves as a family. Therefore, let us strive ever to remain so in new ways as well as old. With every blessing Graham

Car Pool The Car Pool is available every Sunday for your convenience. The drivers are willing to come and pick you up from your home to bring you to the service then take you home again afterwards. Please make us of this service by phoning the named driver for the appropriate Sunday. You can phone the day before or up until 10 am on the day. Please, please, if you are a car driver would you consider joining our car pool? We have so many members who require lifts to church that the drivers are having to do two runs. If you could help about once a month it would be very useful. Contact me if you can help. Marvin Harris 778089.

Just a reminder that on Saturday the 18th May we will be having the Congregational Picnic from 2 pm to 4 pm. This event will be combined with the 20th anniversary of the opening of the garden and we will be unearthing the time capsule that was buried by the Sunday School twenty years ago! The current Sunday School will be creating a new time capsule of their own to be buried – so we can look forward to opening it in 20 years! We would love it if as many of the Congregation as possible can come and help us celebrate this significant milestone. Toilet Twinning The Sunday school would like to say a massive thankyou to everyone who contributed to the toilet twinning campaign. We have now successfully raised enough money to twin all 3 of the church toilets. These will now be twinned with toilets in Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. 20 Pence Pieces I am pleased to advise that, since the beginning of this scheme, we have now collected £15,691. As always all thanks are due to those who so generously give their support. Les Mackay St Luke’s & Queen Street Church

Guild At our meeting on 4th April Gillian Molloy, a volunteer at Dundee City Archivist Department, gave us a talk on the origins of Dundee Street names. She has been a volunteer for 12 years and has undertaken a great deal of research into the subject which has now been made into a book which is now published and can be obtained from the City Archivist. Our Annual General Meeting was held on 18th April and after the business was completed we watched the musical “Joseph”. This was followed by tea, hot cross buns and cream cakes. The outing this year is on 4th May and we are going to Brechin Castle Garden Centre so we are praying for good weather. The 2019/20 Session will start on 3rd October. New members are always welcome. Aileen Adamson, President

Jewellery Ladies – why not give your jewellery box a little spring clean, - you may find some “gems” you no longer like or need. If so could I ask you to donate them to help refresh the jewellery stall which does make money for church funds. Thank you, I will put a box in the vestibule (in the hope). Babs
