St Luke’s & Queen Street Church Congregational News

October 2017

Dear friends Who cares about Phineas Fogg when the Space Station can go around the world in 100 minutes? I am, of course, talking about Jules Verne’s Victorian hero who endeavoured to orbit the globe in 80 days. Normally, the answer is no one. Except, just last month, the Scotsman Mark Beaumont went around the earth on a bicycle in 79 days – and that’s news! But to achieve this, Mark had to pedal for 16 hours to cover 240 miles every day. He says, that throughout his epic journey, he single-mindedly focussed only on each 4-hour stint in the saddle. It was just one rotation of the wheels after another. Jesus spoke repeatedly of the Kingdom. He both described it and showed us the route to it. However, somehow getting there seems so difficult. If then we are daunted at trying to bring God’s Kingdom near, let’s take a leaf out of our marathon cyclist book. We should think of only taking one step at a time. And by that, God’s arms will reach out and around this good Earth. With every blessing

Guild The Guild 2017/18 Session starts at 2.00 pm on Thursday, 5th October when John Alexander will give a talk on one of the Magellan cruises. On the 19th October Mr Robin Yule will give a talk on the work of the ambulance service. This promises to be interesting especially in light of the cut backs to the NHS. Mary Rice our treasurer will give a demonstration on decorating cup cakes on 2nd November and we have our dedication service on Sunday, 5th November. Guild Annual Gathering 2017 On Saturday, 2nd September Guilds from all over Scotland gathered in the Caird Hall for the Annual Gathering. Almost 2000 members and friends enjoyed the rousing hymns and it was truly a BIG SING. Marge Paterson, the National Convener, welcomed everyone especially one member who had come from the West Coast who was 103. The Moderator, Rt. Rev Dr Derek Browning gave his personal reflections and a thought provoking and sometimes amusing talk based on this year’s theme which is “Go in Love”. This year an attempt was made to have a live link with Fochabers and Kirkyetholm Guilds but this needs tweaking as it wasn’t very successful. The Musical Memories had the members singing songs, with actions, from their Sunday School days. After lunch we were treated to music from the Heart & Soul Swing Band and this had members and the guests and officials at the top table dancing. The Guest Speaker was Dr Pam Cairns who talked about the life of the street child, modern slavery and human trafficking. The closing worship was given by the National Vice-Convener, Patricia Robertson and the gathering closed at 3.30. Elizabeth Bates, Secretary

Any Old Wool? The Weaver Craft of Dundee is running an inter-generational project which involves senior school pupils enagaging wth residents of Residential Homes, in the use of small weaving looms which the Craft has been supplying. The result is proving beneficial to the elderly residents, sometimes acting as a therapeutic trigger for those residents who have memory challenges and are former weaving employees. In order to continue to promote and develop the project, the Craft would greatly appreciate any donations of surplus double-knitting wool of any colour. If you can assist, please let Ken Andrew know.

Good News Our Roving Reporter has asked me to give her apologies for not being able to produce all our good news for September but she has had technical/wifi problems. Isabel is hopeful that she will have September and October news in the next magazine. I think at this stage, we should all applaud Isabel for all the work she puts in to collecting and writing about all our church news. It’s a lot of work and I’m sure you’ll realise today, just how much we miss reading all her Good News. Roll on next month! If you are aware of any good news please phone Isabel on 779151 or email her at sblsctt@gmail.com or talk to her. Church Notes If you have an article you would like to share with the congregation, please send it on to me and I’ll do my best to incorporate it in the next edition of the Notes. Articles for the November edition should be with me by Sunday 29th October 2017. If you would like to receive an email version of the Church News please email me at brenda@broughtystlukes.com and I will confirm receipt to let you know that I have received your request. Sunday School Challenge On Sunday the congregation were challenged to come up with as many words as possible made from the letters in the word 'harvest'. We were all divided into groups and this is the list the Sunday school leaders came up with. In our group we decided plurals could be included and the minimum would be two letter words to give us the best possible chance to find the most words! Starve, stare, stave, share, shave, taser, heart, hearts, star, rest, vest, heat, tear, east, hast, rave, tear, tears, save, hare, hares, have, seat, hate, rash, vast, hear, vase, hat, vat, vet, sea, eat, the, are, art, has, set, ear, tar, rat, sat, at Did we miss any?
