A MESSAGE FROM
Where do we find God’s light, hope, and generosity?
ARCHBISHOP AYMOND
Reawaken, with childlike courage and wonder, to His presence. Place your faith in Him again and again, as “whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 18:4 Archbishop Gregory M. Aymond, Board Chairman
CATHOLIC COMMUNITY FOUNDATION
A LETTER FROM
CORY J. HOWAT & DR. JOSE J. BAUTISTA If 2020 taught us the importance of community, the past year has demonstrated the transformative power of allowing the joy of the Lord to fill our hearts despite difficult times. At the Catholic Community Foundation, this joy renews in us a spirit of determination. In 2021 we launched our Lifetime of Generosity Digital Legacy Seminar, a first-of-its-kind online offering. Though we cancelled our in-person annual dinner again, we broadcast a Virtual Celebration of Catholic Generosity on WLAE-TV. Our staff facilitated the move of our physical office. And we helped new donors, all in different places along their philanthropic journeys, find ways to give smarter to the parishes, schools, and nonprofits that matter to them.
In this report, you will find stories of people, just like you, whose hearts are filled with joy and whose spirits are fueled by determination. Thank you to all those whose generosity of time, talent, and treasure continues to make our community a better place.
Dr. Jose J. Bautista, Board President Cory J. Howat, Executive Director

REAFFIRM
CHERIL and CARL HOWAT Cheril and Carl Howat are St. Benilde Church parishioners of more than 50 years. Though they wondered if they had enough to give back, Cheril and Carl knew that generosity is never a matter of having too much or too little. They established the Howat Family Foundation Endowment, which will help perpetuate the values and ministries, including St. Benilde, that hold the most meaning to them. An endowment fund is a simple way for donors to affirm their faith and make a return for God’s gifts and grace in their lives.

CAROLINE and TAYLOR BUTTERWORTH Philanthropy is a way of life, and your giving journey can begin at any time. Caroline and Taylor Butterworth heard and answered the call of the Gospel by establishing a Donor Advised Fund (DAF). The Butterworths’ fund will support work important to them: families and children in need, as well as causes that provide the general public better access to nature. Donors like Caroline and Taylor use their DAFs to recommend grants at any time, with no minimum annual distributions required.

DR. KEN and BETTY TEDESCO Donors give through the Catholic Community Foundation to a wide variety of nonprofits making a big impact in our community. Dr. Ken and Betty Tedesco choose to support several human services in the area, including NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) New Orleans, an organization offering hope, help, and healing to those struggling with mental illness. COVID-19 has shone a spotlight on the importance of mental health, and gifts, like those made by the Tedescos, are helping individuals in our region build and lead lives with dignity and independence.

FR. AJANI GIBSON
ST. PETER CLAVER CHURCH
Fr. Ajani Gibson’s first assignment after ordination? His childhood parish of St. Peter Claver. In his new role as Parochial Vicar, Fr. Ajani serves a congregation that, like many others, continues to navigate pandemic-related challenges and systemic racism felt nationwide, not to mention the damage wrought by Hurricane Ida locally. Whether we are lifelong or new parishioners, our parish homes provide the community—united as one—that embodies the healing power of Christ.

RECONNECT
DR. COURTNEY MILLET ST. CHARLES CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL
Ninety percent of St. Charles Catholic High School’s students and teachers in the LaPlace area had homes affected by Hurricane Ida. Principal Dr. Courtney Millet knew that the school could provide a sense of normalcy for those impacted; just three weeks after landfall, it reopened. Support poured in from across the archdiocese and the country, as people found ways to connect with the devastated St. Charles Catholic community—from making monetary donations to providing gas cards, supplies, and hygiene kits.

DR. TOM NEAL The pandemic has changed how organizations communicate and connect with their supporters. Embracing a broader digital approach to communications, CCF collaborated with Theological Consultant Dr. Tom Neal on its Lifetime of Generosity Digital Legacy Seminar. The first-of-its-kind, the seminar leads viewers through an interactive journey of video teachings and workbook prompts as they discover what leaving a Catholic legacy means to them on a deeper, spiritual level.

SR. MARJORIE HEBERT, MSC with PATTI and RAY MASSETT Catholic Charities Archdiocese of New Orleans (CCANO) is meeting people where they are in our Greater New Orleans community and statewide. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, CCANO’s weekly food pantry has sustained many struggling families. After Hurricane Ida, CCANO President and CEO Sr. Marjorie Hebert, MSC, was on the ground handing out nonperishable goods to those hard hit. And through its Food for Seniors program, CCANO has distributed nutritional food boxes and provided health education to elders facing food insecurity for more than 35 years. The Catholic Community Foundation fosters generosity by connecting donors, like Patti and Ray Massett, to the organizations and people working to strengthen the body of Christ—our community— when we need it the most.

PANDEMICRELATED CHALLENGES FOCUS OF WOMEN’S GIVING CIRCLE Inequities in education and in society have been made undeniably evident by the pandemic, and nonprofits in the Greater New Orleans area continue to face challenges. The Women’s Giving Circle responded by focusing its 2021 giving impact on programs addressing the educational, emotional, and spiritual formation and support of children and families in need. A total of $165,000 in grants was dispersed among 10 organizations providing behavioral health services, rehousing assistance, access to after-school meals, support to children with developmental disabilities, and more. Thank you to this year’s members. You are making our community a better place.

IN THIS TOGETHER: COMMUNITY GIVES BIG ON SEVENTH ANNUAL #iGiveCatholic GIVING DAY In 2015, the Catholic Community Foundation created and launched the #iGiveCatholic Giving Day. In light of ongoing COVID and Hurricane Ida challenges, our community rallied together to give more than $2.3 million to participating organizations in the Archdiocese of New Orleans alone. Across the country, a grand total of $16.5 million for parishes, schools, and nonprofit ministries was raised to meet the needs of our sisters and brothers in Christ. #iGiveCatholic continues to make an impact in dioceses nationwide as the U.S. Catholic Church’s giving day. Thank you for generous example in answering Christ’s call to care for one another.

JOINED IN CHRIST:
LLOYD AND JAN TATE WIN 2021 ST. JOHN PAUL II AWARD Lloyd and Jan Tate have dedicated their lives to the Catholic Church, to one another, to the vocation of marriage, and—above all else—to God. Prolific volunteers, the Tates have shared their gifts with organizations like Catholic Charities, Boys Hope Girls Hope, and Notre Dame Seminary, among others. Lloyd and Jan are certified spiritual directors trained by the Archdiocesan Spirituality Center, where they currently serve as associate directors. The couple also has dedicated more than four decades to providing marriage preparation courses to hundreds of couples in our community. As they prepare to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary, winning the St. John Paul II Award as a couple means the most to the Tates.
“We’ve long felt that the greatest gift we have to give is the gift of our marriage,” says Jan. The St. John Paul II Award recognizes the generosity and Christian stewardship exhibited by Catholic laypeople of high moral character and exemplary values who have rendered unselfish volunteer service to the institutions and programs of the Archdiocese of New Orleans. The award was presented during CCF’s 2021 Virtual Celebration of Catholic Generosity broadcast on WLAE-TV.
