Briquetting in General Turn Your Waste Into Value

Background C.F. Nielsen is a leading manufacturer with more than 65 years of experience in briquetting. We have supplied stationary or mobile briquetting plants all over the world. An investment in a CFN briquetting press is very profitable and it will often be paid off within only 1 – 3 years. Our high-tech production machinery is efficient and state-of-the-art. By producing all the components ourselves we are able to secure an unparalleled quality to the benefit of our customers. Features & Benefits A Briquetting System allows you to compress your waste sawdust, chips, shavings or other biomass into briquettes that are very environmental friendly high-grade bio fuels. Wood waste briquettes are used for heating in the public or private sector. The volume of the wood briquette is normally reduced to less than one tenth of the volume of the raw material and thus making transport a lot easier and far less expensive. Generally two kg of wood briquettes holds the same energy as one litre of fuel oil. Briquetting is a process in which the material is compressed under high pressure, which causes the content of lignin in the wood to be liberated and thereby it binds the material to a firm briquette. Humidity influence on quality of the briquettes The most appropriate water content in raw material for

briquetting varies and depends on the raw material. However we recommend water content of min. 6% up to max 16%. If the water content is beyond 16% even for smaller part of the raw material it will reduce the quality of the briquettes and eventually make the process impossible. Hydraulic Presses Major part of the hydraulic presses on the market are designed to be used where demand to capacity is from 50 to 150 kg/h and this makes these machines attractive for minor installations that are to be used only for 6-8 hours per day.

The raw material is fed into the machine by a time controlled dosing screw, which means that it is the volume of the raw material, which is controlled and not the weight. Mechanical Presses Mechanical presses are available with capacities from approx. 200 kg/h up to 1800 kg/h. Those presses are typically installed at professional users, as the key machines in large briquetting plants that generally are operating automatically for 2 or 3 shifts a day.

However a few semi-professional hydraulic briquette presses with a capacity of until app. 400 kg/h are today available on the market. CFN hydraulic briquette presses are built as turnkey solutions complete with dosing silo, hydraulic power station and control panel. Generally the lifetime of a hydraulic press will be considerably shorter than the lifetime of a mechanical briquetting press. The outcome is fairly good uniform length and looks of the briquettes that are mainly used on the private market.

Briquettes from such plants are normally produced in round and short shapes to be used at heating plants for large industries or district heating units. It is however possible to convert a mechanical press to mass-produce square briquettes for the consumer market. The briquettes can be cut to the preferred standard length by installing an automatic briquette saw or cutter. Construction of the Mechanical Press A mechanical press is built like an eccentric press. A constantly rotating eccentric connected to a press piston presses the raw material through a conic nozzle. On a mechanical press the required counter

pressure will only be adjusted by mounting a nozzle with a different conicity. We have developed a large variety of nozzles for various types of wood and other biomass in order to cope with customer requirements to the quality and shape of the briquettes.

The lifetime of a mechanical press is considerably longer than the lifetime of the smaller hydraulic presses. Feeding and Operation A mechanical press receives raw material by a speed controlled dosing screw. In reality the speed of the dosing screw determines the outcome of the machine. The regulation has to be based on the specific gravity of the raw material. A modification of the specific gravity of the raw material will, therefore, change the weight of the added quantity, which again results in a variation of the hardness of the briquette.

Briquetting Plant A mechanical briquetting press will continuously produce a briquettes string, which, however, breaks in random lengths dependent on the binding capability of the raw material.

the press is very hot because of the friction in the nozzle. The longer time the briquette can remain under pressure in the cooling line the longer and harder it will be. Cooling lines of 35 to 50 metres in length are very common.

For shortening of the briquette string a briquetting saw or cutter can be delivered. The saw works in cycle with the advancing briquetting string and the result is a very small length variation of the briquettes.

Briquettes for industrial use (for instance district heating stations) must not be too long or too hard, as they may cause damage to the dosing system of the plant. Briquettes for the private sector are normally preferred to be hard and rather long (15-30 cm) as they are often packed in small plastic bags for easy distribution and handling.

Cooling lines and quality of briquettes On the mechanical press the quality of the briquettes depends highly on the cooling and transport lines mounted on the machine. Our presses are as standard delivered with 15 m cooling/transport lines, which we recommend as an absolute minimum for wood briquettes.

To improve the quality of the briquettes for the private sector it may be necessary to accept some reduction of the capacity of the machine.

The briquette being pushed out of

Next step We look forward to receive your specific inquiry in order to enable us based on our know-how and extensive expertise in briquetting to prepare a detailed quotation for a complete briquetting plant tailored to meet your specific requirements.

Change from one type of wood to another or changing for instance the content of dust versus chips will therefore result in a changed look and hardness of the briquette. Therefore we often recommend our presses to be equipped with an automatic capacity adjustment system that will adjust the capacity up and down depending of the raw material.

From Wood Waste to Biomass Briquettes Wood waste from window factory used as fuel at local district heating plant Using Biomass Fuel

Industrial Briquettes from Wood Waste A leading Danish window factory has an annual production of 2,000 tonnes of industrial biomass briquettes based on sawdust, shavings and chips mainly pine. The raw material is stored in a large silo with automatic discharge system and a frequency controlled dosing screw that feeds the BP3200 briquetting press placed in a small shed next to the silo. The briquettes are via cooling lines with 3-way switch track pushed into containers placed under a covered shelter. Each container holds app. 10 tonnes of briquettes that are delivered to a local district heating plant. Heating Plant converted to Biomass Dybvad Heating Plant has a 2.5 MW grip-boiler that originally was designed to burn wet woodchips. After converting to use dry woodwaste briquettes with a moisture content of 10-12%, they have fully avoided the previous corrosion problems with the

boiler and besides the ash content have been reduced to only 0.35%. Easy Transport and handling Briquettes are cheaper to transport than sawdust and shavings because of a high bulk density of 550 – 600 kg/m3, which is 5-6 times less than the raw material. An automatic crane fills the briquettes into a hopper, from where they are then feed into the boiler via a screw conveyor. 340 homes are connected to the heating plant via a highly insulated network of underground tubes. Features and Benefits • High bulk density of 550-625 kg/m3 • Reduced transport cost and easy handling • Automatic feeding into the boiler via a screw conveyor • No corrosion problems in boiler because of low moisture Please contact us for further details

ies for such a product from several customers. Here are some of the applications we see so far for the new product: • Many smaller boilers and gasifiers need a product smaller than an industrial briquettes or fuel pucks, and would benefit from a product bigger than a pellet – Bio Fuel Quarters are ideal. • Some power companies complain that briquettes are more difficult to handle in their feeding systems than pellets. The Bio Fuel Quarters can be handled in most feeding systems that can handle pellets. • Bio Fuel Quarters – especially in hard wood – will be an attractive consumer product for barbecue, as a clean alternative to charcoal and coal briquettes. • Bio Fuel Quarters are excellent as fire starters.

Case: Demolition Wood Shredding and briquetting old pallets

1 Raw Material

This case shows a typical system for shredding and briquetting old pallets and other types of waste wood.

2 Shredding

The raw material is being fed into the shredder.

Old pallets stored in a tent to keep it dry in winter. The coloured pallets, a few are showing in this picture, will be sorted out.

3 Shredding

The raw material is being shredded and sorted.

4 Sorting

Shredded raw material is passing one of several magnet separators for sorting out nails. An adjustable gap between the transport belt and the vacuum inlet for the hammer mill secures that nails that have not been sorted out by the magnet separator will fall down and not be sucked into the hammer mill.

5 Hammer Mill

The raw material passes the hammer mill before going into the large storage silo.

6 Storage

A 400 m3 storage silo is containing shredded and milled raw material. In the bottom of the silo there is room for two briquetting presses, type BP5500, producing a total of approx. 2.5 tons of briquettes per hour. The presses can run unmanned around the clock with a silo this size.

7 Briquetting

A look at the two BP 5500 briquetting presses placed in bottom of the storage silo.

8 Briquettes

The briquettes are placed in a pile coming directly from the briquetting presses via the cooling lines.

Increased Demand for Straw Briquettes From straw to valuable biomass briquettes for power plants and heating plants etc.

Straw Briquetting This case is focussing on briquetting of dry wheat and rape straw to be used as industrial biomass fuel. Straw briquettes has a bulk weight of 500–600 kg/m3 and a heat value of app 17 MJ/kg. Corn, miscanthus and other agricultural crops may also be used. After harvesting the straw is pressed into bales. It is very important that the bales are stored under shelter for protection against rain to maintain the moisture content in the range 10-15%. This ensures a good quality of briquettes that can be stored for several months without disengaging. Straw Preparation and Briquetting In order to make the straw ready for briquetting it has to be mixed and shredded to particles of 100-200 mm in length before entering a straw mill that reduces the particles down to a particle length of 10–20 mm. In some cases 1-3% of chalk is added to improve the strength of the briquettes as well a assisting in keeping the boiler clean. For consumer briquttes it may be necessary to add lignin as well.

A stone trap and a dust extraction device is important to reduce the wear on the hammermill and the briquetting press etc. Our BP5500HD and larger presses are very suitable for making straw briquettes due to their double feeding system, increased inlet chamber and special die system for straw briquetting etc. Advantages of Straw Briquettes • Straw is fast growing and available in large amounts • Normally no need for drying • Straw briquettes are CO2 neutral • High bulk density of 500-600 kg/m3 means reduced transportation costs compared to baled straw Contact us for further details

Newsletter 2010 C.F. Nielsen

Special Points of Interest • Market Situation • Market development • Energy match making • New markets – new applications • Exhibitions • New products Market Situation The financial crisis that started in 2008 continued into 2009, and only in 2010 some improvement is expected. The traditional customer for briquetting equipment comes from the wood working industry and this industry has been seriously affected by the crisis. Investments have been reduced to a minimum and the financial sector has been very reluctant to finance new projects. To help our customers financing their investments we have on certain projects in 2009 obtained the help from EKF (The Danish Export Credit Insurance). EKF will evaluate all projects and perform a credit assessment of the final endcustomer, so only projects with a good future will be accepted. We will continue to use this system in the future.

C.F. Nielsen A/S - Solbjergvej 19 - DK-9574 Baelum - Tel.: +45 98 33 74 00 - Fax: +45 98 33 72 26 - sales@cfnielsen.com - www.cfnielsen.com

Due to the general downturn in business it has also been necessary for us to adapt our company and organisation to the new situation. We expect an improving world market situation in 2010. The winter 2009/10 has been cold many places, which will have a positive effect on sales. Market Development

In December 2009 the UN Climate Change Conference - COP15 - was held in Copenhagen. Most participants came to Denmark with high expectations, which was not totally fulfilled, as the decisions in final agreement was somewhat reduced. Still the agreement was a start for the whole world to start focusing on an improved climate. On a regional level – with Europe in front – governments continued to implement measures to reduce CO2 emissions, and continued to implement support schemes to motivate private and public companies to invest in renewable energy projects. In the near future power companies will be needing millions of ton of biomass, and the search has started to find this biomass. The nature of the biomass will besides wood waste to an increasing extend include agricultural waste and specific energy crops such as mischanthus and willow. We expect to make briquettes an attractive alternative.

We participated in the Bright Green exhibition in connection the COP15 in Copenhagen. We met representatives from all over the world, who were interested in briquetting equipment. Energy Matchmaking During 2009 we continued to strengthen the activity of matching potential customers with biomass raw material with energy companies. As a result of this we managed to match a Scandinavian energy company with a US company and the first shipment of briquettes will be made early in 2010 to Scandinavia. More projects are seriously being evaluated by potential partners, and we expect more of them to materialize during 2010. There is a growing interest in briquettes, as they can be purchased at a lower price than pellets. To support our marketing efforts of briquettes we have made a study comparing pellets with briquettes as industrial fuel together Force Institute – a Danish technological institute with know how in biomass and boilers. The conclusions of the study are: • Production of briquettes is more flexible when it comes to raw material i.e. moisture content and particle size and this is giving lower power consumption per ton briquette produced. • The production of briquettes is a less complicated process and the demand for manning is less than for production of pellets. • A wide range of type and mix of raw materials can be used for briquetting i.e. everything from wood to agriculture waste to plastic.

C.F. Nielsen A/S - Solbjergvej 19 - DK-9574 Baelum - Tel.: +45 98 33 74 00 - Fax: +45 98 33 72 26 - sales@cfnielsen.com - www.cfnielsen.com

• The production of briquettes can be located at the source of raw material giving lower logistic cost. • High flexibility for lay-out of briquetting equipment which make it easy to ad on to existing production facilities of the wood processing industry and at farms. The overall conclusion is that the investment cost and operational cost is less for production of briquettes compared to production of pellet – specially for production scale from 5000 ton to 50000 ton which is the traditional area for briquette production. New Markets – New Applications

Due to the financial crisis many of the traditional markets showed a down turn in business. In this situation it was good to obtain one of the company’s largest contracts to a customer in Germany. Other markets with positive development were Sweden, France, Italy, U.K, Canada and USA. During 2009 we saw some new applications, which we expect to be strengthened during 2010. The applications are the following: • Agricultural biomass – We sold new plants for straw, and have an increasing demand for small and large plants for mischanthus, switch grass, corn waste, sugar cane waste and others.

• Small power plants – based on gasification technology or similar, where raw materials range from biomass to different types of waste including RDF. • Torrefied wood – We are receiving many inquiries from mainly from North America from customers wanting to densify this new energy product. We have decided to get help from the Danish Technological Institute in developing a method to densify this product. Torrefied should be the new fuel as it is hydrophobic and has a higher calorific value than other types of biomass. Exhibitions During 2009, we participated in local exhibitions in Denmark, France, Poland, Portugal, U.K., USA. And Canada. The main event for the year was our participation in the Ligna exhibition in Hannover, Germany from May 18-22. In spite of the financial crisis we received many visitors and as usual had the opportunity to meet customers and other business associates from all over the world. The exhibition was very successful. During 2010 you can again meet us at several local and international exhibitions all over the world including exhibitions in Sweden, France, Russia, U.K. USA, Canada and South Africa.

New Products and Product Updates The new EU directive for machinery – the CE directive – has become effective as from the beginning of 2010. In many ways the directive has been changed and strengthened. We have adapted our machinery to the new directive. Other important developments are as follows:

• New units – We successfully finished development and sold several of the new BPU2500 and 3200 units. The units are complete with base frame, dosing silo, cables and flexible control panel with touch screen control/operation. Besides from being easy to install the units are easy to move from place to place. The units have great functionality including the following features: - Super wide range Frequency inverter ensures steady operation even with greater variation in raw material - Semi automatic operation - Fully automatic capacity regulation - Alarm log and service function - Factory tested with the customer’s raw material makes installation very easy and fast. We called it Plug and Press!

• New adjustable die – On our smaller models, such as the new units, we have chosen to offer a new adjustable die. Many customers want to briquette different types of raw material on the same machine, which – with some limitations – will be possible with the new adjustable die. • Cabling – In the future customers will get the choice of having machines cabled before delivery, making local installation and start up easier and faster. • Agricultural applications – We have developed new equipment and wear parts increasing the output and lifetime considerably. The developments include: - Enlarged inlet chamber for compression chamber with level censors - Special compression screws - Larger motors the compression screws - Special die system with longer life time, and - Stainless steel plates and ventilation to prevent machinery for corroding. Best regards, C.F. Nielsen A/S Mogens Slot Knudsen
