AMRS Round 1 Welcome from Series Management Welcome to the opening round of the 2022 Australian Motor Racing Series at Sydney Motorsport Park. Like all other national motorsport series, the last two seasons have been difficult for the AMRS due to travel restrictions, lockdowns and border closures brought about due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, despite the ongoing postponements and cancellations of our events, the support from our categories and competitor groups has never wavered, and I must say a big thank you to everyone for their ongoing support of our series. Fingers crossed we can get through the 2022 season without any disruptions to our schedule. This weekend is shaping up to be an exciting one. After the success of last year's inaugural Super GT 4 Hour under lights, the marathon endurance race makes a return to field with a high-quality array of drivers (including a Bathurst winner) on the entry list. An exciting addition to this year's AMRS line-up is the Kumho V8 Classic Racing Series, which features an assortment of iconic V8 Supercars from the 1990s and 2000s, while the ever-popular TA2 Muscle Car Series, Thunder Sports National Series, Australian Formula 3 Championship and Stock Cars all return to the track. After a couple of false starts last year, this AMRS round will be the first to be live-streamed by our new broadcast partner, Fuzzy Media. The broadcast will be anchored by experienced sports broadcaster Tony Schibeci, while reality TV star Lachlan Mansell will provide expert analysis in the commentary box and another familiar face, Kylie King, will provide updates and colour stories in the pits and paddock. We hope you enjoy all the action from the opening round of the AMRS, and look forward to seeing you trackside throughout the season.

AMRS Round 1 Preview Your essential form guide for each category It's the start of a new AMRS season, and as Lachlan Mansell discovers, each category has a wealth of intriguing storylines to follow.
The 2022 season of the Australian Motor Racing Series (AMRS) is set to kick off with a thrilling spectacle at Sydney Motorsport Park on February 18 and 19, including the return of the Super GT 4 Hour under lights. AMRS features a selection of national categories, of which six will be in attendance at the SMP round. Despite COVID-19 interrupting the previous two AMRS seasons, interest has remained at a premium with all categories boasting strong entry numbers for the season opener. Super GT Australia will serve as a highlight, with practice, a pair of qualifying sessions and a Top 10 Shootout all leading up to the main event. Last year’s inaugural enduro was won by Luke Youlden and Vince Muriti in a Mercedes AMG GT3, in a dramatic contest that culminated in a lead change on the very last lap. Youlden and Muriti are back to defend their crown, while other notable names on the entry list include the father-and-son duo of Indiran and Duvashen Padayachee in their Porsche, the Mercedes AMG-GT3 of Garth Walden/Michael Sheargold and the Richard Gartner/Hadrian Morrall Lamborghini Gallardo. The race meeting will also host the debut of the new Kumho V8 Classic Racing Series, which will feature an assortment of machinery including the ex-Craig Lowndes Triple 8 Holden VE Commodore that finished third in the 2012 Bathurst 1000 and is
now owned by Jim Pollicina. Other notable Supercars on the entry list include Michael Anderson's ex-Tickford Racing FG Falcon and Jason Foley's Dick Johnson Racing BF. The Australian Formula 3 Championship will break new ground in its 23-year history with the category’s first ever night race. With F3 cars currently holding the outright lap record on the full Gardner Circuit at SMP, expectations are high of seeing yet more record breaking pace in the cooler night time conditions. A notable vehicle on this year’s F3 grid will be the Dallara F312/16 of Trent Grubel – it is the newest car in this year’s field, and will be run by Tim Macrow Racing, which will also oversee the entries of young gun Ben Taylor and the experienced Ross McAlpine. The Gilmour Racing squad has signed last year’s Australian Formula Ford Championship runner-up Noah Sands as its main title protagonist, while Ryan Astley will line up for another season with 99 motorsport. A crowd favourite, the TA2 Muscle Car series will once more hold a hotly contested affair in their 425 horsepower, low downforce cars that have taken the Australian motorsport scene by storm. Early entry numbers for the category are extremely positive and is filled with a mixture of rising stars and experienced hands. Thunder Sports, a national category geared to the grass roots competitors, has also secured a night race at the event with an incredible and diverse range of cars. The series is split into Classes A and B, depending on lap times achieved by the different vehicles; both classes offer their own winners, podiums and prizes. Thunder Sports cars are typically loud and exciting to watch, with either large capacity V8 or highly-tuned turbocharged motors. In previous seasons, Albury-Wodonga racers Cory Gillett and Mark Tracey have been the main title contenders but in more recent times, it has been OzTrucks that have ruled the roost, with drivers like Stephen Chilby coming to the fore. The OzTrucks are also eligible to compete in the Stock Cars Australia category, which loudly and proudly showcases cars derived from American NASCAR machines. The field consists of all manner of American stock car machinery, while the drivers include former Legend Cars Australia Champion James Burge. AMRS Series Manager Matt Baragwanath is enthused about the commencement of this year’s series. “We’re excited to kick off our 2022 season at Sydney Motorsport Park, and very pleased to have the continued support of our national categories despite the COVID interruptions of the last two seasons,” Baragwanath said. “The fans will be treated to plenty of entertaining racing, especially the Super GT 4 Hour, which will be a thrilling night-time spectacle.”
