Our Community Foundation A

s leaders, grant makers, and stewards of philanthropy, the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore serves the common good of the Lower Eastern Shore. We are a 501(c)3 nonprofit with an inspiring history of fostering charitable endeavors, and have provided more than $60 million in grants and scholarships to the local community since 1984. We collaborate with individuals, families, and businesses to match their charitable interests with community needs and strengthen local nonprofits through grants and resources. We are devoted to improving our regional community and believe in people helping one another to provide positive impact.

collective GivinG As partners, we can make a bigger community impact when we pool our charitable gifts. At CFES we build philanthropy together.

stewArdship We carefully steward gifts to the community through sound investment and effective grantmaking to strengthen area nonprofits. We have been trusted leaders in philanthropy since 1984.

The Community Foundation’s Annual Report allows us to look back on our accomplishments as we continue connecting people who care with causes that matter. Throughout the year, our donors give generously, sharing their time, talent, and finances to create a brighter tomorrow for the Lower Shore. Together we pool our resources, share our knowledge, and expand our relationships. We know philanthropy is not about the size of the gift, but rather the people who give of themselves to improve the community we share. By working for today, planning for tomorrow, and providing an opportunity for everyone’s inner philanthropist to shine, we are planting seeds for a more promising future. Our commonly shared value of charitable giving is what makes the Community Foundation unique, and allows us to create solutions for the common good of our region. On behalf of the Community Foundation, thank you for caring. You are creating a stronger, more vibrant community.

Annual Grant Making

Giving Tuesday

The 2016 fiscal year marked a record number of charitable grants made by the Foundation, with $5.4 million creating 1,526 grants. The profound and lasting impact of these grants will improve the quality of life for all citizens in the Lower Shore region.

Hosted annually the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, Giving Tuesday is an online giving event where charities, families, businesses, community centers, and students around the world come together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give.

Our grants expand horizons, develop positive change, and create legacies that live beyond a lifetime. With a network of 400+ local nonprofits, our annual grant making possibilities are endless.

Through the Community Foundation’s campaign, nonprofits are provided the opportunity to inspire the community to support their missions and gain exposure with donors. CFES provides nonprofits the donation platform, expertise, and resources needed to have a successful online charitable campaign during the holiday season.

Our mission, while simple, would not be possible without the generosity, passion, and kindness of our donors. Thanks to you, we have been able to steadily grow our impact year after year. We are excited for 2017. With your ongoing support, we will continue to set our sights higher, dream larger, and work harder, as we continue growing our grant making with worthy causes that matter to you.

December 1, 2015 marked the Community Foundation’s first annual Giving Tuesday campaign dubbed “The Shore Gives More.” In our first year the event debuted for Worcester County nonprofits, with expansion plans for 2016. With 26 nonprofits participating, Giving Tuesday attracted 75 new donors for these organizations. 7

In Honor

Those moments in life we celebrate – retirements, birthdays, anniversaries – become all the more meaningful when they’re remembered with a gift that gives back to the community. When a card’s not enough and one more delivery of flowers is too much, a gift to the Foundation made in honor of a special occasion or person is always fitting. The names of those who have been honored are shown in bold after the fund name, followed by the names of the donors to the fund.

The Legacy Society In our lifetimes we each make our own mark on our communities. Beyond our lifetimes, a gift to the Community Foundation can extend that legacy of compassion. The Legacy Society provides a way for CFES to recognize and thank donors who plan and declare a deferred gift during their lifetimes, and to work with donors to plan how their gifts will benefit future generations.

Field of Interest & Community Needs Funds In FY2016, the Foundation made more than 225 grants totaling nearly $400,000 to nonprofits thanks to our Field of Interest and Community Needs Funds. Field of Interest Funds are established to benefit a certain area of interest, such as the arts, youth services, or the environment. Community Needs Funds are established to benefit the most immediate needs, which may change over time. The Metropolitan Magazine Fund

Carol and Doug Naarup of The Metropolitan Magazine established a Community Needs fund with CFES. The gift was initiated, in part, from charitable proceeds raised at the Metropolitan’s 2015 “Best Of Party’ held on October 9th at the magazine’s Salisbury offices. This new fund will help provide annual support to nonprofit programs throughout the lower Eastern Shore. Pictured: Erica Joseph and Doug Naarup.

Smith Island United Smith Island United works to grow island tourism and workforce development. Founded by area residents, the organization is devoted to the preservation, culture, and natural beauty of the 400 year old island community. CFES grants have aided in these efforts.

YEA! Salisbury CFES grants were instrumental in launching the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce’s Young Entrepreneurs Academy. The funding provided program materials for 24 students who, with help from 80+ volunteers, created 14 businesses in our local community upon graduation. 17

The Legacy Tree Melody Nelson and Erica Joseph, President CFES, at the Legacy Tree unveiling event.

The Legacy Tree, honoring members of the Legacy Society, was unveiled May 26th during a reception at the CFES office. Members of the Legacy Society have declared in writing their intent to make a deferred gift to the Foundation by will, trust, life insurance, or other financial instrument.

Board members and Legacy Society members Mike Truitt and Jim Thomas address the crowd.

The sculpture, a multi-colored metal-leafed tree, is mounted on the wall in the reception area. Legacy Society members’ names are engraved on individual leaves of the tree. The Foundation has more than 120 Legacy Society members, and although some members prefer to remain anonymous, many agree to publicly declare their intentions as a way to lead by example.

“Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces, I would still plant my apple tree.” 18

In Memory Of

Sue Morris

Sue Morris was a true friend to the Community Foundation. In three decades as a director and volunteer, she made her own mark on the Foundation’s history and future with her extraordinary dedication. Her legacy continues today. Though a quiet philanthropist, Sue was incredibly generous. She gave freely of her time as well as her talents and resources. She was a ready volunteer on many Foundation committees and regularly volunteered for the less glamorous chores required at a fledgling nonprofit. In the early days, when directors were pressed to help with mailings, Sue would show up to fold, stuff and stamp. She did so with the same enthusiasm and energy she gave to her leadership roles. Sue established funds to support her favorite causes – family, faith, and community – and was a founding member of The Legacy Society. Her leadership by example was, and remains, an inspiration to many. The Foundation joins Sue’s family and friends in remembering the life of this true humanitarian and her commitment to enriching the lives of others. 23

Partners with Passion The Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation established a Nonprofit Partner Fund with CFES in 2016. The $80,000 investment will create an endowment to provide for future civic endeavors, as well as provide an immediate source of support for the SACCF. At the Ilia Fehrer Nature Preserve outside of Berlin, Maryland, Stephen Decatur students plant trees through the 10 Days to the Bay program created by Maryland Coastal Bays Program. The preservation effort aims to restore natural habitats and eventually open to the public as a nature park. The Assateague Coastal Trust (ACT) Coast Kids Summer Enrichment Program teaches kids topics such as ecology, colonial history, edible wild plants, and nature art projects. The 2016 camp included a visit to Furnace Town for campers to learn about archeology. CFES grants provided scholarships. At the Art League of Ocean City, CFES board member Carolyn Johnston and CFES staff Heather Trader, BJ Summers, and Victoria Kent created bowls for the Empty Bowl Project. The project benefited both Diakonia and the Art League through a dinner where the bowls were then purchased. 27

FundinG our Future

The Hunter Hudson Memorial Scholarship was established to benefit graduates of Stephen Decatur High School. 19 year old Hunter, who loved the outdoors, passed away suddenly on March 24th. The family hopes this legacy will keep Hunter’s memory alive in the minds of those who knew and loved him, while assisting future generations.

Rebecca Maczis, recipient of the Beattie Healthcare Careers Scholarship, received her physical therapy degree from University of Maryland. The scholarship not only provided financial support, but motivation to continue towards achieving her career goals. She now works as a full-time acute care Physical Therapist at Johns Hopkins.

Hannah Insley, recipient of The Louise Smith Scholarship, attended Mardela Middle & High School and was accepted into Salisbury University’s pre-nursing program. Recipients must be Wicomico County residents who attended public high school and are active members of a Methodist church.

Miracle Mapp, recipient of the Hazel Minority Scholarship, works with students at Horizons Salisbury, while continuing her studies in Education at Salisbury University. She and her brother, Magic Mapp (also a Hazel Scholarship recipient) share a commitment to the community by becoming local educators. 31
