Record Number of Deacons Ordained Saturday, September 12, 2015 It’s Not a Hobby; It’s Not a Job; It’s a Calling

T

he Sacred Order of Deacons, with Bishop Brewer residing, ordained 11 deacons on Sept. 12. This is a new record for this diocese.

The diocese new deacons are Robert (Bob) and Carolyn Quinnell, St. Mary’s in Belleview; Nancy Bryson, St. George Episcopal Church in The Villages; Patrice Behnstedt, Holy Trinity in Bartow; Chester Trow, Grace Episcopal Church in Ocala; Rey Percia, St. David’s in Lakeland; Nancy Oliver, the Cathedral Church of St. Luke in Orlando; Julie Altenbach, Church of the Messiah in Winter Garden; Bob Dinnerville, Christ the King in Lakeland; Doug Jump, St. Stephen’s in Lakeland and Meg Davis.

Please congratulate each one when you see them.

One deacon wrote of the class of 2015: We were eleven individuals who entered the diaconate program at various times, but grew together as classmates and friends to become the largest deacon class in the history of this diocese. How did this happen? One contributing factor of our size was the change in the education requirements for ICS. Several of us had completed enough of our requirements to be able to join the classmates who were entering the final year of course requirements. Others had been in the program for several years and, for one reason or another, were delayed in finishing until this year. By whatever means we arrived, we each, in our own way, became one of the “heavenly eleven” as we were so nicknamed toward the end of our class studies.

So what are my personal impressions? This has been an awesome journey and I have been blessed to be able to walk alongside 10 other wonderful people through this process.

What a unique gift it has been to get to know and learn from each and every one of them. (A special blessing to me was being able to have my husband at my side the entire way.) Yes, there were eleven of us, which seems like a big number, but each and every one of us brought something unique to the group in a way that allowed us to learn from each other’s experiences and grow strong together.

We live in an increasingly dangerous world. The statics for child abuse are staggering. In 2011, the National Sexual Violence Resource Center reported that about one in three girls and one in seven boys will be sexually abused during childhood. ​What’s worse is that most victims of child sexual abuse know their attacker; 34 percent of assailants were family members, 58 percent were acquaintances, and only 7 percent of the perpetrators were strangers to the victim.

The Rev. Canon Dr. Justin and Lindsey Holcomb are parents of two young children and decided they needed to provide parents with a resource to help them teach their children how to keep safe. Together they wrote God Made All of Me, a simply told, beautifully illustrated story to help families talk about the private parts of their bodies and appropriate and inappropriate types of touch. The book is geared toward children ages 2 to 8.

When asked about how they approached this subject with their kids, Justin and Lindsey responded: “We started by teaching them the proper names of their private parts at an early age and telling them that their bodies are strong, beautiful and made by God. We read books to them on this topic and would talk about who can help them in the bathroom or bath and that it was OK for the doctor to check their private parts at appointments when mom or dad is present.

“We would also role play different scenarios to get them thinking what they would do if someone approached them and wanted to touch their

private parts, show theirs, take pictures, and so on. We’d play the ‘what if’ game with them at the dinner table with different scenarios to see their thinking and problem-solving skills: ‘If someone asked you to show them your private parts and promised to give you candy if you didn’t tell anyone, what would you do?’ Remind them that they can tell you anything at any time without fear of getting into trouble.

“We’ve also tried to instill a sense of control over their bodies. We would tell them to say ‘no’ or ‘stop’ when they were all done being hugged, tickled or wrestled. We encouraged them to practice this with us so they would feel confident saying it to others, if the need arose. We would tell them they don’t have to hug or kiss a family member if they don’t want to, and teach them how to express this without being rude. It is important to empower children to be in charge of their bodies instead of at the mercy of adults.”

God Made All of Me starts from the fundamental truth that God created everything and applies that truth to kids and their bodies. It equips parents to talk with both boys and girls about their bodies and to help them understand the difference between the appropriate and inappropriate touch of others. God Made All of Me allows families to build a first line of defense against sexual abuse in the safety of their own homes.

Sowing the Word

A

as we move into this busy time of sowing and reaping, I thought it might be helpful to think about our work in the light of one of Jesus’ most important parables: the Parable of the Sower.

The Parable of the Sower – The Work and Nature of God (Mark 4:1-20) Jesus is explicit with his disciples that this Parable of the Sower is foundational. Without understanding the Parable of the Sower, how will they comprehend anything else? It holds a preeminent place because it describes the work and nature of God. God is the one who graciously and lavishly sows the Word. God is the Master Sower. God is the one who scatters the Word out into all different kinds of soils. It astonishes our understanding of agriculture from the manner in which the seeds are tossed in the hopes of some crop abounding. No farmer today, and no farmer 2,000 years ago, would think that to be an effective strategy.

Nevertheless, that is God’s nature. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16, KJV). God gave his only Son, to the exclusion of no one, so that everyone who believes may have eternal life. God is, as Jesus says, the sower who is sowing the Word. Notice the “is”; this verse is in the present tense. God is always in the business of sowing the Word lavishly and generously throughout all of creation.

The Parable of the Sower – Jesus’ Ministry and Our Own Additionally, the parable is a way Jesus describes his own ministry. This is exactly what

he does. He is available at every opportunity to serve or to give or to sow, regardless of the people, times or places involved. Moreover, the parable describes the ministry of those who are also sowers of the Word. That is the call of each and every one of us. The call to each and every one of us is to give and to sow the Word as lavishly and as generously as he did. To quote Paul: “Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season” (2 Timothy 4:2, ESV). In other words, whether we feel like it or not, regardless of the circumstances we find ourselves in, we are willing to say yes for God to use us to sow the Word wherever we are.

Literally everywhere and anywhere is where God calls us to be available at any time.

As available sowers, we will face similar responses as the Master Sower. We will face those who will directly oppose, those who are indifferent, those whose commitment does not last, and those who miraculously are the 30-, 60- or 100-fold in return. The danger is to think that if we do not reap 100-fold, we must

be doing something wrong. It is not always that simple. There will always be a breadth of places where God is using us where we may find a large return or where we may try very hard and not get very much back.

Not Easy Work This is not easy work. Some of us are called to minister in very dry places where the fruit is minimal to nonexistent. If we are in one of those places, we can find jealousy creeping in as we hear of others’ successes. We begin to long for better soil. We can quickly move from self-examination (“Am I doing this well?”) to self-doubt (“Am I the right person for this responsibility?”). We can even wonder whether or not we heard God rightly in our saying yes to our present place of service.

If you are in that place of self-doubt, it is time to talk with other farmers. See what they are doing. Learn from them. Examine what you are doing in the light of their examples. To

CANTERBURY be one who sows requires a commitment to lifelong learning. Go to those who are bearing fruit in exactly those places that are hardest for you. Look at their fruit. Learn not only their technique, but also from their lives. Be willing to change and adapt.

But, most importantly, spend extra time

talking with the One who is always sowing seeds in our hearts. All sowing is an extension of God’s work. Perhaps this is the time to get away and just spend time alone with God. All of us, from time to time, need the renewed refreshment of the intimacy of God’s presence.

Be alone with God, and open your heart to

God’s loving correction and direction.

Let the Master Sower sow within you the wisdom and the tenacity you need.

PS In order to be the sowers the Lord calls us to be, we must make time and space to rest, to read, to listen and to simply be with Jesus ourselves.

Such restorative Sabbath time refreshes and restores, allows us to heal and recharges us to sow yet more.

As a diocese, we intentionally create these spaces and times at Canterbury and Camp Wingmann. I am thankful for the growth and development of the ministries and programs at Canterbury being shared in this special section. We will have a similar focus again next spring for the camp.

Yet each of these is underused and in need of your support.

Such visits are most welcome and free even though the costs of running their extensive facilities are very real. Please consider the ways you, as an individual, and your parish support them through prayer, participation and finances. And be alert to the ways God wants to use you to sow his Word.

What a Difference a Year Makes

Canterbury Retreat and Conference Center - a sacred space close to everything.

D

ear Friends, In mid-November I will celebrate my sixth anniversary of being the Executive Director at Canterbury.

Writing that sentence amazes me, as it seems so recently that I came into this vocation. As with a lot of churches, ministries and businesses, the economic downturn was difficult, and it required a rethinking of the entire operation of Canterbury. What worked, prospered and succeeded before would not work within the realm of a broken economy. It took a couple years for Canterbury to learn a new cadence in a new season; and now we walk in a different rhythm. We are seeing the ministry and mission of Canterbury expand and grow.

In the midst of the transition, I had the opportunity to gather with a group of gifted ministry leaders.

One man in particular, Dr. John Perkins, a civil rights leader, offered me this insight regarding ministry: Start where you are, With what you have, Do what you can. Something so simple, yet so profound.

Jesus modeled this with loaves and fish and wine at the wedding at Cana. We see this throughout the scripture in stories such as: Elisha and the widow, Noah and the ark, Gideon and his army and so many more.

This became the model for moving Canterbury forward. It has been a journey of faith, hope and love. We have been surprised by grace, amazed at timely provision, and guided by wisdom from bishops and leaders. There were moments that we were hanging by a thread, and God showed himself to be our strength.

I am happy to report to you that in the fall of 2015 Canterbury is growing stronger every day. God has brought us strategic partners to share this ministry.

Every Tuesday at 7 a.m., 80 to 100 men gather for an ecumenical Bible study with Dr. Pete Alwinson of Key Life Network. Emmaus School of Biblical Studies has relocated its ministry to the Canterbury campus and will launch a full school in August 2016. (Read about them in this special Canterbury

section). We have amazing partners in both Rotary and Kiwanis.

Serving the Diocese We are blessed to have Daughters of the King, Cursillo, Diocesan Clergy Days, Clergy Conference, Women’s Retreats and many churches using Canterbury as a resource and location for gatherings. We understand and believe in Bishop Brewer’s vision for the diocese and see Canterbury as a strategic part of seeing that vision come to be.

We offer retreats and moments for spiritual growth, and many have been blessed by Dangerous Prayer Retreats. More of these types of retreats are coming in 2016. We are thrilled to be a place where folks can gain skills in leadership, worship, discipleship and everything they need to serve the Lord in their location. There is a listing of all the Canterbury events in the coming year. Join us at a retreat or summit or conference; you will be blessed as your cup will overflow!

Canterbury is most blessed in the friendship/ partnership with Church of the Incarnation, which worships on the campus and blesses Canterbury with prayer, finances, fellowship and a formal sacramental ministry and presence. Incarnation became a parish at Diocesan Convention this past January, and they are growing and bearing fruit. I appreciate the gentle and kind presence of their rector, Fr. Rory Harris. He is a true friend: wise, encouraging and supportive. It is truly a complementary relationship between Canterbury and Incarnation, and both are blessed in these efforts.

A Kingdom Ministry – It is a joy to see churches from Central Florida and beyond share in the ministry of Canterbury. There is truly an ecumenical feel as we gather from various tribes of faith with a common effort to lift up Jesus together in this world!

The Canterbury Brand – This past year has seen the board and staff hone down on understanding what we offer to people. Canterbury is a place to dream and discover; a sacred space to be still and

pray; a place of connection; a place to grow and learn; a place for healing. We see the ministry of the Messiah take place on this holy landscape … The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; to grant to those who mourn in Zion—to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he may be glorified (Isaiah 61:1–3).

Canterbury is a sacramental ministry mediating the presence of Christ through a ministry and the spiritual gift of hospitality. In every Eucharistic Prayer in the Book of Common Prayer there is a portion of the prayer called the Epiclesis. These words are spoken over the elements, asking the Holy Spirit to make the bread and wine the sacraments of Christ’s body and blood. Over the years, from the very beginning, an Epiclesis has been spoken over Canterbury. It is truly a sacred space, set apart for the Lord’s dwelling. I know deep within my heart that God simply delights in Canterbury and what happens in people’s lives when they come on the campus. Canterbury is an outpost of the Kingdom of God, and when people visit, they get an audience with the King and enter into joy.

A few years back, we wondered if we were going to make it. Almighty God saved Canterbury, and now we are discovering why.

A Canterbury Tale

I

have had an unquiet mind most of my life. That is not an easy confession to make, but it wasn’t an easy thing to live with. And when I say an unquiet mind, I simply mean that I suffered a kind of chronic restlessness, a kind of hunger, I suppose; one that is difficult to shake, medicate or shoo away. This condition followed me throughout childhood, through high school and even through college. I think I majored in psychology to try to understand it, or learn how to get out of its way. Even so, for all my effort, I could not pinpoint it, predict it, say what it was, or give it a name.

It’s not that I couldn’t function, but there always seemed to be noise in the background. It wasn’t until I graduated from college and began to play music full time that it seemed to go quiet. Music was one of the few medications that seemed to work. In time, the restlessness returned and in full adult strength. Had I not given my life to the Lord in 1981, I am not sure I would have ever known true peace. I made peace not only with God, but also with my own heart.

I married in 1984. The girl I married had a son, so now I was a father. We had another child in 1986. All this time I was engaged in full-time music ministry, singing and playing in churches, festivals and retreats—and for years. Those years seemed to smile upon us.

Part of my defense was to journal. I would be up most mornings by 4:30, on the living-room floor with a Bible, a notebook and a supply of no. 2 pencils.

I still have more than 300 journals that I have kept over the years. Most of my journaling is pure whine and bad poetry, though a few of the latter ones began to show promise. I write books now, so I suppose the journals represent some evolutionary state. The point is, it was a way to beat back the devil, so to speak; the “black dog,” as Churchill called it. That might be overstating it, but I always felt like I had to do something to stay ahead of the creature.

If I learned anything during those years (and am still learning), it is that quiet is a necessity—a cessation, an end to toil. If I have learned anything else, it is that quiet is difficult to find in a noisy world, in a demanding Facebook/ Twitter world that is always on, always begging for our attention.

Years ago, I was invited to Canterbury Retreat & Conference Center by a good friend of mine, Jon Davis (now Fr. Jon Davis). I came to Central Florida often at his request to minister, to play music and to talk about my books; in churches, wherever or whoever would have me. What enchanted me the most was Canterbury itself.

As soon as you turn off Alafaya Trail you enter another world: an older, quieter world; one that sleeps deeply at night, that can hear itself think in the daytime; a world that continually improves and yet never changes, like quiet never changes or the peace of God. For me, it was like discovering the medicine that had eluded me most of my life. I had to journey there to enjoy it, which made it even better. Tranquility is something worth pursuing,

CANTERBURY worthy of whatever pilgrimage it asks of you.

Fr. Jon uses the term “sacred space” to describe the grounds at Canterbury. Once you are there, it is easy to understand what he means by that, and I am not sure there is a better pair of words to define it. But I want to add something to that.

I was given an old guitar a few years ago, one that was made the year I was born (the particular year I will keep to myself ). It was given to me by an old friend, a woman who used to baby-sit me as a newborn. It was her mother’s guitar. I was around it often as a toddler and even borrowed it when I was 8 to enter a talent contest at my school. I won the contest with that guitar. It was a part of my life then, and now it is mine, and by miracle. I am certain of that.

When Charlotte first brought me the guitar, because of its advanced age, I was sure the neck would be bowed or the top warped. I assumed it would be unplayable after so much time, that it would end its days hanging on my wall. Not to mention that it had been in Charlotte’s closet for 12 years, set aside, unplayed and unenjoyed (no metaphor escaped my attention).

As I lifted it out of the case, I admit my surprise. It was beautiful. The spruce top had turned a lovely amber. All parts were accounted for. All that was supposed to be straight was straight. I had brought new strings with me that day, in case it was playable. I put them on, tuned it and sat down to play, still not expecting much. Because of the seasoning, and perhaps even the memory in the wood—or maybe because the old thing was tired of being silent for so many years—it cried in my hands.

I couldn’t stop playing. Indeed, I couldn’t keep my hands off the thing.

One night shortly after that, I started playing it at 9 o’clock at night. When I looked at the clock again, it was 3 a.m.

My playing improved. My ear improved. My touch. My sensitivity. The step of my fingers. I felt an energy and forward movement I hadn’t felt since my 20s. This old guitar brought music out of me that I would never have expected. It taught me a subtlety and a finesse that has even affected my writing. More than anything else, it changed me.

The same can be said of Canterbury. For all its beauty and old charm, all its vastness, all its solitudes, its deep medicines and quiet, the grounds themselves are just grounds. But trust me: it is worth the pilgrimage. It can and will liberate the sacred in you, the divine; make the introduction between you and the transcendent. It has been designed for just that purpose. With love, and with quiet in mind.

But here is the point I want to make: Canterbury is much like that old guitar. In one sense, it is just a few buildings, well-kept grounds, some quiet walking paths and a lake; the same way the old guitar is just aged wood, metal strings, pegs, bits of mother-of-pearl, and fine craftsmanship. To call Canterbury a sacred space, however, is to imply the same transcendence I discovered between me and my old guitar. And the truth is, as magnificently as it played, it simply made the introduction, the introduction between me and some neglected or unrefined part of me.

The guitar itself was not enchanted; it simply brought out the enchanted in me. The virtuosity was in me the entire time. The guitar just liberated it.

A pilgrim.

Canterbury Welcomes Emmaus Ministries School We are anticipating a great 2016 academic year!

O

n Sept. 1, a new season began for Emmaus Ministries as they relocated from Western North Carolina to Central Florida in partnership with Canterbury Retreat & Conference Center.

Emmaus has been in existence for the last nine years as a 10-month residential Bible school, taking students from all career, educational and religious backgrounds through the entire content of the Bible while living in a community of discipleship. The name “Emmaus” comes from Luke 24, which culminates in Luke 24:32, when the disciples have just finished their Emmaus Road walk with Jesus and reflect upon their time with Him, saying:

“Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the scriptures?”

Emmaus Ministries desires to see the hearts of all believers captivated with the unveiled scriptures as they learn to, in the words of Proper 28: “Read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them.” While their primary program will always be the Emmaus School of Biblical Studies (ESBS), Emmaus also desires to equip the body of Christ with the Word of God through teaching and training seminars.

Here are a few of the ways they seek to do this: Why the Bible Matters (1 hour): Find out why the Bible is essential to the life of a follower of Christ.

Book Studies (2 hour): Spend two hours diving into the history behind a specific book of the Bible.

Bible Overview (4 hours): Discover where the books of the Bible fit within the history of God and his people.

Inductive Bible Study (4-6 hours): Learn how to observe, interpret and apply the scriptures for yourselves.

The School of Biblical Studies is a residential discipleship school located at Canterbury Retreat & Conference Center in Oviedo. The school takes students through the content of the entire Bible in 10 months. Students learn to observe, interpret and apply the Bible using the Inductive Bible Study method, studying the text in its historical and literary context. This academic curriculum is blended with authentic community that is intentional about discipleship, spiritual growth, life-giving fellowship and spiritual disciplines.

Our Statement of Faith: The Bible The Bible is the authoritative and infallible Word of God, written by human authors whose words were inspired by God. The Bible contains timeless truths applicable to all people, all cultures and all time. The Bible is the final authority in all matters of God’s truth, spirituality, and the redemption of humanity from sin through the finished work of Jesus Christ.

God There is one eternal God, existing in three persons (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) who are of one substance and equal in power and glory. God is the creator and sustainer of the universe and all that is in it. God is holy and just, as well as merciful and full of grace. God is all-powerful, all-knowing and unchanging.

Jesus Christ Jesus Christ is the Son of God, the Redeemer of humanity, and the Messiah prophesied by the Old Testament scriptures. Jesus was born of a virgin and was both fully human and fully God. Christ’s life,

The Holy Spirit

Culture is the political, religious, social, economic, philosophical and artistic context in which every human being lives, relative to the time and geographic location of their existence. Culture largely determines the way people view and interpret the world in which they live. God’s Word and the gospel of Jesus Christ transcend culture and are applicable to all people, in all cultures, for all times.

The Holy Spirit is one of three persons of the Triune Godhead. The Holy Spirit is resident in every Christian from the moment of salvation, empowering each one with gifts and fruits according to God’s purposes.

Humanity Humanity was created by God, in the image of God, and for fellowship with God. Through the sin of Adam (Genesis 3), humanity was cursed and took on a fallen, sinful nature. Sin is contradictory to the nature of God and is the reason for the evil that exists in the world today.

Salvation Every individual human inherits the sinful nature of mankind and is subsequently in need of salvation. Faith in Christ, based on his substitutionary life, death and resurrection, is the sole means by which human sin can be forgiven and individuals can be restored to fellowship with God. The Church The church is universal and apostolic and is the primary tangible representation of the kingdom of God on the earth. The church is called to fellowship with God, as well as to fellowship with itself through interpersonal relationships and local congregational bodies. It is the responsibility of the church to help bring the lost into relationship with God by faithfully proclaiming God’s truth and by living lives that bear witness to the gospel of Jesus Christ.

2016 Icon Writing Workshop July 24-29 Teresa Harrison will be teaching iconography, called icon writing, which is actually a painting process. Iconography introduces ancient Greek and Russian artistic styles. This is a beginner course, but experienced iconographers will also find it rewarding. No art experience is needed, just a willingness to allow God to work through the step by step process. Each brush stroke is intended to be a prayer.

It Takes Teamwork to Make the Dream Work We Have a Great Team

F

all is here, and we are actively in the football season, participating in Fantasy Football leagues. We at Canterbury have our own league with 10 teams (employees) battling it out every Sunday for top spot. This is a fun activity for our staff as we strategize to plan out our rosters for the best players who can make a difference in winning and losing.

This reminds me of our team at Canterbury, as we have a select group of individuals who share in the passion and goals of creating the best retreat center under God’s direction. I feel blessed for the team we have at Canterbury and want to share some of the highlights from this past year.

Currently, we have 18 employees, both full- and part-time workers, who serve at Canterbury. Our team is divided into different departments: Hospitality, Food Service, Maintenance, Accounting and Guest Services.

Each department has subcategories based on job diversity and unique skill sets.

Sue Grosso is in charge of Guest Services, handling reservations and lodging requests.

She manages Ellen, Caroline and Peggy on scheduling and job responsibilities. In addition, Sue handles the many marketing activities by visiting churches, organizations and association meetings to promote Canterbury. She is also our resident photographer, taking photos for our website, literature and brochures. She is committed every day to her job and dedicated to the mission of Canterbury. She is a self-starter and great for any job lineup. I would draft her anytime to work at Canterbury.

Our Accounting department is managed with strategy and accuracy, serving our guests with conflict-free invoices and billings. Geri and Martha share this responsibility to create stressfree accounting with great understanding and compassion. With the structure our books reflect, the attention to details, and with a clear understanding of our finances and budgets, they are great draft picks and want our team to succeed.

The Hospitality department comprises several employees who share responsibility with the Food Service department. These employees, Faith, Kim and Judy, are under the direction of Teri Garcia, who is our captain for housekeeping and food service. Not only is she a great cook, she is also a clean freak when it comes to our rooms and meeting spaces.

She leads the team in room preparations and laundry service as well as selecting individuals who work on our kitchen staff. Abigail and James pitch in to offer our guests the highest quality meals and services. Teri’s long history with Canterbury is the reason she is so versatile in many departments and leads our team to greater success and service.

This brings up our defense in the Maintenance department. I am privileged to lead this team of Wyatt, Tom and Earl, who do preventive operations to maintain our campus and grounds. Monitoring our air-conditioning units, providing building updates and landscaping our grounds are nonstop tasks, and necessary to keep our facilities up to date and operational for our guests and staff.

This completes our lineup as we seek the guidance of God and direction to offer the best retreat and conference center we can for His people. In all that we do, we serve to please and glorify our Lord Jesus Christ, the Coach of our lives.

Faith, Teri and Kim Working in the Canterbury kitchen is truly a blessing. We get to work side-by-side with a wonderful group of people who are passionate and dedicated to the mission of Canterbury. But, these people are not just co-workers, they’re family. Together, we try to serve our guests just as we would our own families. Although we can make a fancy meal, most of our food is home style, and our guests really seem to appreciate and enjoy it. In fact, we often receive requests for recipes.

The following recipe is one that’s been requested a lot. We call it Skylar’s Parmesan Tilapia. The name comes from one of our former employees, Skylar, who wanted to learn how to make fish.

After he learned the recipe, we changed it to reflect his name.

Skylar’s Parmesan Tilapia 4 tilapia fillets 2 tablespoons lemon juice ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese 4 tablespoons butter, room temperature 3 tablespoons mayonnaise or ranch dressing 3 tablespoons onion powder ¼ teaspoon Old Bay seasoning ¼ teaspoon dried basil black pepper 1 dash hot pepper or 1 teaspoon cayenne powder

• Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

• Put tilapia in baking dish in single layer.

• Brush with lemon juice.

• In a bowl, combine Parmesan cheese, butter, mayonnaise, onion powder and seasonings.

• Mix well.

• Bake fish in oven until it just starts to flake…about 10-15 minutes, depending on thickness of fish.

• Spread cheese mixture on top of each fillet.

• Put back in oven and bake until it turns golden brown, about five minutes.

• Take out and enjoy!

Annual Clergy Conference at Canterbury Center Welcomes the Rev. Canon Dr. Ashley Null Our annual conference is drawing near once again.

This year it is being held from Monday, Oct. 26, through Thursday, Oct. 29.

St. Gabriel’s Second Annual Conference and Healing Mission St. Gabriel’s, with co-sponsor the Space Coast Chapter of the International Order of St. Luke the Physician, are holding their second annual healing conference, from Thursday Oct. 15 through Saturday Oct. 17.

Our keynote speaker is the Rev. Canon Dr. Ashley Null, author of Thomas Cranmer’s Doctrine of Repentance: Renewing the Power to Love. Null is an internationally respected scholar on the grace and gratitude theology of the English Reformation.

Holding research degrees from Yale and the University of Cambridge, he has received numerous awards for his work, including Fulbright, National Endowment for the Humanities and Guggenheim fellowships. He has also been elected fellow of the Royal Historical Society and the Society of Antiquaries of London.

He currently holds a research post funded by the German Research Council at Humboldt University of Berlin and is a visiting fellow at the Divinity faculty of Cambridge University and at St. John’s College, Durham University.

This year’s keynote speakers are the Rev. Hugh and Monte Bromiley and the Rev. Dr. Sharon Lewis.

In addition to his scholarly activities, Null is an ordained Episcopal priest, canon theologian of the Episcopal Diocese of Western Kansas, theological adviser to the ACNA Diocese of the Carolinas and senior fellow of the Ridley Institute of St. Andrew’s; Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.

Dr. Lewis is the executive director of Amazing Love Healing Ministry. She offers education and training in healing to individuals nationally and internationally.

Hugh Bromiley has been in the healing ministry of our Lord Jesus Christ for 25 years. He is the author of In Search of a Miracle, a popular book on the healing power of the Lord.

He has recently been elected to become the next North American director of the International Order of St. Luke.

Monte Bromiley is an ordained minister who works one-onone to bring wholeness and freedom. For nearly 30 years her ministry, Beth Shalom, has been a source of healing and deliverance to hurting people. Monte’s workshops offer training and equipping for those who have a heart for the “brokenhearted and captive” and wish to learn more about kingdom principles in this area.
