Celebrating 60 Years Since 1956, when Frostburg State University presented the now world-famous Joffrey Ballet in its premiere performance, FSU has served as a prominent community arts presenter. The University’s Cultural Events Series (CES) offers an annual professional performing arts season involving international artists whose presence might otherwise be unheard of in a rural region. Legendary, world-class performers in diverse performing arts genres have graced CES stages over the years, including the Martha Graham Dance Company, country and bluegrass musician Kathy Mattea, actors John Astin and Jack Klugman, and The Acting Company. Add to these a multitude of GRAMMY nominees and winners.

To further contribute to the local arts environment, an annual schedule of supplementary activities ensures that community members are able to connect with professional artists beyond performance attendance. Examples include lectures, workshops, masterclasses, children’s performances and even opportunities for community members to appear onstage with the artists. Another significant component of CES is the Experiential Education Program, which provides FSU students with valuable curricular and co-curricular experiences. Working behind the scenes, hard-working students gain firsthand experiences in the professional world and develop essential life skills in time management, collaboration, teamwork and leadership. Each year brings new commitment to provide greater accessibility to the world of the arts. We trust that long after our programs have ended, community members will remember their experiences and maintain an avid appreciation for the arts. We look forward to the next 60 years!
