My Wife Loves By Scott Smith

My wife loves Yelp. She checks in every time we are out to eat and uses the app to find out where to eat when we are traveling, paying close attention to reviews. I bet you do the same thing. Maybe you don’t use Yelp, but I would guess you look at online reviews of some sort. These reviews are not just important to the consumer, but also to companies.

It used to be that companies looked solely at the bottom line as a measure of success. This isn’t the case any longer. Companies are now very tuned into to customer reviews and now hold them as a measure of success. Today, managers must make sure their stores are both profitable and consumer friendly. Customer feedback has always played a key role in how companies market to consumers. Maybe you have filled out survey about a specific product or you may have even taken part in a focus group. That type of feedback is still done today when a company rolls out a new product, but many companies are now doing exactly what you do - looking at online customer reviews. Why are companies so interested in online reviews? It’s simple - people read them and, more importantly, trust them. A survey conducted by BrightLocal.com showed that 88 percent of consumers hold as much trust in an online review as a personal recommendation. That same survey noted that 85 percent of consumers read up to ten reviews before they trust a business and 88 percent have read a review to “determine the quality of a local business.” A study by Google revealed that over 67 percent of consumers are influenced by online reviews. Clearly consumers are reading and placing meaning in online reviews. Yelp reviews can have a significant impact on a business. Yelp is important as 98 percent of Yelp users claim they have made a purchase at a business they found on the app. A one star increase on Yelp can boost a business’ revenue by up to nine percent. On the other hand, one negative review can cost a business up to 30 customers. Remember, consumers are more likely to share a negative review rather than a positive one. Be careful when considering those reviews. Regulators are concerned about the growing number of paid reviewers companies are hiring to post positive reviews. Oh, and be careful when you go to post a negative review. A recent ABC News story covered how a small hotel had a $500 “fine” in their event contracts for guests giving negative online reviews. Yelp claims 80 percent of all reviews are positive, which sounds good unless your business has a negative review, potentially costing you customers. So, don’t just look at reviews, but leave one as well. Did you get good service? Leave a review. Was the food delicious? Leave a review. Was your shopping experience better than anticipated? You guessed it - leave a review. If you want to continue to have a good experience at your favorite store or restaurant, leave a review. Your review could be the one that brings in a new customer.

SOCAL GAS Every winter the demand for natural gas increases as we heat our homes and businesses. This winter, we are facing limited availability of natural gas locally. That's why we are asking all Southern Californians to work together to help conserve natural gas on certain days. If a SoCalGas Advisory is called, you can help by lowering your thermostat to 68 degrees, waiting a day to use major natural gas appliances and washing with cold water when possible. Sign up at www.socalgas.com to receive SoCalGas Advisories if an advisory is called, or call 1-800-427-2200 for more information.
