The United States of America has long been a crucible of cultures where different ideas can interact and evolve.
The nation’s food industry is a prime example of this concept at work, and for centuries, US food companies have celebrated the country’s diverse population through innovative traditional cuisines.
Based in Rockway, New Jersey, Cibao Meat Products has been bringing the authentic flavours of Latin America to people across the USA for more than five decades. Having started as a small sausage manufacturer serving the local Dominican community, Cibao has become a trusted provider of traditional flavours for Latino families throughout the United States.
“Cibao Meat Products is really more than a company,” asserts president Heinz Vieluf Jr. “It is a 55-year-old bridge between tradition and innovation.
“This company has always been about family and tradition. What sets us apart is how we stay true to our roots, while constantly pushing forward with new products and the latest technologies.”
Cibao was founded in 1969 by Heinz’s grandfather, Siegfried Vieluf. A German immigrant, Siegfried Vieluf travelled to the
US via the Dominican Republic, with few connections and without proficiency in either English or Spanish. It was a bold and ambitious endeavour that Heinz still admires today.
“I think we take it for granted when we enjoy a certain upbringing where we feel a sense of comfort and belonging,” he says. “My grandfather knew he was taking a risk, especially considering he made that journey back in the 1950/60s.
Decades later, we owe the success of this company to my grandfather’s willingness to seize the opportunity of a lifetime.”
In 2024, Cibao celebrated its 55th anniversary, giving Heinz and the team a chance to look back over the organisation’s journey so far. Though much has changed in five and a half decades, the company continues to honour its roots.
“We don’t cut corners,” Heinz declares. “Cibao is still a family company built on quality and authenticity. Every product we make is carefully developed to

reflect the authentic flavours our customers grew up with. We’re proud to create foods that aren’t just products but memories.”
“For many of our customers, opening a pack of our salami or chorizo is like being transported back to their grandmother’s kitchen. You cannot fake that emotional, generational connection between food and happiness.”
When it comes to manufacturing the company’s products, Heinz challenges the Cibao team to approach their work with the same care and attention that Siegfried Vieluf once did. From meat processing to grinding and seasoning, Cibao is committed to producing items that feel part of a traditional culinary experience.
Cibao’s current product range includes a wide variety of Hispanic style meat products. The company’s best-selling items include Induveca © salami – a popular staple in Dominican households across the US; Cibao Longaniza – a Spanish style sausage with spices and natural pork casing; and El Parcero © Chorizo – a Columbian chorizo that ranks among Cibao’s top new products.
“I think these three products best showcase our innovation and tradition of quality,” Heinz states. “We respect the traditions of different Latin cultures, while maintaining the high standards that our customers expect.”
Some of the largest demographic shifts in the United States of late have occurred within the Latin American population, which is not just growing but diversifying. Cibao has witnessed these changes first-hand, and the company is receiving increasing demand from a range of communities with roots in Central America, South America, and the Caribbean.
“These demographic shifts, and the customer demands that come with them, are really shaping our product development,” Heinz points out. “There’s also been a rise in the popularity of healthier options with lower sodium and cleaner labels. We’ve even begun to develop plant-based alternatives, so we are not afraid to innovate upon traditional products to meet the needs of today’s consumer.”
Even during the Covid-19 pandemic, Cibao persisted in providing its customers with the products they love. Deemed an essential business, the company introduced new technologies and protocols to ensure that it could keep employees safe, while satisfying consumer demand.

“We brought in thermal imaging cameras from England, set up tiered shifts, and arranged private transportation for employees who didn’t feel safe on public transit,” Heinz reveals. “Honestly though, the most important thing we did during the pandemic was to lean into our emotional intelligence and listen. We created an environment where employees felt heard, and that helped us build trust and reduce anxiety.”
Cibao has carried its steady, human approach to people management into the present day. Determined to be a learning organisation that evolves with its workforce, the company sees people at the heart of everything it does.
“Obviously we’re a family business and that’s something that people really like when they walk through our doors,” Heinz comments. “At the same time though, we have grown
into a medium-sized operation with over 200 employees, so we have to make sure we bring in, and develop, talented people.
“We invest in our team by hosting regular workshops and constantly updating our practices. We have operated a flexible work-from-home policy since the pandemic, and more recently, we ran a very successful AI workshop for our administrative team. Our goal, ultimately, is to create an environment where people don’t just work, they grow.”
Continuous development is not just a goal for Cibao employees but an organisation -wide pursuit. Led by Heinz, Cibao remains adept at balancing tradition with progress and blending passionate people with cutting edge technology.
“I have an insatiable desire for improvement. I embrace change, so I am always searching out opportunities for growth,” Heinz remarks. “Some of our latest efforts to adapt and evolve have seen us prioritise operational excellence, introducing motion studies to streamline processes and moving from sequential production to parallel workflows.
“Chasing operational excellence has allowed us to move from semi-automation to full-automation, while investments in AI and robotics has helped us stay ahead in a fast-paced industry. It’s not about replacing people but giving them better tools to do their jobs, so that Cibao products remain authentic and popular for generations to come.”
Calm, decisive, and deeply analytical, Heinz has enabled Cibao with the confidence and clarity the business needs to move forward and achieve its goals. Excited by the organisation’s potential, the president lays out his vision for the future:
“Right now, we’re looking to expand into frozen meat manufacturing and launching more new products to suit changing customer needs,” Heinz reports. “Operationally, we will continue to embrace automation, robotics, and AI as we strive to work smarter, faster, and more sustainably.
“No matter how much we innovate, our foundation will always be the same: authentic products, exceptional quality, and a deep respect for the communities we serve. Our future will honour the legacy we’ve built at Cibao as we shape the industry, while staying true to who we are.”
