Member Spotlight: Steve Jackson and Donna Stewart

exciting achievements this year included the launch of a new responsive website with better mobile interaction with Centris. The new design includes our blog that is regularly updated with information about ways to help you manage your hard-earned money Please read about Centris members Steve Jackson and Donna Stewart who are featured in this issue’s spotlight section. They are making a difference in the lives of so many in our communities. Steve is currently serving as the President of the Susan G. Komen Great Plains Board of Directors. Many of you know that Centris is a proud sponsor of the Race for the Cure in addition to many other worthwhile causes in the communities we serve. I give you and your family my best wishes for a successful and prosperous 2017! I look forward to sharing many more accomplishments with you in the coming months.

President’s Message Happy New Year! As I think about all of the wonderful opportunities that 2017 brings for Centris I first must share with you some of our successes during 2016. I am very proud of our staff and what they accomplished this past year. Like many employers, we invest time and money into helping our employees be their best. This makes us a better credit union and allows us to offer products and services you need. When our staff is highly engaged in their work, we know they are doing their best to serve you. Recent employee surveys show that our staff is engaged and accountable for their actions. They are consistently thinking of ways to do their job better, and they feel loyal to you, our members. Member surveys support this employee feedback with very high member service scores. On behalf of all of our employees, thank you for your membership and for voting Centris Federal Credit Union the Best Credit Union in Omaha Magazine’s Best of Omaha for the eighth year in a row! We are also making investments in new and improved facilities. In June, we opened our 12th branch at 518 East Broadway in Council Bluffs. It is a beautiful, open space with a technology bar and a modern design. If you have not been to the branch yet, I encourage you to visit. This fall, we began a major remodel of our branch near 114th & W. Dodge Road in Omaha. We are excited about this space and the efficiencies it will bring to our staff so they may serve you better. Finally, in mid-2017, we will break ground on our 13th location near 192nd and Harrison Streets in the Falling Waters subdivision. This new branch will allow us to be more convenient to members who live in southwest Omaha near Millard and Gretna. In addition to our facilities projects, staff have been working behind the scenes to ensure we are meeting all of your financial needs today and into the future. Other

Tips to Help You Avoid Identity Theft

Every two seconds an American becomes a victim of identity theft. If the thought of having to clean up your credit report because someone stole your identity frightens you, and you don’t want to become another statistic; here are some tips to stack the odds in your favor. 1. A winning night, can turn into a nightmare really fast if your wallet is lost, or stolen, especially if personal information like your social security card is in there. Do not carry your social security card. And, just as importantly, make copies of all your cards. That way, if they’re stolen you can report it fast, and accurately. 2. You can bet that if you use easy to guess passwords and PINS—like your house number, or birth date—some hacker will figure it out. Use a mix of symbols and numbers, and upper and lower case letters.

Together, we’re growing strong!

We look forward to seeing you at the Annual Meeting. Voting Procedures If a petition for nomination is submitted, and the Nomination Committee selects a candidate, an election by ballot will take place. 3. Use your instinct. If an overly generic email address doesn’t look legit, don’t reply and don’t click on any links. Go to your account log-ins manually by using a bookmark or typing in the URL. 4. Know that your credit union will never call or email asking for your social security number or birth date. If a business or individual asks for personal information, passwords or credit card numbers--do not give them. Instead, call any financial institution requesting information directly at a number you know is legitimate. 5. Make sure all your electronic devices are as secure as possible by updating your operating systems, software and

browsers; being up-to-date will minimize chances of being hacked. Also, password-protect all of your devices, so that if stolen, logging in will be more difficult. 6. Shred. Yes, some of the easiest targets for identity thieves are home trash bins. Shred invoices, financial statements or any other personal type documents. Don’t just toss them out; shred them. 7. Check your online banking accounts and credit reports regularly. There are three credit-reporting bureaus - a trifecta for analyzing your activity. Check a different bureau every four months at www.annualcreditreport.com. If you see anything suspicious, report it. Professionally, Stewart is a Ph. D. licensed psychologist at Boys Town where she manages their two community behavioral health clinics – one in north Omaha and one in south Omaha. The clinics serve the under-insured and low socio-economic populations and provide individual, family and group therapy. Their mission is to keep families intact through intervention and preventative services. Through her career, she intrinsically helps others, but her dedication to the community goes beyond her nine to five hours. Growing up, her parents set a great example of serving the community, and Stewart developed the same passion. Her various commitments include:

• Encouraging people to vote through Warren Buffet’s Drive2Vote campaign • Coaching her children’s various athletic teams • Assisting with her daughter’s Girl Scout troop • Actively participating in the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Omaha alumnae chapter • Volunteering at Salem Baptist Church in the children’s church ministry

Stewart is also a Promise Me leader. The Promise Me program is an extension of Susan G. Komen Great Plains (formally Susan G. Komen Nebraska) and according to their website, “encourages women to make a personal promise to prioritize their own health and well-being. The goal of the program is to encourage women to get regular breast health screenings”. The Promise Me program provides mammograms through Methodist Hospital to anyone who needs one regardless of if they can pay or not. As a leader, Stewart facilitates small group informational sessions about breast health for African American women.

Member Spotlight: Steve Jackson and Donna Stewart “The more we grow as a family, Centris represents what we stand for,” said Centris member, Steve Jackson. Steve Jackson became a Centris member 13 years ago when he married his wife, Donna Stewart. As a child, Stewart’s mother belonged to a credit union in St. Louis and taught Stewart how to save her money at the credit union. From then on, no matter where she lived, Stewart continued that credit union relationship. Upon marrying Jackson, she encouraged him to open an account.

“Regardless of how Donna and I initially connected to credit unions, it’s more important why we have stayed,” Jackson said. Both Jackson and Stewart believe in the credit union philosophy of making the community a better place through volunteerism and helping people. They see Centris as a great collaborative partnership. “Centris is a place we can trust,” Stewart said. “It’s an extension of our family and a community resource that helps our children develop financial responsibility.” Not only do Jackson and Stewart believe in what Centris stands for, but they take it to heart in their own lives. To say that they are active in the community would be an understatement.

The Susan G. Komen Great Plains connection runs in the family as Jackson is the Board of Directors, President. Fortunately for Komen, Jackson’s position as the Health Promotions Supervisor at the Douglas County Health Department makes him a great asset to the organization. He was able to join the board, add diversity and shed light on various health initiatives. Every f our to f ive years, Komen performs a needs’ assessment of breast health issues for the state of Nebraska (Nebraska community profile). Jackson immediately stepped into the role of organizing a team and utilizing his community and academic connections to conduct interviews, surveys and analysis. According to the 2015 Community Profile Report, “getting regular mammograms (and treatment if diagnosed) lowers the risk of dying from breast cancer. Screening mammography can find breast cancer early, when the chances of survival are the highest”.

As the President, it is Jackson’s responsibility to seek out community grant money and disperse to state-wide organizations who promote positive breast health and screening. Jackson devotes many hours a week to Komen as well as the Omaha National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). He started as a volunteer in 2003 and has held various volunteer positions since including his most recent as the second vice president and member of the executive committee specifically the health committee. Through his career at the Douglas County Health Department, Jackson is responsible for community health education, and his main responsibilities include:

• Infant mortality • Chronic disease prevention • Preventing the spread of tobacco use • Vulnerable populations (minorities and refugees) • Branding and marketing the health department • Seeking out grant money

Jackson and Stewart are a dynamic duo who recognizes the importance of giving back to the community through their careers and volunteerism. Jackson acknowledges the fact that being so active in the community is a balancing act with his family and career. However, he and his wife are trying to instill selflessness in their children (Arie, 7, and Myles, 10). The children often join their parents at the various committee meetings and activities.

“Volunteering gives me a sense of purpose and makes me realize the world isn’t just about me. There’s always someone in a situation far worse. You can always do something to help someone else,” said Jackson. The Jackson/Stewart family believes in bettering the community and in their credit union, Centris.

As for Erica … all other variables frozen, if she saves $14,000 per year, instead of $5,000 a year, at a consistent 8% yield for 20 years, her savings at the end of that two-decade period will be $691,921 rather than $247,115.1 Your risk exposure matters. In a perfect world, taking on X degree of risk would lead to Y degree of reward. If only it worked that way. Still, a portfolio that assumes reasonable levels of risk may generate better long-term returns than a highly conservative, risk-averse one. The inescapable truth of investing is that when you forfeit risk, you also often forfeit your potential for significant gains. To be more specific, getting out of equities when the market sours puts you on the sidelines when the market rallies. Should you abandon equities in a correction or bear market, you face another kind of risk – the risk of selling low and buying high.

Retirement Planning: What You Can and Cannot Control

If you absolutely detest risk and want to minimize your risk exposure as you save and invest for retirement, then you must compensate for that lessened risk exposure by saving more, whether in cash or conservative investment vehicles. Remember that to save more, you must also spend less.

Some things you have no influence over. You may have some power to affect other factors. Provided by Michael Sieler Are you worried about retiring? Many baby boomers are, and they have reason to be, given low interest rates, subpar returns on equities, increasing health care costs, and the issues facing Social Security. Now, do yourself a favor. Read that last sentence again, and ask yourself, “which of those four things can I control?” The correct answer: none of them. That may be frightening, but it is also truthful. As you plan for retirement, you must acknowledge that certain factors are beyond your control. As much as you would like to influence or change them, you have no say over them. So, what can you control? Primarily, three things: the way you save; the way you manage risk; and the way you will spend your savings. The way you save may be more important than the way you invest. Every saver hears about the benefits of an early start, and those benefits can be considerable. As an example, consider these hypothetical savers: Erica saves $5,000 per year for 20 years at an 8% return, and thanks to time, inflows, and compounding, she turns that initial $5,000 into $247,115 two decades later. Midway through this 20-year stretch, Giovanni, Erica’s co-worker, decides he will start saving too. Time is not such a good friend to him, however. If he wants to amass $247,115 (give or take a few bucks), he will have to pour in around $15,795 into his retirement account annually at that 8% yearly yield.

InTouch / Winter 2017

Will you plan how to spend your retirement savings? That will put you a step ahead of many retirees, who have no strategy whatsoever. You need to plan both the succession and amount of your retirement withdrawals – what annual percentage should be distributed from what accounts in what order. Four primary variables may affect your plan, and you arguably have some control over them all: your yearly withdrawal amount, your level of debt, your health, and your retirement date. You cannot control the tax code or the equities markets, but you can try to pay off debt, improve your health, spend reasonably, and work longer, if needed. Focus on what you can control. It may keep you from losing some sleep over what you cannot. Questions? Contact Mike at (402) 697-6726 or Mike.Sieler@CurnesGroup.com.
