Councilman DeJohn Public Comment at Council: Just the Facts Said What?

It was reported in the Central City News that "Councilman Louis DeJohn said that he thinks it would be a good thing if 100 percent of permit fees go to CH2MHILL." Untrue. The direct quote of what Councilman DeJohn said is, "I don't think the City ought to get a nickel out of it. The 10% was originally set up in case they weren't collecting enough money to cover the services without asking us to raise taxes. After three years I think we can safely say that that money is not necessary. So, what we are doing is we are taxing the people ourselves." "If they (the City) have a fee structure in which the City gets taxes, I would appreciate it if we would delinieate it and get it off there." It is painfully clear that Councilman DeJohn wants the 10% to

be given back to the taxpayers in the form of reduced permit fees, not that it be given to CH2M Hill. DeJohn spoke earlier in the meeting and defended the 90% of the fees collected by CH2M Hill, pointing out that they do 100% of the work. DeJohn's assertion is that any fee above what the City has agreed to pay for the services is in essence a tax levied by the City, and he wants that money left in the pockets of the taxpayers. Mr. DeJohn obviously said nothing about giving 100% of the fees to CH2M Hill, as was stated in Woody Jenkins' editorial in the Central City News. The audio recording of all Council meetings can be heard, free of charge, any business day, at the City Services office. The headline of an article in last week's Central City News read "Mayor's Plan Would Inhibit Public Comment at Council." This is simply untrue, because this is not the "Mayor's Plan". It is instead an Ordinance that the Mayor is required to enforce. The ordinance was enacted by the City Council in 2005 and enforcement of the ordinance was rightfully requested by current Councilman Wayne Messina. This Ordinance will remain in force unless the majority of the City Council votes to change it. The Mayor has no authority to change the Ordinance. EBRSO Looking for Man Seen Using Stolen Credit Card From the EBR Sheriff’s Office

East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Detectives are looking for a man seen using a stolen credit/debit card taken from a vehicle on the 5800 block of Mapleton Drive in Central on November 21, 2010 at approximately 4:30 a.m. According to reports, the burglar took a purse that contained a Neighbor’s Federal Credit Union issued VISA credit/debit card, a Neighbor’s Federal Credit Union checkbook, and approximately $10.00 in cash. The stolen credit/debit card was used at several different businesses located on O’Neal Lane between 5:15 am and 5:45 am on November 21, 2010. Detectives were able to obtain surveillance video from the RaceTrac on 2330 O’Neal Lane where the suspect bought a carton of cigarettes for $30.29. The suspect is described as a white male approximately 20 to 30 years of age. The white male was observed wearing a black colored hooded jacket and a black and white colored cap. The cap was white on the front half and black on the back half with a black brim.

Detectives also went to the McDonald’s, located at 2278 O'Neal Lane which they discovered at 5:24 am the stolen credit/debit card was swiped at the drive through window. McDonald’s surveillance video footage revealed that the same white male who was captured inside the RaceTrac store was captured on video while at the drive through window attempting to purchase an order using the stolen credit/debit card. The unknown white male was driving a red Chevy/GM model single cab truck. The truck had a light colored stripe on the bottom portion of the truck (possibly white or silver). The truck appeared to have been a late 80's to early 90's model truck with a dent in the left front fender and the left side of the hood Anyone with information concerning this incident or identify of the suspect is asked to contact the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office at 225-389-5000. Stemming the Tide in Central

Last week I met with three people representing the Amite River Basin Drainage and Water Conservation District; Dietmar Rietschier, Executive Director, Lawrence Callender, President and Larry Bankston, attorney. They were not only very helpful in answering questions, but excited at the degree of passion about the project. I understand their enthusiasm. It is not often that a project can be developed that results so clearly in a situation in which there is no real downside. So many government projects may primarily benefit one group of people, but cost another group of people in taxes. Some look like a sweet deal, but when you trace the funding, it’s really “robbing Peter to pay Paul.” For the residents of Central, the Comite Diversion Canal project benefits us and saves us money at the same time. What is the Comite River Diversion Plan? This is the largest flood control project in East Baton Rouge Parish since the construction of the Mississippi Levees in the 1930’s. The project is a 12 mile channel with a system of drop structures and pumps located between the Cities of Baker and Zachary. “The main purpose of the project is to divert 50% of the flood water from the upper Comite River subbasin during flooding events into the Mississippi River,” Director Rietschier said. “This diversion will result in substantial stage reductions primarily in the north-eastern part of East Baton Rouge Parish, primarily the City of Central. Approximately 60% of the 100-year floodplain in East Baton Rouge will be affected by this project.” If you have any recollection of the flooding here in the 1970’s through 1990’s, you are only beginning to know the potential impact. In the intervening 30 years since that time, literally thousands of acres of streets, buildings and non-permeable concrete parking lots have been built in the area. That means that the same conditions, causing the same rise in river waters could translate into even higher levels of flooding due to increased impediments to absorption and run off. In 2000 a 3 mill tax was approved by forward thinking voters in the midst of a drought. In October, 2010, again, the citizens within the taxing District approved a 2.65 mill tax. The Federal government required Louisiana through the Department of Transportation and Development and the Amite River Basin Commission to contribute funds for the project to be approved. Former Congressman Richard Baker was a champion of this cause. In this multi-jurisdictional project the funding is shared between the U S Army Corps of Engineers (federal) Louisiana State Department of Transportation and Development (State) and the Amite River Basin Commission (local). What is this going to cost me? As an example, if your home is valued at $150,000: A reduction in flood elevation of Estimated savings in annual flood ins. premium Cost of a 2.65 mill tax Estimated net annual savings to homeowner 1 foot $191.00 $19.88 $171.12 2 feet $262.00 $19.88 $242.12 So, as you see, Central residents will benefit from reduction to potential flood damage as well as a savings in flood insurance premiums. A more subtle, but real benefit is that of the increased property value of all of the land in the City of Central. Other than flood mitigation, what impact will this project have? After a lengthy planning and public participation process, several alternative, minimally invasive routes for this project were identified. Evaluations were done taking into account environmental affect on plant and animal life, archaeological and historical considerations such as, Indian mounds, logistic challenges such as gas line relocations, and cultural and aesthetic impact to the surrounding popula-

tion. To mitigate wetlands affected by the project within the right of way, 1484 acres of land along the Comite River will be purchased and preserved. The plan also calls for planting trees on 679 acres of cleared land. How will it be managed and maintained into the future? Upon completion there will be a flood plain management plan established by the commission that will outline policies and codes and regulations to be implemented in all local governments to prevent negation of this mitigation. The East Baton Rouge Government will be responsible for the maintenance of this canal once it is completed. What’s the hold up? The big challenge right now is the ticking clock. The conditions creating the major flood events of the past are not flukes; they will repeat themselves. The project is moving as fast as the money comes in, yet in the years since Congress approved the canal, costs of construction have risen and projected completion dates have been moved back. The Corps of Engineers has had to prioritize its resources to address the damage caused to New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina. The only funds that are up to date are the local match, which has allowed for the continuity of the construction. The slow acquisition of federal funds is a major factor in the delay of the project, but the bureaucracy of acquiring property is also an excruciatingly time-consuming process. Lane Closure Next Week on Greenwell Springs Road Northbound and Southbound LA 37 (Greenwell Springs Rd) in Baton Rouge from Sullivan Rd. to S.JCT. LA 64. One lane may be closed from Monday night, December 27 to Wednesday night, December 29. Lane closures will be allowed from 7:00pm to 5:30am the following day in both the Northbound & Southbound directions while crews work on Asphaltic Concrete mill and overlay work. One lane will remain open to traffic at all times. This lane closure has no vehicle restrictions and no detour is necessary. This lane closure is subject to change depending on adverse weather conditions. DOTD appreciates your patience and reminds you to please drive with caution through the construction site and be on the lookout for work crews and their equipment.

Greenwell Springs Road Overlay Update

Our contractor has completed asphalt patching work and the majority of asphalt milling operations. The milled asphalt surface is what you are riding on now and is required prior to placement of the new asphalt. The cold weather has delayed progress somewhat since we cannot put down new asphalt pavement if the temperature is below 50 degrees. Weather permitting, the contractor plans to begin paving asphalt after the first of the year.

CCAF Meeting Update Judy Garwood’s New Book Touches

The Central Community Assistance Foundation (CCAF) continues to grow and evolve as this non-profit group collects more resources to help Central’s students. The CCAF was formed in an effort to support and assist Central students and their families who are in transition (those who are going through times of hardship or through a crisis like a house fire). The Foundation aims to assist students in Central’s public, private, and home schools, as the need arises. The CCAF has been together for over a year now, bringing in more community-minded Central citizens with every step. The Central Community Assistance Foundation met this month at Central Intermediate School, where the various committees shared their progress and more interested citizens joined the effort to help Central’s students. At the meeting, the new CCAF logo was unveiled after Bone Marketing, the company that designed the logo options, accepted public votes to choose the logo. Thank you to everyone who voted! Each of the committees met at the meeting and had an opportunity to share their progress. The Clothing Committee has assisted 11 families already with uniforms and sweatshirts for the winter. Most of these families are in need of blue jeans and jackets, so this committee is beginning to gather those items for the families. If you have jeans or jackets to donate, you may also bring them to the School Board Office, c/o Dr. Janet Stevens. The Food Committee has helped 3 families recently in Central. The Central Food Bank is currently helping with this effort, and their assistance is much appreciated. Central Intermediate School students recently did their part to help, collecting two baskets of food for CCAF. The Fundraising Committee has been hard at work. They recently designed a new fundraising program, called the CCAF Treasure Chest. The program gives local individuals and businesses the opportunity to become one of the CCAF “Foundation Jewels.” The donation levels are as follows:

The CCAF is looking for more community volunteers, as everyone has something different to offer to the group. Thank you to the Central community for the support that has been shown to this young organization. At the Central Community Thanksgiving Service, over $4,000 was collected for the Central Community Assistance Foundation. Thank you to the Central Area Pastor’s Association for arranging that. Furthermore, Cooking in Central has brought CCAF into its circle, naming the charity as one of the organizations that will be supported through the Cooking event next year. So please continue to show your support for Cooking in Central as well, as the event touches so many aspects of our community. Those Affected by Alzheimer’s

This past Saturday, at the Joor Road Public Library branch, Judy Garwood celebrated the long-awaited release of her new book by giving a reading and sharing her personal reflections. The book, entitled “Mama, I’m here”, is a fictional account based on the real-life experiences Judy faced while caring for her Alzheimer’s afflicted mother. Writing with an easy and graceful style, Judy shares funny moments and poignant moments and heart wrenching moments that will resonate with anyone who finds themselves in a caregiver’s role. It chronicles the supreme efforts of a spouse to “cover” for their loved one and the difficulty and confusion that lie in facing the reality of Alzheimer’s. Judy moved home from Massachusetts to care for her mother and her father, who had himself been diagnosed with dementia. She became keenly aware of the huge drain on resources and energies that is placed on caregivers, and how little resources exist to support them. Her book became not just a tribute to those who had passed on, but a plea on behalf of all who find themselves in such a situation. Donating 10% of the profits from her book to the Alzheimer’s Association is just one way she has found to be an advocate for those who have none. Another is the space for journaling she created in the

back of her book for readers to write their questions and thoughts. Judy began writing the book In January of this year and completed it in July. “It literally just poured out of me,” she says. It began as a poem (which still exists in the book) but blossoming into a full-fledged novel about a woman facing her parents’ disabilities. The main challenge in printing the book was in finding a publisher. “No one wanted to touch it, it was like they were afraid of it because it dealt with Alzheimer’s, “ Judy says. Alzheimer’s does strike fear into the hearts of most, because so many suffer from it now. “It’s an epidemic,” Judy states, “There is not one life that is not touched by it. It is growing at a rate faster than cancer and heart disease.” Finally, Friesen Press took it on and the book was released in October of this year. Judy has teamed up with Barbara Auten of the Alzheimer’s Services of the Capital Area and they are doing book signings together. At the library, many there had questions for both Judy and Barbara. The laughter and tears shared there truly underscored the need for help for this overlooked group. It was obvious that Judy has become not just an author, but a support as well. After attending Judy Garwood’s book reading Saturday, I became aware of a wonderful resource available to caregivers of Alzheimer’s patients. Barbara Auten, herself the child of parents with the disease, is executive director of a respite care center in Baton Rouge called Charlie’s Place. It is a program for those with early stage Alzheimer’s and related disorders, where they can socialize, receive music therapy, armchair exercise, therapeutic cooking and pet therapy. They also can participate in field trips and community service projects. The mission of Charlie’s Place is to “Make a significant difference in the lives of those coping with Alzheimer’s disease in our community.” The support they offer caregivers and the information that they make available are unprecedented in our city. Barbara had several stories of the lives the organization has touched, one detailing how a man brought his totally non-responsive father to Charlie’s Place. After just a few weeks, the father was participating and social. His son came and thanked the folks at Charlie’s Place for giving him back his father. When asked what Charlie’s Place needed most, Barbara responded – “We need ambassadors to GET THE WORD OUT!”

Day Walk for the Cure in Tampa Bay, FL. The event, as it says, is a 3 day event where participants walk 60 miles over 3 days and must raise a minimum of $2,300 each. Robin had tossed around the idea of participating for several years and finally decided that after turning 30 this year, it was time to stop talking and start doing. It took a lot of convincing from Robin, but Denise decided a few months later to participate as well. When they worried “What if I can’t do this?” they encouraged each other and themselves by saying, “…but, what if I can?!” This was an amazing experience for this mother/daughter team that required a lot of hard work and perseverance. They began training in July, when the south Louisiana heat indexes were over 100 degrees, but this did not stop them from setting out for long walks every weekend for over 16 weeks. Each participant is given a suggested training regimen, which they followed as closely as possible, despite summer vacations and normal life activities.

The event in Tampa Bay raised over $4.5 million to be used for breast cancer research, outreach and education programs. The 3 day journey began on the early Friday morning of October 29 where an emotional opening ceremony celebrated the lives of those who have survived breast cancer and remembered those who lost their hard fought battles. Overnight was spent at camp with the other 1,700 walkers and over 300 crew members, amongst endless rows of pink tents, hot meals, entertainment, hot showers in huge tractor/trailers and more port-a-potties than anyone wants to imagine. They decorated their tent with pink ribbons strung together on twine, each naming friends and family members who had been faced with this terrible disease. The route varied daily, bringing the walkers through several towns

much needed support with encouraging words, bathroom access, water, treats and popsicles. This was, at times, the things that kept the two going, when the heat and exhaustion made them want to pack it up and head to a hotel. On the third day after completing the 60 mile journey, Robin and Denise walked across the finish line arm-in-arm with tears in their eyes. No words can describe the sense of pride and accomplishment they felt after participating in what is known as the boldest initiative in working towards a world without breast cancer. They had such a wonderful experience during this 3 Day Walk for the Cure that they have already decided to participate again in 2011. They would like to thank all of their friends and family members who supported them financially, emotionally and mentally throughout this journey. able to require CH2M Hill to accept less than 90% of the permit fees collected. That is, after all, the deal Central agreed to when the City wanted CH2M Hill to provide the services. Mr. DeJohn, who owns a large contracting company, likened the situation to a three year plumbing job that someone might bid for $80 an hour. Using the master plumber on his staff who could handle the job, the contractor would intend to make a $20 per hour profit. Two years into a three year contract for this job, the contractor trains up a young plumber who is completely capable of doing the job, and instead assigns the young plumber to do the job, meeting all requirements of the contract. If the contractor recruits and trains the young plumber and pays him $10 per hour less than he paid the Master Plumber, is he required to pass that savings on to the customer? The answer is no. A deal is a deal. A person purchasing a 50" television for $1,000 in 2008 does not get to bring it back to the store in 2010 and exchange it for the new 60" model which also now sells for $1,000. A deal is a deal. When you sign a three year lease on a house you don't get to lower your rent after two years just because you could rent a bigger house for the same money now. A deal is a deal. If the City of Central engages in the practice of signing agreements then trying to change the rules it is likely that companies will either avoid doing business with Central, or may at least raise their initial bids in preparation for Central not wishing to live with the deal that was signed. Fortunately, Central is in the process of deciding what the new contract for City Services will look like. The argument has been made several times at Council meetings that the best use of the City's time is to focus not on trying to change a deal signed three years ago, but to focus on the deal the City needs to sign less than six months from now. The Central High School Olympic weightlifting team racked up on medals in the Annual Gayle Hatch Christmas Meet. 1st Place winners were Van Gurenio- 51kg class, Cooper Moore- 85kg class, Dereck Blough- 69kg class, and Jacob Jones- 94kg class. 2nd place winners were Brett Dotson47kg class, Ashton Stokes- 85kg class, Matthew Phil- 62kg class, Zach Evans- 77kg class, and Brandon Lee- 105+ class. 3rd place winners were Devon Sampson- 47kg class, Landon Sutton- 62kg class, Cole Leblanc85kg class, Hunter Cazes- 69 kg classs, Blake Welborn- 85kg class, and Logan Metcalf- 77kg class. The Central Private varsity basketball team lengthened their winning streak last week with a 93-58 win over the Oak Forest Academy Yellowjackets. High scorers for the Rebels were Tim Fletcher and Jake Flaggert, scoring 27 apiece, with Flaggert landing seven 3-pointers for CP. Just the night before, when the Rebs played Centerville, Central Private's Simpson Anderson made an impressive nine 3-pointers in the 102-39 victory for the Rebels. Congratulations to the varsity boys and the rest of the Rebel basketball players, who continue to improve and grow as the season progresses. You can catch more CPS basketball in the new year when the Rebels play Silliman on January 4th (4:00 PM at Silliman) and ASC on January 6th (4:00 PM at home). Public Comment: Just the Facts (continued from page 1)

tained some very misleading and incorrect information regarding public comment at council meetings. This plan is not “the mayor’s plan”, but instead is a plan adopted by a previous city council and included in the city’s code of ordinances. I would like to clarify this matter and give background information as to how this procedure was enacted. Prior to writing this press release, both Mayor Watts and council member Wayne Messina were consulted to verify information. At the October 12, 2010 council meeting, council member Wayne Messina introduced an ordinance titled, “An ordinance to limit the time for comments by council members during a council meeting.” A copy of that ordinance is attached to this memo. This ordinance was proposed by council member Messina due to a nearly 4-hour council meeting that occurred previously in which citizens expressed frustration afterwards about the amount of time that it took to discuss an item by each council member. Council member Messina’s ordinance would limit the amount of time that council members could speak uninterrupted to five minutes with an additional five minutes for rebuttal on any given item in order to move the council meetings along in a timely manner. Additionally, no council member would speak unless recognized by the presiding official, which would be the mayor or, in his absence, the mayor protem. At the October 26, 2010 council meeting, a public hearing was to be heard on this ordinance. However, prior to discussion, Council member Messina asked that discussion of this item be withdrawn due to the fact that he discovered there was already a city ordinance outlining these same procedures for comments. City attorney Sheri Morris concurred with council member Messina that there were

already procedures in place under Title 1, Chapter 1, Part 1 (Rules of Procedure) of the city’s code of ordinances. This section, established by a previous city council, states the following: Sec. 1:7. Conducting of meetings; public hearings. (a) In view of the many items appearing on the agenda, each councilman will be allowed a maximum of five (5) minutes to express his views on any one subject without interruption from the other members upon initial consideration and five (5) minutes for rebuttal. No member will speak until recognized by the chair. In compliance with R.S. 42:5(d), members of the public will be allowed to speak on any item included on the agenda. Members of the public who wish to speak, must request permission in writing to do so prior to discussion of the matter on which they wish to speak. The chairman will allocate time to all members of the public who wish to comment. (b) Any question to be directed from a member of the council to any other person present must be directed through the chair. (c) The city clerk is to be sergeantat-arms and shall keep time and advise the chairman as to the time on all speakers. In order to continue beyond the allowed maximum, persons speaking must secure unanimous consent of the council. (d) A ruling of the chairman ‘that an item on the agenda was not properly placed on the agenda shall be sustained unless overruled by the vote of two-thirds of the members then present. All other rulings of the chairman from which appeals are taken shall be sustained unless overturned by a majority of those members present. After this section was discussed, council member Messina stated that there was no need for his proposed ordinance since Title 1, Chapter 1, Part 1, Section 1:7 addressed his

concerns and established procedures for public comment for both council members and the general public. The ordinance was then withdrawn, and it was requested by members of the council that the procedures of this section be followed for future council meetings. On Tuesday, December 16, 2010, Mayor Watts announced that these procedures will be followed for future council meetings. So, therefore, it is not “the mayor’s plan”. It is set of procedures that were previously adopted by council action in the city’s ordinances on November 22, 2005. In a telephone conference last Thursday, council member Messina pointed out that the State Legislature uses a similar procedure at its committee hearings, and this procedure seems to work well. Citizens wishing to speak on an item must fill out a card prior to the meeting requesting to speak on a particular item. Only those who filled out cards requesting to speak are allowed to speak on an item at the committee hearings of the legislature. The Central Community School System is considering a similar procedure for its meetings as well. The city’s ordinance is generally consistent with the state legislature’s procedures and the proposed procedures of the Central Community School System. The statement in the Central City News article which reads, “The Mayor should reconsider his statement, and the council should make sure this idea doesn’t take hold” is misleading. A previous council established these rules by ordinance on November 22, 2005, and members of the current council requested that this law be enforced (and take hold) in order to provide for timely council meetings while still

allowing the public the right to be heard. By copy of this letter, a request is hereby made for the Central City News to issue a clarification and apology to Mayor Watts for running an editorial with a misleading headline and not presenting all the facts that were discussed openly during a public council meeting on October 26, 2010. Please Keep an Eye on Your Pets

During the cooler months, it is often perfect dog walking weather. While you are out walking your pet around your neighborhood, please be aware of your neighbors. The East Baton Rouge Parish Animal Control has laws in place concerning animal supervision and control, so remember to follow them on your daily outings with your dog. Dogs are required to be kept on a leash any time they are outside of your fenced yard. Dogs also must wear collars and registration tags at all times. Then there is the issue many of us forget sometimes: you may not allow your dog to “use the restroom” on a neighbor’s property. We all want to be kind to our neighbors and to respect their property. So please do not let your dog make a mess on your neighbor’s lawn. If it is unavoidable (which sometimes is the case), please pick up after your dog and dispose of it properly. There are fines put in place by the parish for those who do not follow these rules, but that will not be an issue if we remain aware and respectful of our neighbors.


George’s Journey

To meet Robin Waites is an experience. Instead of one who has every right to be depressed by the world’s standards, you are faced with someone who exudes joy and the calm, no blessed, assurance of one with deep faith. But I see I’m starting at the wrong end. Robin, a Central resident, has authored (though she may say “edited”) a book based on the journaling of her husband, George. George discovered in 2006 that he had pancreatic cancer. Throughout his battle with the disease, he shared his thoughts and prayers on a blog site. It is these musings that Robin has collected in a book: “George’s Journey, the writings of a man facing his own mortality with faith, hope and love“, a bare faced, honest walk through the valley of the shadow of death where page after page demonstrates how the Lord never left their side. George shares his delight in a litter of baby rabbits and the melons growing in his garden, his steadfast belief that God is there for him and meeting all his needs, his revelations on scripture, in particular Psalm 91, and the everyday occurrences of a busy, full life that had no room for self pity. Married for 16 years, Robin met George through a series of events that she describes as God’s perfect plan. Declining to go on a church retreat with a friend, Robin went on a family vacation instead. Rather than their usual mountain vacation, Robin and her parents went to the beach, the same beach, it turns out, that the retreat was being held at. It was there she met George, and the rest is history. She and George had 2 children, who were in middle school and high school when their father’s illness was diagnosed. The book picks up with them facing George’s surgery at M.D. Anderson. It is typical of him that as soon as he had recovered from the surgery, he borrowed a tractor and created a garden in their backyard. Deciding

that cancer would not run their lives, George and Robin continued with the business of living – ball games, careers, raising children. George’s writings become a true “working out” of his faith – how this fits in God’s plan, how God can use it to His glory. It is an amazing encouragement to anyone going through any trial in their lives. The wisdom gleaned through suffering and joy is a treasure, “In suffering and tragedy is when character, faith and hope are established in our lives,” Robin says, “We received a supernatural grace and comfort. You don’t know it’s true until you have to fall on it and it catches you.” Robin felt God leading her to share their story when she saw how many lives George had touched. “Last Lectures” had just been released, but she felt that that book focused on living THIS life well. Robin wanted to write about living this life while realizing that we are here to prepare for the next. “This life is temporary,” she shares, “It’s not what it’s all about. You realize this when you have someone on the

Lady Katz 97 14U fastpitch softball team of Central is looking for a few more players to complete our roster for the upcoming spring/summer season. The reality of the next life is appealing – it’s a door we get to walk through.” She realized that the process was “bigger than just cancer and dying. There was a message to be given and lives to be touched.” Robin tried for months to write the book – not knowing how to begin or what format it should be in. Then in March of 2009 she sat down and wrote it in 3 months straight, sitting on a couch at Central Perk. “God’s timing was right,” she says, “It was the easiest thing I’d ever done.” The publisher and cover then fell into place in a miraculous way, and the book was released in the fall of this year. Robin has spent her time since then substitute teaching at Central High School and giving television and radio interviews and a book talk at the Central High library. Though there are several copies of the book at the library, there is a waiting list to check it out. The book can be purchased at Central Perk. It is truly a Godsend for anyone going through difficult times and needing to know that God is faithful, our “refuge and our fortress.”

5K Rebel Run January 8th

Central Private Parents’ Club is pleased to announce the first Annual 5K Rebel Run to be held Saturday, January 8, 2011. Runners and walkers will participate in a 5K along a designated route starting and ending at Central Private School. The 5k begins at 8:00 a.m. Registration is now underway for the Rebel Run. The entry fee of $25 includes a free tshirt, though t-shirts are not guaranteed after December 17th. Registration packets will be available from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Friday (1/7/11) or the morning of the race. Check-in begins the morning of the race at 7:00 a.m. Make plans to participate in the first organized 5K run in the Central Community. There will be food, entertainment, and prizes.
