Inaugural cultural tour to China Excitement is mounting among our first tour group of 18 students and 2 staff who will attend the 2012 International Student Summer Camp in Beijing run over 10 days in July.

The camp is organised by the Beijing Municipal Education Commission (BMEC) with the aim of boosting international understanding through education, expanding communication among Chinese and overseas students, and promoting mutual respect and tolerance for cultural diversity. In 2011, 1200 middle school students from 23 countries attended the camp. Originally 10 places were offered to students in Years 9-10. Due to the positive response from parents and a high demand for places, the number was increased to18. The greater majority of the students attending the camp have never visited China and all are excited to have the opportunity to mingle with students

This tour to China is an excellent addition to the range of opportunities which exist for our students to gain global perspective through participation in our Student Exchange program and cultural, humanitarian, music and sporting tours.

From the School Board Science extension completed The $3M upgrade of the Science Block which began in 2011 has now been completed. The broad range of physical, technological and environmental features which this new facility provides allows greater interactivity for group and individual learning within the classroom setting.

The refurbishment of the existing Science block and new extension was constructed by local builder, North Construction. In line with our school’s environmental credentials, the Science building development has been designed to achieve a 4 star Green Star Education Design rating from the Green Building Council of Australia, representing ‘best practice’ in environmental design.

This upgrade is part of our 30 year master plan for the continuous development of inspirational learning spaces that motivate students and staff alike. In the past 3 years we have built an all-weather multipurpose sports field, a new library and lecture theatre, and created additional sports ovals.

The School Board has approved construction of a new state-of-the- art Performing Arts Centre on the site of the current facilities. The Performing Arts Centre will include a 750 seat tiered theatre with drama and music teaching/rehearsing/recording/tuition facilities. It will be a multi-purpose learning

space for the whole school, large enough to accommodate the entire senior or junior schools, with a large lobby, foyer and kitchen for school events and functions. This facility will not only provide outstanding opportunities for our students but will enhance our school’s reputation for premier educational facilities. The School Board has been considering this project for some years. Architects were appointed last year to create plans for a development application for Gosford Council. Earlier this year a fundraising consultant was engaged to measure the support of our school community for this project. The consultant’s report indicated strong support for a new Performing Arts Centre and the associated capital fundraising campaign. The Development Application goes before Gosford Council in July.

School Board appointments Stephen Brahams Stephen is a CCGS parent and a Director of a number of internationally based companies. He has over 30 years experience working with his own companies in the commercial property development and investment markets. Stephen is a member of the Board of the Central Coast Regional Development Corporation and is currently chairman of the Project Control Group for the development known as The Landing in Gosford. He is also a Director (non exec) of Pacific Link Housing, a community housing provider based on the Central Coast.

Rosemary Johnston Professor Rosemary Johnston has been involved in the teaching and learning faculty at the University of Technology, Sydney since 2004. She is Head of Education at UTS and Founding Director of the Australian Centre for Child and Youth: Culture and Wellbeing - an innovative interdisciplinary 21st century centre that integrates technology, research, teaching and practice in all fields pertaining to the culture and wellbeing of children and youth. Rosemary is currently setting up and leading the Centre’s interdisciplinary project, Literate Australia, which is an umbrella for a number of cell projects that have specific outcomes relating to the education, culture and wellbeing of children and youth.

John Dyer John is a retired senior human resources executive. He was General Manager HR for CSR Ltd for over seven years until he retired in 2006 and was Senior Vice President HR for Burns Philp & Co Ltd for the prior 11 years. John has also had experience in management education and development with ASX top 100 companies and has recently consulted to the University of Sydney which included interim management of its HR function. He graduated from the UNSW majoring in psychology and completed Post Graduate Studies at the University of Sydney in labour relations and labour law. He also holds a teaching diploma.

In Memoriam Peter Reynolds

(2.1.1948–30.4.2012)

Peter was one of our foundation parents in 1985. He was a member of the Board of CCGS from 1989-1996 and served as Treasurer and Secretary for a period of time. During his time on the Board, he played a major role in the acquisition of the Erina Heights Hotel Motel which was developed into the Performing Arts Centre which opened in 1996. Peter was well known throughout the Central Coast for his exceptional achievements in swimming which included winning Bronze for Australia at the Tokyo Olympics in 1964 and 4 gold medals in the 1966 Commonwealth Games in Jamaica. Since 2006 Peter was Chairman of Central Coast Leagues Club. Peter will be remembered for his outstanding service to our school and the Central Coast community.

Science facility takes a quantum leap With the completion of the Science facilities students studying Science at Central Coast Grammar School will benefit from a dynamic new learning environment. The original 5 laboratories, built in the 1980s, have been completely gutted and refitted to provide a vibrant and fresh look. The new extension provides an additional 2 laboratories, and a dry laboratory/tutorial room. The laboratories include features that are energy efficient and environmentally sustainable. Large picture windows which open up the rooms and provide natural light have been included in most laboratories. New fume cupboards were installed in 4 of the laboratories. The internal walls are covered in pinboard material on which posters and student work can be displayed. All the laboratories include wireless access and interactive smart boards. During the planning phase, research on how colour affects learning informed the choice of colour schemes. Glass splashbacks around the work benches allow students to record their results as their experiments are progressing or can be used by the teacher to direct the focus of students to other areas of the learning space. The flexible seating can be configured to suit the needs of the students and the teacher.

Science staff have settled in well to the reconfigured area which includes workstations for teachers and laboratory technicians and an expanded prep area as well as a dedicated space where departmental meetings can be held comfortably.  The internal corridors have been transformed into impressive display areas where scientific models and apparatus are now on display rather than being housed, out of sight, in a storeroom.  Classes began in February in the refurbished facility and the completion of the extension was eagerly awaited. The opening of the new laboratories has lifted the focus on scientific endeavors across all age groups. The positive feedback from students and staff to their new environment has been overwhelming. The additional facilities have enabled us to assign a laboratory to each Science teacher. There are many benefits to this arrangement. Effectively every Science class will have a home laboratory where student work can be displayed. Additionally, experiments that have not been completed can be left set up rather than being dismantled and reassembled in a different laboratory for the next lesson. Years 11 and 12 students studying Science can now

Plant physiologist introduces the Gac

The inaugural International Fascination of Plants Day on Friday 18 May coincided with a visit to Year 5 by research horticulturist, Dr Sophie Parks. What an apt day to have a plant physiologist at school especially as Dr Parkes was introducing students to the very interesting Gac fruit. This fruit grows in Southeast Asia and China. However, the Gac Dr Parks brought to school for her talk was grown at the Gosford Horticultural Institute and forms part of her research into the cultivation of these super-fruits outside Asia.

Year 5 teacher, Tracey Gray who organised the visit said, “Dr Parkes was assigned to our year group as part of the Science in Schools program. The students learned about the Gac’s nutritional values, edible parts and propagation. They were intrigued by the fruit’s pointy spikes, vivid colours and multilayered seed pods. Most of all they wanted to taste the sticky red oil and seeds. This resulted in mixed comments ranging from bubblegum to sago – not at all what they had expected! We are hoping to visit Dr Parkes at the Institute later this year to see the plants on the vine.”

As teachers, our professional focus is on the education, growth and performance of the young people we teach. To ensure we maintain the very highest standards of teaching and learning in our classrooms we engage in continual learning, experiences and critical reflection that develop our professional practice: we ensure we are the life-long learners we wish our students to become. At CCGS we pursue outstanding student outcomes through a strong commitment to the ongoing development of our teachers.

Professional Development Ongoing professional development ensures that teachers regularly reflect on their practice and engage in purposeful activities to build and extend their skills. At CCGS we understand that we can continue to develop our classroom practice through professional learning, experience and reflection. We offer a wide range of targeted professional learning opportunities at school and teachers are encouraged to identify and undertake courses through recognised external providers and share their new learning with their colleagues.

To support this, CCGS gained endorsement as a provider of registered professional development from the NSW Institute of Teachers in December 2010, ensuring that all of our staff are regularly involved in carefully structured learning opportunities that address the needs of our students and our school.

Accreditation At CCGS, all teaching staff are encouraged to engage with the professional teaching standards and use them to reflect on their professional practice.  Staff are encouraged to apply for accreditation at levels that reflect their experience. Accreditation provides teachers with a structure for professional reflection and helps them identify areas of strength and areas in which they can continue to develop their skills and understanding.  Accreditation also provides a mechanism through which teachers can be formally acknowledged for the excellent work that is undertaken every day in classrooms across our school.  Most importantly, accreditation ensures we maintain a constant focus on the

quality of the teaching and learning in our classrooms and on the powerful way this affects student outcomes.

Teacher Appraisal In 2012 we have implemented a new process for annual teacher appraisal that reflects our determination to pursue academic excellence through high quality teaching. This will enable us to recognise the strong work done day-by-day in our classrooms and respond to the changing national landscape of education in Australia. Teachers reflect on ten Areas of Performance appropriate to our school context which are linked to the Professional Teaching Standards. The teacher appraisal process provides a structure for self-reflection, feedback and professional dialogue between colleagues. It focuses on both celebrating our achievements and continually improving the already strong performance that is demonstrated every day by our teachers.  In this way, our teachers actively maintain a continual focus on improving teaching and learning at CCGS. New Director of Teaching and Learning Damon Cooper has been appointed as the Director of Teaching and Learning to support the professional development, accreditation and appraisal of our teaching staff. He has a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) and a Master of Teaching from the University of Sydney, and has continued to undertake postgraduate professional learning through the University of Sydney and the Harvard Graduate School of Education. He has published articles on a range

of educational topics including English teaching, the use of empathy exercises in supporting learning and text analysis in the HSC Japanese Extension course. He has presented papers at local and international educational and academic conferences, and works with the Board of Studies setting and marking HSC examinations. Damon has hands-on experience of accreditation and the Professional Teaching Standards.

Moral dilemmas explored In May, eminent philosopher, theologian and author Dr Peter Vardy presented an engaging day conference titled ‘A Moral Maze’ to senior students studying Elective Philosophy and Studies of Religion 1. Also attending were gifted and talented students across many age groups. Dr Vardy hopes to inspire this generation to bring depth and understanding to the challenges of life. The conference dealt with moral dilemmas associated with medical ethics, human rights, equality and justice. Head of Learning Support, Jenny Fleetwood commented, “Dr Vardy places provocative contemporary issues in the context of thousands of years of history and philosophy. He invited the students to interrogate the assumptions which underpin their knowledge.

Dr Vardy presented ideas in segments, providing short breaks to allow students to digest the information and discuss ideas with their immediate group. Feedback from teachers indicated that many issues raised at the conference have led to ongoing stimulating

classroom debates. In addition, the feedback from our younger students who had their first taste of a university-style conference was very positive.”

Poetry wins national competition Year 9 student Jessica Balthazaar won 1st prize from 5100 entries in the Australia-wide Write 4 Fun competition. English teacher Natalie ParsonsClair said, “As a teacher I think it’s important to provide opportunities to allow students to follow their passion and build their skills in an area they love. That’s why I suggested my Year 9 Extension English students enter the Write 4 Fun competition. Jessica is a very talented and dedicated English student who took up the challenge and created an awe inspiring poem. I’m very proud of her, as is the whole school community.”

The Performance By Jessica Balthazaar Dark clouds saunter across the sky, slowly taking over the expanse of blue. They begin to grumble and mutter in irritation. The rain tiptoes up behind you, whispering softly – it takes to the stage, Tap-dancing on the roof, while the clouds play marbles in the sky, And lightning bolts race to reach the ground. The trees rustle their leaves in time, And the wind howls an eerie melody. The performance ends without your noticing, Not needing to be seen. Inside, the flames dance and the fireplace gives its crackly applause. The trees fall asleep, worn out from the excitement. The clouds take a leisurely stroll out of sight, The only traces of the symphony that ended so abruptly are the puddles of water: Perfectly invisible until the odd droplet flees from the gutter, and startles the pool. All you were aware of was the crashing of the marbles, Now even the thunderclaps have fallen asleep.

Look at what we get up to in

K i n d e r g a r te n !

On Day 1, our Kindergarten students leave one nest and enter a brand new environment where learning, laughter and making friends form part of the child-centered, holistic world of discovery at CCGS. The journey begins with the fundamentals learned through purposeful play designed to excite young minds and promote achievement. Learning to write and to recognise numbers, letters and patterns are essential skills. Working with groups, making friends and feeling happy and confident at school is equally important for children. During Term 1 Kindergarten were introduced to the ‘You Can Do It’ program which helps them to become confident academically and socially, to learn persistence, organisation, getting along with others and resilience. Kindergarten experienced specialist lessons in French, Creative Art, Library, PDHPE and Music. They took part in swimming and

cross-country carnivals where the smiles were endless as new levels of personal bests were achieved, with older students on hand to help them to the finish. There was fun galore at the Infants Camp and the Easter hat parade and egg hunt. There were classroom visits from Clifford, the big red dog and our sister school in Japan. To bring the term to an end and introduce Kindergarten to the rest of the school, House Family groups collected the Kindy children from their classrooms and walked them hand-in-hand to Assembly. This year our Kindergarten parents had the opportunity to share the adventure of their child’s first term at school. Each parent received a video of their child’s class activities, taken by their teachers. Parents have loved watching their child’s progress. One parent commented, “Our children grow up so quickly that you soon forget how little they were and what their first days of ‘big school’ were like.”

Senior debaters win Rotary trophy Rotary Wyong/Tuggerah described the 2012 inter-school debating competition as “the best season we have every enjoyed,” with over 40 people attending the grand final debate to hear CCGS take on Wadalba Community School.

Pat Murray, the face behind the voice known to countless school children as ‘Mr Excellent’, visited CCGS in June to speak to Junior School teachers about the Maths Online service. When senior students found out that he was coming to the school, they asked if he could visit their class. They knew exactly what he sounded like – as they have been encouraged by his clear explanations and worked examples of tricky Maths problems over many years – but what would he look like? Students were delighted to meet ‘the voice’. They treated Pat like a celebrity, asking him to sign their maths books and calculators. Of course the one word they wanted to hear him say was ‘excellent’, which he did several times during his introduction and they absolutely loved it! Head of Mathematics Jill Robinson said, “Maths Online is a great tool for students to become independent learners. They can review lesson content out of class when doing their homework or if something isn’t clear. The service can also help parents learn concepts alongside their child. We have purchased a Maths Online site licence and are planning to use it as part of our K-12 Mathematics program.”

Creative food ideas for business and pleasure Year 9 Commerce entrepreneurs were out to make a profit from their food stalls, creating eye-catching posters to advertise their products. The winter chill helped, with long lines of students eager to buy hot dogs, nachos and wraps. There were plenty of takers too for milkshakes, cakes, sweets and trifles. It was party time for 16 children from Erina Baptist Pre-School who turned up for fun and food to the Year 9 Food Technology birthday party themes event. As well as creating visually appealing table displays, the students prepared an enticing array of party food and themed cakes. Year 9 also had a fun time dressing up and organising games for their little visitors.

Library celebrates the

National Year of Reading The National Year of Reading 2012 is about children learning to read, continuing to read and finding new sources of inspiration. It is about helping people discover and rediscover the magic of books and most of all it is about Australians becoming a nation of readers. The Library at CCGS is proud to be part of the National Year of Reading and is celebrating in many ways this year. We have already held a Scholastic Book Fair, complete with a visit from book personality Clifford the Dog. We held Horrible Histories Week where famous characters from History were seen working in the Library and students could enter our ‘Guess the Guest’ competition. The Star Wars birthday on May the Fourth [be with you] was celebrated with visits from Darth Vader, Princess Leah, Yoda and more! We have never seen so many History and Star Wars books being borrowed from the Library, clutched under the arms of excited students. At 11am on Wednesday 23 May, there was great excitement when all the Kindergarten classes gathered in the reading pit in the Library to take part in National Simultaneous Storytelling Day and hear the tale of ‘The Very Angry Bear’. Our major reading incentive programs – Accelerated Reader and the Premier’s Reading Challenge are well under way and we are looking forward to best-ever results from our students, with so much enthusiasm for reading this year. We have used Accelerated Reader for 12 years now and as one of the first

schools in Australia to take on the program we are now ambassadors of this highly successful and widely used reading motivation program. David Linke from Accelerated Reader writes: “To celebrate the 2012 National Year of Reading I decided to print a set of posters which depict students engaged in reading.  My idea was to showcase the concept that students of varying ages and genders all read.  But that reading in 2012 was not simply traditional books.  So there are images of students reading ipads and magazines, fiction and non-fiction. A huge thank you to the Library team at CCGS for their support in helping us with the photo shoot.” This year we participated in Copyright sampling surveys in regard to photocopying of published materials and recording from television by staff for educational purposes. The Library staff coordinated the surveys and the data recorded allows copyright owners to receive their entitlements from the Licensing agencies. Gill Martin Head of Library

ISA Awards

for sporting excellence

SPORTS ROUNDUP At the ISA Awards night: Robert Dredge, Kate Cranney and Keelan Bridge

The summer season produced some strong results across a range for sports. Six Basketball teams played in highly competitive finals matches. The Girls Intermediate, Junior A and Junior B finished victors as did our Boys 15 and Boys 13 Gold Development team. Unfortunately the Boys 17s were narrowly defeated in the final seconds by St Augustine’s College 22-21 in what was a tense and thrilling game. In Prep Basketball, of the19 teams we fielded 14 reached the semi final. Five teams played in grand final matches and 4 teams won their respective age division. In the ISA Swimming Champions, our girls finished 2nd overall while the boys finished 7th. Our juniors finished 2nd by a narrow margin of 24 points at the HICES Swimming Carnival, despite three 1st place wins by our relay teams. Our athletes put in a terrific effort at the ISA Cross Country Carnival with the girls winning the overall champion school trophy for CCGS, while the boys placed 2nd to St Patrick’s College. There were many outstanding individual performances with CCGS placing 1st in 4, and 2nd in 5 age groups. Another CCGS stamp will be recorded on the junior HICES Cross Country trophy with our junior runners winning the event for the 8th consecutive year.

Three CCGS students were among the recipients to receive awards for sporting performance in 2001 at a special event held at St Andrew’s Cathedral School in Sydney to mark the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Independent Sporting Association. Current Year 12 students, Robert Dredge and Keelan Bridge both of whom competed with great success at national level in 2011, received Blues awards for Athletics and Swimming respectively.

Although we fell short by 7 runs, the team were jubilant to have played a grand final and keen to build on the experience for next season. Winning a grand final game is always a good feeling and a rich reward for commitment and team effort. Even more important though is how we, as a school, build our character and profile in sport evidenced by how our players interact in competitive environments. What’s gratifying to witness is the level of good sportsmanship which our students display, win or lose.

Kate Cranney Year 12 2011 and CCGS female Sportsperson of the Year, received a Sporting Merit award and a Blues award for her exceptional performance in representative Basketball. Kate was presented with her prize by the guest speaker, Olympic gold medallist speed skater Stephen Bradbury.

Kerry Armstrong-Smith, Mathematics teacher and mum to Jemma (Yr 7) and Bronte (Yr 5), has been a member of Umina Surf Lifesaving Club since the age of 4 and has been doing patrols for the past 29 years. Kerry competed at the Australian Masters Surf Life Saving Titles at Kurrawa, QLD taking gold for 1st Champion Lifesaver and 2nd Ski Race. Kerry said, “I think it is good to be involved in serving the community, by doing patrols and training the nippers. I really enjoy exercising, and by training and competing in the surf, the conditions are often changing and different so there are frequently new challenges to deal with from one training session or competition to the next. I think you make the time and continue to do things if they are fun.” Kerry is married to past student Marty (1990). Head of Middle School, Steven Bennett says he likes setting personal goals and doing his hardest to push on even when the going gets tough. Steven recently competed in one of Australia’s most challenging mountain bike endurance races, Convict 100, which follows the historic trails through the Dharug and Yengo National Parks. In a field of over 1000 riders, Steven admits it was a hard but exhilarating race. He placed 3rd in his

category in a time of 4:51:10. Steven said, “My time was pleasing and a PB for me. It was good to finish in under 5 hours.” Acting Head of Computing, Sharon Byrnes described her completion of a 100km run (as against a 100 mile run), from Teralba to Patonga Beach, as taking the soft option! Sharon finished 1st in her age group and 5th outright in 15hrs, 13mins. Out of 47 starters, only 30 finished the challenging course which follows the Great North Walk. Sharon said, “It is not really a race between runners. It is an inner race and battle with oneself. I was the 2nd lady to finish. I broke the standing ladies record by 2 minutes; however, the lady in front of me beat it by more! I’m delighted to have my age group record though.” Head of Sport, Paul Geddes has been coaching 1st XV Rugby in schools since 1993. His commitment to professional development saw him progress from the ISA to NSW Rugby Union 1st Manager and selector to managing Australia A schools for 3 years before becoming Australian Schools Assistant Manager in 2011. In 2012, Paul was appointed Manager of Australian Schools Rugby Team 2012-2013. Paul said, “The opportunity to manage the Australian Schools Rugby Team is an exciting challenge and a wonderful honour for me personally. I look forward to working closely with the next generation of Wallabies.”

Athletes make national squad Charlie Hunter (Y10) and Georgia Wassall (Y11) were selected in the 2012 Athletics Australia Under 17 Development Squad. The squad of 31 boys and 43 girls are considered prospects for future selection to the IAAF World Youth and World Junior Championships and the National Under 19 Talent Squad. Charlie and Georgia attended a 3-day camp at the Australian Institute of Sport in April to learn from national coaches and train with some of the best junior athletes in Australia.

Involvement - it’s what you make it

There are many ways in which parents can be part of their child’s educational journey. Parents can join the Parents as Partners program, help out on sports days, at camps, or at the Spring Fair. The Parent Reps organise opportunities for parents to socialise with others in their child’s year group. There are cycle, fishing and golf days, beach parties, coffee mornings, lunches and dinners and, especially for dads, the popular Breakfast and Camp events. Parent Tony Doukakis tells of his family’s involvement with the school and the strong bonds of friendship forged over 22 years that still exist today.

K-2 students experienced the wonderful community spirit which exists at CCGS on parent and carers participation day when mums, dads and grandparents turned up in droves to lend their time and talent to this year’s Infants Camp.

“Both Dianne and I believed that in order to enjoy everything the school could offer we needed to be involved. I don’t think we have missed any of the school productions, concerts or speech nights during our 22 year association with CCGS. We enjoyed being there to support our children. It was important for us to engage with all the school community groups. Relationships created as a result have stayed with us and many of our best friends have been fellow parents. Early in our time at the school a group of fathers got together to form the 5Cs club (Central Coast Camping and Canoe Club) in order to take their children on camping trips. Inevitably the children and their parents moved on from camping together, but the fathers became great friends and we still meet for dinner once a month.”

Doctors, prospectors and craft makers provided a variety of activities so children could learn something new or simply just have fun!

Families and young people, regardless of socio economic status and family structure, can be affected by drugs and alcohol. To build awareness around these issues, we invited Paul Dillon from Drug & Alcohol Research & Training Australia to speak to parents, Senior College students and teaching staff. Paul, a well respected expert, presented factual and thought provoking seminars on topics related to ‘young people and risk taking’, ‘drug use and mental health’ and ‘alcohol, drugs and the law’. Many teachers and parents 16

commented on how useful they found his input. Parents who attended expressed the importance of understanding these issues and suggested summary points in the newsletter might help to spread awareness. Paul reminded parents that “it’s OK to say ‘No’ to your underage child even when they make you feel like you are the only parent who says ‘No’. The truth is the more parents who say ‘No’ the easier it becomes for all parents who are concerned about the wellbeing of their child.”

A night in Paris

Cambodia-Thailand Humanitarian Tour After a hectic few months of fundraising, 30 students and 6 staff will head off on the annual Cambodia-Thailand Humanitarian/Adventure Tour which has become an important part of the fabric of our school. The group organised raffles and lunchtime BBQs to raise funds to help support the Tabitha Foundation Cambodian House Building Project.

In March, their major fundraising event, A Night in Paris, drew 180 members of the school community to an evening of entertainment by jazz singer Maddie Swan (2009) accompanied on piano by her dad, Andrew, wine tasting, excellent food and a French-inspired dance show. Thanks to the generosity of the community the event generated sufficient funds to build 3 houses for families in Cambodia.

A blaze of red to aid the Salvos Senior students were invited to participate in Red Threads Day in May to raise money for the Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal. Students had to wear their dress uniform to school and could then they could change into ‘Red Threads’ for the remainder of the day. Gold coins were collected from students and staff who wore red. Year 11 students organised the event.

Infants fundraiser for Children’s Hospital In May, the Little Kickers visited the school with their mascot Lenny the Lion Cub to raise money for the Children’s Hospital in the lead up to their annual Gold Week. Infants participated in a half hour soccer skills session run by the Little Kickers staff and brought in a gold coin donation raising $277 for the Children’s Hospital while having lots of fun!

Striving for Excellence - why bother? David Barrow 2003 Extract from his address to the community on Speech Night 2011 “Those of you gathered here today are the best of the school. The brightest and most talented of the student body at a school populated by children lucky enough to be born into families in the top 1% of the top 1% of the world’s richest. So I prepared this speech knowing that you will inherit the world and if you dare follow the beginning of the school motto, striving for excellence in all endeavours, you will no doubt succeed on this planet. And almost everyone in the world will be poorer and less free than you. And thus on you tonight I will place a responsibility to lead with your brain, your heart and your spirit… Striving for excellence in all endeavours. ‘Striving’ sounds awfully like strain doesn’t it? and ‘excellence’ seems a fair bit sweatier that ‘just good’ or ‘getting along well’, or ‘managing just fine thanks’. ‘Excellence’ breathes of hard won success and striving carries the faintest sneaking nuance that you may indeed never be excellent. So in response to striving for excellence in all endeavours, one really has to ask - why should one bother?

I was stoked to come and speak at speech night because through school I was so used to coming second. Until Year 9 I came second, third or fourth in a lot of classes and I spent a good number of years sitting in the choir watching my friends and classmates get up on stage while I wallowed in pubescent emo angst. Coming second though was one of the best things for me. Each time it occurred I was driven harder…

At UTS Student Association first and then later as president of the National Union of Students my awareness of my own privileged background was the start of my activism, which was about fighting for equality in education. Having been born into the richest, safest most beautiful place in the world, it behoves us to strive for excellence in all endeavours since you owe the world and it’s poor and powerless, your very best gifts and talents.

The lesson I learnt about not coming first was that perseverance and a certain ordinary

Nicole Bailey 1988 Following a career in marketing and category management with Revlon, L’Oreal, GlaxoSmithKline, Nestle and Johnson & Johnson, Nicole has decided to pursue a career in teaching. She is currently studying at University of Technology, Sydney. Nicole returned to CCGS in Term 2 this year to complete her Teaching Practicum and is pictured with her mentor Paul Daly, Head of Economics.

PAST STUDENTS Katie Stokes 1998 Katie Stokes married Dane Lidgard on 15 October 2011. Katie writes, “Our wedding was held at Bells at Killcare. My siblings (Jenny, Jon and James) were my bridesmaid and bridesmen (that is what the boys nicknamed their title)! Past students who attended were: my siblings, Meredith MacDonald (nee Glenn), Bruce MacDonald, Nikki Crowley (nee Spence), Rebecca Munro (nee Ritchie), Fiona Norrie, Amy Scorer and Nicola Rosenberg (nee Deall). Despite growing up living only 20 minutes from each other, Dane and I first met in California, USA, where we were both working at Mammoth Mountain ski resort at the age of 21. We met again in Sydney a few years later and started dating. We lived in Chamonix, France, for six months in 2007, and when we returned four years later for a ski holiday, Dane proposed. I now live in Sydney and work as Subeditor of Australian Gourmet Traveller magazine. Cathy Fleetwood 2005 David Deall 2004 Cathy Fleetwood married high school sweetheart David Deall on Heron Island on 11 December 2011. Past and current CCGS guests were: Annie and Simon Deall (2001), Nicola Deall (1998), Andrew Brand (2004), Kris Diebert (2004), Brett Elliss (2004), Alison Henry (Sewickley Exchange Student 1997) and Maddi and Jon Fleetwood (current students). Cathy says, “Our relationship started as any highschool romance at school typically does; lunch time catch ups at the lockers and on the odd occassion a chance meeting after school! After we’d both finished school we moved to Sydney together for uni. During a trip to Europe in 2010, 7 years after we met, Dave proposed. We decided to get married on Heron Island as this was the destination of our first holiday together and we’d always wanted to go back. The wedding provided us with the perfect excuse and we couldn’t think of a more suitable location to tie the knot.”
