Central Alabama PRIDEfest 2013

Welcome to the 8 Days of Pride On behalf of the Central Alabama Pride, Inc Board of Directors, I welcome you to the 35th annual Pride celebration for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender communities of Central Alabama and surrounding areas. Our theme this year is “Committed To Love” 35 Years and we hope we have scheduled “8 days of Pride” where you can find a place where you fit in to each of those celebrations. Our 3013 Motto “KEEP CALM AND SHOW PRIDE” this year I think represents that if the GLBTQ Community KEEPS CALM and stays united and continues to SHOW PRIDE oneone-day Alabama will join the other states that have recognized equal rights for our community. In 2004 the first and only one state legalized marriage of same sex partners it was for years later before the country had state number 2 and as of May 21st 2013 there are now twelve states recognizing equal rights for our community. The battle for equality is certainly not yet won, and I am sure there will be many more setbacks along the way, but I feel certain that in the near future that there will be “a place for us”. In the past four years working with Central Alabama Pride two years as a volunteer and two years as board member we have seen some progress. Our web site has been a valuable resource for the community and across the states access to a counselor and other GLBTQ friendly business establishments. We now have access at no cost to Vertical Response to send out news letters and event notifications. We need you to go to the website and signup. “Junior Board”, “Stuff the Bus - Community Fundraiser for school supplies and uniforms” “2013 PrideFest Food Drive for BAO food pantry” and other community projects are in the planning stages. I want to take this opportunity to thank the members of the board for their had work and dedication. The board members give of their time and resources all year long to accomplish the goals and mission of Central Alabama Pride. We would not be able to put on Pride Week every year if it weren’t for all of our volunteers. I would like to thank them as well. Last and certainly not the least I would like to thank our Pride Partners and sponsors who through their generosity year after year allow us to serve our community. I am very proud and blessed to be a part of such a great community. I hope you will take part in all of activities and join me as we celebrate Pride Week. I would like to encourage anyone who would like to be a part of Central Alabama Pride, Inc. as a Board Member, Junior Board Member, or as a Volunteer to do so . Dennis R Garner President Central Alabama Pride, Inc.

2013 Pride Parade Grand Marshal Libertee Belle This year’s Grand Marshal is probably one of the Most Loved, Most Hated and Most Misunderstood individuals to ever grace a city’s LGBT Community! Libertee Belle was born Ronald Simoneau (in a year that she will not reveal) in Nashua, New Hampshire and spent a great part of his childhood in Blackpool, England being schooled by the Sisters of the Holy Cross. At the age of 12 Ronnie moved back to Nashua to settle with his Grandparents. Ronnie began dabbling in Drag while still in High School and can entertain you with non-stop stories of his early years (get him to tell you the one about Chrysanthemum). After finishing High School he served 6 years in the US Navy. After leaving the Navy, he studied Journalism at Portland State University where he was living as a woman under the name Ramona Simmons. After earning his BA he wrote for “the Northwest Fountain” a Gay Newspaper in Portland and performed Dahl and Penney’s Show Lounge. She graced the cities of San Francisco, Boston, Baltimore, and New Orleans under various names before settling in Birmingham. The restaurant Industry brought him to Birmingham in 1985 to manage the Steak & Egg Kitchen, also known as the “Fag & Drag” (now the Purple Onion) on Southside. After seeing an article in the Birmingham News about the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia, he chose to use it as his nom-de-plume to write a gossip column for the Alabama Forum. He entertained and informed with columns such as “Under the Barstool” and countless news stories under the names R.M Simoneau and Sean Robert Michaels for many years. Libertee also found a platform for her political views by becoming a local celebrity on the morning call-in shows on local radio, challenging the likes of Russ and Dee Fine, Matt Murphy and even Paul Finebaum. Libertee even made an unsuccessful run for City Council. Libertee has appeared one the stage of just about every Gay Bar that has existed since her arrival in this city. Wherever she called her “bar home” she has worked tirelessly year after year to raise money for Pride. In 1989, when Birmingham held its First Gay Pride Parade, Libertee was the only Drag Queen to participate. Fearing any hostile incident, the Police Department placed Libertee at the end of the Parade for her “safety”. In every Parade since, Libertee has brought up the rear of the Parade as she will as Grand Marshal. When Central Alabama Pride was formed in 1989, Libertee was a founding board member and her name (well… Ronald Simoneau) appears on our incorporation and our by-laws. To our knowledge, Libertee is the only person who has participated in every Pride Parade and to celebrate her 25th we can think of no one in this city more deserving of the title of Grand Marshal!
