Commissioners’ Corner On behalf of the Board of Park Commissioners, and the CWPD staff, I would like to make sure you are aware the CentervilleWashington Park District levy is on the November 7 voting ballot. Currently, this levy funds one-third of the Park District’s budget. CWPD has been operating with the same levy funding since 2008. The replacement of this levy at 1.0 mill will provide funds to maintain the standard of care for district facilities and requested improvements. Turn to page 4 for information about what the levy has funded in the past 10 years and to learn about your Park District’s community-driven plans for the next 10 years. As you flip through this newsletter, you will find many ways for you and your loved ones to explore your community’s BIG backyard. We are excited about the new Path Finder and Trail Master Challenges. These two self-guided fitness challenges will help you discover YOUR PARKS as you explore new paths and stay active this winter. In addition, there are prizes for those who finish! Our staff has created over 120 programs, 20 of which are NEW, including ‘The Ugly Sweater Oh What Fun Run’,’ New Naturalists Club’, and ‘Kid’s Creativity Workshop’; along with repeat favorites like the annual ‘Styrofoam Recycling Event’, ‘Luminary Walk’ and ‘Winter Hiking Club’! There are also a number of enrichment camps to keep children engaged over the winter break. As you head out to enjoy the parks, take a moment to enjoy some of the newest improvements.

• There is also a new picnic plaza at this entrance, adjacent to the recently remodeled McEwen Barn, which will be outfitted with picnic tables in time for warmer weather! • When you walk the paved path at Schoolhouse Park, you will notice several areas where the stamped asphalt has been replaced with new, accessible concrete. • At Yankee Park, dugout covers were installed on two diamonds thanks to matching funds from Centerville Baseball Softball League. Baseball season is a ways off, but the shade will be welcomed during that hot sports season! • Once again, Park District staff continued reforesting efforts by planting more than 120 trees in various parks, creating shade, habitat and cleaner air! Some of the trees are memorial trees. Did you know the Park District has a tree and bench dedication program? Visit cwpd. org/support/dedications to learn more. Behind the scenes, the staff is constantly working to create innovative and inspiring programs and to implement improvements based on your feedback. We are ever so grateful to our energetic staff, dedicated volunteers, generous donors and supportive community that helps make your community’s BIG backyard so exceptional! Alex Pearl Park Board Secretary P.S. The Centerville-Washington Park District Board of Park Commissioners holds public meetings once a month throughout the year. View the schedule on the Park District website: cwpd.org/about/public-meeting-schedule/

• The paved path at Grant Park’s McEwen entrance now has interpretive signage thanks to our ongoing partnership with the Centerville Rotary Club. Each sign allows the reader to connect, observe and support local wildlife.

Volunteer Spotlight

The recent completion of the 0.6-mile paved path around Iron Horse Park means that all eight of your community parks now boast a paved perimeter path, providing ample opportunity for you to be active and enjoy the outdoors with family and friends! Survey data shows residents want the Centerville-Washington Park District to continue focusing on trails and paths. Over the past 5 years, we have added or improved about 9 miles of trails. That means your park district promotes community health and wellness by providing 39 miles of trails and paths in 18 different parks! Where can you enjoy these paved paths? Try them all! Check the map on page 18 for park locations, or visit cwpd.org. • • • • • • • • • • • • •

MEENA SONNYCALB Meena started volunteering as a freshman going into her sophomore year at Centerville High School. Now, in her junior year, she has continued volunteering with the parks. She has always spent a lot of her time outdoors. Whether that was going to the creek with friends or going for a hike with her family, she has always loved being in nature. In the third grade, she went backpacking with her dad for the first time in the Smoky Mountains. She went a second time in Colorado in the fifth grade. Even with friends, she finds much of her free time being spent outside. Aside from spending time outdoors, she has danced for 11 years and played the viola for five years.

Meena says, “Living so close to a park made choosing to volunteer with the Centerville-Washington Park District an easy decision. Being able to interact with kids while also spending time outdoors has been the best part about volunteering. Although the camps are focused on teaching the kids about nature, I’m also learning new things about our environment with them!” The Centerville-Washington Park District would like to thank Meena, and all volunteers for giving their time and talents to our community! If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please contact Community Engagement Coordinator Ginger Clark at 937-4335155 x234 or gclark@cwpd.org. In recent years, the Centerville-Washington Park District has…

LEVY INFORMATION

• Groomed fields daily, allowing more than 4,000 young athletes to play baseball, football, lacrosse, soccer and softball each year. • Planted more than 1,000 trees. • Added 6 miles of new hiking trails and 3 miles of paved multiuse trails. • Offered 100% more community special events over the past two years. • Opened flush restrooms at Oak Grove Park. • Expanded camp offerings by 40% since 2021, providing over 550 additional children the opportunity to have a nature or recreation camp experience.

Issue 19 is on the ballot November 7! The Park Board wishes to share some facts about the levy.

• Enhanced the archery range, as well as added opportunities for archery instruction.

The 1.0 mill levy will replace the current 0.9 mill levy that originated in 2004 and was renewed by voters in 2014. It will provide funds to maintain the standard of care for district facilities and requested park improvements for another 10 years.

• Partnered with youth athletic organizations to make parks safer with outdoor AEDs.

How much is it?

• Added a picnic shelter to the Smith Entrance of Bill Yeck Park.

• Added shade structures at several community parks. • Installed a new wayfinding system at Bill Yeck Park.

For each $100,000 of assessed home value, a homeowner pays $35.00/year. Therefore, a homeowner with a house valued at $200,000 would pay $70.00/year, or $0.19/day.

• Planted nearly 120 acres of pollinator habitat around the District.

Because the election is in November, the levy cost will be based on your assessed home value before the 2023 property revaluations.

What does the levy fund?

In general, this levy provides one-third of the day-to-day operational costs for 51 parks, including upkeep of athletic facilities, trails, shelters, playgrounds, sprayground, dog park and support amenities, as well as some programs, such as outdoor recreation and nature study. Your parks are what keeps Centerville and Washington Township open, green and livable. This levy will ensure these services continue at the current high standard without interruption.

• Expanded access to the Grant Park, McEwen Road entrance with increased parking, restoration of the bank barn, addition of a picnic area, and installation of an ADA paved path. • Worked with many volunteers and volunteer groups to provide park improvements and programs. In 2022, volunteers donated 4,558 hours, with an estimated value of $145,000! • Secured more than $2.9 million in grant money for park improvements since 2016 – money that is 100% invested in your parks. With that grant money we were able to…

This levy will provide: • Repair of aging hardscape areas, such as paved trails and courts. • Conservation and habitat management of natural areas. • Replacement of aging equipment and park amenities, such as playgrounds.

• Stabilize critical streambank along Hole’s Creek and construct a stormwater wetland.

• Continuation of CWPD’s ADA Transition Plan. • Retention of highly qualified staff.

• Purchase the Hithergreen property and, with the help of park neighbors, create a brand new neighborhood park that includes a playground, shelter, paved path and nature trail. • Redevelop Forest Field Park to include restrooms, a playground and a nature play area.

• Implementation of the Grant Park Master Plan.

• Continuation of award-winning program offerings.

• Save one of the largest remaining natural habitats in the center of the community with the 32-acre extension of Pleasant Hill Park.

Questions?

• Add 33 acres of green space to Grant Park, expanding recreation opportunities for the community. • Install a new, inclusive playground at Schoolhouse Park.

Contact us at 937-433-5155 or mail@cwpd.org!
