Ty Marshal - Executive Director, Visionary, & Manifestor

“Commonplaces never become tiresome. It is we who become tired when we cease to be curious and appreciative. We find that it is not a new scene which is needed, but a new viewpoint.” -Norman Rockwell Oftentimes, visitors to the Center for the Arts remark on the variety of ways Homer, New York appears like a “Norman Rockwell painting.” In many ways, these observations are correct. It’s a small slice of Americana.

Idyllic in many ways. Friendly. Historic. Our visitors feel it, because we feel it.

The Center for the Arts building, a beautiful Romanesque structure, built in 1893, recently celebrated its 125th year. The former First Baptist Church of Homer building stands as strong as the year it was built, and we are eternally striving to improve conditions, both to preserve the historic nature of the facility, and also to modernize operations in ways that improve our ability to provide a space that presents world-class performance experiences, a wide variety of educational opportunities, and an open door for the greater community members' desires to explore their personal creative path.

Every single day of the week, the Center for the Arts facilities are buzzing with activity. Dance classes, theater rehearsals, yoga sessions, art gallery openings, lectures, puppet shows, film screenings, community events, weddings, birthdays, national- and world-class concerts.

As a 501c3 not-for-profit organization, we’re proud to serve our community in so many diverse ways.

What began as a grassroots effort of our founders (many of them still our giving--and forgiving--neighbors) continues to expand beyond some of our wildest expectations. And for others, the Center for the Arts Homer is expanding exactly as expected.

Whether you are a Sponsor, Donor, Member, Volunteer, Artist, or Audience Member, it is through the manifesting of your personal creative journey that the Center for the Arts bears a light for you, and continues to flourish in so many delightful and creative ways.

Whether you enjoy experiencing live music, or practice acting in a live theater show, or take time to view artworks from artists of local, regional, and national reputation - your personal creative journey tells the story of you, and all the ways in which you can express and celebrate your innermost joys, dreams, and hopes. It is through our personal creative journey that we can feed our souls, expand our beliefs, and discover ourselves in more vast ways - and the Center for the Arts is honored to help serve this journey.

It all started in 1999 when Craig Brooks finally burnt out on his auto business job and Michelle could no longer fight the urge to move closer to her mom.

They sold their house in the Cascade mountains of Washington state, packed their two young kids up, and drove 3000 miles to up­ state New York.

They planned on opening a drive-thru coffee shop in Ithaca, thinking that people there may warm up to the idea of specialty coffee pretty quickly, but they just couldn't find a suitable location. Weeks went by, and every day they would search central New York for the perfect spot, always returning to their home in East Homer without any luck.

One day, Craig was driving aimlessly, trying to find his way around Cortland, and he ended up on the corner of Port Watson and Pome­ roy. Wow! This place might work! And it's for sale! He ran home, got Michelle and the kids and made an offer on the old Hess station the very next day.

Through the late summer and fall of 1999, Craig, Michelle, and the Brooks family could be found painting, cleaning, installing and gener­ ally sweating their butts off restoring their building at 160 Port Watson.

People thought they were nuts! They would stop by and ask, "What are you guys doing?" and Craig or Michelle would say, "Building a drive-thru coffee shop!" people would offer kind words of encourage­ ment, or just laugh, but generally, folks were pretty sure that Cortland wasn't ready for drive-thru coffee.

Finally, with no money left in the bank, and cut fingers and sore backs, Craig and Michelle opened Coffee Mania at 5:30 AM on De­ cember 7th, 1999.

Thanks to the amazing and overwhelming support of the Cortland community, Coffee Mania became a success and opened a second location in the Groton Avenue Plaza on December 10th, 2003.
