Leading by Generous Example M. Alden and Dorothy Spach Siegel ‘59
As colleges and universities throughout the nation compete for students, it is crucial that Centenary be recognized as an institution that delivers value. To that end, the College set and achieved a number of aggressive goals for the 2012–2013 year. Thanks to the generosity, hard work and strategic contributions of alumni, faculty, administrators, staff and friends, Centenary continues to strengthen our position as a college of choice for traditional undergraduate and continuing professional education.

Leading by Example Alden and Doll Spach Siegel ’59 launch campaign with first endowment gift. As Centenary embarks on an ambitious campaign, Honor Our Past, Invest in Our Future, two of the campaign co-chairs, Alden and Dorothy “Doll” Spach Siegel ’59, have set an example by making the first endowment gift. Doll says a combination of hard work and good fortune has enabled them to give so generously. Alden, who also serves as a College Trustee, adds that they were always careful to put away a few dollars for a rainy day. “Now we have a few extra dollars,” he said, “and the best way I can think of to utilize them is in helping others who have been a little less fortunate than us to get a good education.” When they agreed to helm the endowment campaign with co-chair Linda Van Winkle Watkins ’62, they decided to set an example. “I feel very strongly,” said Doll, “that if you’re the leader, show that you’re the leader. If you’re not one of the first ones, it doesn’t encourage other people.” “We have more than 30 members of the Board of Trustees now,” Alden said. “The Board voted to approve this Campaign. The expectation is 100 percent participation in making Centenary a philanthropic priority.”
Alden and Doll Siegel ’59, with one of the many antique sofas they have donated to the College.
While donor generosity has transformed the College in recent years, the Siegels believe there’s more to be done. “Centenary has been helped immensely by the construction of the David and Carol Lackland Center,” said Alden.
“Act today, because Centenary needs you.” — Doll Spach Siegel ’59 “What the Lacklands did was transform the College from a nice place to a very good one. Now we need to complete the job by making sure we have the funds to keep tuition at a reasonable level. Impact is the key word,” he continued. “So what
if you give $50,000 to a large university? With endowments in the billions, they could get away with charging no tuition.” Doll agreed. “At Centenary, you can actually see where your money goes. With a smaller college that can use every penny, you really feel like you’ve helped.” Money is crucial, but there are other ways to help, as well. “Networking is so important!” said Doll. “We encourage people who went to Centenary to talk about the school. When you find someone who went and is capable of giving, bring it to the school’s attention.” Doll summarized the couple’s philanthropic vision: “We want people to remember where they got their education. Come back, and thank Centenary for where you are today.” Alden encourages anyone who intends to give a gift to act soon. “There’s no way to know what you will or will not be allowed to do [in terms of tax deductions and liabilities] in the coming years,” he said. Doll added, “Act today, because Centenary needs you.”

Driving Academic Excellence New Environmental Science Major Centenary College introduced an Environmental Science major in Fall 2012, followed by the opening of a new Environmental Science Center (ESC) on May 9, 2013, at the Charles O. Hayford State Fish Hatchery. Together, the ESC and the College’s proximity to the Delaware Water Gap provide an ideal learning laboratory for students to test water and soil samples, conduct research and investigate cutting-edge issues in environmental science. The new facility was made possible by a partnership between Centenary and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Division of Fish and Wildlife.

Blended Courses for Undergraduates Blended courses that combine on-site classes with extended online learning have, for a number of years, brought higher education and professional advancement within reach for teachers, businesspeople and other adult learners at Centenary. Now the College is extending the same advantage to undergraduates by introducing 10 blended courses spanning a number of academic disciplines, including Business, English, Criminal Justice, Psychology and Sociology. Blended coursework offers teachers and students the flexibility and expanded scope of online learning combined with the face-to-face interaction of classroom learning. The College plans to add 10 more blended courses for the 2014–2015 academic year.
“We look forward to a long and successful collaboration with Centenary College and its students, who may be future environmental leaders here in New Jersey,’’ said DEP Commissioner Bob Martin.
Full-Time Faculty Growth
11 new full-time faculty joined Centenary College in 2012–2013. Dedicated faculty drive academic excellence, and this crucial investment in intellectual prowess helps maintain small classes, expand research and learning opportunities, and improve student outcomes. Celebrating Our History: Forging Our Future, the strategic plan for Centenary College, calls for the addition of 10 new faculty hires over the next five years.
Centenary Is Raising Its Academic Profile on All Fronts Admissions has grown more competitive and the average G.P.A. of incoming freshmen has increased. Students are becoming better writers and communicators with greater emphasis on Freshman Writing and enhancements to the Writing Collaboratory. They are also graded more rigorously, using meaningful assessments that better prepare Centenarians for successful careers and lives. These measures lead to improved student retention and graduation rates, two critical measures that determine the overall quality of the College’s educational experience. Computers and information technology are more important than ever for students.

Vibrant Living and Learning Environment Better, More Efficient Facilities In keeping with Celebrating Our History: Forging Our Future, the strategic plan for Centenary College, a number of facilities projects are in the works to support excellence in the living and learning environment. Plans have been drawn to relocate Health Services from the third floor of the Edward W. Seay Administration Building to 605 Grand Avenue in 2014. The new location, a short walk from campus, provides dedicated space for the delivery of essential health services and preventative care. The Tutoring Center now occupies an area on the lower level of the Seay Building in a purpose-built space designed to accommodate the Center’s professional tutoring program, Math Lab and mentored study groups. Keeping existing facilities in good working order is also crucial to delivering a high quality Centenary experience. Maintenance projects in 2012–2013 included drainage improvements; two new barn roofs at the College’s Equestrian Center in Long Valley, N.J.; repairs to the front porch of the Edward W. Seay Administration Building (right) and the parking lot of Founders Hall; a new HVAC system for the Ferry Building; and new outdoor patio furniture to bring the College community together for study, conversation and collaboration.

1,400 solar panels Power Play The College now has a hedge against rising electricity prices, thanks to 1,400 solar panels installed last summer on the rooftops of three campus buildings. The project, which will generate in excess of 335,000 kWh of power annually, is a result of a partnership between Centenary and the energy company Dynamic Solar and involved no up-front cost to the College.
More than $2.2 million in state grants have been awarded to Centenary through “The Building Our Future Bond Act,” a measure approved by New Jersey voters in 2012. The funds will help build new Biology, Chemistry and Physics labs for the College’s growing science program; improve classroom accessibility; and help build elevators for Trevorrow Hall and the Edward W. Seay Administration Building. All projects are expected to be completed by September 2014. In addition, an $800,000 grant from the New Jersey Department of Transportation will fund major improvements to Church Street, which connects Centenary students and faculty with downtown Hackettstown. Improvements will include new lampposts, benches, sidewalks, road resurfacing, drainage improvements and a bike lane to encourage students to “go green.” The project is expected to begin in 2014.

The Centenary Experience Second Year Experience Builds on Decade-Long Success of First Year Experience For 10 years, First Year Experience (FYE) has equipped students with the tools and support to grow intellectually, discover new talents and become productive members of the Centenary community. Based on FYE’s track record of helping new students foster strong connections to classmates, faculty and staff, the College introduced Second Year Experience in Fall 2013. The new program builds on the skills, accomplishments and confidence acquired during students’ first year at Centenary. Peer mentoring is an instrumental part of both programs. “These programs are the best marketing strategy for Centenary College,” said History and Education major Quinn Khouri ’15, a First Year Leader for FYE. “What a brilliant way to build and maintain a solid connection between students, faculty and staff!”
Students who desire to make a difference are drawn to Centenary for its service-minded culture. This year, Centenarians accumulated more than 21,000 volunteer hours, developing a strong sense of responsibility to the community and the world. Quinn Khouri ’15

For Fulbright Scholars, First Stop is Centenary For the second consecutive year, Centenary was selected to host a Fulbright Gateway Orientation. The week-long program, August 5–9, helped 45 Fulbright Graduate Students representing 29 countries build skills for academic and social success in the United States. The program is sponsored by the United States Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and designed by the Institute of International Education in cooperation with the ECA. “The people at Centenary were amazing; everyone was so hospitable,” said Khaled Hamadeh, a Fulbright Graduate Student from Lebanon studying International Affairs at Georgia Tech in Atlanta. Hamadeh appreciated the workshops and programs presented by Centenary faculty that helped him adjust to American culture and prepared him for graduate study in the United States. Dean for College and Community Affairs Nancy Paffendorf said the feeling is mutual. “We had the opportunity to introduce [the Fulbrighters] to American culture, and they taught us so much as well. It brought the world to Hackettstown.” 4 CENTENARY COLLEGE

Thanks to the generous and enthusiastic response of the Centenary community to a challenge grant from the Reeves Foundation, the groundbreaking for the new Athletic Turf Field was held on September 30, 2013. The $1 million project is expected to be completed in early 2014 and will extend practice time, improve performance and lower maintenance costs. The Centenary Lacrosse teams will begin competing on the Field Turf XM Turf surface in Spring 2014, while the Soccer squads will play at the new fields beginning in August 2014. In addition to the upgraded field surface, Cyclones fans will soon track the Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse and Soccer teams success on a new scoreboard as they cheer from new spectator seating. Move-In Day is an annual tradition.
The Independent College Fund of New Jersey Centenary College continues to benefit from generous corporate and foundation support given through the Independent College Fund of New Jersey. Begun in 1953, the Fund makes a single, united annual request to corporations and foundations on behalf of the 14 member colleges. For 58 years, the Fund has continued to secure corporate financial support for the State’s independent colleges and to promote a greater understanding of the importance of maintaining the opportunity for choice between public and private education. The Independent College Fund of New Jersey represents all of the State’s fully accredited, privately controlled colleges and universities, except those that are engaged primarily in religious studies. The following donors contributed to the Fund in calendar year 2012. Most gifts are allocated by formula although a number are designated to specific institutions. Support in 2012 for independent higher education in New Jersey through the Fund totaled $1,144,574.87. $100,000 and above Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies Trustees and Staff of the Independent College Fund of New Jersey $50,000 – $99,999 Roche Foundation The UPS Foundation $25,000 – $49,999 C. Thank you, Centenary donors. The generosity of Centenary donors made my education experience completely unique. A gift from Carol Harvey Barrows ’61 and her husband, Bill, made it possible for me to experience an internship at the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute. Thank you Carol, Bill and Centenary, for helping me pursue my passion for marine biology.
