Hello there! My name is Celina Nguyen and I am from a city called Kitchener in Canada. I am a student at the University of Waterloo studying Global Business and Digital Arts hoping to graduate in Spring of 2021. In school, I took part in GBDA Society, Creator’s Collective, as well as Fashion For Change which kept me always creating throughout the tough semesters. As a designer, I am incredibly detail-oriented and would even call myself a perfectionist when it comes to design. I enjoy all things in the arts which includes graphic design, illustrations, user experience/interface design, and video/photo editing. Being a full-time student and a part-time worker, I also try to work on projects on the side to keep my creativity flowing.

gbda society During my second year, I became the Chief of Graphic Design for the GBDA Society that creates opportunities for GBDA students at the University of Waterloo.

My responsibilities are making all of the graphics and promotional materials for events associated with the society. I work with the external Chief of Communications and Director of Operations to coordinate an advertising schedule ensuring students are aware about what is happening in the community.

gbda bops vol. 1 GBDA Society planned and hosted a karaoke event mainly aimed for second years students. Students were able to sign up with songs they would like to perform in the atrium during lunch time. It gained attraction through GBDA Society’s and other student’s Instagram stories.
GBDA Society hosts a sticker contest where GBDA students can submit their own designs based around a theme. Stickers are chosen through votes by students and then the society takes charge and prints them out.

uw creator’s collective In second semester of second year, I was on the publication team for UW Creator’s Collective. They are a student initiative that aims to empower and support creative communities in GBDA and MDEI. I had the opportunity to be on a team of 8 members to create a magazine showcasing student work. The magazine consisted of 30 full-gloss pages and was handed out for free.

For my final project in my grade 12 graphics class, we were create a magazine that featured specific elements such as grids, photo manipulations, advertisements, and much more. I compiled my design work, illustrations, and photography to create a “portfolio-like” booklet. Throughout this process, I realized that I enjoyed publication design and wanted to continue to do it.

uw rencana UW Rencana is an application created with the intention of facilitating the housefinding process in Stratford for upper year students in the University of Waterloo’s Global Business and Digital Arts program. The issues of a large number of students moving to Stratford, the lack of affordable student housing in Stratford, finding roommates, and even just the general limited knowledge most students have of Stratford collectively make house hunting a taxing process. As a team, UW Rencana has tasked ourselves with creating a phone application designed to connect students with prospective roommates, houses, and apartments in the Stratford area to help take a little stress out of University.

hafila In one of my GBDA courses in first year, we were to design an application that would improve life in Canada. My group members and I designed “Hafila. Research objectives were to seek out what problems foreigners came across when using public transportation (PT) in Canada and how often they use it. From various studies, Hafila found that Waterloo is insufficient in PT and indicates that there are differences in the level of PT used by visitors between rural and urban destinations. The problem that Hafila is trying to fix is to help new transit users and tourists understand the transit system.

celxoart I always started out doing traditional art with a pencil and a paper, but I invested in a drawing tablet and began to explore digital art. I create portraits of people that I admire and post them on Instagram where I gained a following. I make my portraits in Adobe Photoshop and continue to find my art style everyday. Being an artist on Instagram has motivated me to create as much art as possible and help me realize how passionate I am about art and design.

I began practicing my skills in Photoshop in January of 2017 and practiced for about a month before tackling actual full-on portraits. Over time, I saw my growth as a digital artist and have been in love with it ever since.
