MARQUEE IS THE STAGE
The hinged front facade is marque, awning and stage. Starting in a vertical position, it promotes the theater during the day. At night, as patrons start to arrive, it transitions in a drawbridge like motion from marquee to awning, providing a covered outdoor courtyard. Once theatergoers move inside for the show, they watch as the facade undergoes one last transformation, carving through the theater, to take its place as the performance stage. 1

The theater is presented as a city scaled room located on Highland Blvd. The front facade opens as a signifier to the city that a performance is about to begin, and then closes, encapsulated within a semi transparent faceted shell. In this closed state, it retains its city presence as onlookers can see stage lights and catch glimpses of performers as they are lowered from the fly tower onto the stage.

VOLUMIZED STRUCTURAL SPIRAL Structural tubes spiral around the central core left behind by the moving facade. These tubes become volumized and occupiable as they accommodate various theater requirements, becoming fly tower, lighting, electrified acoustics, stairs, sound booth, stage, seating and boxes. This structure accounts for the only enclosed spaces within the theater, as the surrounding, faceted skin is semi-transparent, making the theater appear open to the surrounding city.
