resident PROFILE David & Maree Lawrence

It never dawned on David and Maree Lawrence that they would one day be living directly next door to the chapel where they were married 7 years ago. David is a secondary school teacher and Maree works in Human resources in Hawthorn and both hold a strong connection to the suburb of Camberwell, in particular the Nazareth House Chapel. We caught up with them both and discovered why Realm was the perfect fit for them. What about Realm caught your eye? The location and the design of the development were the two most important features. Having already lived in Hollsmoor Rd 750m from Realm, we are very keen to return to the area. Also our friends and family live in Camberwell and neighbouring eastern suburbs so it’s exciting to be close to them again.

design The creative mind behind Realm

Residences of many architectural styles and language can be found in the neighbourhoods surrounding Cornell Street and in the wider context of Camberwell. No one can deny the charm and sense of community of these architecturally diverse and leafy streets. This is why when developing news homes in such an established suburb one of most vital objectives is to preserve the urban character that residents and non-residents alike hold so dearly. Architects Rothelowman are the creative minds behind the design of Realm Camberwell. Renowned for presenting design solutions that are commercially sound, contextually relevant and environmentally conscious, Rothelowman has ensured that homes at Realm would set a precedent for modern living. From day one Rothelowman embarked upon the opportunity to create a development that delivers a strong sense of place and overall quality to match that of the surrounding area.

With this in mind they have developed an architectural language and palette that allows the range of homes to have their own expression but belong to the same family. “The architectural language of the homes throughout the eastern suburbs has since first established, been of cumulative change, expanding upon and adding to the legacy of previous generations.” “We consider that this development nourishes this spirit of progress and give focus to new life for the area” stated Rothelowman. The architecture seeks to create a visually interesting built form with a range of dwelling designs and activated streetscapes that will enhance the urban environment, add value to the natural landscape and stand the test of time.

What are you most looking forward to when moving into your new home? Leisurely walks through Back Creek reserve on a Saturday morning. Then relaxing with a coffee and the paper at one of the café’s on Riversdale Road. Also just being close to such fantastic amenity, such as great restaurants, parks, Camberwell Market, Burke road shopping and the Rivoli cinema. How do you feel about living in a new development in such an established suburb? A definite bonus! Low maintenance living means we can spend more time relaxing and enjoying the parks, walking track and café’s. We also love the contemporary design and feel of Realm. We look forward to seeing the excellent workmanship and quality finishes.

MDG Landscape architects are a highly praised design practice with international and national recognition; they are the brains behind the landscape design and master planning of Realm Camberwell. The main driver behind MDG’s design rationale is the understanding of the requirements of those who will experience the spaces they create and then translating that insight into design outcomes which are imaginative, engaging and functional as well as being environmentally responsible. Dynamic and functional solutions that successfully integrate human activity and environmental understanding are vital elements that all MDG designs boast. The harmonisation between the dwelling architecture and landscape architecture ensures

that the concept of Realm is realised; a development of distinctive identity and sense of place. When conceptualising the landscape design of Realm Camberwell the primary focus for MDG Landscape architects was to complement the existing parklands of Back Creek Reserve within the development as well as create a public space that connects the reserve and the development. The introduction of a seating node within this public space, which is visible from the entry approach road, provides strong interface with the walking trail, whilst excludes dogs from the area with various fencing treatments thereby creating a safe amenity for residents and their children as well as the public. The planting palette has been developed with a strong native theme to ensure cohesion with the

existing vegetation. A layered approach has been taken in the arrangements of the planting, with a gradation of native species through to some exotic species as one moves from the reserve to the streetscapes. For more information about MDG Landscape architects visit their website: www.mdgla.com.au
