I went to the grocery store after a long day of work the list included such vagaries as yogurt, cereal, ice cream and spaghetti sauce

by the time I reached the spaghetti sauce I was on the phone, not in tears but tear-adjacent.

Greek, low-fat, coconut—already negotiated; four cereals: one chocolate, one novelty, one with strawberries, and raisin bran were in the cart; two ice creams: espresso chip and chocolate peanut butter cup were slowly softening.

I stood there before a wall of red sauces with no decisions left a bankrupt puddle of crushed tomatoes.

I borrowed the strength of the voice on the phone selecting a home-style marinara with onions and garlic in a jar that held a pleasing shape and turned my battered spirit toward the long, quiet, checkout lines.

But just then the voice continued, soft and full of love, maybe you can get some wine too?
