Once you are a member of Cedarhurst you can participate in our clubs and affinity groups for no additional membership fee. Club meetings are at Shrode Art Center unless otherwise noted. There are no refunds on class fees unless the class has been cancelled. Refunds will be made if a replacement can be found to fill your place in the class or you provide a replacement.

Classes of the Shrode Art Center are designed for and open to beginning students unless otherwise stated. High school students may enroll in adult classes. Members of Cedarhurst receive a 10% discount on class fees. (Excludes Specialty Workshops) Some classes are limited in number of students; registrations taken in order received with payment. Deadlines are set to allow instructors time to get materials ordered/prepared for beginning of class. ISBE C.EU. credits available.

Klimt Cups Learning about Luster and all that Bling! Friday, March 16

Time: 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm Instructor: Carrie Gibbs Class fee: $20 (includes ceramic cup, luster, and kiln firing) Students will learn about ceramic luster glazes while being inspired by the Austrian painter Gustav Klimt. Pre-made ceramic cups will be provided as our ‘canvas’. After discussing basic painting techniques students will paint real gold and silver luster spirals, circles and rectangles creating unique patterns. The cups will be fired overnight and be ready to pick up the following afternoon. Students are welcome to bring their own beverage or snack of choice to enjoy during class.

Clay | Get A Handle On Handles! Saturday, May 12

Time: 10:30 am to 4:30 pm Instructor: Robert Lorenz | www.lorenzpottery.com Class fee: $40 (includes materials, glazing, and kiln firing) Students will learn the basics of throwing simple forms on the potter’s wheel and how to attach handles that complement their form. During this workshop Robert will demonstrate how to make handles for cups, casseroles and basket forms. Some prior throwing experience is helpful but not required. Students are also welcome to hand-build or use the Extruder to create cylinder forms. You may bring your own lunch or can order delivery to the art center. 4


Bring your favorite beverage and learn the magic of clay. This is a great way for beginners (having never touched clay) to learn the basics of clay and create a unique masterpiece. Finished pieces will be fired in the kiln and ready for pick-up two weeks after class. (Must be 21 years old.) Private Parties are available for special events, all ages, and you may choose one of the themes below or request a special theme.

Folded Bowls Sunday, April 8 | Time: 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm

Instructor: Carrie Gibbs Class fee: $30 (includes materials, glazing, and kiln firing) Bring your favorite beverage and learn how to hand-build folded bowls out of slabs of clay. Easy templates will be provided to help create beautiful, interesting and useful forms.

Throwing on the Wheel Thursday, May 3 | Time: 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm

Instructors: Carrie Gibbs and Judy Mason Class fee: $30 (includes materials, glazing, and kiln firing) Bring your favorite beverage and have fun learning the basics of throwing on the wheel. This class is a great way for beginners (having never touched clay) to create a small bowl or vessel. More experienced throwers will be guided on an individual basis. Finished pieces will be fired in the kiln and ready for pick-up two weeks after class.

Instructor: Judy Mason Class fee includes cost of clay, glazes, and kiln firing. All ages welcome to participate. | Ages 12 and under: $15 | Adults $25 This is a great opportunity to learn the basics of working with clay and witness the magic of the ancient art form - Raku an exciting outdoor firing experience! As the kiln is ‘peaking’ at over 1800 degrees, the molten red pieces are grabbed out of the kiln with tongs and placed in nearby containers filled with combustible materials. The smoke and flames create metallic colors and deep, black charcoal effects on the surface of the pottery. After cooling, the surfaces are cleaned to reveal the magic of the glazes. May 17 instructor Judy Mason will teach you how to create a clay pot using hand-building methods (more experienced clay artists will be guided independently on projects of their choosing.) Return on May 24 to glaze you work. Take your art home after the kiln firing on June 7

Polymer Clay Animals FAMILY WORKSHOP

Saturday, April 21 Time: 10:00 am to 12:00 pm Instructor: David Mason Class fee: $20 adults ($10 for children age 12 and under) Material fee: $5 pay to instructor Additional materials available for purchase Students will learn basic clay techniques of modeling figures and marbleizing colors. Polymer clay is brightly colored and fired at 275 degrees for approx. 20 min. Students will be able to create small animals and critters that could be turned into a pendant or a decorative figurine. 6


Photography: Basics+ Saturday, June 9 | 10:30 am to 4:30 pm Sunday, June 10 | 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm Instructor: David Hammond | www.davehammondphoto.com Class Fee: $75 This intermediate to advanced photography workshop will focus on how to create dynamic black and white images. Professional photographer, David Hammond will discuss several different elements of making and processing images (filters, long exposures, Black and White conversion, panoramas, and more). Students need basic knowledge of Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements). Bring your camera, laptop computer (optional), and sack lunch for this engaging weekend workshop. Time will be spent photographing the sculpture park and grounds at Cedarhurst as well as classroom discussion and instruction time. Students should have “beyond a beginner level� for this class.

Wire Heart Pendant Sunday, April 15 | Time: 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm Instructor: Michelle Tackitt Class fee: $25 Material fee: $15 pay to instructor day of class In one afternoon students will learn how to bend and wrap copper wire into the shape of a heart. Different wrapping methods will be discussed and demonstrated as well as how to wire wrap a crystal. A pair of needle nose pliers would be helpful to bring but several pairs will be provided. Students may bring their own snacks and beverages. 7

Saturday, May 26 Students will be able to design their own unique basket. The size will be determined by the size hoop chosen. Students can use a variety of colored reed or decide to keep it natural. (If a student does not complete their basket by the end of the day Saturday they can return on a Thursday evening “Basketeer Club Meeting” to work individually with the instructor to complete their project.) *Basket Workshop Work Kit: It is helpful for students to bring dozen clip clothespins, towel, small plastic washtub, pencil and scissors.

Nature Watercolor Painting Tuesday, April 10

Time: 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm Instructor: Judy Mason Class fee: $25 | Material fee: $5 Using nature for inspiration, students will learn how to layer watercolor paint to create texture and depth. Judy will demonstrate how to use different kinds of salt to create organic patterns in their painting. Students may choose to paint leaves, flowers or botanicals. A variety of source imagery will be provided or students are welcome to bring their own.

Mosaic Garden Stepping Stone Workshop Friday, April 27

Workshop Materials: view the list at www.cedarhurst.org OR email request to: nancy@cedarhurst.org Joye Moon will demonstrate every aspect of the pouring paint process, breaking it down into segments so everyone can understand the techniques before painting on their own. During the 3 day workshop, Joye will give each student personal attention as she teaches her own pouring paint techniques, how to divide the project into varying values, and how using masking fluid and consecutive pours can bring the painting to life.
