"Football is getting more like a basketball game." said Scott. "It's about who can be the most athletic. It's not about down-hill power anymore. It's like the Arena League.

South Carolina Gamecocks head coach Steve Spurrier still has an old-school philosophy.

running backs have been minimized and devalued. Consider the fact that, last week against the Detroit Lions, Minnesota vikings running back Adrian Peterson only rushed the ball five times in the second half. Plus, look at the way the Tennessee Titans treated Pro Bowl running back Chris Johnson during the offseason. While Johnson had to holdout to get a new contract, Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald was rewarded a contract worthy of a quarterback without any complaints. unfortunately, this is the new direction of the league. Wide receivers are now valued more than running backs. Check the recent nFL draft in order to see how running backs are viewed by the league. It has become the norm. And now, it's an acceptable part of the game.

he must put the football in the hands of heisman hopeful RB Marcus Lattimore at least 32 times a game in order to win, because he is too afraid QB Stephen Garcia is going to throw another interception if he passes the ball. Despite Spurrier's effort to keep the running game alive, it's still depressing to see a team panic on third and one, especially a professional football team. Its mind boggling to see a quarterback get sacked on fourth down and inches because coaches are afraid to run the football. This Sunday sit back and watch how many teams call time-out on third and two. And after they break out of the huddle, watch them throw an incomplete pass or interception in the ReDZOne. unbelievable. Will somebody please give the ball to the running back and let the 245 pound fullback clear-out a path for him to run? This is football isn't?

Maybe not..... This new fast pace football has not only infected the nFL, Publisher it has "spread its wings" in clyons@411sportsnews.com

Breast Cancer Action Plan

A

s I was thinking about what to write, I remembered that October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Although I’ve always been an avid supporter of the Race for the Cure, especially after watching a friend’s mom lose her battle, this year is a little more significant, because this is the first year I scheduled my own appointment to have a mammogram. I wasn’t really looking forward to the procedure since I heard a few “horror” stories, but I felt it necessary and wanted to be proactive about my health as I become more “seasoned”. I also recently found out that a friend was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer in April and she’s about to go through radiation now and, unfortunately, a previous co-worker who is less than 10 years older than me is losing her battle with the disease. Incredibly, as women, I find we tend to look out for the needs of our family, loved ones, and friends, but overlook our own needs. When we create our weekly to-do list, we put ourselves closer and closer to the very bottom of the list. I remember watching my mom fix dinner for me and my brothers. She would nibble on fruit or veggies or a piece of bread while we stuffed our faces. I would worry about her, but oddly, as a mother now, I find myself doing the same thing! I make sure the kids and hubby eat to their heart’s content and I make sure they have yearly physicals. Bur for myself, I’ll eat a snack or nibble and I may skip a year or two on my physical. I go without so they can have. I guess it’s the nurturing nature God gave us, but we have to remember that if we don’t take care of ourselves, we won’t be any good for anyone else. In my research, I found there are many celebrities who have had personal struggles with breast cancer. Those who are survivors now speak out to help others who suffer from the disease.

Christina Applegate, American television actress Pat Battle, African-American news reporter and anchor for nBC news Shirley Temple Black, American Oscar-winning child actress and former united States Ambassador to Ghana and Czechoslovakia, who is said to have been (in 1973) the first famous person to publicly announce her breast cancer diagnosis nancy Brinker, American founder of the Susan G. komen for the Cure edward Brooke, African-American former u.S. So, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month, I want to use my column to challenge women to put yourselves first, be proactive, grab another woman or two, and commit to getting screened! The Susan G. komen Foundation has provided the following link to help you get started: www.komen.org/getscreened and also an action plan that gives you some simple steps you can take to make your breast health a priority: Breast Cancer Action Plan: 1. Do an honest assessment of your self-care regimen. Are you practicing breast selfawareness? Do you know what is normal for you? These are the essentials of self-care. 2. know your risk. Discuss with your family and your physician what your individual risks are. 3. educate yourself. If you're diagnosed, have a candid discussion with your doctor about options for treatment. 4. Get support. It's easy to fall off the breast-care wagon, so team with a friend or a relative or sign up for an online reminder. 5. Get screened. If you are at average risk for breast cancer, komen recommends annual mammograms starting at age 40 and continuing every year. 6. Make healthy lifestyle choices. Maintain a healthy weight, get regular exercise, don't smoke and keep alcohol consumption to a minimum. This month, make your health a priority, encourage other women to do the same, and make scheduling a mammogram your goal for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. page

e have a great core in here. our goal hasn't changed since the start of the season, and that's to win a World series." "All the way," catcher mike Napoli said. "that's what we're here to do." the tigers lead the Yankees, 2-1, in their five-game series, with Game 4 scheduled for tuesday night in Detroit and Game 5 -- if necessary -- slated for thursday in the bronx. A tigers victory and subsequent trip to the Alcs gives the rangers home-field advantage, as texas ended the regular season with one more win than Detroit. that edge could be plenty reason for the rangers to be in support of a Yankees exit, despite the fact it would bring about a meeting or two -- at the least -- with tigers ace Justin Verlander. texas was 52-29 at rangers ballpark this year, compared with a 44-37 mark on the road. In the AlDs, the rangers went 1-1 in Arlington. texas posted a 3-6 record against Detroit this season, including a 1-2

For as much trouble as the tigers gave the rangers during the regular season, the Yankees presented an even more difficult task, claiming victory in seven of the nine meetings. the rangers collected just 35 runs in the nine games, while the Yankees teed off texas' pitching staff for 62 runs. moreover, New York tallied 22 home runs, the rangers just four, and the Yankees were the only other major league team to finish the season with more long balls (222) than texas (210). but texas is no stranger to postseason play with the Yankees. the rangers entered the 2010 Alcs against New York with a 19 record and nine-game losing streak vs. the Yankees in the playoffs before defeating them in six games to advance to the World series. Perhaps, then, New York's shortcomings against the rangers last year provide the pinstripes with an extra dose of motivation. texas, though, was stung shortly after in the Fall classic by way of a Giants series victory, meaning plenty incentive exists.

In the second inning, beltre connected on a 1-0 pitch that sent a leadoff drive over the left-field wall. For his second homer, the righthanded-hitting slugger lined a ball to the opposite field on 2-1 pitch with one out in the fourth. Another rookie, matt moore, surrendered a first-pitch leadoff homer to beltre in the sixth inning, which also snapped a stretch of nine consecutive scoreless innings pitched against the rangers for moore.

WOODS Business in the News

T

iger Woods says he's happy with every part of his game as he gears up to make a rare fall start on the PGA Tour. Woods is in California for the Frys.com Open, where he will make his first start since missing the cut at the PGA Championship two months ago. The former world no. 1 didn't qualify for the PGA Tour playoffs and added the Fall Series event to gear up for next month's Australian Open and Presidents Cup. "I think I'm happy with how everything has progressed from tee to green," Woods said Wednesday. "I've got a chance to practice and work on everything, which is something that I hadn't been able to do for a while. So I have to say I'm very pleased with every facet of my game." Still trying to emerge from the sex scandal that dynamited his personal life, and injuries that have kept him off the course, Woods dropped out of the top 50 in the world rankings for the first time in almost 15 years Monday and is currently ranked 51st. On top of that, he has been trying to

FEELS GOOD AHEAD OF

RARE FALL START implement a swing change and finally feels like he has his playing instincts back. "I've kind of done all that legwork and now it's time to play. And that's where I needed to get to, which I hadn't been able to get to because I wasn't healthy enough to get there," said Woods. "And that part was frustrating because I know what I can do in the game, and I just needed the time to practice. And that's why I'm so excited about being here and playing." Woods will play in the Frys.com Open for the first time partly to get ready for next month, but also because American Presidents Cup captain Fred Couples asked him to play a little bit before the matches. Along with many of the tour's top stars, Woods doesn't generally enter Fall Series events, when the focus is mostly on players trying to make enough money to keep or earn their tour cards for the next season.

Tiger Woods made his first-ever appearance in a Fall Series event over the weekend, and tied for 30th at the Frys.com Open. Asked to played the tournament by Presidents Cup captain Fred Couples, Woods put together three straight 68s after starting with a 73. It wasn't great, because as Woods will tell you, greatness only happens when you win, and win majors. however, it was a step in the right direction. Since his 2009 car accident and subsequent divorce from his wife, elin, Woods has posted just five top-10 finishes in 22 worldwide events. he used to win five times in 22 events; now top-10s are more his style. Woods started working with Sean Foley last year and has stated in a few interviews, that he didn't always understand what Foley was trying to do with his swing. Since missing the cut at the PGA Championship in August, Woods has been working out those kinks by going old school and pounding hundreds of golf balls a day on the range. The more tournaments he plays, the faster he'll get back to winning. It has been nearly 25 months since his last PGA Tour title, and that streak will get to at least 29 months before he plays another official PGA Tour event.

NFL RECAP: Eagles, Jets Creep Toward Disaster 411 SPORTS AND ENTERTAINMENT

T

his has been a interesting first quarte of the season.

In the nFC east the eagles were supposed to be the dapper dons of the nFL. But now they are the dapper done’s of the nFL. yeah, I know, they bought the Super Bowl trophy and already posted it in their case. But, hold on, you have to play the games. and the eagles have not played the game. Wait, they did play

one game aganist St. Louis but maybe they thought that was just preseason and never started the season. The eagles are toast. Philly now has to go 9-2 to make the playoffs. That's a tall order with the Patriots, Jets, Cowboys (twice), Redskins (twice), Giants, and Bears still on the schedule. The run defense has been abysmal. The defensive scheme has been suspect. The offensive line can't protect Mike vick. And they're as prone to silly turnovers and penalties as every other Andy Reid-coached team. The Jets next two games are enormously huge. The Jets have lost three straight, but not all hope is lost. everyone expected them to get blown out by the Patriots yesterday, but they ended up playing okay and were in the game until the last two minutes. now they have Miami and San Diego at home — they need both of those games to avoid sitting with a 3-4 record going into the buy week. The Steelers are rounding into form, while the Titans aren't a true contender yet. Pittsburgh handled Tennessee with ease. nice bounceback game for them after limping through their last two games against Indy and houston. The Titans, on the other hand, can't really be a legit challenge to houston the AFC South if they're getting throttled by 21.

Cam newton is awesome. he lost again, but he looked great again. his stat line was far from Brady-esque. But he looked poised, and had his team in the game until the dying embers against a great Saints team yesterday. The 49ers are essentially in the playoffs. They're 4-1 in a division with three really bad teams. They if finish out the season at 6-5 or even 5-6, they're fine. Tebow time! Timmy started the second half against San Diego, and promptly stormed the Broncos back within two points of the Chargers. Denver eventually lost by 5, and Tebow didn't look very good throwing the ball. But expect a lot of “Tim Tebow is a winner!” talk on eSPn this week nonetheless. San Diego-Oakland is going to be a fun race. San Diego has grinded its way to a 4-1 record, while Oakland has looked much flashier at 3-2. But both teams should be in it until the end, and they play each other twice down the stretch. The Colts might fall into Andrew Luck after all. When the Colts were killing the Chiefs early yesterday, it looked like Indy might win a few games with Curtis Painter at QB. But Indy revealed their true selves in the second half, and now they sit at 0-5. Green Bay is the unquestioned no. 1 team in the nFL. They were down 14 points on the road in Atlanta. They then ripped off 25straight points to win by 11. easily the bestlooking team in the league so far.

DON'T LOOK FOR ANY NBA GAMES BEFORE CHRISTMAS DAY

I

f the nBA regular season fell down in a forest, would it make a sound? We'll find out, but probably not until late December. After two days of negotiations and no agreement on a new Collective Bargaining Agreement in sight, the nBA tonight canceled the first two weeks of the regular

season. The two sides met for seven hours today, but Stern says the two sides are "very far apart on virtually all issues." The biggest issue continues to be how the two sides will split $3.8 billion in revenue. That is a number that is certain to skyrocket when the nBA negotiates their next round of televisions deals. The season was scheduled to begin on november 15. Since the nFL avoided a lockout and has a season, most casual sports fans will be fine without the nBA until late December. For those fans, Christmas Day is often considered the true opening day in the nBA. With the typically marquee match-ups matched with the winding down of the college football and nFL seasons, that is when the nBA starts to fill the growing sports void. So look for fans to start getting restless if there is no nBA games on December 25. From that point, the league and players will have about one month to hash out an agreement and start the season.

The last (and only) time the nBA lost games due to a work stoppage (1998-99), the league played a 50-game schedule. however, that season didn't start until early February, forcing teams to often play four games a week. So it seems unlikely that the league would start a season after the first week in February. In other words, December 25 is when the nBA's clock will start ticking. The first week of February is when it will stop. Right now there is a lot pointing fingers back and forth. But we might as well get comfortable, because there probably won't be much progress until the Christmas Day games are lost.

Oklahoma City Thunder and Memphis Grizzlies are all youth-filled rosters on the rise. The development of these teams’ chemistry over an entire season is worth watching.

this Is What We Will miss this season If the NbA lockout continues:

Is this defense for real

W

hen Rob Ryan was announced as the new defensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys, the opinions seemed to fall into two general areas. One was that he was a brilliant defensive coordinator from one of the most respected coaching families in football and was just what this team needed. The other was that he had really only had one year when his team had been very good, and in the rest of his career as a DC he had gotten occasional good performances from generally overmatched units. Part of the second viewpoint was the fact that he was going to

have to make the defense work with mostly the same personnel who had been so ineffective in 2010, which did not seem to be a formula for success. After three games, it is starting to look like the first opinion was the most accurate, as he has forged a team that is second in rushing defense (yards/game) and fifth overall. (Stats from StatFox.com). And he has done it without bringing in any high profile free agents (although Jerry Jones did try). Instead, he has gotten the players to buy into his system and brought in a few unspectacular but apparently valuable players. And despite the often lamented loss of the offseason due to the evil and pernicious lockout, he has done it so much faster than many (like me) would have thought possible. One thing that was brought up frequently OctOber 2011

during the off season was that Rob did have a couple of players in DeMarcus Ware and Jay Ratliff that were arguably better than almost any of the players he had to work with in his other stops. And here, he undoubtedly caught a break when he had a third star emerge in Sean Lee. But even with three really superior talents, he still had to get the rest of the defense to work around them. This is where I think he stands out as a coach. In another life, Rob would have been one heck of a Marine Drill Instructor. The main job a DI has is to take a bunch of young, often underperforming people, and get them to do things they never thought they could do, and do them superbly. That is exactly what Ryan has managed to do. My favorite example is Always Anthony Spencer. After years of not performing up to expectations, he has suddenly emerged as the near perfect bookend to DWare, getting a sack in each of the first three games. Part of this is being in Rob's system, which I think gives him more opportunity than Wade Phillips' scheme which used him primarily as a run stopper, but I also believe that Rob has lit a fire in Anthony's belly. Another thing that caught my attention were three free agent signings. kenyon Coleman and Abram elam were brought in early to help fill some holes, and Frank Walker was picked up later as the injury bug kept felling cornerbacks. none were considered great signings, just competent. OCC put up some numbers on how the team graded out against Washington, and both elam and Coleman did well (Walker did not see much action thanks to Terence newman and Mike Jenkins both being in the game). Coleman was particularly impressive, grading behind only Ware and Ratliff on the front seven. This is, to me, a demonstration of the fact that a "just a guy" (JAG) can become a "right kind of guy" (RkG) with the right leadership and motivation. here, RkG does not refer to their moral character or off the field behavior, but to the work they put in during practice and what they leave on the field during the game. Given the history of some of the Dallas www.411spOrtsnews.cOm

veterans, it looks obvious that things have changed remarkably on this team. Last year, Jenkins was roundly criticized for giving up on some plays. This year, he is gutting out injuries because his team needs him on the field. That is what I would call a learned behavior. It is early in the season, of course, but the trends are looking very good. keg pointed out how the points given up in the fourth quarter had gone down in each of the first three games. I noted another trend. In the first two games, Sean Lee dominated the tackle stats (all numbers quoted from eSPn.go.com). Against the Jets, he had 12, and no one else had more than four. Against the 49ers, he had 11, and the next player only had five. But against the Redskins, he was credited with eight. elam and Gerald Sensabaugh each had seven, and Coleman had six. When the season started, I felt a twinge of concern that Lee was carrying so much of the load himself,

but now it looks like some of his teammates are starting to catch up to him. I think the defense is still finding itself, and it is getting better each week. It is early, but I think the question about Rob Ryan was answered. he looks like just what this team needed. page

411, GoinG 1 on 1 with Adele Givins F

or years, Adele Givens, better known as the “Queen of Comedy” has made even the most dignified critic’s side hurt from laughter. A native of Chicago, Illinois, she began her standup comedy career in the late 1980s. To date, she is known throughout the industry as being one of the most well known comedienne powerhouses. Since the early 1990s, she has graced the small screen with guest appearances on Martin, Moesha, The Steve harvey Show, and The hughleys, just to name a few. She has also appeared on the big screen. Remember the character Tricks on The Players Club (1998)? She played alongside Lisa Raye’s character Diamond, the late king of Comedy, Bernie Mac, Ice Cube, and Jamie Foxx as an unsuccessful exotic dancer. She also had a small part in Queen Latifah’s Beauty Shop (2005) as DJ helen, a radio personality who was in desperate need of a hair solution. Adele Givens was recently in the Dallas area for the urban vibe entertainment presents “The Classic Comedy explosion” at Music hall at Fair Park on September 24, 2011 hosted by fellow comedian, nephew Tommy of the Steve harvey Morning Show. 411 Sports & entertainment had the privilege to sit back stage with Adele after her hilariously funny and entertaining set.

Adele:

411: So tell us where has Adele Givens been?

Adele: you know I am still touring, just not as frequently, doing independent standup shows throughout the country. Matter of fact, I leave here and go to Cleveland or somewhere and then I wait for the next opportunity. I try not to spread myself too thin because my son is at that age where he is very active and I don’t want to miss too much of what’s going on with him because I am on the road.

Adele: On stage. I just finished working, didn’t you just see me?! no. Seriously, I have been away from the scene to be a mother. I have two teenage boys that I have been taking care of. 411: So you stepped away for a minute to take care of your family? Adele: yes. I have a son in college now and a 16 year old that’s still at home and my husband and I are waiting on him to leave the house, too. 411: So how married?

A longtime. I have been married to my husband for 20 years. he is my biggest fan and supporter. I don’t think I would have had the success I have, had I not had him to support me. And I know I wouldn’t have them kids that we taking care of.

411: So what is it like maintaining a marriage and a successful career? Adele: It’s hard work. For sure but you have to have that right person to support you and to make sure that the two of you can do what you love to do without becoming jealous of the other. Don’t get me wrong, we have had our issues. There have been days when I thought I was going to end up locked up but thank God I’m out here telling jokes and not in an orange jump suit. I don’t think I would look good in orange. What you think? 411: I can’t see it! Well thank God you are out here because I can’t see you telling jokes for newports. Ok, tell me what’s been going on outside of taking care of your family?

high demand. But as my kids got older, so did my priorities and I wanted to be around them and be involved with their lives. I didn’t have kids just to talk about you know. There’s too much other stupid sh*% going on to just wanna talk about some kids I don’t see. 411: Speaking of which, how do you get inspired to do your set. What’s your motivation? Adele: What’s my motivation? Did you just steal somebody’s line from a movie? Well, my motivation is life. Like I just said, musta not been listening, there is a lot of stupid sh*% going on in the world. So that gives me a lot to talk about when I go to the stage. not to mention I got two sons and a husband that do dumb sh*% all the time so I will always have something to talk about. Matter of fact, them three alone should give me enough stuff for the stage to last me past retirement. 411: I bet it does. Family always provides comedy for any setting. you just figured a way to get paid for it. Let’s talk movies. Do you have any upcoming projects?

411: Is it hard for you going from being in a different city every week to being in places sporadically? Adele: At first it was difficult for me because I love what I do. I was still highly recognized as a “Queen of Comedy” so I was in www.411spOrtsnews.cOm

OctOber 2011

411, GoinG 1 on 1 with Adele Givins Adele:

Movies. yes, there are a lot of movies coming out and will continue to be a lot coming out. unfortunately, I am not in any of them. I am working on reading some scripts and talking with some people about some upcoming movies.

411: Always grinding… that’s not a bad quality to have. So how can people keep up with you?

411: Anything interesting? Adele: I mean there are some interesting scripts but it seems like my people want to read the damn script more than I do. They behind the scene reading my script like they auditioning for the damn role. I have to tell them, feed me my line, don’t try to take my job!

COVER Adele: keep up with me how? If I’m in their city, come out and support me. Oh, wait. you meant like social media and all that stuff? Well, I have a Facebook page. It’s www.facebook.com/adelegivens. My son also created me a Twitter page. Its twitter.com/ readadelegivens. you know you gotta be real now. But I am not into that technology and stuff but I’m trying to get up there before something else change. 411: Well, thank you, Adele for taking the time to talk with 411 Sports & entertainment and we wish you much continued success!

411: Adele, we noticed that you are always being video recorded. Why? Adele: Because I can. no. I use the camera to show my sons and also I may be putting together a little something, something. But I’m not ready to talk about that right now. Who knows? But for right now it’s because I love to see me and I can. 411: So you are thinking about going behind the screen? Adele: I am just looking for ways to get paid. I try to find every opportunity to get money without hitting the streets because I am too much of a lady for that. 411: Do you have any other upcoming projects, concerts, or anything else that you want to share with us? Adele:

Just keep supporting me. I love what I do. I love getting on that stage and making people laugh. And the crazy thing is people laugh at what I consider to be the truth. I can release when I am on stage and talk about whatever the hell is driving me crazy and, guess what? People connect to that. They connect to people’s pain… Twisted, hmm? Let me stop. But I am looking at movies, television roles, doing more concert dates, and taking care of my family.

HE SAY/ SHE SAY

I

nitially, most people approach the topic of lying and infidelity somewhat reluctantly - driven by their curiosity or by a recent, unexpected discovery.

For better or for worse, our romantic relationships are not always as straightforward as we would like them to be. From time to time, our intimate relationships can become complicated and complex - full of contradictions and inconsistencies. When it comes to love and marriage, people expect a spouse to be completely honest. But, at the same time, everyone values their sense of freedom and privacy. So while romantic partners typically want to please each other, at other times, couples experience competing goals which can make telling the truth more difficult (see, when lovers lie). As it stands, our close relationships involve a lot of truth telling as well as some dishonesty. If love was straightforward and unchanging, that would be easy to acknowledge. But, when you take a close look at the nature of love and romance, one thing becomes clear: Love creates both happiness and heartache, opportunities and constraints, joy and sorrow. For the most part, spouses are considerate, honest and kind (see, healthy relationships). But at the same time, husbands and wives, boyfriends and girlfriends, betray those they love. unfortunately, deception comes in handy when people want to limit their partner's choices, avoid conflict or punishment, or when people want to influence their partner's behavior. And while it is not uncommon for people to lie and cheat, it is difficult to accept that one's own husband or wife might be doing so (see, cheating spouse). Who hasn't caught a boyfriend or girlfriend lying only to have him or her deny it - "I would never lie to you." not only can our close relationships sometimes cause heartache and anxiety, but it's also difficult to discuss lying and cheating out in the open. When you mention the possibility that love and betrayal might go hand-in-hand, people tend to get angry or they become defensive. We know how disheartening it is to deal with these issues. But, disheartening or not, deception and infidelity are important to understand. For example, people often wonder... Is my husband just being flirtatious or could he be tempted to cheat? When I ask my wife a question, why doesn't she look me in the eye? how come my girlfriend doesn't answer her phone? Why is my partner working so late? What's causing my boyfriend be so distant lately? Is there an innocent explanation for everything that happens? Or could you simply be reading too much into what's going on? unfortunately, the truth is not always easy to discern (see, signs of a cheating spouse). And actually having to investigate a spouse can quickly page

OctOber 2011

HE SAY/ SHE SAY turn into a never-ending challenge. More often than not, this happens because a cheating spouse will rarely admit the truth even when confronted with evidence of his or her guilt (see, how to catch a cheating spouse).

Sadly enough, some level of suspicion might actually be warranted from time to time. Research indicates that if you want to look for deception in your own life, the best place to start is close to home. Lovers often lie about their true feelings for each other, the feelings they have for others, their level of commitment, their whereabouts... And people tend to tell their most serious and consequential lies to those they love (see, what lovers lie about and secrets lovers keep). At one extreme, some husbands and wives never plan on being faithful. While millions of other husbands and wives, who never intended to commit infidelity, nevertheless, still end up doing so (calculate how closely your spouse fits the profile of someone who is likely to cheat - infidelity quiz or take our cheating spouse survey). And to make matters more complicated, detecting deception, or infidelity, is never as easy as people think (see, detecting deception). not only can it be difficult to investigate a spouse, but doing so also raises a host of relational, ethical, and legal concerns - issues which are important to consider before starting to monitor a spouse (see, gps cheating spouse). In any case, most of the lies lovers tell go undetected because people downplay the risks that a partner would lie and most people over estimate their ability to spot their partner's lies (see, tell if a lover is lying). For the most part, the strategy of "assuming the best" works fairly well, until the day comes when it does not, and with little warning or preparation we have to confront the reality that our close relationships are not exactly what they appear to be. eventually, almost everyone will catch a partner in a lie. Often, it amounts to uncovering nothing more than catching a spouse telling a small, white lie. And of course, sometimes it can involve something much more serious such as infidelity (see, why men cheat and why women cheat). When deception is uncovered, even finding out the truth about a small, white lie can lead to problems such as increased suspicion and doubt. If your spouse is willing to bend the truth about something trivial, what about something that really matters? And when something much more serious is uncovered, people have a difficult time coping with what they have learned and dealing with the fact that someone close to them has betrayed their trust (see, steps for rebuilding trust). It’s not so much that coming to terms with deception will solve all of the problems that people are going to encounter, but it will certainty help to reduce the stress, anxiety, and uncertainty that occurs when deception comes to light.

Top Ten Lists Featuring African Americans Published on February 11th 2010 by Leon Shepherd

A

s I was compiling my top 10 list of comics, every comedian in the world popped into my head. So with such a huge list to choose from, I had to come up with a selection process to narrow the list down to ten. The criteria for this list included being able to be funny on stage performing stand-up, as well as being funny on television and in movies. Other factors included were c.d. sales, and longevity. I’m sure there are some of you who might feel that there is a name missing from the list, or you might have a difference of opinion regarding the order of the list. If so, feel free to share your thoughts, comments and opinions. 10. sinbad 1956 – I’m sure some of you may be saying, “sinbad? How did he make the list?” Well, sinbad made the list because of his ability to do something many comedians are unable to do, and that is to be clean and funny at the same time. his bio: Funny man Sinbad has been in the comic business for over two decades now and is still going strong. having toured the country several times over and appearing in stand up comedy venues all over the globe, Sinbad is a veteran to the game. his style, being based around that of clean humor, can be appreciated by audiences of all ages and still remains humorous without the ever popular sexual and fart preferences of most comics today. he remains snappy and quick witted throughout his entire performance and is certain to conjure laughs from all who view his routines. he has acted in over 15 different movies, as well as performed roles in over 20 different television programs. 9. bernie mac 1957 – 2008 bernie mac had a tV show that was original and d i f f e r e n t . throughout his show he would look and talk straight into the c a m e r a , “America…”. his bio: Bernard Jeffrey McCullough (October 5, 1957 – August 9, 2008), better known by his

stage name Bernie Mac, was an actor and comedian. Born and raised on the South Side of Chicago, Mac gained popularity as a stand-up comedian. he joined comedians Steve harvey, Cedric the entertainer, and D. L. hughley as The Original kings of Comedy. After briefly hosting the hBO show Midnight Mac, Mac appeared in several films in smaller roles. his most noted film role was as Frank Catton in the remake Ocean’s eleven and the titular character of Mr. 3000. he was the star of The Bernie Mac Show, which ran from 2001 through 2006, earning him two emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. his other films included starring roles in Booty Call, Friday, The Players Club, head of State, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, Bad Santa, Guess Who, Pride, Soul Men, and Madagascar: escape 2 Africa.

Claiming that he was always “flipped out”, Wilson’s barracks mates gave him his famous nickname. During the 1960s, Wilson became a regular at the Apollo Theater in harlem and was a favorite guest on The Tonight Show, Laugh-In, and The ed Sullivan Show. In 1970, Wilson got his own television program, The Flip Wilson Show, debuting on nBC. he played host to many African-American entertainers, including The Jackson Five, and performed in comedy sketches. The Flip Wilson Show aired through 1974, generating high ratings and popularity among viewers and winning strong critical acclaim, with an unprecedented 11 emmy Award nominations during its run, winning two. Wilson also won a Golden Globe award for Best Actor in a Television Series.

8. steve Harvey 1957 –

6. Dave chapelle 1973

In addition to having a very funny show, “the steve Harvey show,” Harvey remains the best dressed out of all the comedians. his bio: Broderick Steven “Steve” harvey is an actor, comedian, entertainer, and radio personality. he is best known as the star of the WB sitcom The Steve harvey Show, and as one of the four comedians featured in the Spike Lee film The Original kings of Comedy. Currently, he is the host of The Steve harvey Morning Show, a nationally syndicated radio program. he is also the author of Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man: What Men Really Think About Love, Relationships, Intimacy, and Commitment, which was released in March 2009. he began doing stand-up comedy in the mid-1980s, and was a finalist in Second Annual Johnnie Walker national Comedy Search in 1989, eventually leading to a long stint as host of It’s Showtime at the Apollo, succeeding Mark Curry in that role. his success as a stand-up comedian led to a starring role on the ABC show Me and the Boys in 1994. he would later star on the WB network show, The Steve harvey Show, which ran from 1996 to 2002.

Dave chappelle is a very talented comedian and writer. his bio: David “Dave” Chappelle is a comedian, screenwriter, television/film producer and actor. In 2003, he became widely known for his popular sketch comedy television series, Chappelle’s Show. Comedy Central ranked him forty-third in its list of the 100 greatest standup comedians. In 2003, Chappelle introduced his own weekly sketch comedy show on Comedy Central called Chappelle’s Show. The show parodied many aspects of American culture including racial stereotypes, politics and pop culture. Along with comedy skits, the show also featured musical performances by mostly hip-hop and soul artists. Chappelle’s pointed social and political commentary quickly helped the show garner critical and commercial success as well as controversy. Chappelle received two emmy nominations for the show.

7. Flip Wilson 1933 – 1998 I’m sure many of you are saying, “Flip Wilson?” “Who is that?” Well, Flip Wilson was the very first black comedian with a very successful television show. his Bio: Clerow Wilson Jr., known professionally as Flip Wilson, was an American comedian and actor. Time magazine featured his image on their cover and named him “Tv’s first black superstar”. his outgoing personality and funny stories made him very popular; he was even asked to tour military bases to cheer up other servicemen.

5. redd Foxx 1922-1991 Funny comedian with a hit tV show, “sanford and son”, which ranks in the top ten as one of the funniest tV shows ever. his Bio: John elroy Sanford better known by his stage name Redd Foxx, was a comedian and actor, best known for his starring role on the sitcom Sanford and Son. Foxx gained notoriety with his nightclub act (considered by the standards of the time to be raunchy). his standup performances were later released as “party” albums and became very popular. he was also one of the first black comics to play to white audiences on the Las vegas Strip. r. Make you dance is doing it again. Since 2007, we’ve been on the floor with the “Cupid Shuffle”. now, here comes another smash hit, “Do My Ladies Run this Party”. Listening to this song can’t be done in the car because you might just want to start dancing. This song is upbeat and has a clap and a bounce in it like no other. "I don't want to be the next Chris Brown. I'm not the next Omarion or the next usher," says the Lafayette, Louisiana native. "I'm Cupid. I'm the guy that comes on the stage and yells and screams and sings and performs and sweats. I'm the guy that brings the fun to kill the monotony of all the bad stuff that's going on these days”. Cupid's breakthrough first single, "Cupid Shuffle," has already sparked a nationwide sensation, with everyone taking to the floor to do the brand new dance that's sure to be swinging across America for a long time. Within weeks of the track's early 2007 release, literally hundreds of videos appeared online featuring Cupid lovers of all kinds - boys and girls, moms and dads, even one-eyed grannies - showing off their shuffle. "I'm not stopping until I get the president to do the Shuffle," Cupid laughs, but the drive and determination he's shown thus far suggests he's only half-joking. Born Bryson Bernard, Cupid discovered a passion for music in the church where his father served as pastor, singing in choir and learning piano at 15. Like any red-blooded American teenager, he was also deeply interested in sports, playing high school football, and ultimately receiving a trackand-field scholarship to university of Louisiana @ Lafayette. Though he was a valued member of the school's Ragin' Cajun Track Team, Cupid soon decided that music was his truest passion. he left the squad and formed a vocal group with a few friends, dubbing it Fasho! The group - which later changed its name to Fifth element - became a local favorite, performing at fraternity/sorority parties as well as talent shows throughout the region. Alas, personal and musical differences split the group apart and Cupid embarked on his solo journey. "I decided to go off on my own," he says, "I just felt like things weren't moving fast enough." It was around this time that the gifted young performer received the angelic moniker by which

he is now known. As he embarked on his solo career, his set was consistently highlighted by his show-stopping rendition of 112's 1996 hit, "Cupid." "People that didn't know my name, they'd say, 'That's the guy that sings 'Cupid,'" he recalls. "Before long, people were just saying, 'hey Cupid…" and it kinda stuck. "nobody calls me Bryson anymore," Cupid adds with a laugh. "Sometime I hear it and I don't even answer, I've got to stop and remember my real name." Working the talent show circuit honed Cupid's considerable vocal chops and stage presence. he soon began writing his own material, combining his love of R&B with the multitude of varied hiphop sounds that were rocking the region. "Lafayette is such a big melting pot," he says. "you got the screw coming from Texas, the bounce and party music of new Orleans, the krunk in Atlanta. I heard all of that and I wanted to blend those flavors into one. When you put all these things together, it's a Down South R&B movement." With its high-energy new Orleans Bounce beat, Cupid's self-released first single, "Do ya Thang," became one of 2001's biggest regional hits, leading to the release of his self-titled debut CD in early 2002. he continued to perform nightly, singing anywhere and everywhere he could, from opening for such blues legends as Bobby Blue Bland and Lee Williams, to performing at talent shows, birthday parties, weddings, funerals, "anywhere they needed somebody to sing." "I was touching so many families, that without even knowing it, I was building up my fanbase," he says. "When you sing for somebody's grandfather, they appreciate you for it and then support your music when it comes out." Cupid's second self-released album, 2005's "The kInG OF DOWn SOuTh R&B" - which included another regional smash in "Swing Around The Rosey" - saw him adding elements of country and blues to his musical gumbo, resulting in a further widening of his already diverse audience. With his inimitable sound winning over music lovers young and old, the album saw Cupid gaining airplay throughout the region, from Florida to Texas. Which brings us to January 2007, as Cupid

was ready to release his third album "TIMe FOR A ChAnGe." Mere days before putting the CD out, he got the call inviting him to sign with Atlantic Records - for six decades, the home to the most innovative, compelling, and enduring artists in soul and R&B. Cupid immediately caught a flight to Los Angeles and set to work on what would become his major-label debut, "TIMe FOR A ChAnGe." The work ethic he'd learned running his own business immediately came to the fore, with five new tracks recorded in his first four days in studio. "When you're used to paying for it out your own pocket," he notes, "you learn to conserve time." Given the opportunity to spread his wings, Cupid chose to team up with a variety of gifted producers, including Rich Skillz (a recent Grammy Award-recipient for his work on Ludacris' smash, "ultimate Satisfaction"), Dewayne Swan, the LAbased team, Stereotypes (Marques houston, neyo, keyshia Cole), and his longtime friend/collaborator Brandon nezey - aka Mr. Phat. "My brain is only so big and I only have so many ideas," Cupid humbly admits. "I can only think so far. Working with these guys, they're always saying, 'Check this out.' I'm real open to working with such talented guys. It was great to be able to learn from a lot of great people." With his boundless creativity and equally unlimited spirit, Cupid wants nothing less than to touch as many people as possible. To achieve that goal, this superstar-in-the-making refuses to get caught in the overly-formatted pigeonhole that traps so many of today's artists. "I don't want to be 'neo-soul' or 'classic R&B' or anything like that," Cupid says. "I'm just a musician that makes a lot of fun music. I never want to close the door on anything. People ask me, 'What's 'Cupid Shuffle,' is it R&B, is it pop?' I'm like, 'It's just a good song.' When you're dancing to it, you don't say, 'hmm, is this blues? Is this R&B? Is this for the old or is this for the young?' no, it's just a good song. And at the end of the day, that's all that matters."

him the nickname of “America’s Dad”. 1. richard Pryor 1940 – 2005 richard Pryor is the funniest comedian I have ever seen. I was fortunate to see Pryor perform live twice. And I must say the experience is something I will never forget. Pryor had the audience laughing non-stop for 90 minutes. As I looked around, people in the audience, myself included, were bent over clutching their stomachs from Pryor’s jokes and facial expressions; while others were wiping tears from their eyes from laughing so hard. richard Pryor is without a doubt the funniest comedian that ever lived. his Bio: Richard Franklin Lennox Thomas Pryor III (December 1, 1940 – December 10, 2005) was a stand-up comedian, actor, and writer. Pryor was known for uncompromising examinations of racism and topical contemporary issues, which employed colorful, vulgar, and profane language and racial epithets. he reached a broad audience with his keen observations and storytelling style. he is widely regarded as one of the most important stand-up comedians ever. Jerry Seinfeld called

Pryor “The Picasso of our profession”; Bob newhart has called Pryor “the seminal comedian of the last 50 years.” his body of work includes the concert movies and recordings Richard Pryor: Live and Smokin’ (1971), That “n’s” Crazy (1974), Is It Something I Said? Pryor won an emmy Award in 1973, and five Grammy Awards in 1974, 1975, 1976, 1981, and 1982. In 1974, he also won two American Academy of humor awards and the Writers Guild of America Award. In 2004, Pryor was voted #1 on Comedy Central’s list of the 100 Greatest Stand-ups of All Time. On December 10, 2005, Pryor suffered a cardiac arrest in encino, California. he was taken to a local hospital after his wife’s attempts to resuscitate him failed. he was pronounced dead at 7:58 AM. his widow Jennifer was quoted as saying, “At the end, there was a smile on his face.”
