“He wondered if he really was capable of it. Then he thought what a thrill it would be to create something from nothing; to see, one day in the future, a new church here where now there was nothing but rubble, and to say: I made this. -Ken Follett, The Pillars of the Earth

BEN EPPS PLAZA Athens, GA
The goal of this project is to convert a small, underutilized parking lot in downtown Athens into an urban plaza for public use. The focal point of the design is the water feature running through the site. It begins against the building, then runs beneath iron
grates, allowing pedestrians to walk over the water while still seeing it beneath their feet. From the fountain on the middle level the water branches out again, thus providing continuity in the entire area.
WINDWARD PARK Alpharetta, GA
This is a design for a mixed-use community off of Windward Parkway in Alpharetta, Georgia. There were specific requirements for this, including several types of residential buildings, community facilities, a dog
park, parking, and space for retail. The biggest challenge was to find a way to integrate the different building types so that a truly mixed-use community could be formed, rather than having the housing separate.
LAKE MERRITT WATERFRONT PLAZA AND STREETSCAPE Oakland, CA
The goal of this design is to revitalize Lake Merritt’s waterfront, which is currently not pedestrian friendly, although the lake itself offers many amenities. The design seeks to improve the existing waterfront plaza and provide safer pedestrian access. The new streetscape features a wider central median, allowing for more
vegetation than currently, as well as an additional pedestrian and bike pathway. The focal point of the plaza is the fountain, visible from the main approach. Two of the three gracefully curved overlooks feature pergolas for shade, while the third provides tables for waterside picnics.
BAXTER STREET - MLC CORRIDOR REDESIGN Athens, GA
The goal of this design was to redesign the corridor beginning on Baxter Street by the dorms and ending where Tate Plaza meets Sanford Stadium. The redesign for this sequence of spaces seeks to improve pedestrian accessibility and safety, and provide a more aesthetically pleasing, unified, and functional space for students, faculty, staff, and visitors in the center of the University of Georgia’s campus. The concept for this design comes from the university’s most iconic symbol since 1856: the Arch.
Therefore, the forms in the plaza are semicircles, or arches. The curved forms of the sidewalk both help with pedestrian traffic by bringing people from the crosswalk outside of Bolton towards the MLC, and provide many alternative pathways, rather than just one, providing visual interest to the pedestrians. The Arch is also very symmetrical, so symmetry is used throughout the design. The new design also improves the plaza by adding water features, pergolas, and level changes.
INVENTORY AND ANALYSIS
EMORY UNIVERSITY Atlanta, GA
I have worked as an intern for Emory University’s Exterior Services Department for their Landscape Architect and their Director of Exterior Services for the past three summers and I am currently still working for them part time from school. Emory has given me many opportunities to learn different aspects of landscape architecture. I have created about five planting plan sketches for them, some of which have already been implemented, and some
of which will be implemented this year. I have also designed several graphics for their new recycling program, including a logo for their uniforms, some infographics for their website, and some fliers advertising the new waste policy. As well, I have had the opportunity to sit in on client meetings, see construction on campus, and work in an office environment, as well as learn about managing a university campus.
CHÂTEAU DE BRECY Normandy, France
I worked in France as an intern this summer. I lived at the château pictured below for four weeks and worked on the gardens. I mostly did weeding, pruning, and trimming topiary, and I also learned a little bit about estate management. The
château is privately owned, but open to the public, so I interacted with visitors to the château in French, as well as with the other gardeners and the owner of the château.
