Summer 2010

Summertime Storm Preparedness Checklist Family Emergency Plan: q Know your home’s vulnerability to storm surges, wind, and flooding q Locate a safe room or the safest areas in your home q Determine the closest evacuation route from your home q Have a plan for your pets if there is a need to evacuate q Take a First Aid and/or CPR class

Sure, we’ll take the year-round Florida sunshine over the northern snow any day, all the while remaining well aware that into each life a little rain must fall! The summer storm season is upon us and it is in everyone’s best interest to be as informed and prepared as possible. Creating a family emergency plan and organizing a supply kit are two actions which will put you a step ahead in the event of dangerous weather (see checklist at right). It is also important to assure you properly secure your home. Five critical areas to

protect and reinforce are: the roof, straps, shutters, doors, and garage doors. If your home happens to suffer damage following a storm, contact your insurance company and file a claim as soon as possible. It is also recommended that you take photographs and/or video of the damage as a means of assisting with the claims processing procedure. For additional information, there are a variety of online resources available that you can consult. To access, simply type “storm preparedness” in your Internet browser’s search function and click.

Helpful Advice on Beating Back-to-School Anxiety K-5 Kids Need to Talk Talk about it: Talk with your elementary age children about their excitement, stressing the benefits (seeing their friends, playing sports, etc.).

The transition into a new school year can be a time of excitement...and stress. Children as well adults can become anxious, irritable or depressed by this major change. The trick to fighting the backto-school anxiety is to start preparing well ahead of the first day of school. Dr. Dan Jolivet, a licensed clinical psychologist and Vice President of Clinical Services with Magellan Behavioral Health, shares how:

Give them some control: Be firm that they do have to go to school, but give them control over some simple choices, like buying or bringing lunch or riding the bus or their bike to school.

Teens Want You to Listen Keep communication lines open: Teens want you to listen to their back-to-school concerns, but not judge. Do everything possible to keep the lines of communication open at this critical age. Look for patterns: A wild new hairdo? No problem. Purple hair AND scary new

friends AND a drop in grades? Now it’s time to worry.

Adult Students Also Need Encouragement Focus on your goals: Remind yourself why you are going back to school (better job, more money, etc.). Remember that you’re not alone: Remind yourself that other “non-traditional students” have made it through this, and that it’s normal to be a little anxious or fearful. Summer is Grilling Time! – Savory Chicken Burgers with Pesto Mayonnaise Ken Haedrich, a cookbook author and Disney® “FamilyFun” contributor came up with this extra juicy burger that’s made with ground chicken. Pesto, used both in the burgers and in the special sauce, adds a savory flavor to his delicious version of a cookout classic. –––– INGREDIENTS –––– FOR THE BURGERS • 1-1/2 pounds ground chicken • 3/4 cup grated sharp cheddar or 1/2 cup grated parmesan • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1/4 teaspoon ground pepper • 1/3 cup mayonnaise • 2 tablespoons pesto • Oil for brushing the burgers • 6 burger rolls • Lettuce and sliced tomatoes FOR THE PESTO MAYONNAISE • 1/2 cup mayonnaise • 2 tablespoons pesto

–––– INSTRUCTIONS –––– 1. Line a medium-size baking sheet with plastic wrap and set it aside. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground chicken, cheese, salt, and pepper, gently tossing the mixture with your hands or a large fork until evenly blended. 2. In a small bowl, mix the mayonnaise and pesto, then add it to the ground chicken mixture and combine until evenly blended. Shape the meat into six 1/2-inch thick patties, placing each one on the lined baking sheet as you go. Cover the burgers with plastic wrap and refrigerate them for at least 30 minutes to firm them. (Note: The patties will be softer than traditional hamburgers.) 3. While the meat is chilling, prepare the grill and make the pesto mayonnaise (just combine the ingredients in a small bowl). Then brush one side of each of the burgers with a little oil and place them on the grill, oiled side down. Lightly brush oil on the other side of the burgers and cook them for 5 minutes on each side, turning once, or until the meat is no longer pink inside. 4. Serve the burgers on the rolls, dressed with the lettuce, tomatoes, and pesto mayonnaise. Makes 6 burgers. Community News GREETINGS from your VillageWalk Sales Team. Summer has arrived, the temperature outside is hot, and so are VillageWalk new home sales. This month marks an incredible milestone for our community, as we just sold our 600th home within VillageWalk!

Ed and Joanne Pruitt are very proud to be one of VillageWalk’s newest neighbors and we couldn’t be more thrilled to have them here! Ed and Joanne are from New Jersey, but have family in Orlando and have been visiting for quite some time. Though they had been discussing different retirement locations, Orlando wasn’t initially their first choice. However, after considering the ease of traveling in and out of our local airports, the many amazing Orlando attractions and discovering the beauty of VillageWalk, they knew that Orlando was the place they wanted to call home. The soon approaching arrival of their second grandchild helped, too! Being huge Penn State fans, Ed and Joanne were in Orlando for the bowl game in January when they decided to come by and see VillageWalk for themselves. Ed was immediately captivated by the layout of the community, the waterways, VillageWalk’s landscaping and our whole approach to resort-style living. Ed and Joanne plan to spend their winter months in our warm Florida climate before heading back up north. Please join us in welcoming Ed and Joanne to VillageWalk! We have had a wonderful time establishing our amazing community since November 2005. Ed and Joanne are just one of the many families we have met over the years that make VillageWalk such a great place to live. It is an awesome experience to see the joy in people’s life as they make the decision to move to VillageWalk. If you know of any friends or family members moving to the Orlando area, please don’t be shy ––– bring them by our sales office and we’ll make their dream come true!

–––– VillageWalk –––– ACTIVITIES & EVENTS Whether it’s regularly scheduled exercise and fitness classes, special monthly activities such as family movie nights, poker in the cafe, bingo games and bunco, or periodic community events, there’s always something going on to keep our VillageWalk residents as busy as they want to be.
