PROJECT BACKGROUND

MentorAbility is a national supported employment initiative that provides an opportunity for education and awareness to be shared between employers and people with disabilities in communities large and small throughout all Canadian provinces and territories. National Disability Mentoring Day is officially the first Wednesday in October but as a CASE (Canadian Association of Supported Employment) member, you can implement MentorAbility year round. www. supportedemployment.ca MentorAbility is a mentoring experience in which job seekers with disabilities (Protégés) are matched with individual mentors (employers or business leaders) – to explore career opportunities and what they need to get ahead in their desired field of interest. People with disabilities (Protégés) who are actively seeking employment are welcome to participate and become matched with a mentor who is working in that specific career area of interest. Protégés will submit an application to their local coordinator who will then work to facilitate a placement opportunity.

promote the employment of people with disabilities, learn more about individual disability experiences, recognize talent and potential, develop lasting relationships with disability community leaders, tap into a pool of potential future employees and demonstrate community leadership. Employers can get involved by encouraging employees and managers to serve as volunteer mentors. This booklet is an example of the matches made this year, 2015, during the National Disability Mentoring Day in British Columbia. The shared learnings from the day were evidenced by the ongoing relationships that were built between all the participants. Any individual business leader who is interested in meeting a talented and motivated student or job seeker with disabilities is welcome to become a mentor. Mentors are working professionals who can dedicate time during mentoring day to meet and spend time with their Protégé. MentorAbility provides private businesses, non-profit organizations and public sector employers with an opportunity to help

ASSANTE WEALTH MANAGEMENT

Karen has been working as a Self Advocate Office Assistant with the local CLBC office in Abbotsford for over 8 years. Her job entails typing up minutes for meetings, answering phones, filing documents and greeting visitors. Karen works at CLBC 3 hours per week. Karen would like to work more but currently there is only enough work for the three hours. It was suggested by the Employment Specialist Karen has been working with that she consider other offices to work in as her skills are very transferrable. Karen agreed to try a visit through the MentorAbility program to Assante Wealth Management. She spent the afternoon with Marlys Reitsma, the full time receptionist at Assante. Karen helped with the mail, and watched how Marlys took care of visitors who were there for their appointments with financial advisors. Karen had a tour of the office and met a number of the advisors and their support staff. By the end of the day, Karen said that she could see herself working in an office like this because it was a very peaceful atmosphere and the staff were all very friendly. From this experience, Karen is willing to consider other office positions to give her more employment opportunities in the future.

MATHEW MENTOR

MARGARET STENERSEN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Matthew loves books. When he came to the employment program he is in, he made it very clear that he wanted to work in a library or a book store. Matthew’s Employment Specialist took him to meet the Principal and the Librarian of Margaret Stenersen Elementary School in Abbotsford. They needed someone to organize their books so that the Librarian could spend more time with the students. Through the MentorAbility program, Matthew spent a morning in the Library and immediately started organizing the books by series and by editions. Matthew did a few shifts to learn the ropes in the library and then was hired on at $11.00 per hour to come in to organize the library. The Principal and the Librarian have both commented how much the school has benefited from Matthews diligence. The books are easy to find and library is always neat and tidy. The Librarian has much more time to work with the students to read stories and teach lessons. The school is a French Immersion School so there is a complete section of French books. Matthew has even learned how to categorize and organize the French books in the library. Matthew is gaining valuable experience in working in a library which he will be able to use to gain further employment at other schools or in other libraries.

SIMRAN MENTOR

NEW BEGINNINGS

Simran met with the Supervisor of the New Beginnings program in late October of 2015. New Beginnings is a program where young Mothers wanting to complete their high school education can come and take classes and have their children looked after while they are in class. Simran is very interested in working in child care and would like some day to enter the Early Childhood Education Program at University of the Fraser Valley. Simran spent three hours on site on November 2 and helped out with the toddlers. Maria and her staff realized quite quickly that Simran would be a valuable asset to their program, so they offered her a permanent volunteer position on Monday mornings. The volunteer hours are a prerequisite for entering the ECE program and Simran is gaining valuable experience along the way. As well, through contacts she has made at New Beginnings, Simran found out about the Responsible Adult Course which is starting in February 2016 and hopes to complete in March of 2016. Once complete, Simran will be able to work in after school daycare centres. All of this has been generated from one short three hour shift as a volunteer through the MentorAbility program.

MAPLE RIDGE CHRYSLER

Maple Ridge Chrysler is an award winning dealership that is family oriented. Chad’s interest has always been in cars. His knowledge of cars is impressive so a dealership was an obvious choice for the MentorAbility initiative. Back in Motion approached the management of Maple Ridge Chrysler on several occasions to determine if this would be a good match and to discuss a wide range of tasks that Chad is interested in. After a few discussions, it was decided that the match would work well and it would be best to have Chad do various interesting tasks. Jace, shop foremen, mentored Chad in the shop for the morning and car washing for the afternoon. Jace, Chad and the other staff worked together to accomplish the goals for the day. One special skill that Chad learned was how to wash black cars without leaving streaks and spots. Both Jace and Chad enjoyed the experience and Chad has become even more passionate about pursuing a career in the automotive industry.

DAVID MENTOR

AVIA EMPLOYMENT

David frequently talked about the sports games he played that were produced by EA Games. He loved to talk about his favourite sports teams and quoted many statistics on the players. When the opportunity came to be mentored at EA games, it was a natural fit. His mentor, Simon, was very engaging and invited David to play the new version of Plants vs Zombies. Although he was not familiar with that game, he was a quick learner and was able to identify glitches. The 10 or so bugs he found were snipped and recorded for revision. David enjoyed learning about all aspects of producing a game and bringing it to market. Simon gave him a tour of the production process and David learned about the production teams in Canada and other parts of the world. Seeing how the game is created was an exceptional experience. David’s love for video games increased even more since he saw how a game is made. He would love to work in the sports game industry.

CASSANDRA MENTOR

SEW IN’ PRESSED

Cassandra met with Kandis Lord, owner of Sew In’ Pressed Sewing and Seamstress, on two occasions. At first they spent time discussing each other’s sewing interests and how Kandis became a business owner. Cassandra shared her experience with sewing and expressed her interest in starting a sewing business. Kandis was impressed with Cassandra’s creative ideas and experience, so she offered her a few suggestions on how to get started. One of her suggestions was to start a YouTube Channel where Cassandra can create projects through mini tutorials. Cassandra learned that she could earn money by building a large amount of YouTube followers that subscribe to her page; it also helps create local clientele by getting her name and skills out in the community. Kandis also suggested that Cassandra start by creating products that she can sell at craft markets. Cassandra was excited to learn about these self employment strategies that will help her get a home based business rolling.

The second mentor day quickly approached and Cassandra arrived with her sweater ready to get creative. During this visit the two of them focused on detaching the arms from the sweater to make the leg warmers, then sewing the edges,cutting the pattern for the toque and sewing it as well. Cassandra showed Kandis up on her one handed sewing skills! Once again Kandis admired the skills and knowledge Cassandra has. Kandis and Cassandra have made plans to keep in touch and do sewing together again in the near future as it’s not often they meet like minded people with similar interest.

Plans were made to up cycle a sweater into a matching toque and leg warmers during their next visit. Cassandra was thrilled about this idea.

CHANCE MENTOR

GREATER VANCOUVER ZOO

We arrived and met Barbara the Mentor for The Greater Vancouver Zoo. She explained about how it’s her job to educate on animals and the care in the zoo. Barbara took us to the train to experience all the animals in their habitats. I realized that all the animals’ habitats were spacious and they were all well taken care of. I didn’t realize that they have free running birds and that Flamingo’s turn a pink color from what they eat.

Dave is very passionate and knowledgeable about all the animals he cares for and what they need. I would like to thank Barbara, Dave and Angela for a great mentorship experience I will never forget!

Barbara came and met us at the train and then took us to my favorite part of the zoo, the vivarium. She introduced us to Dave who is the keeper of the vivarium. It is very warm in the vivarium because of the care needed of the reptiles. Dave showed me all of the animals and let me hold a turtle, hissing cock roach, and Milky the snake whom I know wanted to come home with me, she was going into my jacket the whole time I was holding her. Dave told me that it is hard to get into zoo’s to work and it takes a lot of schooling. Dave said it was very good to volunteer. He suggested that I become an ambassador at the zoo. You would research about the reptiles and then when people come to the zoo you can talk to people all about them. Volunteering and being an ambassador is the best way to learn and see if it’s something you want to do.

STAR 98.3

Today I met with staff at the radio station (Star 98.3). I was introduced to Teresa who was the Program Director, Scott and Lisa who are the Radio Hosts and Mike Hellinger, News Director. I was able to sit in with Scott and Lisa and listen to them record their work. They were making new skits and adding songs for their show. I listened to Scott and Lisa talk to the general public when they phoned in to win prizes and I was shown how the keyboard worked with all of the sounds and gadgets.

We finished the tour with having some great pictures. Scott mentioned that we should get together and go golfing. The staff offered for me to come back and see them any time and they would like updates of my future endeavors. This was a great morning filled with great people and a great experience looking into my future possibilities. Thank you Star 98.3 for all the feedback and information and making my MentorAbility such a positive one.

Lisa explained some of her job requirements and how much technology has changed in the last ten years. She informed me that they once used cassettes, am tracks and records. I was confused to what these were and it must have showed on my face, we all had a laugh about this. Mike works at three other radio stations that are under the same umbrella, I didn’t realise that they were all owned under Rodgers Broadcasting. I spoke into the mike and made a recording to see how deep my voice was. I was not able to read from the computer, it was easier speaking without a script. Mike mentioned that I would make a great Radio Host as my deep voice would interest the listeners.

JACQUIE MENTOR

CHILLIWACK SCHOOL OF PERFORMING ARTS (CSOPA)

Jacquie’s experience with CSOPA was everything she’s dreamed of and more. Her first visit with Artistic Director Lisa Braun was quite nostalgic for Jacquie, as she recognized several of the props and costumes from the shows she had seen and from her past experience with the CSOPA Stages program in Middle School. Lisa invited Jacquie to participate on two different occasions, once for a tap rehearsal and once for a stage rehearsal. She was thrilled to partake in some tap choreography along side of her Mentor and to get her creative juices flowing during an acting warm up game. Jacquie was eager to learn, and be a part of what they were doing and she fit right in to the rehearsals. Jacquie’s passion for theatrical arts was clearly evident as her eyes lit up each time she entered the rehearsal area, seeing all the young performers preparing for their big show. During the stage rehearsal Jacquie was pleased to sit at the front stage with her Mentor Lisa and the Performance Director. She observed as they performed each scene and made changes to the script, stage layout and timing. In all, this was an extremely fun, creative and meaningful experience for Jacquie. She made a positive connection with her Mentor Lisa and they were excited to invite her to be a guest on opening night of Mary Poppins, so that she can see the final product of all the rehearsals.

Upon arrival Joy had the opportunity to meet Christina who showed her around and gave her a quick tour. Christina took Joy to the upper floor where some people were participating in an Activity Group Session. The activities were geared to body health and movement and Joy was able to sit in and observe the activities. The participants would kick and/or throw a ball back and forth to the Activity Coordinator. The Activity Coordinator had a lot of energy and worked to keep the participants engaged. Next Joy had the opportunity to ask Christina questions about the different tasks required to work here. She also spoke with Sneha, the Volunteer Coordinator as they are interested in Joy volunteering with them.

Mike was able to observe a family portrait photography session. During this session he saw the use of different backgrounds and props as well as various poses for pictures. He also was able to observe the customer interaction component of photography. Neda was very receptive to Mike’s questions and took the time to answer his questions thoughtfully and comprehensively. She spent some time explaining the types of equipment needed for portrait photography. Mike and Neda also discussed different aspects of photography such as lighting, camera settings, editing, and customer interaction. She took pictures with multiple camera settings in order to show the differences between settings and showed him where to look when looking through the lens. Neda was also able to provide Mike with some advice as he moves forward in the world of photography. She gave him some helpful tips such as watching informative YouTube videos and how to market photography packages. Mike felt more confident after witnessing the photography process. He achieved his goal through having his questions answered and was given answers to questions he hadn’t even thought of.

SHAW CABLE

Karle is a kind and gentle young man. He is currently employed with Thrifty Foods Broadmead and is well known for his customer service (he has already earned 3 smile pins since he started there in November of 2013). Karle loves movies, television and video games. He has talked about acting in the past and was very interested in what goes on behind the scenes of a television production. Karle’s day began with meeting Karen Elgersma from Shaw Cable at the event she would be covering, the Ready,Willing and Able Employer Engagement Breakfast at the Hotel Grand Pacific in downtown Victoria. Karen was reporting for Shaw TV’s show, go! (South Vancouver Island). Karen discussed what they would be doing and let Karle know that she would be interviewing him on camera! Karle was delighted and the end result aired the week of October 19th, 2015. Karle observed Karen while she interviewed several employer champions, employment service providers, and employees. He was able to see how Karen prepped interviewees and how a series of interviews come together to create coverage of an event. Karle came away from his MentorAbility experience with a renewed appreciation of what it takes to create an interesting and engaging television production and his online interview is something he can look back on with pride! A job well done!

JAMES MENTOR

CODENAME

James is a creative young man currently employed as a Dairy Clerk at Save On Foods. He has a love of all things computers and gaming, and was fortunate to find these passions matched with a Mentor-Ability Day at Codename Entertainment in Victoria, BC. Codename are a local game development studio that have created several popular titles for the computer, games such as Egg Breaker Adventures, Crusaders of the Lost Idols, and Bush Whacker.

James came away from his time at Codename with a better realization of the impressive ability of the artists employed in the game industry, and is going to practice his skill on the standard test drawing template given to artists seeking employment with Codename. Either way, James is looking forward to continuing on the learning path that comes with trying to fulfill his long-term goal of employment in game design.

James met with Codename’s CEO Eric Jordan, who outlined the skills and abilities the industry looks for in potential employees, while giving James the opportunity to show off some of his own game design and artwork. Eric outlined some excellent educational programs related to employment in game design, as well as listing some of the tools of the trade (programs, hardware, etc.) that James might be interested in exploring further as he builds his portfolio. James expressed his aspirations within the game industry as well. This was followed with a tour of the studio and a chance to meet the employees.

MICHELLE MENTOR

Michelle is a strong self-advocate. She is involved in the BC Self Advocacy Foundation as a Team Leader for “Promoting Our Abilities”, is an Editorial Board Member for Community Living BC, she is also an employment mentor for the Community Employment Action Plan and is the Director of BC Employment First. Michelle is also currently employed at Salvation Army in Victoria as a customer service clerk. Michelle’s dream job is to be a paid self-advocate. However, she is also interested in a career in office administration.

Michelle then returned to Seaspan and did an amazing job. Both Shelley and Lila were impressed with Michelle’s work ethic and when her day drew to an end, thanked her with an impressive gift bag as a memento of her time at Seaspan. Michelle was thrilled to practice her administrative skills in a large office environment and gained confidence in her abilities because of the opportunity and great feedback. She is looking forward to pursuing her career goals in this field.

Michelle’s day began with an introduction to her mentors Shelley and Lila. They met and talked about Seaspan and discussed what Michelle would be doing for the day which entailed pulling files located on a master list of employees that were no longer with the company from a large filing area. After a tour of the administrative area, Michelle got straight to work. At lunch time, Michelle’s mentors took Michelle out to lunch. On the way out, Shelley showed Michelle some of their current projects in the shipyard. During lunch Shelley and Lila got to know Michelle better and discussed what her career goals were and her current involvement as a self-advocate.

EMILY MENTOR

VANCITY

Emily has been looking for work in an office environment after her previous employer moved its head office far from her home. Emily was excited to have the opportunity to be mentored by Michelle, a branch manager at Vancity. Emily really enjoyed her time getting to know Michelle and learning the day-to-day activities behind how a bank runs. Among the highlights of the day was getting an inside look at the ATM machines at the branch to see how the machines work. Emily was amazed as she always wondered where the card went and how the money come out with a receipt. As the day progressed, Michelle get to know Emily more and was able to talk about all the things that Emily enjoys doing with her time. Emily reported that she enjoyed dressing up and doing office work at her previous job. A natural talker, Emily also enjoys working with the public and is a self-taught artist who paints during her spare time. In 2015, Emily won third place in a “The Corporation of Delta Heritage Banner Design” contest. VanCity spends and invests locally, and has many programs that create jobs and wealth that stays in the local community. To this end, Michelle has offered Emily a display at her branch so that Emily can sell some of her hand-made art cards and canvasses at their location. Other business connections for Emily are on the horizon through the opportunity to get to know Michelle through MentorAbility.

KATHRYN MENTOR

PONY PALS RIDING STABLES

Kathryn’s dream is to find work that matches her passion for animals, so she was connected to Pony Pals Riding Stables in Delta for her mentorship. Mentor Candice showed Kathryn around the beautiful facilities and introduced her to the staff and the key jobs that happen every day at the stables. The barn offers riding instruction to people of all abilities for regular lesson programs and special events. Staff member Meghan showed Kathryn the different gear available at the facility, including English and Western saddles and harnesses. Kathryn then had a lesson in placement of equipment at the stalls and how to saddle up the horse. Kathryn was able to try out different jobs right away, helping to prepare the horses for their riders that day. Among Kathryn’s highlights for the day was spending time engaging with the horses and brushing out their coats.

SCOTTY MAC

Max has always enjoyed watching wrestling on TV, but didn’t dream that he would be able to watch a live match. Through his participation in the MentorAbility Project, he was able to watch live, in the front row, at the North by Northwest Tag Team Title Tournament in Vancouver. Max enjoyed getting in the ring with fan favourite Scotty Mac and got the championship-winning wrestler’s autograph on a t-shirt. While attending the wrestling match, Max was able to participate in the active crowd and enjoyed the atmosphere that allowed him to talk and cheer as much as he wanted.

SHAWN MENTOR

ELECTRONIC ARTS CANADA INC

Shawn’s love for video games landed him a mentorship at the EA Games campus in Burnaby. EA Games produces, among other things, a variety of video games for popular sports, including FIFA soccer, NHL and NBA games featuring the stars from across each league. Shawn was greeted at the door by Holly, a recruiter for EA Games and her team. The group toured Shawn around the amazing campus, which features fitness rooms, a full-sized soccer field, several arcades and lots of places to eat. Following the tour of the facilities, Shawn was paired with the UFC video game team where he got the chance to play the game and see what goes into being a game tester. Shawn really enjoyed his time with this team and getting a peek at the games under development. Shawn was asked for his feedback to what his thoughts were about the game. Like all employees and visitors to EA Games, Shawn had to sign a confidentiality document but we suspect that EA would be okay with Shawn reporting that the game “was all good”. Following the tour and the game testing, Shawn had lunch on campus with his mentors and debriefed from the day.

One of our first matches was with a man who loves his comedy, his memory is unbelievable and he admires the Canadian actor from the shows Corner Gas and Hiccups, movie star Brent Butt. Our local coordinator contacted his manager and set up a meeting. Brent met with Calvin before the show in the green room where they chatted about Calvin’s favorite episodes and Brent’s favorite foods. With the help of the Cultural Centre’s manager Oliver, Calvin, his mother Karen and the local coordinator even received tickets to the sold out show. The smile on Calvin’s face could light up a dark building! Everyone he saw, he told about how he met the famous Brent Butt. It was a dream come true.

Marilyn Mueller, the owner of the locally owned and operated pizzeria called Olios’, agreed to mentor Dawn. Dawn arrived and got an apron on and received a tour of the kitchen, dining area and office. She was shown all the different types of preparation areas and the coolers. Marilyn then taught Dawn how to make pizza and discussed all the aspects to running her restaurant. Dawn used her food safe skills in the kitchen and was smiling ear to ear. Dawn was delighted to take her pizza home to share with her family.

RUDY’S CAR WASH

Dustin was matched with Rudy’s Car Wash where he got to be mentored by Sherry Rogers. He showed up in his work boots, safety vest and coveralls ready for the day. He learned how to clean the bays including floors and walls. Dustin got to clean a double bay learning how to push the big chunks of mud into the grates and the different aspects to the car wash. He was very diligent in getting it done with the largest grin on his face the entire time. The entire staff at Rudy’s made it priority to chat with Dustin and even gave him a shirt to take home with him. Dustin was very proud of this and hopes to return in the near future as he was invited back anytime. What a great match!

Isabelle met with her mentor Elda Hallarda, the executive house keeper at Microtel. They went over the cleaning checklist in detail. Elda was a teacher in the Philippines for 25 years and took her time ensuring Isabelle understood all the steps needed to complete the janitorial job assigned to her. Elda role modeled tasks for Isabelle and they completed all the cleaning tasks assigned. Isabelle was glowing while she worked and said she definitely loved working there. She learned a lot and hopes to be an employee at Microtel one day, as she truly valued the respectful fun team there.

Pizza 73 staff members Mike and Gagandeer agreed to mentor John. When arriving at the store the staff there had an apron and hat ready for John and got right to work. John learned how to make pizzas, dip-za bread and onion rings. He used the deep fryer and other machines in the kitchen with only being shown once. John was so excited he got to take the things he made home to his mother to say he cooked dinner for her. Pizza 73 let him take his apron and hat home as well and sent up a thank you note stating how great he did with a gift certificate and other goodies. John said he loved it there and hopes to find employment making pizzas.

Lido theatre is a well-known hot spot in town for all the upcoming shows from comedy to live music. Its owner Brian Kirschner mentored Kelly Clark in a position that is of high importance in the entrainment industry. Kelly got to not only try out a job position watching for those that forget and walk out for a smoke or fresh air with their drinks but he got a lot of social interaction and that made his day absolutely great. Kelly has been added to casual call in list for this job and he looks forward to making money and meeting people.

Hollwood Videos area manager Jason signed up to mentor Michael who loves movies and games. His store manager Jay showed Michael one of the stores most important jobs; doing returns. Michael used the computer to do returns and then replaced the locks on the dvds. He really enjoyed this and is grateful for the opportunity to see how the movie store works behind the scenes.

FRESH GOURMET TAKE AWAY

Aleesa and Sarah have started a small business venture, called “It’s In The Bag”, where they pack convenient meals for a local tour bus company. Business has been going well and there is definitely potential for growth. The owner and founder of “Fresh Gourmet Take Away”, Donna, was gracious enough to take a moment from her busy day to spend some time with the ladies for National MentorAbility Day. Aleesa and Sarah asked some fantastic questions like, how to start growing a business, how to keep staff motivated and what it took Donna to get her business to where it is today. Donna spoke about the benefits of being your own boss and how the business is only as successful as what the owner puts into it. She was also candid about the reality of 15 hour days, 6 days a week and the challenges, like marketing. Donna finished up the MentorAbility by giving the ladies a tour and a run down of a typical day in her business. Donna provided some valuable advice to the ladies in their quest to make a small business venture into a career.

LANGLEY MONTESSORI SCHOOL & EARLY LEARNING CENTRE

Brandon’s dream job is to be a teacher’s assistant in a preschool classroom. One could only imagine how ecstatic he was to find out he would be at the Langley Montessori Preschool for MentorAbility day. Brandon met Tara, the Manager, and she gave him the grand tour of each classroom as well as explained some very interesting facts about the Montessori way of teaching. Brandon was then introduced to Miss Haj and her students who immediately took to Brandon. They were all very eager to show him pictures they had made and what they were working on. Miss Haj also had Brandon help students with various lessons and story time. The day finished off outside and Brandon did a great job engaging the kids in games until their parents arrived. Brandon got the kids together for a game of “What Time is it Mr. Wolf?” Of course the game was a hit and the kids had a blast! Brandon has completed a portion of his ECE, so this MentorAbility day has certainly made an impact on his decision for a career!

Christian loves computers and technology. Thales offered an opportunity for Christian to visit the company at their office in Burnaby where they run the sky train. He got to meet with a variety of people and learn a lot about their business. The head of the IT department gave Christian inside information about what is best to do if he is interested in pursuing a career in Information Technology. The Human Resources manager gave him tips about what his resume should include and how to approach a company like Thales for employment. Christian was given a tour of the facility including the server room which made Christian’s face light up and his jaw drop! At the end of the tour he was given many parting gifts and well wishes. Christian will always remember this MentorAbility day, especially when he takes the sky train! A huge thank you to the team at Thales for making Christian’s MentorAbility day a memorable one!

TRINITY WESTERN UNIVERSITY BASKETBALL TEAM

Connor loves to watch and play basketball; most of Connors life revolves around sports in some way, so for Connor the obvious match for MentorAbility was assistant coach for a day, with Trinity Western Basketball Team! Connor was beyond excited when he found out that he would be Assistant Coach for the day. Connor arrived at Langley Events Center to help with the Tuesday evening practice and met the Coach, Aaron Muhic, and the Basketball team. Connor instantly felt like part of the team. Connor cheered on the team, encouraging the players to play their best. Connor assisted with the practice, throwing balls back to the players from the sidelines, saying the team cheers and helping count push ups with them. It was an incredible experience for him, which he expressed he would like to do again. At the end of the practice, Connor thanked all the players and the coaches for inviting him. Connor shook all their hands and gave them fist bumps. Before Connor left at the end of the practice, Aaron gave Connor a team shirt. Connor was so excited, he put the shirt on immediately.

CRANKY’S BIKE SHOP

Daven rides his bike everywhere and will talk your ear off about the repairs he has made, so Daven exploring what happens at a bike shop was a natural MentorAbility opportunity. Heath MacKenzie is the owner of Cranky’s Bike Shop in Aldergrove. He invited Daven to come by for a visit to check it out. Heath gave Daven a tour of the store and all of the new and used bikes. He introduced Daven to the staff and brought him into the back where they fix the bikes. He showed Daven the storage containers outside where they store stock that won’t fit in the store. Daven was in awe! Daven talked about the bikes he has and the plans he has for them. Heath offered Daven some of the parts he needed, and Daven accepted them gratefully. Heath offered Daven his contact information and said that Daven can call or email if he has any questions.

MORRIS AND HELEN BELKIN ART GALLERY

David was in his ultimate glory, when he heard that he was going to do a MentorAbility day at the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery at the UBC campus.

When David was asked if he would like to work in the gallery, without taking a pause, David replied “oh Yes, I would love to be a tour guide!”

When David was picked up that morning, he was dressed in his finest, white jacket, tie and black pants, and his finest black shoes. David was ready for even the grandest, opening reception at the gallery. He wore the biggest and most heart felt smile all day. It was David’s first time at the UBC campus, and the Belkin Gallery. David was impressed with the interior architecture of the gallery, commenting on the ceiling and lighting design. David continually expressed his opinion on the artwork, and the unique furniture found throughout the building. David was introduced to the gallery staff by Teresa, and learned about their specific responsibilities, which included aspects of public relations, marketing, cataloging the art work, storage and shipping, followed by a tour of the office spaces and the archives rooms. The tour of the two archive rooms impressed David the most. David was very inquisitive and impressed with the handling of the art, where white gloves had to be worn before the art could be handled, and this procedure prevented oil from the hands settling on the art and damaging it. David also was impressed with the cataloging, numbering system and storage system for a variety of art, from paintings to sculpture.

JAMES MENTOR

GO! SHAW TV

James loves being in front of a camera and in the limelight, so he was the obvious match for a MentorAbility day with Go! on Shaw TV. James was beyond excited when he found out that he would be on location at the Canadian Museum of Flight in Langley to watch an episode being filmed. James met with the presenter, Dunia, and cameraman, Jim. They made him feel right at home. Dunia explained how the day would look, which included 2 hours on location getting the footage and then another 2 hours editing at the Shaw office. Jim showed James the camera, how it worked and he even got to try filming. As a bonus, James was offered to have a seat in the cockpit of a Tiger Moth by the GM of the Museum, he certainly didn’t turn that down! After they were done filming, Dunia did a brief interview with James, he was in his glory! James was given a full tour and introductions to all of the staff at the Shaw office in Surrey. Dunia and James sat down in front of the computer and she explained each step of the process to him as it was done. Editing 2 hours of material to a 2-3 minute episode. James was captivated by this process. James loved spending the day with Dunia and being part of the filming, the actor that he is. James is available for autographs, just contact his agent!

HANNAH CUMMINS PHOTOGRAPHY,

Kendal has always enjoyed taking photos. She even has her own camera and enjoys planning photo shoots with her family. Kendal has always been interested in photography and wanted to learn more about it. Hannah, from Hannah Cummins Photography, was contacted; and was super supportive in the MentorAbility day. Hannah said she would be honored in taking an individual out on a photographer tour. Kendal was amazed by Hannah and what she was teaching her. They both walked around Fort Langley taking photos of flowers, bridges, water, buildings and the beautiful scenery around them. Kendal was also taking photos of the photographer; they were each other’s models for the afternoon. Throughout the afternoon of walking through Fort Langley, Kendal’s smile just kept getting bigger. The glow Kendal had on her face after her day with Hannah was spectacular! When asked about her day, Kendal gleaming from ear to ear said “I could spend all day Monday-Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. being a photographer”. Thank you Hannah for making Kendal’s day picture perfect!

Kyle is a man’s man, so when a MentorAbility at FL Smidth, a manufacturing plant, came about, Kyle was the guy. This MentorAbility Day was a great opportunity for Kyle to try something different. Kyle started his day off by meeting Jeff and Randy, then he was given an in depth safety orientation. It’s a bustling epicentre of large drilling machinery, forklifts and welding equipment, so safety is of utmost importance to both the employer and employee. Kyle was given a safety vest, ear plugs and safety glasses to wear while he toured the plant. Kyle was shown around the large welding/drilling shop which consists of a complicated outlined pathway leading throughout the buildings. This safety zone must be followed whenever anyone is on the shop floor. Kyle was in awe when he was shown all the big equipment and what they are used for. Kyle is such a friendly young man that within the first 15 minutes of his day he had said hello to pretty much everyone in the entire building.Kyle’s MentorAbility day was such a great experience for him. Not only did he come away with a better understanding of what they do at FL Smidth but he also came away with a job!

ELECTRONIC ARTS CANADA INC

With the assistance of Inclusion BC, Quinn had a once in a life time opportunity to do a one day mentorship in his dream career at EA Games. This was an incredible experience for Quinn. First Quinn got a tour of one of the buildings, with the full gym, many offices working on different video games, the multiple arcade rooms, many coffee stations, and the fancy cafeteria, called EAT. Quinn also got to tour the outside, where they have the outdoor soccer turf, the beach volley ball court, and roof top patios. Quinn then was paired up with his mentor Rob. Rob’s job is quality assurance, where he tests the games and ensures that it is in good running condition. Rob allowed Quinn to play around with the new game that is not even finished yet and has many extra features just for game testers. EA Games supplied Quinn with a free lunch, a movie, a tuque, a notebook, and a free video game of his choice. EA Games had such an incredible environment. They encourage creativity and staff collaboration. EA Games even welcomes employees to bring their dogs to work. Quinn had a great time at EA Games and learned a lot about the process that goes into making video games.

Vernon is one techy guy… he has a passion for electronics, especially computers, so a great MentorAbility match was made with Alter.net Internet in Langley. This business is a one stop shop that does everything from web hosting, web design, dial-up, email and domain registration, all with friendly service and support. The added bonus is that the owner Doris is a former teacher at a local university, so she did a fantastic job at teaching Vernon the ins and outs of the business. Doris gave Vernon a tour of the office and he was in awe of the room that housed all the hard drives, mainframe computer, back up power and everything else a techy person would appreciate. Vernon had the opportunity to look up the availability of some domain names for customers and listen in on some tech support calls. Doris’ way of explaining things had Vernon laughing so hard; which was great to see as he is usually a quieter young man. Vernon was extremely engaged and he was asking a multitude of great questions. This is definitely an environment that he shines in. In fact, the short time Vernon spent there went so well, Doris asked him to come back again in 2 weeks so he can try the fun hands on aspect of the job plus she offered to help him make his own web page! Move over Bill Gates, Vernon is hot on your heels!!!

THE REPTILE GUY

After introductions and a quick lesson on how to care for the reptiles, Amber went right to work. She started her day with gathering food dishes and preparing salads. She placed the filled dishes back into the proper homes of each reptile. Once she had completed that she moved on to cleaning and misting the enclosures of each animal. Once all the morning tasks were completed, Brandon (her mentor for the day) gave her an education on the lifespans, point of origins, behaviors and care of each reptile. Brandon also gave her the opportunity to hold and touch/feel each animal, giving instruction on how to handle them. Amber held a variety of lizards, snakes, frogs, turtles, scorpions, tarantulas, and even a Macaw with natural ease. Mike (the owner) also took some time out of his busy day to talk about some of the successes and challenges of running the refuge/store. He talked about his move to Mission and the upcoming events and promotions. Amber told him that he had the “best job ever” and if he ever needed someone she would be available.

ANDREA MENTOR

SILVERDALE DOGY VACATION LODGE

Andrea is one of MACL’s Employment Service’s latest Job Club graduates. She has always shared her love for dogs and said she wanted to be mentored at a place that cared for animals, specifically dogs. Andrea was quickly matched with Margaret the owner of Mission’s “Silverdale Doggy Vacation Lodge”. Upon arrival, Andrea was welcomed by Margaret and shown the area where customers retrieve their dogs after their vacation. The dogs were very happy and excited to see their owners. They were also very friendly and affectionate to Andrea. Andrea happily gave the dogs all the attention they were craving. Afterwards, Margaret welcomed Andrea into her beautiful log home. Her home had numerous small dogs playing with one another while others were resting in their beds. Two particularly friendly dogs took turns sitting on Andrea’s lap. Margaret graciously gave Andrea a full tour of her dog resort. She viewed a man-made lake for the dogs to swim and a stunning water park complete with fountains and two swimming pools with a duel sprinkling system. Andrea spent the majority of her time patting the numerous dogs enjoying the water park and laughing as they took turns shaking off right beside her.

Andrea viewed the dog’s immaculate sleeping area and staff’s office. During the tour Margaret educated Andrea to the fact that it is very hard work to keep her business to these high standards. She showed Andrea her work routine, informed her of the long hours and the volunteers required to keep her dog vacation resort running. Margaret also invited Andrea to come back any time in the future. This business was very welcoming, inclusive and definitely a one of a kind place for dogs and people to enjoy. Margaret gave Andrea a glow in the dark safety collar to bring home for her dog. She also showed her a framed picture of the next dog that will be picked up from the resort later that afternoon that she will be giving to the owner. Andrea arrived at Silverdale’s Doggy Vacation Resort clean and nervous, she left the resort dirty, smiling and wanting to go back in the near future.

CINEPLEX–SILVER CITY MOVIE THEATRE

After introductions the manager Grant sat down with Billy and shared the history and background of the Cineplex theatre. He also explained how the production of movies worked. Billy then asked what the different jobs and tasks were that are needed to run a movie theatre.

At the end of the visit Billy was shown the popcorn machine and concession area. He had a picture taken with Grant and ended his day by thanking the manager and shaking his hand. He left with a huge smile on his face and said that he had a great time!

Grant then showed Billy what a “ticket taker” does as well as how the ticket scanner and automatic ticket machine worked. He took Billy to look inside one of the movie theatre rooms letting Billy pick which one he wanted to view. Billy chose his favorite number 5.He then showed him where all of the speakers were located in the theatre, how the lights worked (dimmed, partially on, etc.) and explained the janitorial jobs that were required to keep the movie theatre clean. After this, Billy was accompanied upstairs to view the room where the movies are put on for each theatre room and had a tour of all the equipment that is needed to have a movie put into action. Billy was able to assist with turning on certain equipment and help set up computers to turn on the movies that were about to play for the “mom and tot” group that had just arrived. He then toured the Pop making area, where there was a large ice maker, several pop syrup flavors and a very large carbon tank.

WAYNE MENTOR

THE CANDY SHACK

After learning about the MentorAbility initiative Wayne said, “I would like to be mentored by Pamela Anderson”. After clarifying that it was about spending the day at a business of interest, rather than spending the day with the woman of his dreams, Wayne chose to spend the day at the Candy Shack as he knows and admires the business owners of this store.

Wayne learned about the many different types of candies, specialty sodas and their origins. He was also given a demonstration of how to build a candy gift basket. Sean said that the baskets are popular for charitable donations and special occasion gifts. Wayne assisted making a basket for a local community fundraiser.

Knowing the owner (Sean), Wayne was immediately welcomed and put right to work. This store is supplied with a large variety of imported candy and also displayed numerous hockey jerseys hanging from the ceiling. This prompted Wayne in sharing his love of the Canucks.

Wayne ended his MentorAbility day by gratifying his sweet tooth by taste testing a variety of quality candies that have been exported from all over the world.

Sean invited Wayne to choose any jersey he would like to wear for his MentorAbility day. Wayne did not hesitate to pick the #17 The Ryan Kesler jersey. Sean also gave Wayne a beaded Canucks necklace. Wayne agreed to keep the necklace, vowing to wear it while watching the Canuck games to give the team good luck. Wayne got the opportunity to try some hands on work. He assisted with replenishing candy jars, wiping counters and facing (labels in front) the beverage machines. Sean also gave Wayne some “hands on” experience using the cash register as he waited on customers.

FANTASY FARMS/REAPERS

Debra has been often known to say “the scarier the better.” Through the years, Debra has openly shared her interest and knowledge of horror movies. This is why it was no surprise that Debra would choose to spend her MentorAbility day at Chilliwack’s haunted attraction, Reapers at Fantasy Farms. Debra arrived in the morning walking around the grounds, taking in all the sights from the variety of pumpkins and gourds to the numerous scary haunted displays. Debra was quickly welcomed by the owners Gary and Lisa. They introduced Debra to their friendly employee named Sabana. Sabana would be Mentoring Debra for the day, inviting her to follow and assist with her daily work routine. She chatted with Debra informing her about the Fantasy Farms history and many other exhibitions the farm is famous for, including the Christmas attraction, garlic festival, weddings and corporate events to name a few. Debra spent the majority of her time at the kid friendly haunted attraction. This area is equipped with huge bouncy castles, Halloween decorations, games and a classroom setting equipped with hay bales for families to sit. There were two elementary school classes expected to arrive. Debra assisted with preparing for their arrival by counting goody bags and sweeping the hay between the hay bales.

Children sat on these hay bales and listened as Gary informed the group about their unique farm and interesting facts about horticulture. Debra admittedly learned something new too. She learned that pumpkins and cucumbers are fruit not vegetables. Debra agreed to follow along with the group of students to the pumpkin patch. She walked through a blackened maze with the group in the daylight to a train station. Gary admitted the maze would be much scarier and harder to conquer in the dark. The train was filled with students so Debra was offered the option to sit on a hay bale at the back of the train. She quickly obliged and rode with the group, sitting on a hay bale to the pumpkin patch. Debra watched as the kids scrambled through the huge pumpkin field to find their perfect pumpkin. The obvious highlight of Debra’s MentorAbility day was walking through the Reapers haunted house. The house was lit up and opened specifically for Debra. The only thing missing was the spooky characters popping out to scare her. Every terrifying room of the house was loaded with creepy scenes and props. Even though it was daylight outside, the house was dark and full of nail biting special effects. Before entering each room, Debra would calm herself down by saying “easy, keep it easy”. Debra said she loved the end of the house the best, where she was reunited with all of her favorite life sized horror movie characters.

DEREK MENTOR

DISTRICT OF MISSION

Derek met the Mayor Randy Hawes in his office at the Mission Municipal Hall. The Mayor let Derek don his ceremonial robe, hat and neck piece. He explained the ties between Mission and its’ sister city, Oyama, Japan. The Mayor gave a tour of the building including the council chamber and the planning department.

At the Blackberry Kitchen restaurant, the Mayor explained some of his other duties over a delicious lunch. Derek thanked the Mayor for lunch and all of the interesting experiences they had that day. Derek was given some “District of Mission” parting gifts upon leaving.

Our next stop was the Public Works facility. Derek got a ride around the yard in a street cleaning truck. He toured the various shops in the compound and learned a lot about the important function of this department. The Mayor drove us down to the Mission fire hall where we were greeted by the fire chief, Larry Watkinson. Derek checked out all the trucks and then he and the Mayor got to ride 100 feet up in the big ladder bucket! Derek crushed some pop cans using the “Jaws of Life” as a firefighter explained the practical uses of the tool. Chief Larry awarded Derek honorary fire fighter status with a framed certificate and shoulder crest. We drove to Another MACL site in the big ladder truck. There was a Halloween party in full swing and many of the guests came out to see the truck and talk to the Mayor and fire crew. While the fire fighters drove us to Heritage Park, Derek used the headset to communicate with them and learned more about the department.

DONNA MENTOR

THE REPTILE GUY: REHABILITATION AND RESCUE CENTER

Donna received a warm welcome from Buster the Macaw as she walked in the door at 10am. She chatted with Buster for a few minutes while Mike, the business owner, showed some guests around the viewing area. Donna then met Mike and he introduced her to Simon, her mentor for the day. Simon showed Donna how to prepare the breakfast trolley. Donna blended in to the relaxed and friendly atmosphere of the center, chatting with viewing guests and greeting each animal kindly as she gave them their meals. With that same great sense of humor, she cleaned the litter of the tortoises and lizards. Simon and Donna talked about their mutual passion for reptiles while Simon showed her all the exotic pets they have rescued; snakes, monitor lizards, arachnids, rare turtles, hedge hogs and even a few blue poison dart frogs. Donna quickly caught on to the specific way to mist the pens for the reptiles to simulate the humidity of their natural environment. Near the end of her shift, Donna also was able to hold some of the animals. When she was asked about holding the ball python and the tarantula, she said, “I really enjoyed it”. A mentorship at this unique rehabilitation center was a great opportunity for Donna to indulge in one of her greatest passions and learn more about caring for the animals she loves.

KYLE

MENTOR

MISSION FIRE HALL

Kyle was greeted at the Mission Fire Hall by Firefighter Nick Rychkun. Just then a call came in and most of the crew jumped in a truck and moved out of the station. Nick let Kyle try on some of the protective gear that they wear when firefighting (coat, helmet and air pack) which made him appreciate how heavy and hot it would be! Nick gave Kyle the tour of the entire hall. He saw the change room, dispatch station, operations room, gym, hose drying tower and various other specialized areas. After having coffee with the rest of the newly returned crew, Nick took Kyle for a drive around town in Engine No. 5. Kyle sat in the front seat and got to sound the horn. He really enjoyed browsing the hall museum checking out old pictures and news clippings. At the end of the visit, Nick gave Kyle an official Mission Fire Fighter T-shirt and crest. Kyle said it was a great experience!

SHEA

MENTOR

HOFA, ART SUPPLIES & FRAMING

Shea is known for making her own special occasion cards, homemade dog treats, scrap booking and rainbow looming just to name a few. Shea immediately said “yes” at the opportunity to spend the afternoon at the Hofa Art and Crafts store for her MentorAbility experience. Once Shea arrived at the store, she was introduced to the HOFA’s friendly employees. Her main mentor for the afternoon was Chrissy. Chrissy asked Shea if she was interested in helping out by painting a Christmas mural on the store front window. Shea eagerly agreed and started painting. Shea, along with two of the staff had a window pane each as their canvas. The atmosphere was relaxing while painting, with old time Christmas carols playing and friendly conversation. Shea learned about the family owned stores history, the art classes for children and adults, the vast range of art supplies for sale, the gift shop, the framing services and their many upcoming fundraising events. It was a great day! Shea would like to invite everyone to come and admire the Christmas mural in the window of Hoffa Art Supplies and Framing.

SHAYNE MENTOR

ELECTRONIC ARTS

After arriving and signing in we toured the fantastic facility at Electronic Arts in Burnaby. The group checked out the spaces where employees work, meet and recreate. This is a work environment that supports team work and builds incentive. Paul, Shayne’s mentor introduced him to fellow game testers and leads. Shayne asked how they got into this career and what their background was before working at EA. The answers varied as far as background some had degrees or courses in film work, animation or business. Others had no related experience or education. What was common amongst the game testers was a willingness to be flexible and to accept change at short notice, a cohesive team spirit, good communication, commitment to get work done, attention to detail, interest in the games and the sport and experience playing the games.

EA treated us to a great lunch in their cafeteria where we chatted with recruiters. We exchanged information about the work we do through our agencies. Shayne chatted with the diversity manager and discovered they knew each other in the past. Shayne had a brief opportunity to chat with a recruiter and made plans to come back to meet with him. It was an interesting and informative day we thank our mentors at Electronic Arts for their time, for sharing their experience and making us feel welcome.

Paul modified a space at the spur of the moment so Shayne could play and test out NHL 16. Chris, Tannara, Paul and Shayne split into teams. During the game, Paul explained how they use a checklist to test aspects of the game and the process of rectifying a game problem. The relaxed and friendly environment at EA made it easy for Shayne to converse with his mentors and they found that they had a few things in common such as a North Shore connection, an interest in games and technology and working in a place where it is important to get along with others yet be able to work on your own when needed.

COREY MENTOR

RED ROBIN

Corey’s interest in the food service industry began during high school when he participated in a work experience in a cafeteria. During this time, Corey achieved certification in Food Safe & learned the proper techniques for working with knives.Looking to utilize these skills in a career, Corey expressed interest in learning more about career opportunities in the “back of house”. Corey was welcomed by the friendly & knowledgeable team at Red Robin. He was provided with a tour and learned more about both the prep and line cook roles. Corey learned how various foods are prepared and how the inventory for food is documented. Safe food practices, excellent customer service skills and the ability to work in a quick paced environment were also observed by Corey. During his time at Red Robin, Corey was impressed with how organized and clean the kitchen was. He also had the opportunity to interview several Red Robin staff members about their roles in the company and what they enjoyed about their jobs. Corey learned that many members of this Red Robin team are long term employees who enjoy great training and professional growth opportunities. Corey left his MentorAbility experience looking forward to pursuing a career in the food services industry.

CUMBERLAND MUNICIPAL COUNCIL

The MentorAbility experience I had was with Councilor Sean Sullivan of the Cumberland Council. I had the opportunity to job shadow him and see what goes on in terms of his job. The reason I’d been paired up to job shadow him is because of my interest in politics. My interest stems from wanting to further promote creating change for those I have a chance to help as well as meet within the Comox Valley and other communities. Councilor Sullivan was very informative with what it takes to become part of Council as well as why he chose it as his line of work. My hope in being involved with municipal politics is to hopefully get onto Courtenay City council. I feel that it’d be a good opportunity for work alongside being a Self Advocate. Being given this opportunity from MentorAbility is very beneficial for those looking to experience a field of work they may want to pursue and I recommend it for those who want the chance to job shadow a field of employment for their future.

This experience allowed me to see what goes on, and if I chose, I too could one day become a part of Council, voicing and expressing not only the daily town/city issues, but also that of our very many hard working everyday people. I’m so thankful to Councilor Sullivan as well as the rest of the staff I met and Cumberland’s Mayor. I encourage anyone who has a chance to do the MentorAbility Program to do so. You’ll never regret it.

Once I had completed my MentorAbility with Councilor Sullivan, I was invited Tuesday October 14th to a council meeting. I found it interesting in that I got to experience what it’s like for council members to debate on the issues of a municipality, that being Cumberland. For me, I never could have imagined what it takes to make one of the many places within the Comox Valley run and made livable for its citizens.
