Editorial What a scorcher! This summer has been hot and sunny in the UK, which is not the weather we have become used to in recent years. Your divisional Career Development Group has also been busy providing scorching opportunities for professional development. Following on from the success of Librarians as Teachers in 2010, and the sneak preview in the last issue of this publication, you can read a report from Librarians as Teachers 2013 on p. 2. In addition, the first event combining both training for Chartership candidates and potential Chartership mentors was held in Shrewsbury, and you can read about this initiative on pp. 4-5. Networking is also an important part of professional development, and what better way to network than in a riverside pub on a sunny evening after work? Librarians as Teachers: #LAT2013 On 13th June 2013, CDG WM and ARLG WM held the Librarians as Teachers 2013 Event at Warwick University in the Wolfson Research Exchange. Victoria Beddard was successful in gaining the CDG WM sponsored place. The programme for Librarians as Teachers 2013 promised a diverse range of speakers and topics about engaging learners in the digital age and it was also a great opportunity to meet with librarians from other sectors. After a warm welcome from Anthony Brewerton, Head of Academic Services at Warwick University Library, the first keynote session of the day was from Professor David Nicholas, Director of CIBER Research. He talked about information in the digital world and the evidence that shows how people access this information, how they evaluate trustworthiness, and how information is increasingly ‘viewed’ rather than ‘read’. John Loy and Hélène Gorring discussed ‘cinemeducation’ - film clubs showing mainstream films covering topics such as psychiatry and mental health to medical students. As well as exploring medical issues, the film clubs also provide an alternative way for the library to work with students and raise awareness that learning does not just have to come from reading. The ‘Student as Researcher’ at Warwick University session from Helen Curtis and Cate Mackay explored the student journey and how students require support to access and develop their skills. We saw the interactive opportunities that have been put in place at Warwick, working in conjunction with the academic departments and also examples of the progress students have made. The session by Barbara Band on evaluating information on websites was one that was of particular interest to me. Barbara talked us through the presentation that she delivers for her Year 9 students which was a good way to deliver the session as we could experience it from a student point of view. The next keynote speakers, Jane Secker and Emma Coonan discussed how information literacy was about more than just the skills - researching and learning how to use the library effectively - and how we need to become facilitators rather than information providers. They also spoke about how it was equally important that teachers took this same approach towards information literacy.
Virginia Power talked about how we can evaluate what we are doing and measure impact in a number of fun and interactive ways. From questionnaires to graffiti walls, interactive buzzers to simple red and green response cards, there was a whole range of suggestions for ways we can engage with learners and gain their opinions. For the final session of the day Matt Gallon discussed 21st century learning spaces. He demonstrated ways to make the library space more functional for users and how this has an influence on, and is influenced by, the way students work today. While their methods of working are social and interactive, they also require traditional learning spaces as well. The day was really varied and interesting and gave lots of new ideas which can be adapted to fit individual library settings. Victoria Beddard is Librarian at Sandwell Academy
Summer social This yearâ€™s CDG WM Summer Social was held on of 4th July. Anna Brown coordinated the event. Five members got together on the warm summery evening for a tasty meal and drinks in the sophisticated surroundings of the Pitcher & Piano at Brindley Place in Birmingham. Three of us had attended Umbrella in Manchester on 2nd and 3rd July, so conversation topics included sharing experiences of the conference, as well as holiday stories and plans, work news and the likely merger of CILIP branches and CDG divisions. The canal side area was buzzing, as is usual in sunny weather, and a pleasant evening was had by all. Photo credit: Wess

Bringing candidates and mentors together A CILIP Chartership and Certification course was held on 24th June 2013 at Shrewsbury Hospital Library to coincide with a mentor training event. Maureen Twikirize is a Chartership candidate and was there... I got a whole new perception of Chartership process following the course that I attended. This was a one day event for Information Professionals preparing for Chartership and training for mentors, organised by CILIP CDG West Midlands. I regularly peruse through CILIP website for information and upcoming events, and I had marked this event a ‘must attend’. I stay in Lancashire but the invaluable knowledge and experience I gained was worth the distance I travelled. I have two overseas academic qualifications i.e. BLIS and Msc. Info. Science and over seven years of experience in management of University records and information. I was not sure how to fit my scenario in the portfolio. The course was in perfect timing, as I was striving to get the PPDP approach right. The course structure, content and delivery methods were excellent. It was delivered by eloquent and friendly speakers from CILIP, Marion Huckle, Jacqueline May and Sabelo Mapasure, CSO West Midlands. Lisa Basini volunteered to share her certification experience which was very useful. Being a blend of LIS professionals from different sectors, we shared our experiences, ideas and learnt from each other. Many thanks to Sabelo and the team for the hospitality, an event properly organised and different conducive fora for learning and sharing experiences.

The main objective of the course was to enlighten the participants on the Chartership journey with an emphasis on assessment criteria. The speakers explained the dos, don’ts, assessment criteria and features of a portfolio. Marion Huckle emphasized reflective writing as one of the key features considered by assessment board. She stressed that it’s not about stating facts but the ability to make a reflective evaluation of one’s service performance, commitment to professional development, breadth of knowledge and understanding of the profession. Participants were advised to seek help from CDG and CSOs during their Chartership journey. Speakers recommended and availed various avenues through which chartering candidates could get help like social networks, professional lists, different CILIP events and even non-LIS CPDs.
The most exciting part of the course was the joint lunch with mentor trainees and speakers. We shared experiences freely as we enjoyed lunch. If there was any participant without a mentor, I am sure they walked out with one. Mentor trainees again joined us for afternoon session in which speakers spoke about CILIP commitment to support mentors and CSOs, also about changes and the future of CILIP. One of the key changes talked about was the new PKSB as one of the requirements for future Chartership. However, we were also advised to use PKSB as our skill assessment tool and gap identification. Thereafter, we were given moments to reflect on what we had learnt. The course ended with question-answer session and a cup of coffee/tea. During the break we looked at successful portfolios, and shared experiences and ideas with the speakers. I had an opportunity to share my scenario with Marion Huckle and Jacqueline May, they were friendly and helpful. Following their guidance, my PPDP has taken a new turn, I understood how to fit my overseas experience and qualification in my portfolio. I am glad I attended this course and guess what? I have the certificate of attendance, one of the most needed evidence for Chartership! Also attending the day, but as a prospective mentor at the parallel mentor training event, was Gill Colbourne... West Midlands CDG committee decided it could be really useful for Chartership and Certification candidates to have the mentoring day run at the same time and place. This would enable candidates to chat with the budding mentors at lunch and also tea break. It was also an opportunity for Marion Huckle (Head of CPD at CILIP) to speak to both groups about the Professional Knowledge and Skills Base (PKSB) soon to be implemented as part of CILIP’s Framework of Professional Registration. I attended the day as one of my forward plans when I Chartered in 2012 was to become a CILIP mentor. Carol Brooks conducted the mentor day course and was a knowledgeable and experienced mentor, who gave good working examples as well as information. The morning session was about mentoring in the workplace and career development and the afternoon session was in relation to mentoring with CILIP. The day was broken up by sessions of practising mentoring skills with partners within the group. The real skill in mentoring is enabling people to reflect and to be supported in a decision – this is an art, as it is too easy not to listen or butt in with one’s own experiences! The day was held at the Shrewsbury Health Library and was facilitated by Sabelo Mapasure, our Candidate Support Officer. Candidates for the mentoring came from near and far to attend but mainly the Midlands area. As usual at these events it is a good networking opportunity and a chance to meet colleagues from different types of libraries. Vacancy Bulletin Getting involved in your professional organisation is a very rewarding way to contribute to your profession and can provide you with plenty of opportunities to address skills gaps in your CV. CDG WM currently has one vacancy on the committee — if you would like to find out more, e-mail email@example.com or come along to our next committee meeting (see p. 1). CDG WM committee roles are flexible and can be fitted around your work and home commitments. Committee meetings are usually held four times a year in the evening (6-8pm) but if you would find these difficult to attend, we would still like to hear from you! We believe that committee involvement is about more than attending committee meetings, and are always happy to receive a written report from those unable to attend in person.
Events Officer While all CDG WM committee members get involved in organising events, the Events Officer ensures that this is as straight-forward and consistent as possible. There is plenty of scope for someone to make this role their own, but suggestions for what this role might involve are: Maintaining information about local venues and speakers Ensuring quality and consistency across events Investigating ways to publicise events effectively This role would particularly suit someone looking to make use of or develop skills in ensuring standards are met, marketing, negotiating with suppliers, team-working, and collating, maintaining and communicating information.
