Dear Faculty and staff, Concordia University Student Parent Centre is soliciting the support of faculty and staff in reaching Concordia’s student parent population. CUSP is a student service dedicated to assisting Concordia’s student parents reach their education goals through programs, events and services. The Centre provides student parents with a safe and accessible space to congregate, study, voice concerns, share interests and develop a support network, and provides resources and referrals for things such as childcare, financial aid and subsidized housing. Student parents compose approximately 14% of students in all post-secondary studies, and Concordia University has an estimated 4000-5000 student parents. Some challenges Student parents face include difficulties with attendance, increased stress, social exclusion, amplified time restrictions, finances and role strain. Statistics show that individuals with families are less likely to enroll in post-secondary studies and are much more likely to abandon their studies as a result of these difficulties. CUSP works to address the challenges student parents must contend with and strives to raise awareness and understanding of their experiences in order to make university a more inviting environment for individuals with families. CUSP currently has almost 300 members and has made it a priority to create an awareness of our services among the remaining student parent population. Your assistance in reaching out to Concordia’s student parents would be significantly valuable in our ongoing effort to assist student parents in need. You can support our initiative by educating students about our services and referring known student parents to the Centre. If you would like to know more about CUSP please do not hesitate to contact us or visit our website at cusp.concordia.ca .
