VARESE SPORT TOURISM EXPERIENCE

Editoriale Varese e il suo territorio: quale migliore scelta per una vacanza all’insegna del turismo sportivo? O per organizzare eventi sportivi in un ambiente ideale e così vicino ai principali nodi aeroportuali e ferroviari del Nord Italia?

Voluta dalla Camera di Commercio e realizzata dalla sua azienda speciale Promovarese, nasce la “Varese Sport Commission”. Di che cosa si tratta? È un’iniziativa per fare dello sport e, più in generale, dell’attività all’aperto un veicolo per attrarre nuovi flussi turistici. Turismo “attivo” nelle sue più ampie accezioni, grazie a caratteristiche geografiche e ambientali di assoluto rilievo. Ma non solo. Impianti sportivi, infrastrutture, capacità organizzative e tutti quei servizi necessari per una vacanza attiva con famiglia o amici o per chi deve organizzare eventi e gare di livello agonistico o amatoriale.

Il tutto a contatto con un patrimonio artistico-culturale che fa del territorio varesino - con il Lago Maggiore punto di riferimento internazionale - un vero e proprio “parco naturale” di grande rilievo. Località che, oltre a essere “belle”, si sanno ben proporre per soddisfare le molteplici e sempre più nuove “esigenze” dei “turisti sportivi” avendone un vantaggio in termini non solo quantitativi, di arrivi e presenze, ma anche di capacità di spesa, di fidelizzazione e, più in generale, di “reputation”.

A chi ci rivolgiamo quindi?

Non solo alle tante “federazioni sportive” che organizzano tornei e competizioni e che cercano location nuove per campionati o tornei e competizioni agonistiche di livello nazionale o internazionale. C’è tutto un mondo intorno: basti pensare che non esiste praticamente associazione, ordine professionale, media e grande azienda, confederazione o università che non abbia al suo interno espressioni organizzate di sportivi praticanti di tutte le età. Persone che si allenano, si confrontano, si sfidano e che si ritrovano nelle più belle località d’Italia e del mondo in gare e tornei “amatoriali”, spesso accompagnati da parenti e amici. Esperienze che diventano, a loro volta, motivo di “ritorno” per successivi momenti di vacanza e sport: un vero e proprio circolo virtuoso, estremamente interessante per gli operatori del settore e, più in generale, del sistema dell’accoglienza.

La Varese Sport Commission dovrà fare dell’attrattività di questo tipo di turismo e di eventi sportivi la propria mission, promuovendo le bellezze ambientali del territorio, gli impianti più adatti, specifici servizi e prodotti integrati, valorizzando e integrando al meglio capacità organizzative di accoglienza e tradizioni sportive già mostrate in passato in eventi di assoluto rilievo. Proponendo candidature, attirando stampa specializzata, coinvolgendo attraverso i social influencer e testimonial, andando a fiere specializzate, ma anche mettendo a rete gli operatori del settore, coordinando i calendari, supportando gli organizzatori dei vari eventi.

Visto l’amore dei varesini per il proprio territorio e la passione che tanti di loro hanno praticando i più vari tipi di sport siamo certi che la Varese Sport Commission potrà diventare un “bene comune”, un soggetto nel quale riconoscersi ed essere “parte attiva”, dando il proprio contributo di relazioni, competenze, conoscenze per attrarre eventi e flussi turistico-sportivi sul territorio. Con l’obiettivo che tutto questo possa generare ricadute economiche e occupazionali e, più in generale, migliorare la qualità della vita sul nostro territorio.

Varese and its territory: what better place for a sportsbased holiday? Or what better place in which to organise sports events within a perfect setting and so near to the main airport and railway centres within the north of Italy?

Requested by the Chamber of Commerce and created by its special Promovarese company, we present the “Varese Sport Commission�.

What is it?

It is an initiative promoting sport and more generally, outdoor activities, a means to attract new flows of tourism.

"Active" tourism in its widest sense, thanks to the pivotal geographical and environmental features. However, this is not all. Sports establishments, infrastructures, the organisational abilities and all the services necessary for activity holidays with family or friends or for those looking to organise competitive or amateur tournaments.

All this alongside an artistic-cultural heritage which forms part of the Varese territory - with Lake Maggiore as an international reference point - a genuine and important "nature park". Locations which in addition to being "beautiful", are able to satisfy the multiple and constantly novel "requirements" of "sports tourists", which are important not just in terms of numbers, arrivals and presence, but also in terms of spending power, loyalty and more generally, "reputation".

Who are our services catered to then?

Not just the many "sports federations" which organise tournaments and competitions and which look for new locations to hold national or international championships or competitive tournaments and events. There is a whole other world: just think, practically every business organisation, medium and large-sized company,

confederation and university has, internally, events organised by sportspersons of all ages. Those training, those competing, those challenging themselves and whom find themselves in the most beautiful locations in Italy and in the world, taking part in "amateur" competitions and tournaments, often accompanied by parents and friends.

Experiences which, in turn, become reasons why people "return" on holiday and for the sports: a genuine virtuous circle, extremely advantageous for sector players and, more generally, the hospitality industry.

The Varese Sport Commission must make the appeal of this type of tourism and sports events its mission, promoting the environmental beauty of the territory, the most suitable associations, the specific services and integrated products, promoting and including them as best as possible to form part of the hospitality and sports traditions already proven

in the past with significant events held. Putting forward candidates, attracting specialist publications, ensuring involvement via social influencers and testimonials, attending specialist trade fairs, whilst also setting up networks for sector players, coordinating schedules, supporting the organisers of various events.

Having seen the love the people of Varese have for their territory and the passion with which they carry out the most varied types of sport, we are certain that the Varese Sport Commission can become a "public good", something which people can relate to and within which, play an "active role", contributing in terms of relationships, knowledge in order to attract tourism-sports events and flows to the territory.

All this with the objective that it can generate economic and employment opportunities and, generally, improve the quality of life across this territory.

Veleggiare tra monti e borghi, affascinati dal Lago Maggiore di Linda Terziroli

«Il lago è come se ti parlasse. Ti manda segnali che ti fanno capire ciò che sta per accadere», accadere», Paola Ferrario*, instancabile e bellissima velista, i capelli lunghi e scuri legati in una coda alta sfidano i venti, fermati da quel suo sguardo sicuro e coraggioso, quello di una mamma che ha vinto molte tempeste. «Molla gli ormeggi. Issa la randa» mi dice, con quel linguaggio tutto speciale che sa di nodi di nave e che sembra una lingua da cospiratori. Cerco di eseguire i comandi con l’impegno e la precisione necessari. È una bella giornata d’estate, sul Maggiore. C’è il vento di Tramontana da Nord. L’acqua è calda. Le vele sono gonfie e il lago è uno specchio d’acqua increspato, le onde si rompono sulla barca e gli schizzi freschi in faccia ti fanno rinascere, la calura estiva è d'un tratto lontanissima. È quando le vele si gonfiano d’aria che l’adrenalina sale, il vento ti accarezza il volto e la barca prende velocità.

Osservi la cornice ben definita del “tuo campo di gara” e scegli la strategia per sfruttare al meglio quello che la natura ti offre.

«Viaggio in barca a vela nel Lago Maggiore - mi dice Paola - e mi accorgo che si tratta di un'esperienza unica per il paesaggio, per la sfida nella guida, per la riscoperta dei ritmi della natura».

Mollare gli ormeggi da uno dei porticcioli vuol dire andare alla scoperta di una vita lontana dalla frenesia quotidiana e verso qualcosa di sconosciuto da ricordare la sera nel diario delle cose belle. La meraviglia di Santa Caterina del Sasso, l’impagabile vista del golfo di Caldè e la maestosità della Rocca di Angera.

Da un altro punto di vista.

Certo, perché veleggiare tra le acque del Verbano vuol dire soprattutto affinare i propri sensi. La vista, in primis.

La nuvola sopra il Mottarone può indicare l’arrivo dell’Inverna, il vento da Sud d’estate. Se sei su una piccola “deriva” allora, con la forza delle onde «…puoi anche “scuffiare” che è un piacere»,, come dice Paola, ti ribalti e sei in acqua. piacere»

Le sue spiegazioni sono semplici e chiare, tra storia e fisica.

Vedere, osservare, scrutare. Non solo, la vista entra in gioco soprattutto alla sera: è lei che, facendoci scorgere la luce brillante sul pelo d’acqua ci avverte quanto sia il vento a nostra disposizione, così che si sappia come andare a prenderlo.

Bisogna imparare a conoscere i segnali. Veleggiare sul Lago Maggiore, però, significa anche affinare il nostro olfatto. La bussola olfattiva che non ti fa perdere la rotta.

A che serve chiedo a Paola… «La notte, quando il vento lascia spazio alla brezza che scende dai canaloni e di volta in volta prende il nome dei paesi posizionati sulla riva, cogliere il profumo del pane che sta producendo l’artigiano vuol dire capire che ci si sta avvicinando a Laveno, dove c’è una panetteria proprio sulla piazza che dà sul lago. Il vento ci lancia il messaggio e tocca a noi velisti coglierlo».

Ogni paesino poi ha il suo vento: «Le montine che provengono da terra dalla montagna o dalle valli hanno il nome del paese da cui provengono: c’è la Colmegnina e poi l’Intragnola, la Maccagnina…. ».

Per navigare a vele spiegate, meglio sfruttare il canalone Maccagno, Pino e Tronzano. E poi veleggiare da Caldè a Laveno, Intra e fino a Belgirate. La mattina il vento è buono tra Colmegna e Luino, come pure a Ispra. È insomma il vento che ci deve guidare nella scelta dei nostri itinerari, giorno dopo giorno. Impossibile non innamorarsi.

Certo, è una bella mattina estiva col vento di Tramontana, il cielo terso e l’acqua calda sono irresistibili. E sì sì, nel lago come nella vita, mollare gli ormeggi! e poi… issare la randa, con le vele che si gonfiano… e via di bolina zigzagando per rincorrere il vento risalendo da Laveno a Porto Valtravaglia.

Le parole non sono poi così misteriose. Qualche istante per una planata e magari un tuffo con qualche bracciata.

La giornata scorre veloce: è tempo di ormeggiare per fermarci e gustarci un piatto da leccarsi i baffi nella stessa Laveno o magari a

Luino o a Castelveccana.

Paola ci indica con la mano dove potremmo ormeggiare... L’Inverna sta arrivando: ora si tratta di… lascare la randa e immergerci di nuovo nella magnificenza di quell’autentico parco naturale che è l’area del Lago Maggiore.

Viriamo verso le Isole Borromee, un passaggio e quindi lo spettacolo di Santa Caterina del Sasso, stupefacente al tramonto di una giornata di sole, quando i raggi creano colori affascinanti andando a sbattere contro la roccia e gli edifici dell’Eremo. «Un aperitivo?» ci domanda Paola…Sì, è possibile anche questo veleggiando in barca sul Maggiore.

Ora è tempo di tornare a Laveno: la giornata in ogni caso non è finita. Domani magari faremo un’escursione sui sentieri di montagna per cogliere il senso della natura prealpina.

Si preferisce la bicicletta? Siamo nel regno delle due ruote: a due passi c’è Cittiglio, casa del primo “campionissimo” del ciclismo Alfredo Binda. Ci sono però anche i percorsi nel verde delle vallate prealpine dove, ogni anno, si sfidano gli atleti protagonisti di una classica del ciclismo: la Tre Valli Varesine.

La sera non c’è il faro come al mare, ma un suggestivo brillare di luci là dove c’è più vento e uno specchio liscio con il riflesso dei profili luminosi dei paesi là dove, invece, c’è poca aria.

Il Lago Maggiore, rispetto al veleggiare sul mare, propone tante chicche da vedere da un punto di vista tutto particolare.

Il giardino botanico a Cerro, quello di villa Polidora dove i colori delle piante cambiano secondo le stagioni regalando quadri sempre diversi e affascinanti. Poi ci sono le fornaci a Ispra e Santa Caterina del Sasso che ogni volta propone luci

e colori diversi che incantano. Tornando in barca a Laveno, lo sguardo si spalanca sulla natura del borgo, sale lungo il filo della funivia tra il verde della montagna e fino al blu del cielo verso cui si lanciano impavidi gli amanti del parapendio colorando con i loro teli il “soffitto” sopra il Maggiore.

C’è poi il fascino delle ville sulla sponda di Caldè, Porto Valtravaglia, Germignaga e Luino, la cittadina di Piero Chiara in cui il lago si veste di cultura fin dentro alle viuzze di borghi ricchi di storie di provincia.

Veleggiare e veleggiare ancora, soprattutto imparare: sfidare le proprie paure. Silenzio e pazienza.

Succede qualcosa di magico. Ci si dimentica del cellulare e si pensa solo a far andare avanti la barca. Navigare ti riporta alle cose semplici. Devi guardare, osservare, fare attenzione a tutto quello

che c’è intorno e così hai la possibilità di scoprire ricca la nostra sponda del Lago Maggiore. Serve concentrazione, devi scrutare i venti, devi capire, e soprattutto aspettare. Impari a gustare l’arte della pazienza. Condurre la barca significa regolare le vele, prendere il timone e stare in silenzio.

Ti riappropri del silenzio e hai il tempo per pensare. Ed è proprio il tempo a volare, arrivi a fine giornata che è già ora di rientrare e dici “che peccato!”. Paola ci sorride, ce l'abbiamo fatta, nonostante tutto.

«Scarica lo strallo di coda!» mi indica Paola, a voce alta.

La giornata è finita. L’ultimo comando segna la conclusione di un’avventura unica. Eseguo l'ultimo comando, e poi siamo sulla terraferma, un ultimo sguardo al lago ed ecco un'altra barca prendere il largo. Veleggiando dolcemente.

Sailing between mountains and fishing villages, on the fascinating Lake Maggiore «It’s as though the lake is speaking to you. It gives you signals to let you know what’s about to happen», says Paola Ferrario, tireless and beautiful sailor whose long, dark hair tied in a high pony tail challenges the winds, stopped in their tracks by that sure, courageous gaze of a mother who has weathered many storms. «Cast off. Hoist the mainsail», she says to me, in that very specific language that knows about sailing knots and sounds like a cryptic code. I attempt to follow her orders with the diligence and precision required.

It is a beautiful summer day on Lake Maggiore. The north wind is blowing. The water is warm. The sails are taut and the lake is a rippled mirror of water. The waves are breaking against the boat, the cool spray on my face makes me feel reborn, and the heat of summer suddenly seems far away. As the sails fill with air, you feel a rush of adrenaline; the wind caresses your face and the boat picks up speed.

You observe the well-marked outline of “your race course” and choose the best strategy to take advantage of what nature has to offer.

The cloud above the Mottarone mountain may herald the arrival of the summer Inverna, the afternoon wind from the south. If you are on a short “keel” then, due to the power of the waves, «…you could “capsize”, which is a pleasure», as Paola says (i.e. tip over and end up in the water).

I am aboard a sailing boat on Lake Maggiore; a unique experience, I realise, due to the scenery, the challenge of sailing and the opportunity to rediscover nature’s rhythms.

To cast off from one of these marinas is to set out in discovery of a life far from the daily hustle and bustle, on an unknown adventure to be recorded in the evening in a journal of wonderful things: the beauty of the Santa Caterina del Sasso monastery, the unequalled view of the bay of Caldè and the majesty of the Rocca di Angera castle. All from a different perspective, of course, because sailing on the waters of Lake Maggiore (AKA Verbano) undoubtedly heightens the senses. The sight, first and foremost; that glance we cast at the cloud running across the summit of the Mottarone, understanding that the southerly afternoon wind may be about to replace the northerly morning one.

Paola's explanations are simple and clear, a combination of history and physics: seeing, observing and examining. The sight is also of particular importance in the evening. Indeed, by enabling us to spot the light shining on the water’s surface, it lets us know that the wind is there for us if we know how to use it.

also heightens the sense of smell; the olfactory compass that stops you from going off course.

I ask Paola how it helps... «At night, the wind gives way to a breeze which comes down from the hills, through the gorges and, from time to time, takes the name of the towns situated on the shore. Picking up the scent of baking bread tells you that you’re approaching Laveno where there’s a bakery right in the square that opens onto the lake. The wind sends us the message

Paola points her finger to a possible mooring place... The south wind is coming: now we must slacken the mainsail and, once again, immerse ourselves in the magnificent nature of the Lake Maggiore area.

We change course for the Borromean Islands, some sailing, and then the impressive view of the Santa Caterina del Sasso monastery which is sensational as the sun sets on a

with its enchanting changing colours.

Returning to Laveno by boat, the gaze opens up on the nature of the village and rises along the line of the cable car between the green of the mountain and the blue of the sky, into which paragliding enthusiasts launch themselves, decorating the “ceiling" above Lake Maggiore with their sails.

Not to mention the charm of the villas on the shore of Caldè, Porto Valtravaglia, Germignaga and Luino, and the little town

Each little town has its own wind: «Breezes originating from mountain or valley ground are named after the towns they come from: there's the "Colmegnina” (from Colmegna), the "Intragnola” (from Intra), the “Maccagnina” (from Maccagno)... ».

In order to sail with all sails up, she explains, it is best to take advantage of those from the gorges of Maccagno, Pino

Now it is time to return to Laveno: the day is over, in any case. Tomorrow, perhaps a hike along the mountain paths to get closer to the nature of the Prealps.

Sailing time and again, you learn, above all, to face your fears. Silence and patience.

Something magical happens: You forget about your mobile phone and think only about sailing the boat onward. Sailing brings you back to the simpler things. You have to look, observe and pay attention

And there are also the tracks in the green Prealpine valleys where, each year, athletes compete in a classic cycling event: the Tre Valli Varesine race.

In the evening, unlike on the sea, there is no

The day passes quickly and it is time to moor up and stop to enjoy a finger-licking dish in Laveno itself of perhaps in Luino or

lighthouse, just a picturesque twinkling of lights where there is more wind and, where the air is calmer, a smooth mirror reflecting the lights of the little towns.

Sailing on Lake Maggiore, unlike on the sea, offers many viewpoints and many delights to be seen from a unique perspective.

There is the botanic garden in Cerro, at Villa Polidora, where the colours of the plants change with the seasons, creating fascinating effects that are different each time. Then there are the kilns in Ispra and the Santa Caterina del Sasso monastery

helm and sit in silence.

You rediscover silence and have time to think. And time truly flies: suddenly, the day is ending and it is already time to go back, and you think, “what a pity!”. Paola smiles: we did it, in spite of everything.

«Loosen the backstay!», Paola instructs me, loudly.

The day is over. This final order signals the end of a unique adventure. I carry out the order and then we are on terra firma. I cast one last look at the lake, and there is another boat, sailing gently along.

Per pianificare al meglio l'escursione in barca a vela è bene ricordare che la mattina solitamente sul lago c'è il vento da Nord, Tramontana che nasce verso le 7 per poi calare alle 12 e nel pomeriggio dopo la pausa pranzo nasce l’Inverna, vento da Sud, che accompagna i velisti anche fino al tardo pomeriggio.

It is not always possible to moor your boat, but the views from the lake alone are spectacular.

To best plan your sailing trip, remember that the northerly Tramontana wind usually blows on the lake in the morning, getting up at around 7 and dropping at 12 while, in the afternoon, after lunch, the southerly Inverna wind gets up, accompanying sailors until late into the afternoon.

LAVENO La "Portofino" del lago merita di essere visitata in particolare la parte vecchia con i suoi lavatoi e scorci tra i vicoli.

La Funivia che porta in cima al Sasso del Ferro dove si domina il lago e nelle giornate limpide ci regala una vista spettacolare permettendoci di vedere anche Milano.

La scuderia racchiude un'atmosfera inconfondibile, è l'odore dei cavalli e il loro sguardo che ti segue quando ti avvicini.

D'estate o d'inverno, il profumo del fieno, dell'avena, del cuoio dei finimenti e poi, soprattutto, la loro presenza che suscita una sensazione di serena vitalità.

Spazzolo il loro mantello con un movimento che è come una carezza dolce e decisa, piego la gamba che il cavallo mi porge docilmente, pulisco uno per uno gli zoccoli dalla terra, prendo dal baule le copertine, controllo con attenzione l'imboccatura, quindi metto le selle, allaccio le bisacce e mi preparo a montare per iniziare la cavalcata. E i cavalli, pazienti, lì ad aspettarmi, oggi come ieri, con un'espressione familiare negli occhi, da cui immediatamente colgo il loro entusiasmo. Prima di salire, li accarezzo sul muso e loro annusano la mia mano.

Sono Ofelia e Girometta, le mie preferite, cavalle alpine, nate qui, 17 e 14 anni fa. La folta criniera Ofelia, un carattere mite e Girometta, il mantello biondo, serena e tranquilla. È l'alba, il cielo, oggi azzurrissimo, è nitido e solo poche nubi leggere lo attraversano. Con Ofelia e Girometta ho cavalcato sul monte Rosa, sul Monviso, le conosco da quando sono nate, sono un po' come fossero le mie figlie, e loro lo sanno.

Ho preparato il caffè, un po' assonnati e un po' eccitati, facciamo colazione prima di partire, io e Betty. È presto, nelle bisacce c'è il nostro pranzo e l'acqua che non può mancare perché i chilometri saranno almeno trenta e le ore in sella minimo cinque. Con i miei compagni di viaggio do uno sguardo al percorso tracciato, lo riguardo attentamente per soppesare le soste di ristoro per loro, i nostri Haflingher biondi con criniera bianca e la vocazione naturale ad essere cavalli da montagna.

“Racconti al passo” è il nostro progetto a cavallo che, unendo le nostre due passioni, ci ha portato a viaggiare in sella, con tappe inframmezzate da momenti di narrazione per il pubblico, in quell’incredibile scrigno di bellezza offerto dalla natura. Un territorio arricchito da un’ippovia di ben 160 chilometri, con segnaletica e strutture accoglienti per viaggiatori e cavalli, che parte da Caldè, sulle rive del Maggiore, per inerpicarsi tra i boschi e finire al di là della frontiera in territorio elvetico sul Monte Lema. Abbiamo costruito un tour di 12 tappe, 10 nell’Alto Varesotto e Campo dei Fiori: Caldè, Valcuvia, Valceresio, Veddasca, Valdumentina fino a Nasca, Monte Lema.

Da Dumenza a Trezzino girando da Astano, passando dalla Svizzera, questo oggi il tragitto, penso tra me e me. Il mio cavallo sembra saperlo già, come per telepatia.

Partiamo al passo, finalmente. L'inizio è poetico, dolce, emozionante. Viaggiamo così, incontro ai paesaggi da un punto di vista insolito, i nostri fuori pista, li chiamo. Il Maggiore visto dalla Forcora, scendendo verso il lago Delio, si aprono nuovi

orizzonti.

Una cattedrale nel bosco, mi appare così, improvvisamente, e mi lascia senza fiato: un bosco di faggi così perfettamente dritti, come guglie di una cattedrale naturale, la luce li attraversa, ferendo il mio sguardo come in una chiesa, suscitando in me un rispetto quasi sacro. E' la potenza della natura, amplificata dall'essere in sella ad un cavallo. E i faggi lì a fissarmi, grigi e solenni, uno vicino all'altro come soldati schierati, impettiti, mi aprono la strada. La luce che filtra rende la situazione così lirica che non puoi fare a meno di fermarti a contemplarla.

Per salire ad Agra percorriamo la strada del giro del sole. A cavallo ti imbatti nelle radici, nelle quali i cavalli possono inciampare, belle, tortuose, esposte dalla pianta attraversano la strada, ti costringono alla destrezza, lo sguardo a terra, lontano ma vicino. Chiacchieriamo un po', nella strada piena di radici pesanti.

La storia di questi sentieri è scritta dalle radici che incontravano i carri che portavano i primi turisti, ma anche i cavalli che oggi tornano a ripercorrerli.

Incontriamo l’alpe Fontana a Dumenza: un punto panoramico sul lago Maggiore, uno scorcio che sembra rubato. Sento il brusio monotono di una motosega da lontano, la pace rotta dal proprietario di una baita stupefatto al vedere due cavalli. Ci racconta antiche storie dell’alpe, del vino, ci regala un pezzo di formaggio, mentre si fa pomeriggio e vivi cose che non avresti trovato in nessun libro.

I cavalli si dissetano e arriviamo tra i Mulini di Piero. Qui ricostruiamo la vicenda del ratto delle donne di Biegno, leggenda da cui deriva la nascita di Monteviasco, rifugio di malfattori sfuggiti alla giustizia.

Quando passeggi a cavallo, oltre a paesaggi, storie e curiosità, incontri oggetti che potrebbero costituire un museo nomade, le cose dimenticate dal tempo: un falcetto abbandonato, appeso all’albero, un sasso, un oggetto di legno per lavorare il burro, per incidere le pelli, bastoni in una borsa, che alla sera diventano personaggi dei nostri racconti e utilizzati quasi come burattini che parlano.

Siamo a Masciago, dove ci sono cascate suggestive, non un getto solo d’acqua casta, ma scorgiamo il profilo di un bacino di raccolta dell'acqua. Mentre le mie belle compagne si godono il meritato fresco ristoro, penso alla fortunata alchimia che si crea con i nostri cavalli. In questi territori prealpini, dove un cavallo è il solo mezzo per entrare nella natura, con la giusta andatura, quella del passo. Una sorta di innamoramento.

Durante il percorso, si parla ai cavalli con la voce, con le mani, una carezza sulla groppa per gratificarlo bene, lo abbracci, è sudato, affaticato. «Dai «Dai che ce la facciamo», facciamo», gli sussurro.

Un linguaggio che dalla parola si allarga alla gestualità.

Si sviluppa sugli aiuti del cavaliere che stringe le redini per affrontare una salita importante. Le redini di precisione per evitare un grosso sasso, per andare su un sentierino, scovare una via insieme. Non è un viaggio senza ostacoli, anche se è un compagno di famiglia, il cavallo. Un’avventura può capitare e improvvisamente ti trovi di fronte ad un albero caduto, spezzato dal fulmine di un temporale d'estate. Ma c’è intesa fra noi, si supera ogni difficoltà, insieme.

Affetto e rispetto, il cavallo è pronto a ricevere il bene e comprendere le tue risposte. L'andatura è morbida, il suo collo ondeggia e la criniera si muove accarezzata dal vento. Mi faccio largo tra i rami che a volte sono più frondosi, e vedo da lontano il torrente Giona, ne sento il potente vocione. Mi ricorda un nostro spettacolo teatrale con il pubblico e l’acqua che risuona, lanciando i sassi, un concerto intorno alla riva, con uno spartito volubile, tempi e modi dettati da sassi grandi e piccoli.

Contempliamo i paesaggi, siamo arrivati sul pianoro della Forcora. Abbiamo a lungo giocato con i cavalli che delimitavano gli spazi, suonato con i bambini un concerto attraverso il battito di mani sull'abbeveratoio.

Tirarsi fuori da tutto e trovare la semplicità del viaggiare con un compagno con cui hai costruito un legame di fiducia, affetto, reciproca stima, con il quale anche senza parole, nasce un’emozione che vive con lui, un linguaggio fatto di sintonia, come quando si ferma se c’è qualcosa di bello, un cerbiatto o un capriolo, e sembra suggerirti all'orecchio: «guarda! «guarda!». ».

Un cavallo ha antenne diverse dalle tue, una sensibilità particolare: passi nel bosco, anche quando è buio e lui sa come guidarti.

Discovering the beauty around us.

Horse trekking

The atmosphere of a stables is unique with its scent of horses and the way they watch you as you approach them. In both summer and winter the aroma of hay, oats, the leather of their harnesses and, above all, the horses themselves imbue us with the serene vitality they transmit.

I brush their coats with a movement which is like a gentle but decisive caress, bend the legs that they docilely stretch out to me and brush the soil off their hooves one at a time, take the blankets out of the trunk, check the bit carefully and then put the saddle on, tie on the saddlebags and get ready to get on to start my ride. And the horses

Switzerland - this is today's route, I muse. My horse seems already to know, as if by telepathy.

We set off at a trot, finally. The start is poetic, gentle, moving.

We travel on like this meeting landscapes which are in some way unusual, our off route, we call them. Lake Maggiore seen from Forcora, descending towards Lake Delio and new horizons open up.

A cathedral in the forest - that's how it looks to me - appearing suddenly and taking my breath away: a forest of perfectly straight beech trees like the spires of a natural cathedral with dappled sunlight as penetrating as that of a church and provoking the same

wait patiently there for me just as they did yesterday with a familiar expression in their eyes which shows their enthusiasm. Before I get on I stroke their faces and they sniff my hands.

They are Ofelia and Girometta, my favourites, Alpine horses born here 17 and 14 years ago - Ofelia's lush mane and mild character and Girometta's blond coat, serene and easy going personality.

It's dawn and the sky is deep blue and clear with just a few light clouds flitting across it. I have ridden across Mount Rosa and Monviso with Ofelia and Girometta and I've known them since they were born. It's a little like a father daughter relationship and they know it.

I've made some coffee and, a little sleepy and a little excited, Betty and I have breakfast before setting off. It's early and the saddlebags are packed with our lunch and the water we need because the journey is at least 30 kilometres and five hours in the saddle. I have a look at the route with my travel companions, checking it carefully to weigh up the rest breaks for them, our blond Haflingers with their white manes with their natural vocation as mountain horses.

Racconti al Passo is the name of our horse riding project, one which brings together our two passions and takes us travelling on horseback with stages punctuated by moments in which we tell our story to the public in that incredible treasure trove of beauty which nature offers us. The area has a bridle path which is a good 160 kilometres long with waysigns and accommodation for travellers and their horses starting from Caldè, on the banks of Lake Maggiore, before winding through forests via the Swiss border to Mount Lema.

We have put together a 12 stage tour, 10 in Alto Varesotto and Campo dei Fiori: Caldè, Valcuvia, Valceresio, Veddasca, Valdumentina to Nasca, Mount Lema.

quasi sacred respect. It is the power of nature amplified by being in the saddle, on horseback. And the beech trees there staring back at me, grey and solemn, one next to the other like ranked upright soldiers opening the way to me. The light filtering through makes for such a lyrical scenario that there is nothing to do but stop to contemplate it.

To continue uphill to Agra we take the trip around the sun route. On horseback you come across roots which horses can trip on, exquisite, tortuous, across the road forcing us into dexterity, our eyes on the ground, far off but close by. We chat a little in the path full of large roots.

The history of these byways is written in the roots encountered by the carts carrying the area's first visitors and also the horses returning today to these paths.

We meet the Fontana Alps at Dumenza, a panoramic point on Lake Maggiore, a stolen view. I can hear the buzzing of a distant chainsaw, the peace broken by a mountain hut owner left speechless by the sight of two horses. It reminds me of a theatre performance with the spectators and the thundering water pushing at the stones, a concert around its banks with a noisy script, rhythm and style dictated by stones both large and small.

We contemplate the landscape now that we have arrived at the Forcora plateau. We've played games with the horses, marking out the space for some time, played concerts with children by clapping our hands on the drinking trough.

«Seguimi Seguimi». ». La voce di Antonio, nitidamente, risuona dentro la piccola cabina del suo aliante. A volte basta una semplice parola a far breccia nel cuore. Anche pronunciata, e ascoltata, via radio, ad alta quota, sopra i cieli di Rieti. E uno sguardo, un sorriso, misto di audacia e fiducia. E quell’attrazione irrazionale, e inequivocabile, che chiamiamo amore.

La giornata è stupenda, è il caldo agosto 1978, il cielo, turchese, attraversato da una competizione di alianti.

Margherita Acquaderni, Margot per gli amici, figlia di un pilota, ardimentosa ventenne, indossa una tuta azzurra e una bandana dello stesso colore. È la sua divisa portafortuna, quando affronta il volo. E questa è la sua prima gara. Ha preso il brevetto di volo a Ferrara solo qualche settimana prima.

Vento da Ovest, piccole nuvolette, come baffetti bianchi, trapuntano il cielo, rendono il volo indimenticabile. Margherita ha il numero 57, Antonio il 53. Antonio le suggerisce una diversa rotta da intraprendere, in volo. È solo un consiglio, i due piloti non si conoscono ancora, ma Margherita decide di fidarsi. È il destino di due vite che si intrecciano in volo, prima ancora che sulla terra. E Margherita razionale, attenta, concentrata, segue Antonio non solo nei cieli ma, lei che è nata a Bologna, inizia a frequentare colui che diventerà suo marito, a Varese.

E a Varese, per quegli straordinari incontri che tramano le nostre vite, Margherita conosce Adele, una aviatrice, l’Aviatrice, tra i pionieri della disciplina, che diventerà la sua seconda mamma, compagna di voli, record, sfide impossibili.

Adele Orsi, una donna eccezionale, protagonista indiscussa del volo a vela in Italia, sempre dietro le quinte e sempre pronta a volare, scrupolosa e sorridente, la prima a salire a bordo dell’aliante e l’ultima ad atterrare, moglie di Giorgio Orsi, entrambi animati da una passione indomita per il volo che insieme realizzano, costruendo il campo di volo, l’Aereoclub,

a Calcinate. Lei che, dal cielo, in volo aveva visto un lembo di terra di suo padre e ha pensato che quello era il posto giusto, per decollare, per sognare.

Adele è una leggenda, anche per Margot. E Adele e Margherita diventano amiche inseparabili. È Adele, donna strepitosa, che di mattina alle cinque, alza la cornetta e chiama Margherita: «Oggi Oggi proviamo un record, stamattina vorrei volare a Varese, vieni!». vieni! ». Un pizzico di paura sempre in tasca, come diceva Walter Vergani e il sacro rispetto della natura. Non osare mai troppo, il cielo in cui decolli non è mai lo stesso, è un foglio sempre bianco da pennellare, con passione e dedizione.

Oggi Margherita accompagna un’amica in un biposto, occorre essere concentrati, mi dice, i pensieri e i problemi ancorati a terra. Il decollo in aria dell’aliante è legato all’aereo a motore, da un cavo di traino. Da terra sembra un filo di seta. Quando si stacca al Campo dei Fiori, il vento in faccia, le radiazioni del sole fanno sì che l’aria salga più di quanto non scenda l’aliante.

Il filo si stacca, come il cordone ombelicale, ed è una sensazione di libertà estrema, il pilota di fronte a se stesso, senza veli. Il ronzio del motore dell’aereo si allontana, nelle orecchie senti solo il fruscio, amico, meraviglioso, dell’aria sulle ali.

Ogni volo è unico, imprevedibile, stupendo, perché ogni giorno

è diverso, irripetibile e vento e sole, elementi indispensabili, scrivono sempre nuovi copioni, che i piloti cercano, con pazienza e cura, di studiare e interpretare. Non puoi mettere la freccia e accostare, il bello del volo è questa libertà creativa in cui devi dosare la capacità, interpretando se il cielo è alla tua altezza.

Vedo l’aliante sopra il Sacro Monte, Margot mi diceva di conoscere a memoria le cappelle, una per una, e poi la Martica, il Monte Generoso, questo il percorso verso Est. Chissà quale sarà il loro viaggio di oggi: verso nord i Sette Termini, il Lema, il Tamaro, oppure a Ovest, il Monte Nudo, da dove partono i parapendii, il Mottarone, volando sopra il Maggiore, arrivando al Monte Zeda a Piancavallo. L’obiettivo di un pilota di volo a vela è fare tanti chilometri, viaggiare, conoscere nuovi scenari, arrivare sempre più in là, con una velocità di crociera da 120 a 250 km orari. Fino alle Alpi, se possibile, sempre cullando il sogno di nuovi record, mille chilometri e più, picchiando, cabrando, rollando. Ed ecco le Dolomiti, che Margherita descrive, commuovendosi, come una cattedrale naturale.

La pedaliera fa andare il timone direzionale, le mani sulla cloche, le montagne che vedi avvicinarsi, come il Monte Rosa, che da corona si trasforma in un grande catino, dai colori straordinari e una maestà che suscita quasi soggezione. Soar cradled by the Alps "Follow me". Antonio's voice can clearly be heard in the small cabin of his glider. Sometimes, just one word is all that is needed to find a way into my heart. Even where it is spoken and listened to, via radio, flying high above the skies of Rieti. And a look, a smile smacking of courage and trust. It is this irrational and unmistakable attraction which they call love.

It is a splendid day, the hot August of 1978, the sky is turquoise and there is a gliding competition. Margherita Acquaderni, Margot to her friends, the daughter of a pilot, a nervy twenty-something year old, is wearing blue overalls and a matching colour bandana. It is her lucky outfit when flying. This is her first competition. She was only awarded her flying licence from Ferrara a few weeks beforehand.

Western winds, small clouds that resemble white moustaches are littered across the sky, making the flight unforgettable. Margherita is donning number 57 and Antonio number 53. Antonio suggests taking a different flight path. It is only a recommendation, the two pilots do not even know each other yet, however Margherita decides to trust him. It is their destiny to meet whilst flying even before they have met on terra firma. The rational, careful, focused Margherita follows Antonio not just in the skies but frequently makes the journey from her native city of Bologna to Varese to meet him, he who would later become her husband.

"My t-shirt with wings" she tells me, embracing the small roof of her glider whilst she reveals: "I was almost named Aliantina (little wing) when I was born". A bit like Liala, baptised by Annunzio, even if Margherita does not have wings in her name, she surely does in her heart and eyes.

«Per Per me la bici è il mezzo di trasporto del futuro ed è perfetta per il turismo. Qui è bellissimo poter pedalare con una pista ciclabile così: vedi i boschi e il lago, è anche molto ombreggiato per cui si sta bene anche d'estate. È poi un giro davvero adatto a tutti. Mi piace tantissimo il tratto prima di arrivare a Gavirate: esci dal bosco, il panorama ti si apre davanti agli occhi, quindi vedi le montagne, è molto suggestivo. C'è il tratto dove puoi scendere verso il pontile, lì si fanno foto fantastiche, e c'è quel pezzo in cui pedali proprio al bordo del lago, hai proprio tutta l'acqua al tuo fianco. È un tesoro incredibile. Avere i laghi così vicini è una ricchezza grandissima da poter sfruttare in tutti i modi possibili. C'è una richiesta di cicloturismo pazzesca in tutto il mondo e qua c'è qualsiasi cosa». cosa».

«Siamo Siamo stati qui due giorni per registrare la puntata, abbiamo fatto il percorso con delle piccole fermate per dare qualche consiglio su cosa fare durante il giro. Siamo partiti dalla città, da villa Recalcati, per poi scendere giù al lago e percorrere la pista ciclabile in senso orario. Ricordo il passaggio a Mustonate, diventato per me un must assoluto, e l'inizio del percorso dalla Schiranna. Come facciamo a ogni puntata scendiamo dalla bici per tutte le attività che ci sono da fare, come visitare la coltivazione di mirtilli al Gaggio o il giro in barca per vedere l'isolino Virginia. Ho preso anche una lezione di canottaggio da un istruttore di Gavirate. Soltanto per mancanza di tempo non ho volato sul lago col Volo a Vela all'Aeroclub di Calcinate, però ho fatto un po' di pratica a terra e ho capito che giro meraviglioso sia». sia».

Non è un'estate caldissima, ma proprio in quei giorni di giugno la temperatura tocca i 37 gradi. Girano in tre, soltanto due cameraman e lei, che conduce e racconta con la curiosità di chi viaggia in posti nuovi. E senza trucco.

«Verso Verso sera avevamo altre riprese da fare, mi guardo al volo in uno specchietto e mi vedo stravolta, ma non c'è staff al seguito quindi si va avanti! Il bello è che in quel programma è proprio vero tutto, non c'è tempo per la finzione. Sulla ciclabile non si può andare né in moto né su mezzi elettrici, che in genere su alcuni tratti usiamo per riprese veloci. Eravamo un po' in difficoltà, nonostante avessimo con noi un entourage di circa venti persone che ci ha voluto accompagnare. Quindi vedevo i due cameraman su una sola bicicletta, uno pedalava e

l'altro riprendeva, senza andare molto veloce… insomma ce l'abbiamo fatta.

Non vedo prima il posto che andiamo a visitare, quindi le mie espressioni ed emozioni le trasmetto dal vivo così come vengono. Vedere un paesaggio dalla sella della bici non è come vederlo dal finestrino di una macchina. Sei immerso nella natura, nei profumi, negli odori, nell'incontrare persone, gli sguardi. È così che ho scoperto anche la città. Milano ho iniziato ad amarla in bicicletta, potevo fare percorsi secondari o attraversare un parco anziché restare in coda al semaforo. Il centro di Varese è delizioso in bici e appena fuori c'è il parco Campo dei Fiori con bellissime passeggiate.

Uno dei miei percorsi preferiti è proprio dall'Osservatorio di Campo dei Fiori fino al Forte di Orino, anche quello è un giro che possono fare tutti, d'inverno credo che sia ancora più suggestivo, è bellissimo. Anche il Chiostro di Voltorre è da vedere. E presto andremo a Monate e poi al lago Maggiore, è come un mare coi monti, una meraviglia, e ho già visitato l'Eremo di Santa Caterina del Sasso che mi è piaciuto da morire.

Quando arrivi a Varese, si vede subito il Monte Rosa in lontananza e ogni volta lo ammiro. Tutte le sere al tramonto è uno spettacolo, d'inverno mi piace ancora di più. Forse è quando cresci che senti dentro di te che della bellezza della natura non se ne ha mai abbastanza. Io allora vado in giro e abbraccio gli alberi...». alberi...».

Le brillano gli occhi mentre descrive i percorsi del territorio varesino che ha scoperto finora. Per Filippa Lagerbäck, svedese ma da anni in Italia, la bici è libertà, natura, gioia.

«Ho Ho sempre pedalato, fin da quando ero piccola, la bici è un po' il simbolo della mia libertà: era un mezzo, il mio primo mezzo, con cui potevo spostarmi velocemente e andare con gli amici a fare il bagno al lago. Si lanciava la sfida a chi faceva il primo bagno dell'anno. Una volta l'ho fatto il primo di maggio, c'era ancora il ghiaccio. A Stoccolma c'è anche il mare che però si riscalda molto più lentamente, perciò è il lago il nostro punto di riferimento.

Con una bicicletta sei indipendente, scopri totalmente un altro modo di vedere le cose, sei più felice. E se proprio non diluvia si va lo stesso. Ricordo un episodio in Svezia, in bici con mio papà, io incinta al quarto mese, all'improvviso viene giù una pioggia pesante. Non era acqua ma proprio ghiaccio. Chiedevo se non fosse il caso di tornare indietro, ma lui "Che dici! Siamo vichinghi noi, vai avanti!". Ecco, questa è un po' la nostra filosofia...». filosofia... ».

Filippa Lagerbäck sostiene e incentiva l'uso della bici come mezzo di trasporto, più che per sport proprio per la sua sostenibilità. Non si definisce un'integralista della bici, ma trova che sia una passione che si possa sfruttare anche nel quotidiano. Uno stile di vita un po' più green è possibile ed è piacevole.

«Io Io mi sono fatta prendere da questa passione. Qui è veramente pieno di ciclisti e trovo così bello che ci siano tanti gruppi, donne, uomini, di tutte le età, che pedalano e dopo si fermano al bar, è uno stile di vita. Non avrei mai pensato di mettermi la tuta da bici col pannolone e mettermi in sella, davvero per me era impensabile. Però mai dire mai, anche se avevo un'idea romantica della bicicletta, con la gonna, il cestino di vimini, il picnic... e pensare invece che io col pannolone da ciclista ho intervistato chiunque!

E ho scelto il lago di Varese anche per uno speciale giro in bici con me, messo in palio da un’associazione per una raccolta fondi per ragazzi autistici: ho fatto venire qui il vincitore con il figlio ed è stato straordinario. Loro sono rimasti affascinati dal posto, inoltre in bicicletta ti conosci subito di più, nasce una simpatia, fai qualcosa insieme, ti aiuta a rompere il ghiaccio, sei subito alla pari, e se fai un po' di fatica la condividi». condividi».

On a bicycle with Filippa Lagerbäck, etween the blue lakes and the Monte Rosa «I believe bikes are the transport of the future, and they are perfect for tourism. It is wonderful to be able to ride, here, along a surfaced cycle track such as this: you see the woods and the lake, and it’s also very shady so it’s pleasant even in summer. What’s more, the circuit is suitable for everyone. I love the stretch before you get to Gavirate: you come out of the wood and a very picturesque view of the mountains opens up before your eyes. There’s a section where you ride downhill towards the landing stage and another where you cycle along the very edge of the lake with the water right beside you.

It is an incredible gem. Having the lakes so close is a real privilege to be enjoyed in every possible way. Bicycle tourism is in huge demand all over the world, and this place has everything».

Filippa Lagerbäck, TV presenter and friend to the environment, talks about her passion, and remembers that episode of In bici con Filippa (On a bike with Filippa), shown on the Italian Sky 214 Bike Channel, filmed on the Lake Varese cycle track, in which she shows viewers everything there is to do in the surrounding area, on or off a bike.

«We were here for two days to shoot the episode, and we did the whole route with a few short stops to give tips on things do during the ride. We started in the city, at Villa Recalcati, and then rode down to the lake and followed the track clockwise. I remember the ride to the small village of Mustonate, now an absolute must for me, and the start of the ride from the Schiranna district of Varese. As in every episode, we dismounted to try all available activities, such as visiting the bilberry crops at the Gaggio farm or taking a boat trip to see the little island of Virginia. I also had a rowing lesson with an instructor from Gavirate. Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to go gliding with the Calcinate Aeroclub and fly over the lake but I had a little try on the ground and could see how amazing it must be».

The summer of 2014 was not particularly hot but, in that period of June, temperatures reached 37 degrees. You ride as a team of three: two cameramen and yourself, presenting and describing with the curiosity of one travelling to new places and without artifice.

«Towards the evening we had more shooting to do. I looked in a little mirror and saw that I looked a mess, but I had no staff behind me so on I went! The nice thing about that programme is that everything

is completely genuine; no time for pretence. No motorbikes or even electric vehicles, which we usually use for quick takes on some sections, are allowed on the cycle track. We had some difficulty, despite having an entourage of about twenty people who wanted to accompany us, including the police chief. So I had two cameramen sharing a bicycle, one pedalling and the other shooting, not going very fast… but we did it.

I don’t see the places we’re going to visit beforehand, so my expressions and emotions are all filmed “live”. Seeing scenery from the saddle of a bike is very different to seeing it from a car window.

You immerse yourself in nature and the scents and smells, and meet people face to face.

That’s also how I explored the city. I first fell in love with Milan on a bicycle; I could take minor roads or cut through parks rather than queuing at traffic lights. The centre of Varese is delightful by bike, and just outside it is the Campo dei Fiori Park with stunning walks.

Filippa Lagerbäck supports and promotes the use of a bike as a means of transport, rather than simply for sport, due to its sustainability.

While she does not describe herself as a fundamentalist when it comes to bikes, she believes it is a passion that can also be enjoyed in everyday life. She has written a book, called Io pedalo e tu? (I Pedal, and You?), Gribaudo, 2013, and Sky is has contacted her about the project on the Bike Channel.

«My mission is to be able to say to everybody, “look, you can do it. If I, who work in television and fashion, always get around on my bicycle then so can you. And yes, I use a car as well: I’m not a hypocrite and I don’t think we should ever be too radical in our choices.

As soon as you arrive in Varese, you can see the Monte Rosa mountain in the distance, and I always admire it. The sunset is spectacular every evening, and I like it even better in winter. Perhaps it’s when you grow up that you feel, deep down, that you can never get enough of the beauty of nature. So I go out exploring and hug the trees…»

Some organisation and new support structures are needed, but Varese already has everything and its cycle track is truly fantastic.

«I have always cycled, since I was little. For me, a bike sort of symbolises freedom: it was a way (the first for me) of getting around quickly and going swimming in the lake with my friends. It was always a contest to see who would take the first dip of the year. Once, I swam on the first of May, when there was still ice. In Stockholm there’s the sea as well, although that takes much longer to warm up, so the lake is our point of reference.

On a bicycle you’re independent, you discover a whole new way of seeing things, and you’re happier. And, provided that it is not pouring, you just go. I remember one time in Sweden, cycling with my dad, when I was four months pregnant, and the heavens suddenly opened. It wasn’t water; it was literally ice. I asked if we should turn

cyclists, and I really like that there are so many groups - women and men of all ages – who go cycling and then stop at a café for a drink. It’s a lifestyle. I would never have imagined myself putting on padded cycling shorts and getting astride a bike; it simply wasn’t me. Never say never, though: I used to have a romantic idea of riding off for a picnic on a bicycle with a wicker basket, wearing a skirt … and yet I have interviewed all kinds of people wearing padded shorts!

I also chose Lake Varese for a special bike ride, put on by a fundraising organisation for autistic kids: I brought the winner here with his son to ride with me, and it was amazing. They were enchanted with the place, and cycling is also a great way to get to know each other and build a bond by doing something together; it helps to break the ice and puts you on an equal footing and, if it’s hard work then you’re in it together».

Il Lago di Varese è uno dei patrimoni naturali e paesaggistici più preziosi della provincia.

Per valorizzare questo splendido ambiente è stata completata la realizzazione di una pista ciclabile con fondo in calcestruzzo e asfalto che circonda tutto il perimetro dello specchio d’acqua e che rappresenta uno dei più lunghi percorsi ciclabili d’Europa. Sono percorribili 27 km che si snodano tra boschi e prati, consentendo a ciclisti e podisti di ammirare il lago da ogni prospettiva. Il percorso parte da Varese Schiranna e costeggia tra l’altro la riserva naturale di Biandronno. È accessibile anche a disabili, bambini ed anziani, essendo prevalentemente in piano, ed è percorribile sia a piedi sia con le biciclette.

Lake Varese Cycle Track

Lake Varese is one of the province’s most cherished natural and scenic treasures.

To promote enjoyment of this beautiful

setting, a concrete and tarmac-surfaced cycle track has been created around the entire circumference of the lake and constituting one of Europe’s longest cycle routes. 27 km of the track wind through woods and meadows, allowing cyclists and those on foot to admire the lake from every perspective. The route begins in the Schiranna district of Varese and passes beauty spots including the Biandronno nature reserve.It is also accessible to the disabled, children and the elderly, being predominantly flat, and can be enjoyed both on foot and by bicycle.

Pista ciclabile - Lago di Comabbio

La pista ciclabile del lago di Comabbio è lunga una decina di chilometri. Partendo da Ternate in prossimità del lido, la pista si snoda prendendo la destra verso Comabbio, mentre prendendo la sinistra verso Varano Borghi dopo 2 km si incontra

il bivio per la pista di collegamento con il lago di Varese. Il percorso regala incantevoli scorci di paesaggio, immersi in un’ambiente naturale originale, interessante la scelta costruttiva di una pedana in legno lunga 500 m che permette di pedalare sospesi sull’acqua.

Lake Comabbio Cycle Track

The Lake Comabbio cycle track is about ten kilometres long. The track starts in Ternate, near the lido, and winds along. If you bear right, it takes you towards Comabbio while the track to the left leads to Varanno Borghi, meeting the junction with the connecting track to Lake Varese after 2 km. This route offers enchanting views of the landscape, immersed in an original natural setting, and the considerate construction of a 500m-long wooden platform allows cyclists to ride suspended over the water.

«Ma Ma cosa ci trovi di bello nel golf?». golf?». La domanda arriva in genere tra il caffè e l’ammazzacaffé, quando le difese si sono ormai abbassate, complici l’iperattività dei succhi gastrici e i generosi brindisi rimbalzati da un capo all’altro dell’allegra tavolata.

In effetti è sempre difficile codificare un’infatuazione. «Mi «Mi vuoi bene? Perché mi vuoi bene?» bene?» chiedeva lei con occhi languidi mentre attraversavamo la nostra giovinezza. E già allora non sapevo bene cosa rispondere. «Ti «Ti voglio bene e basta», basta», tagliavo corto. Aggiungendo poi - gli studi classici e la logica razionale erano di grande aiuto in questi casi - che se l’uomo sapesse smontare i meccanismi dell’amore, saprebbe anche alla fine riprodurlo. E così lo svuoterebbe, riducendolo a una reazione chimica. Cosa che toglierebbe senso e poesia alla vita.

In effetti non so dire esattamente cosa ci sia di così coinvolgente nel golf. Forse i luoghi dove si pratica, le mille sfumature di verde che ti abbracciano e sono capaci di sedurti molto più di quelle del grigio. E poi il silenzio dei fairways fairways,, merce rara al giorno d’oggi, con i timpani sotto pressione dalla mattina alla sera per lavoro, caos del traffico, telefonini e cuffiette. O forse il fascino è tutto racchiuso in quel movimento di pochi secondi nel quale devi riuscire a concatenare i gesti in una certa sequenza per vedere schizzar via la pallina verso la buca, seguirla con lo sguardo nel cielo, udire il tonfo lontano dell’atterraggio in green e pregustare il gorgoglìo con il quale verrà inghiottita dalla buca dopo un facile putt.

Mi consola sapere che non sono il solo a subire questo fascino, se è vero che ogni anno in tutto il mondo ci sono la bellezza di 70 milioni di golfisti e che di questi, uno su quattro parte per una vacanza con la sua bella sacca al seguito. E non sono turisti da poco: in media si fermano in albergo sette giorni contro i tre o quattro dei vacanzieri che non rincorrono una pallina bianca tra una buca e l’altra. Non solo: sempre secondo la statistica, i golfisti spendono tre volte più degli altri e - attenzione - non per pagarsi i servizi dei campi da golf. Solo il 7% della spesa è riconducibile in qualche modo al mondo che ruota intorno ai green (ingressi, noleggio dell’attrezzatura, eccetera). La parte del leone la fanno l’alloggio (29 per cento) e i trasporti (25%), seguiti da cibo (21%), divertimenti (9%) e shopping (5%). Tradotto in cifre, questo mulinare di ferri, legni e palline produce nel mondo un giro d’affari di 30 miliardi di euro.

In Europa a beneficiarne in misura maggiore è la Spagna, che di questa torta si è accaparrata una fetta da 4,2 miliardi di euro. Merito del clima, certo, ma anche della politica turistica che in questi anni ha trasformato larghe zone del Paese in una specie di Eldorado golfistica. A cominciare dall’Andalusia, dove 132 percorsi ospitano ogni anno 2 milioni di giri di golf, tre

quarti dei quali effettuati da stranieri. La Scozia, che pure di questo gioco è ritenuta la capitale, si ferma a un giro d’affari di 319 milioni di euro. Gli oltre 500 percorsi scozzesi pagano un dazio pesante al clima, ma ciò non impedisce all’Old Course di St. Andrews, probabilmente le diciotto buche più famose del mondo, di staccare ogni anno 44mila ingressi giornalieri (i golfisti li chiamano green fee), in pratica 120 persone al giorno pronte a sborsare anche 180 euro per poter provare l’ebbrezza di calcare i fairways che hanno fatto la storia di questo sport.

Anche in Italia il golf produce un fatturato considerevole. Una ricerca commissionata qualche anno fa dalla Federgolf alla Protiviti aveva quantificato in 350 milioni di euro il giro d’affari legato ai green. Soldi usciti dalle tasche dei giocatori nostrani (sono un po’ meno di 100.000, con una leggera flessione nell’ultimo periodo dopo anni di costante crescita) e dei turisti stranieri che, attratti dal clima e dall’universo cultural-eno-gastronomico, scelgono località della Penisola per dare libero sfogo alla loro voglia di swing. L’offerta, d’altra parte, è di tutto rispetto: oltre 180 campi regolamentari da 9 a 36 buche, una quarantina di impianti promozionali da 3 a 9 buche, più di 100 campi pratica dove è possibile imparare e perfezionare il gesto tecnico a costi molto contenuti.

Anche da queste parti ce n’è per tutti i gusti. Il Panorama di Varese, nove buche praticamente in città, ogni anno sforna centinaia di nuovi adepti. Merito dell’approccio molto semplice e informale. Niente a che vedere con l’immagine ormai ingiallita dello sport d’élite, costoso e con la puzza sotto il naso.

Con 85 euro chi vuole imparare ha a disposizione tre lezioni da mezz’ora con il maestro, un mese di frequenza libera e gratuita al campo pratica e montagne di palline per forgiare lo swing swing,, ossia il movimento base. Una giornata di sci costa molto di più, ma nessuno si sogna di catalogare cristiania e serpentine tra le attività aristocratiche. Il campo - 9 buche par 66 - è piuttosto delicato. La potenza qui non serve: meglio usare il fosforo e la precisione per domarlo.

Sui pendii che da Luvinate scendono verso il lago, da 82 anni il Golf Club Varese rappresenta una specie di tesi di laurea per i giocatori di ogni livello. Su quei green hanno insegnato leggende del golf italiano - il mitico Lillo Angelini su tutti - e hanno tirato i primi colpi intere generazioni di campioni. Il percorso mette a dura prova la tecnica e i polmoni, con i suoi saliscendi e la ricca vegetazione a delimitare ogni buca. Poi arrivi sul tee di partenza della 10, vedi ai tuoi piedi il Lago di Varese, l’isolino Virginia, il Monte Rosa sullo sfondo e restare concentrato solo sulla palla è quasi impossibile. Per fortuna è una buca facile: Gannon, Blandford e Baldovino Dassù, che hanno messo mano al progetto, non hanno voluto infierire.

E terminate le 18 buche, un’altra meraviglia: il vecchio monastero benedettino di Sant’Antonino, che a partire dal XII secolo accoglieva i pellegrini, ora è diventato una confortevole club house, scenografia indimenticabile dove anche pagare la birra dopo una sconfitta in green diventa quasi un piacere.

A Travedona Monate il Golf dei Laghi da ventitré anni stuzzica le capacità dei golfisti di ogni livello. Disegnato tra il lago di Monate e il Maggiore, è un riuscito compendio di buche dalle caratteristiche diverse: 6 nel piano, per far divertire i giocatori potenti; altre 6 nel bosco, per avvantaggiare quelli precisi; le ultime 6, infine, su e giù dalla collina, per testare il fisico e le capacità di adattamento alle ondulazioni. Anche qui la club house è originale: è stata ricavata ristrutturando le antiche scuderie dei Visconti che da queste parti a Villa la Motta, proprio sopra gli attuali green, avevano un’antica residenza. Il Circolo è a impronta sportiva, lontano dai cliché dei club esclusivi, e con una buona rappresentanza di giovani giocatori, a renderlo vivace e dinamico.

A Solbiate Olona il Golf Club Le Robinie porta la prestigiosa firma di Jack Nicklaus, una delle figure leggendarie del golf anni Sessanta e Settanta. Lo chiamavano l’Orso d’Oro e ha tuttora un record difficilmente eguagliabile: 18 vittorie nei tornei più prestigiosi del mondo (i cosiddetti majors). Tiger Woods, che lo insegue con 14 centri, sembrava destinato a soffiargli il primato, ma negli ultimi tempi numerose traversie ne hanno rallentato parecchio la rincorsa. Federico Brambilla, vulcanico presidente del Circolo, ogni giorno ne inventa una per avvicinare a prezzi contenuti nuovi giocatori al golf. Può contare su un percorso che, se non ha i panorami alpini e lacustri di quelli del nord della provincia, è sempre molto ben tenuto e regala sensazioni incantevoli dal tee di partenza fino al green. A patto, ovviamente, di non farsi sgambettare dagli enormi bunker (depressioni riempite di sabbia), dai laghi e dai laghetti che Nicklaus ha sparso lungo le buche per mettere un po’ di pepe alla sfida tra il campo e il giocatore.

Ma è difficile spiegare le sottili differenze tra un percorso e l’altro, gli intriganti confronti che ogni buca ti lancia, la sensazione di piacere quasi fisico che evoca ogni colpo riuscito.

«Di Di bello nel golf ci trovo tutto» tutto» è, alla fine, la risposta piuttosto sbrigativa.

Ma poi, siccome la felicità è vera soltanto se condivisa, dopo il sorso di limoncello provi a lanciare l’amo: «Perché «Perché domani non vieni a provare anche tu? Così lo capisci da solo solo». ».

The beauty of golf, in the Land of Lakes "What's good about golf?" The question is put forward after drinking coffee and before beginning on the after-meal brandy, when guards are down, gastric juices are working away and the generous round of drinks have made their way down the happy table of people.

It is always difficult to reason a passion. "Do you love me?" "Why do you love me?" she would ask with lingering eyes during our days of youth. Even at the time, I did not know what to answer. "I love you and that's enough", keeping it short. I would then add - classical studies and rational logic were of great help during such cases - if man was able to take part the components of love, he would then be able to reproduce them. In this way, I took them apart, reducing it to a chemical reaction. An element which would remove sense and poetry from life.

In actual fact, I do not really know what is so inviting about golf. Perhaps the locations where we play, the

What is more: according to statistics, golfers spend three times as much as others and - pay attention now - not just in terms of paying for golf-related services.

Money from the pockets of local golfers (just under 100,000, with a slight decline following years of constant growth) and foreign tourists who, attracted to the climate and culture-eno-gastronomy sphere, select Italy to give free reign to their swing. Then again, the offer, is great: over 180 regulatory courses with 9 to 36 holes, about forty promotional facilities with 3 to 9 holes, over 100 playing courses where you can affordably learn and improve technique.

Straddling Lake Monate and Lake Maggiore, it marks a successful collection of holes of various characteristics: 6 on flat land for the entertainment of strong players, 6 within woodland benefiting accurate players, and finally the last 6 on hills to test the fitness and ability to navigate windy stretches. Even the club house is unique: it was rebuilt and the ancient stables of the Viscounts were

swing, that is the basic movement. A day's skiing costs much more, and nobody would think of listing Christy and Serpentine as aristocratic activities. The course - 9 holes par 66 - is rather tactful. Power is not required: it is better to overcome it using endurance and accuracy.

On the hills which span from Luvinate to the lake, for 82 years, the Golf Club Varese has represented a type of graduation thesis for players of all levels.

Italian golf legends have taught on these very greens - the legendary Lillo Angelini above all - and generations of champions first played here. The course truly tests technique and fitness, with its number of number of rises and descents and the rich plantlife surrounding every hole. Upon arriving at the 10 tee area, lying at your

He focuses on the fact that although it does not boast the alpine and lake views like those to the north of the province, it is always well-maintained and provides magical sensations right from the tee to the actual course. Provided that, obviously you do not wrongfoot into the huge bunkers (holes filled with sand), the lakes and mini lakes which Nicklaus has littered amongst the holes to increase the difficulty of the challenge for players.

It is however difficult to explain the subtle differences between one golf course and another, the fascinating challenges each hole presents, the enjoyable feeling, almost physical in nature, which each successful strike evokes.

"I find everything about golf great", is, after all is said and done, the shortest response.

Seeing as though happiness is only so when shared, after taking a sip of limoncello, attempt to bait the hook: "Why don't you give it a go tomorrow? Then you will understand".

Il mio primo ricordo della montagna?

Avevo quattordici anni quando ho fatto la mia prima salita alpinistica, con Luigi Ossola, in Val Masino. Dovevo rimanere nel rifugio, ma Luigi, che mi aveva preso sotto la sua ala, mi portò con sé. Essere legato alla corda di un grande alpinista come lui è stato, per me ragazzino, fonte d’orgoglio e felicità, una felicità tanto più grande perché, in quel momento, del tutto inaspettata.

Del resto sono, come si usa dire, “figlio d’arte”, mio padre Carlo - detto “Rouge” - era un alpinista, presidente del CAI Varese negli anni ’60 e direttore della nostra scuola d’alpinismo e sci alpinismo intitolata a “Remo e Renzo Minazzi”, fondata da Mario Bisaccia

negli anni ’50. Perciò appassionarmi alla montagna è stato semplice, per me come per i miei quattro fratelli.

Per godere la montagna non è però necessario essere alpinisti o raggiungere pareti inviolate appannaggio dei più qualificati. Non c’è bisogno neppure di andare lontano. Per fare una bella escursione, all’aria aperta, anche le nostre splendide Prealpi offrono percorsi selvaggi, suggestivi, che vanno affrontati con consapevolezza e competenza; al Campo dei Fiori, come al Monte Lema, solo per citare due mete facilmente raggiungibili con un’escursione giornaliera da Varese per chi sceglie di soggiornarvi.

La montagna è infatti bella, anzi

bellissima, ma è severa, anche fuori dalla porta di casa, d’estate come d’inverno, quando il manto nevoso rappresenta una variabile che può aumentarne i rischi.

Si parte spesso al mattino presto in funzione delle mete da raggiungere. Per salire, ad esempio, al Monte Lema, a inizio del mese di giugno quando i prati della vetta sono in fioritura, si parte relativamente presto, intorno alle sette del mattino. L’itinerario va preparato e studiato attentamente sulla carta topografica, in anticipo il giorno prima, quando occorre anche preparare lo zaino.

Ogni escursionista deve avere la propria dotazione personale completa: abbigliamento adeguato all’escursione, indumenti di ricambio e una giacca a vento, un maglioncino, le pedule, naturalmente, e i calzettoni. Un berretto non può mancare, nel mio caso è bianco di cotone, o di lana ad altitudini maggiori, e gli occhiali da sole. Nello zaino quanto necessario per sostenersi nel corso della giornata, panini, barrette energetiche, nel mio caso una mela e un pezzetto di grana; essenziali sono l’acqua e mezzo litro di tè ben zuccherato e poi biscotti secchi e qualche uvetta passa, necessari ingredienti per dare energia.

Qualcuno, i più ghiotti, porta altre cose da gustare che contribuiscono a rendere ancora più piacevole una giornata di svago; immancabili per me i sottaceti, fatti in casa, una tradizione di famiglia; perché ognuno ha il suo piccolo tesoro con sé, da gustare e condividere. Ma nessuna “abbuffata”, bisogna mangiare poco e con frequenza. Nella tasca dello zaino la tessera CAI e un coltellino. È tempo di partire per il Monte Lema, in auto, verso la nostra prima meta: il Rifugio Campiglio in località Pradecolo, nel comune di Dumenza. Il percorso inizia in salita e non è dolce, attraversando una faggeta, alberi con una fisionomia inconfondibile: il tronco di colore chiaro cenere, il fusto compatto, il portamento alto, come se ne vedono al Campo dei Fiori.

Camminare e parlare non è sempre facile, dipende dal fiato e dall’allenamento dell’escursionista; per un neofita è consigliabile il silenzio per non sprecare risorse. Usciamo dal bosco di faggi e ritroviamo un pendio prativo, sono i prati di pascolo che conducono sul crinale del Monte Lema, al confine fra Italia e Svizzera.

Sul crinale il panorama d’ineguagliabile bellezza ci ripaga della piccola fatica che abbiamo fatto in salita. Siamo a cavallo fra Italia e Svizzera e il nostro sguardo abbraccia due laghi, il Maggiore e il Ceresio, il Lago di Lugano, ancora una mezzoretta di cammino e arriviamo proprio sulla cima del Monte Lema.

Siamo a 1.621 metri di altezza e la vista è davvero impareggiabile: verso Nord le Alpi ticinesi e l’inizio della Val Leventina percorsa dal Ticino, più vicini il Monte Gradiccioli e il Monte Tamaro con l’Alpe Foppa, a Ovest la corona di cime del Monte Rosa; più lontane le Alpi vallesane e a nord quelle grigionesi mentre verso est l’inizio della Valtellina con le zone delle Valli Masino e Bregaglia.

I laghi scintillano, con piccoli brillanti di luce, come grandi gemme luminose incastonate nella corolla delle montagne.

Camminare in cresta è un’immersione nella natura, il sentiero non è più costeggiato da boschi di faggio, o castagno, con rari

agrifogli e lo sguardo si apre in ogni direzione. È qui che, camminando, si può provare quella sensazione di libertà, perché sai di essere libero e senza costrizioni, sai di poter seguire la tua indole, pur entro chiare regole di comportamento dettate dalla necessità di non mettere a repentaglio la tua vita e quella degli altri.

Conoscere la montagna significa infatti conoscere se stessi, avere l’opportunità di “diventare ciò che si è”, come diceva un filosofo, sentirsi parte di un ambiente naturale. Fare fatica e godere di panorami e paesaggi, in compagnia dei propri amici, avere accompagnato chi ne sa di meno e avergli insegnato qualcosa e infine avere imparato molto dalla montagna, che sa sempre dischiudere nuovi orizzonti. A me, a esempio, piace andare a cercare le fioriture dei prati, specialmente a primavera inoltrata, quando ancora l’estate non ha bussato alla porta, un interesse per la natura, per i boschi e i sentieri, che si affianca all’aspetto sportivo e alla ricerca di avventura, che compongono l’andar per monti.

Non è possibile non innamorarsi della montagna e delle nostre Prealpi. Perché? Basta guardarsi intorno; io non mi stanco mai, ogni volta mi sorprendo a trovare angoli, che si presentano sotto una veste diversa. Basta un solo particolare per cambiare scenario: con la nebbia si possono vedere scorci di una bellezza straordinaria.

Oppure il cielo azzurro, attraversato da poche nuvole in giornate percorse dal vento di favonio, l’acqua dei laghi, la maestosità delle montagne, tutto concorre a donarci sensazioni ed emozioni uniche.

Ma è bene sempre rammentare che un’escursione in montagna si conclude quando hai chiuso, dietro di te, la porta di casa.

Ci attende la discesa e il viaggio di rientro in auto, dobbiamo rispettare gli orari, far tutto in tempo utile, non improvvisare.

Mi chiedete la macchina fotografica? Al collo non la porto mai, perché custodisco le immagini della montagna dentro di me e, se gli album con il tempo sbiadiscono, è tempo di ripartire per un’altra avventura. Scarponi ai piedi, zaino in spalla e nel cuore la gioia di scrivere una nuova emozione, fatta di pazienza e conoscenza, di fatica e di sudore, per gustare quella sensazione indescrivibile di libertà che solo la montagna ti sa regalare.

Hiking in the Prealps: let the beauty free you My earliest mountaineering memory? I was fourteen when I did my first alpine climb, with Luigi Ossola, in Val Masino. I was supposed to stay at the refuge but Luigi, who had taken me under his wing, took me with him. Being tied to the rope of a great climber like him was, for a me as a young boy, a source of pride and joy, and particular joy as it was completely unexpected at that time.

Besides, it is in my blood: my father, Carlo - known as “Rouge” - was a mountaineer, president of the Club Alpino Italiano (CAI), Varese, in the ‘60s and director of our “Remo e Renzo Minazzi” school of mountaineering and ski mountaineering, founded by Mario Bisaccia in the '50s. It was, therefore, as easy for me to fall in love with the mountains as it was for my four brothers.

However, you do not have to be a mountaineer or climb hitherto unconquered faces, the prerogative of the most highly skilled, in order to enjoy the mountains. Neither do you need to travel far. For a good hike in the open air, our beautiful Prealps offer wild, scenic routes which must be tackled with knowledge and competence, such as those to the Campo dei Fiori park and the Monte Lema mountain, to name but two destinations which can be easily reached on a one-day hike.

The mountain terrain is beautiful - extremely beautiful, even - but harsh, as soon as you step outdoors, in summer as well as in winter when the snow covering is a variable that can increase the risks.

The CAI’s objective is to teach the techniques and knowledge required in order to hike in the mountains with awareness and competence.

This year, the CAI Varese is celebrating its 110th birthday, while the national institution celebrated its 150th in 2013, having been founded in 1863 on the initiative of Quintino

Sella. My wish, as President of the Varese section, is to attract young people to hiking and mountaineering and to equip them with sufficient training to tackle the mountains only after correctly assessing the risks and with a gradual approach.

Depending on the destination, it is often necessary to start out in the morning. To climb Monte Lema, for example, in early June when the peak’s meadows are in bloom, you need to leave relatively early, at around seven in the morning. The route must be planned and studied carefully on a topographic map the day before, when you must also pack your backpack.

Meet in Piazzale Foresio in Masnago, the

Walking and talking at the same time can be difficult, depending on the lung-power and fitness of the hiker. For novices, silence is advisable in order to conserve resources. We emerge from the beech wood and find ourselves on a grassy slope. These are the grazing meadows leading to the crest of Monte Lema, on the border between Italy and Switzerland.

On the crest, the small effort of the ascent is repaid by a panorama of unrivalled beauty.

We have one foot in Italy and the other in Switzerland, and our gaze encompasses two lakes, Maggiore and Lugano (also known as Ceresio). Another half-hour’s walk and we will reach the summit of Monte Lema.

We are at an altitude of 1,621 metres and the

meeting point for CAI Varese hikes.

Each hiker must have his or her own full kit: suitable clothing for the hike, spare clothing and a windproof jacket, a light sweater, hiking shoes (of course) and knee-high socks. A hat is also a must (I use one made from white cotton or wool for higher altitudes), as are sunglasses.

Your backpack must contain everything you need to sustain you throughout the day: sandwiches, energy bars and, in my case, an apple and a small piece of grana cheese. Other essentials are water and half a litre of sweet

view is truly incomparable. To our north lie the Ticino Alps and the start of Val Leventina, through which the Ticino river runs. Closer by are Monte Gradiccioli, Monte Tamaro and Alpe Foppa. To our west is the crown of summits of Monte Rosa. Further away are the Pennine Alps and, to the north, the Grison Alps. To our east is the start of Valtellina comprising the areas of Val Masino and Val Bregaglia.

The lakes glitter with little sparkles of light, like great, shining jewels set in the crown of the

tea as well as dry biscuits and some raisins for energy.

Some people, who particularly enjoy their food, bring other snacks to help make the day out even more enjoyable (for me, home-made pickles, a family tradition). Every hiker packs their own little treasures to enjoy and share, but no “pigging out”: you need to eat little and often. In the pocket of your backpack, bring your CAI membership card and a penknife.

It is time to set off for Monte Lema, by car, towards our first destination: the Rifugio Campiglio near Pradecolo in the municipality of Dumenza. The path begins in ascent and it is not gentle, passing through a beech wood where the trees have an unmistakeable physiognomy - tall in stature with compact trunks the colour of pale ash - as seen in the Campo dei Fiori park.

mountains. To walk on the crest is to immerse yourself in nature. Here, the path is no longer bordered by beech or chestnut woods; there are only occasional hollies, and the eye can see in all directions.

Walking here, you have a real sense of freedom; you know you are free and without constraints and that you can be true to your own nature within a clear set of regulations dictated by the need not to jeopardise your own life or those of other people.

To get to know the mountains is to get to know yourself, have the opportunity to “become who you are” (as a philosopher once said) and feel that you are part of a natural environment. To exert yourself and enjoy views and scenery in the company of friends, to have accompanied people less familiar with them than yourself and taught them something and,

finally, to have learned a great deal about the mountains, which always have new horizons to unveil. I, personally, like going in search of meadow blooms, particularly in late spring when summer has not yet come calling, as I have an interest in the nature, woods and paths which, together with the sporting and adventure-seeking aspects of hiking, are part of the mountain-walking experience.

It is impossible not to fall in love with the mountains and our Prealps. Why? Just look around you. I never get tired of it and I am continually surprised by corners which have a way of presenting themselves in different guises. A single detail can alter the landscape. Fog, for example, creates views of extraordinary beauty.

Or the blue sky, seen on a clear day with the foehn wind blowing, together with the lake water and the majesty of the mountains, creates unique sensations and emotions.

But is as well to keep in mind that a mountain hike is over when you are home with the door closed behind you. We still have the descent and the return journey by car ahead of us, and we must keep to our schedule and do everything in good time, leaving nothing to chance.

A camera? I never wear one around my neck because I keep the images of the mountains inside me, and if the albums fade with time then it is time to set out on a new adventure.

With hiking boots on my feet and a pack on my back, I have, in my heart, the joy of creating a new experience using patience, knowledge, exertion and sweat in order to feel that indescribable freedom that only the mountains can provide.
