Doctors & Dentists In Hebron Peoples Article provided by Marsha Justice

Starting with the only dentist we have on record is Dr. Russell. He took over an office that had been occupied by Dr. Brown, a family practitioner. The quaint little building still stands just east of the now Park National Bank on Main Street in Hebron. There was a picture taken and published of Jimmie Wright with a grimace on his face and holding his cheek. His appointment the dentist was probably not as dramatic as his pose. Now with doctors: Dr. Henry Day and his wife Mary Robinson of Gratiot, bought land in Brownsville in 1873-1875 then bought a farm in Avondale. They lived in Jacksontown and he might have practiced where a 2 story house still stands on the north side of the National Road, east of Rt. 13. The home is in terrible shape today. They both are buried in Fairmont Cemetery. In the late 1800’s, Dr. James Ewing lived across from the Church of Christ on Main Street in Hebron. He was a very influential person as he served as Mayor, Justice of the Peace, President of the Hebron School Board and Master of the Masonic Lodge several times. Dr. Samuel D. Rissler and his wife Mary, lived on Deacon Street. They lived across from the Hebron School, behind the Madden House. It was a brick house with porch steps going clear to the street. He

was a huge man weighing 600 pounds. He made rounds in a horse drawn carriage with his dog. One night, after returning home, he died sitting in the buggy and the dog would not let anyone near his body. After his death, on January 21, 1861, the house was deeded to the Methodist Church for a parsonage and it later burned. Both are buried in the Hebron Cemetery. A Dr. Wilson lived on Maple Street, north of the National Road in the 1860’s and we have no other information about him. Dr. Bohannon’s office was on the corner, of what now is Rt. 79 (or High Street) and the National Road around 1900. It burned during the 1901 fire which destroyed all the businesses along the south side of the National Road in Hebron. The office was not rebuilt and it is not known if he retired or what. Dr. R.M. Bonar’s office was at the interurban station west of what now is the corner of Rt. 79 and the National Road. Since there is a picture of Dr. Bonar, Dr. Bohannon and C.A. Pence, it probably

Memorial Day VFW 1388 One of the VFW’s (and other Veteran’s Organizations) most hallowed days occurs this month. Memorial Day (May 28th) is sacred for all of our War Veterans, and it should be for all Americans. This is the day we pause to remember those in uniform, who sacrificed their lives in defence of this Great Nation! But that sacrifice is meaningless without remembrance. By honoring the Nations war dead, we preserve their memory and, thus, their service and sacrifice. It should be a civic obligation for all citizens. This is where our Post can help their communities properly recognize the men and women (and their families) who have made the ultimate sacrifice to keep our citizens safe and secure. Here are a few ways to do it: Attend commemorative ceremonies, place flags at grave sites, march in parades, host a patriotic program, or contribute to Buddy Poppies. Take a moment of bowing your head with silence. We, the Buckeye Lake VFW Post 1388 will have a very busy Memorial Day which you are invited to attend starting at 9:00am for the Millersport Parade. You may then follow us to the Post where another service will take place, then, Installation of Post Officers around noon, and we will be at the Woodlands Nursing home at 2:00pm for our final Color Guard function. Thank you for Observing Memorial Day. Jack Havice, Commander

Get Up To Speed On Motorcycles The Licking County Health Department’s (LCHD) Safe Communities Coalition reminds motorists and motorcyclists alike to share the road to help prevent motorcycle crashes, injuries, and deaths on Licking County roads. May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, but riding season typically begins in March and goes through September. “Anyone who rides a motorcycle will tell you how vehicle drivers can unintentionally become huge dangers to their safety. Misunderstanding, misjudging or overlooking a motorcycle can cost someone their life,” said Molly Marino, Safe Communities Coordinator at the Lick-

ing County Health Department. “By following basic safety rules, we can all help prevent crashes,” concluded Marino. “Our message is for all drivers and riders: Share the responsibility of keeping our roads safe—always share the road.” The Safe Communities Coalition suggests the following tips for a safer motorcycle riding season. Tips for drivers to prevent a fatal crash with a motorcycle: Allow the motorcycle the full width of a lane at all times. Although a motorcycle is a small vehicle, its operator still has all the rights of the road as any other motorist. Always signal when changing lanes or

merging with traffic. If you see a motorcycle with a signal on, be careful. Motorcycle signals are often non-canceling and could have been forgotten. Always ensure the motorcycle is turning before proceeding. Check all mirrors and blind spots for motorcycles before changing lanes or merging with traffic, especially at intersections. Always allow more follow distance – three to four seconds – when behind a motorcycle. This gives them more time to maneuver or stop in an emergency. Never drive distracted or impaired. Motorcyclists can increase their safety by following these steps:

ODNR Reminds People To Leave Wildlife In The Wild

5/3/2016 Division of Wildlife . Good intentions can hurt

COLUMBUS, OH – The spring season has arrived, offering many opportunities for Ohioans to help protect young wildlife. Each year, Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) officials offer this simple advice: enjoy wildlife from a distance, and leave young animals alone. Wild animals are born to live their lives in the wild, and sometimes good intentions can hurt their chances of survival. A young wild animal’s best chance for survival is with its mother. Most wildlife taken in by people do not survive, except when handled by specially-trained personnel. In many cases, a young animal collected by a person was not lost or abandoned, but was simply waiting for a parent to return. Many adult wild animals will leave their young alone while they forage for food or to divert the attention of predators away from their vulnerable young, especially during the daylight hours. In the case of whitetailed deer, a doe will hide her young from predators by leaving it alone in a secluded spot, such as a grassy meadow or a flower bed. A hidden fawn has virtually no scent, and when the fawn is left alone, it is difficult for predators to find. The doe is usually nearby and will tend to the fawn during the night. Baby birds that have fallen from their nests are one of the most common wildlife species that are removed by humans from the wild. Contrary to popular belief, human scent will not prevent the parents from returning to care for their young. Individuals should return the baby birds back in their nests and then walk away so the parents can continue to feed the birds without fear of humans. If individuals find a young animal that is visibly injured or clearly in severe distress and may need assistance, visit wildohio.gov/staywild before taking any action. Specific information for commonly encountered wildlife is available to help guide

people on how to best help the wild animal. State and federal laws protect and regulate wildlife in Ohio, and only specially trained and licensed wildlife rehabilitators, with special permits issued by the ODNR Division of Wildlife, may possess and care for native wild animals. These laws are in place for the benefit of humans as well as wild animals. To further protect young and vulnerable wild animals, keep pets under control so they do not raid nests or injure wild animals. Also, remember to keep pets inoculated against parasites and diseases before venturing out this spring. Always check for nests before cutting down trees or clearing brush. It is best to cut trees and clear brush in the autumn when nesting season is over. Teach children to respect wildlife and their habitat, observing wildlife from a distance.

Contact a local wildlife official before taking action. Call 800-WILDLIFE (800-945-3543) or visit wildohio.gov/staywild to connect with the proper individuals and to read about species-specific guidance. Human intervention is al-

ways a wild animal’s last hope for survival, never its best hope. ODNR ensures a balance between wise use and protection of our natural resources for the benefit of all. Visit the ODNR website at ohiodnr.gov.
