2015 Kick-off Event Catholic Charities held its annual Kick-off event on May 14th for the upcoming 2015 Guardian Angel Dinner Dance (GADD). At the event, held at the Hyatt Regency Princeton, those who will officially be honored at the dance on October 3rd were announced. Sen. Peter Inverso, Chair of Catholic Charities Board of Trustees, thanked the event’s planning committee, co-chaired this year by Peter and Lori Haas. He also commented on the difference the honorees make because of their commitment to Catholic Charities. “Our honorees have earned their wings because they have brought hope, aid and comfort to our brothers and sisters,” he said.

Richard J. Hughes, Catholic Charities, Diocese of Trenton Humanitarian Award Most Reverend David M. O’Connell, C.M. The Most Rev. David M. O’Connell, C.M., 10th Bishop of Trenton, was born April 21, 1955, in Philadelphia. Following his education and formation in institutions run by the Congregation of the Mission (also known as the Vincentians) then-Father O’Connell was ordained as a Vincentian priest in 1982. He spent nearly three decades serving as a teacher and administrator in several institutions, including 12 years as president of The Catholic University of America. On June 4, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI appointed then-Father O’Connell as Coadjutor Bishop of the Diocese of Trenton. He was ordained to the episcopacy July 30, 2010. When Pope Benedict XVI accepted the resignation of Bishop John M. Smith Dec. 1, 2010, Bishop O’Connell automatically succeeded him. As Chief Shepherd, Bishop O’Connell has focused his efforts on the catechetical development of his flock, the sanctification and cultivation of his priests and the advancement of vocations. In 2012, he called for the Diocese’s first Eucharistic Congress, bringing together some 20,000 Catholics for worship, learning and prayer. He has written extensively, including a pastoral letter during the Year of Faith and several series of essays on the tenets of faith. Bishop O’Connell has been a staunch supporter of Catholic education, implementing efforts to build school sustainability. His efforts on behalf of the less fortunate include the mobilization of a massive relief effort for the victims of Superstorm Sandy in 2012, an outreach that continues to this day along the Bayshore and coastal areas of the Diocese. Light of Hope Award, Burlington County Elizabeth A. Ryan Elizabeth A. Ryan, Esq., is president and CEO of the Princeton-based New Jersey Hospital Association, a not-for-profit trade association representing New Jersey’s hospitals and other healthcare providers that provides leadership on quality and patient safety, education and advocacy in both Washington, D.C., and in Trenton. Her involvement in supporting Catholic Charities was inspired by her parents’ focus on giving back to one’s community, the care and assistance she experienced as a child when the agency helped families impacted by the closing of the Roebling steel mill, and her respect for the agency’s mission. “I am honored and deeply humbled to receive this award.”
Light of Hope Award, Mercer County Jeffrey and Megan Gordon Jeffrey and Megan Gordon have been married 22 years and have three children, Jack, Maddie and Jeff Jr. They have supported the GADD since 2001. Members of the Church of Saint Ann, they participated in CYO, Parish Health Ministry, and the 75th Year Anniversary Capital Campaign. Children Jack and Maddie completed volunteer internships with Catholic Charities and Jack and Jeff Jr. also help out at the Catholic Charities Trenton food pantry. Megan served on the 2015 Walk of Hope Committee and is a registered nurse. Jeff is the managing partner for the Princeton office of Archer & Greiner.
Light of Hope Award, Monmouth County Peter J. Griffin Peter Griffin became involved with Catholic Charities in 2003 when he and wife Mary Ellen helped with the Monmouth County Ray of Hope Gala. Later, they chaired the Ray of Hope and Peter spearheaded the gala’s raffle and ad journal committees. A member of the Monmouth County Board, Peter generates sponsorships for fundraisers each year and the couple are underwriters for the 2015 Monmouth events, as well as the GADD. A 38-year member of the Parish of St. Mary, Colts Neck, Peter chaired the parish finance council. 2
Light of Hope Award, Ocean County Notre Dame Club of the Jersey Shore For over 50 years, the Notre Dame Club (NDC) of the Jersey Shore has made a meaningful impact on the lives of neighbors and friends in Monmouth and Ocean counties through volunteer efforts including service days where club members help elderly homeowners with home repairs and by performing countless yard cleanups. Dave Heskin initiated and coordinated the NDC’s involvement in the Fix It program and was an Ocean County Light of Hope recipient in 2008.
Corporate Citizen of the Year Investors Bank Investors Bank, headquartered in New Jersey, is a full-service community bank that has been serving customers since 1926. With more than $18.7 billion in assets and a network of over 130 retail branches, Forbes has placed Investors on its “Best Banks in America” list since 2012. Since its founding, the Investors Foundation has awarded or pledged more than $14 million to nonprofits. Among them is Catholic Charities, which had also been supported by Roma Bank for many years. In 2014 Roma was acquired by Investors, and the Bank and its Foundation continue to provide support to the agency.
Client Achievement Award The Gomez Family Olga Gomez and her three children endured domestic abuse and other difficulties until she was referred to Catholic Charities’ El Centro program, where her son Juan enrolled in the After School Program. Her involvement in El Centro formed the turning point in Olga’s life as she moved away from dependence and fear to living in a place of her own with a good job enabling her to provide for her children. Following in son Juan’s footsteps, Olga also started going to El Centro, taking ESL and computer classes. Later, she took healthy relationship workshops, parenting classes and GED classes. Olga says, “the love and compassion that El Centro staff have for people is priceless.”
