or over 70 years, CCSJ has been known as a commuter

campus. On September 9, 2022, that changed as President Amy McCormack and dignitaries cut the ribbon on the College’s very first residence hall.

“Seventy years ago, Saint Joseph CollegeCalumet Campus (now CCSJ) started classes in the area serving traditional and adult students. Nearly fifty years ago, CCSJ became independent and began expanding programs and degrees to serve the Calumet Region. Twenty years ago, CCSJ added athletics. These were transformational times for the College, and, today, we add another—on-campus housing to meet the needs of students who want a residential experience,” Dr. McCormack announced.

The historic project—a $5 million endeavor, which consists of a three-story, 16,500-square-foot residence hall with 20 beds per floor and three resident assistant suites—took just 10 months to complete. While Dr. McCormack affirmed it to be true, she credited the College’s project partners’ support and Hasse Construction Company, Inc. for the success of such an ambitious timeline. “We are grateful for the collaborative efforts to make a project, long in the planning, finally come to fruition,” Dr. McCormack said.

“It’s been a dream for so long, and now, it’s finally a reality,” said Br. Jim Ballmann, C.PP.S., who has been at the College for nearly 40 years.

“It’s amazing,” Margaret Saliga, Class of ‘63, said, as she toured the new building. “Like they said, it’s a miracle and a double-blessing to the College and the community.”

Marilou Tonkovich, Class of ‘90, who had worked in CCSJ’s finance department for 10 years, also stood quite amazed. “It’s unbelievable,” she said.

“I never thought this would be possible.”

Greatly impressed with his alma mater, Zebadiah Hall, Class of ‘09, expressed his appreciation, too. “Even during rough times, the College continues to expand and grow, not only is that true with this building but for the Rittenmeyer Center as well.”

CCSJ faculty member Liz Guzman-Arrendondo, Class of ‘86, has heard a lot of excitement from students. “They’ve been very much looking forward to moving in, and I’m excited for them,” she said. “On-campus housing establishes us as a college here in Northwest Indiana. It adds so much for our students and community.”

Board of Trustees member Vicki Znavor, Class of ‘98, concluded the ceremony with a note for students. “Back then, [on-campus housing] was a distant dream, but CCSJ has a way of making dreams come true,” she said. “As future alumni, you will be able to make others’ dreams come true, too—and I hope you do.”

The CCSJ Food Pantry

STUDENT SUPPORT BEYOND ACADEMICS The CCSJ Food Pantry partners with the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana (FBNWI) and provides relief for CCSJ students and community members facing food insecurity.

Over the summer, the College was able to remodel the pantry and expand its services—thanks to a generous donor, who wishes to remain anonymous. This remodel and additional funds will allow: • On-site cooking demonstrations and recipe tastings, • Collaboration with agencies for improved access to nutrition programming, • Bulk purchasing from FBNWI, and • Increased distribution to serve more students.

The CCSJ Food Pantry was founded in 2013 by the student club G.I.V.E. (Get Involved ,Value Everyone). It became the first college food pantry in the Region.

College President Welcomes Winning Ministry Team The Missionaries of the Precious Blood, Big Shoulders of Northwest Indiana, and Calumet College of St. Joseph have come together to provide support for a very dynamic and strong campus ministry team. Fr.Tim McFarland, C.PP.S., Director of Mission and Ministry, has a winning team that will take CCSJ ministry efforts to new levels.

“It’s exciting to be able to work in partnership with others to create a win-win for Calumet College, our students, and our community partners,” said President Amy McCormack. “This past summer, I heard an inspiring story about the power of three and the relationship to the Trinity, which made me think about how the power of three and the Trinity are at work at CCSJ.”

OUR NEW MINISTRY PLAYERS: We are excited to welcome Sister Mary Jo Sobieck, a Dominican sister with

a great arm and a big heart, to the CCSJ family. If her name sounds familiar, you might be a Chicago White Sox fan. She received many accolades, made a guest appearance on Good Morning America, and was even nominated for an ESPY Award in 2019 for her infamous first pitch across home plate in 2018. Sr. Mary Jo has many other talents to share with CCSJ and is an avid supporter of many sports having played basketball, volleyball, and softball during her college career. She will join Larry Culbachini as an adjunct faculty member in the Theology department, which allows both campus ministers to get to know students in the classroom, as well as in ministry activities. Sr. Mary Jo spent the last two years in Tucson, AZ, learning Spanish and working in the areas of food insecurity. She is delighted to be able to continue to improve her Spanish and to be in conversation with other staff and students at CCSJ.

Larry Culbachini joins CCSJ as the full-time campus minister this fall. Larry was an intern with campus ministry for two years while he worked on two master’s degrees.

Larry’s passion for service and giving back to the community shines through his daily work with students and the community. In 2021, he was a major catalyst for high-impact initiatives during the “Year of St. Joseph,” achieving the campuswide goal of 7,000 service hours and creating the Heart & Hand Award to recognize those in our college community who exemplify the spirit of St. Joseph through their acts of service. His efforts also helped our Athletics Department achieve the Silver Medal for the NAIA Champions of Character. In April 2022, during the College’s virtual week-long Gala celebration, Larry was awarded the St. Joseph the Worker Award, one of the highest honors that Calumet College of St. Joseph can bestow.

Sr. Mary Jo came to CCSJ thanks to a relationship built with Big Shoulders Fund. She will hold a shared position and assist with outreach efforts with the local Catholic schools in the Diocese of Gary and Archdiocese of Chicago, as well as help to support our summer youth camps. Campus ministry provides service to many organizations, and both Sr. Mary Jo and Larry will coordinate various outreach efforts and provide opportunities for our students to reflect on their service and how God works through them to provide care and support for others. This work aligns with several of our pillars—open to growth, social justice, religious, and loving— and also provides a space and place for students to connect, reflect, and relax.

hrough significant new grants, the College is achieving the vision that the Strategic Planning initiative, now underway, has confirmed:

ummer was an exciting time on campus thanks to a planning grant that was obtained through the Lilly Endowment’s initiative, I ndiana Y outh P rograms on C ampus . The grant supported three pilot summer camps that brought young readers, athletes, and digital media “Tektons” to Calumet College. This Lilly program was designed to engage K – 12 students on college campuses with activities that made them feel comfortable in the college setting and helped them envision themselves in college in the future.

Elementary students took part in a revamped Summer Reading Program, Program designed to help them retain grade-level reading skills over the summer break, an especially important goal given the COVID learning loss of the last two years. In a unique program, Maroon Village from Gary, Indiana, used athletics along with yoga, mindfulness, and meditation to help middle school students identify skills, abilities, and challenges in order to promote resiliency, another need exacerbated by COVID. At the high school level, Tekton Media Camp introduced students who aspire to be makers, gamers, content creators, entrepreneurs, and creative leaders to digital tools. “Tekton” is derived from the IndoEuropean root word meaning “to weave, fabricate, or join,” and the week-long camp joined course work in STEM, the Humanities, and servant leadership to give students skills and knowledge that will lead them to success in digital communications.

Feedback from the pilot camps was so positive that we applied and were awarded a three-year Lilly grant that will enable us to add four additional camps next year: Earth Camp, residential Science of Sports Camp that would use sports to teach STEM disciplines, Shakespeare in Alumni Park, and Math Jump Start to help entering college students stay on track to graduation. We’re hoping that next summer will be even more exciting at CCSJ!

s we gear up for the 2022-23 academic year, other grant opportunities will help us serve students well. In October, CCSJ beginsYear 2 of the largest grant that CCSJ has received, the Department of Education’s H ispanic -S erving I nstitutions STEM grant of $5 million over five years, is enhancing our student support programs. The HSI-STEM grant ensures that CCSJ is where students belong. It promotes access to higher education through programs and activities in Region high schools; achievement through support programs on campus, including expanded tutoring, intrusive advising, networking and internship opportunities, experiential learning, and career education; and assessment, including policies and procedures to enable data-based decision making.

If the HSI grants enhance student support, another ongoing Lilly initiative is strengthening key academic programs. In September, we entered the third year of the Lilly Endowment’s C harting the F uture initiative, which includes funding for CCSJ’s Public Safety, Healthcare, and Education programs.

The results of another grant-funded project will be apparent sooner: through the I ndiana P ublic A rt

new mural on the main academic building’s south wall will celebrate our students and the region we serve. Sponsored by the Indiana Destination Development Corporation, this exciting project will be one of several unique locations in Indiana where tourists (and locals)

Be sure to check out another grant-funded effort in the library, where I ndiana H umanities funding will support the new Advancing Racial Equity Collection under the direction of Librarian David Harnish and Library Director Keith Werosh.

Finally, grants are supporting other initiatives that advance the College vision, including Foundations of East Chicago funding for science labs, Brach Foundation funding for student internships in nonprofits, Anderson Foundation support for Living and Learning communities in the new residence hall, and Legacy Foundation support to help us strengthen online course delivery. With our grant partners, we will indeed become the “vital and valued resource” that we envision.

We are thrilled to begin a second Department of Education grant in October, a S trengthening H ispanic S erving I nstitutions grant.This grant, for $3 million over 5 years, provides for pathways from college entry to career and support for students along the way. It includes funding for internships, mental health counseling, and expanded online learning options. Finally, the program supports the technology necessary for learner-focused CCSJ marched in Hammond’s Hispanic Independence Parade on September 25, 2022.

“Education changes lives for the better – not only for the student but for the student’s children and grandchildren. We know this because that’s exactly what happened for us…I can honestly say that our lives’ greatest blessings came because we chose to attend CCSJ.” Vicki and Tom Znavor support the College because they see so much of themselves in the students of CCSJ. They had parents who didn’t go to college but hoped that their children would. They both worked full-time and had children while attending CCSJ, and it took years for them to obtain their degrees.

“Looking back, we both agree that it doesn’t matter how long it takes to realize a dream; it just matters that you do,” Vicki said.

The Znavors follow the philosophy that to whom much is given, much is expected.

That’s why when CCSJ President Amy McCormack asked them to work with Larry and Jill Meyers on the capital campaign, they had to say yes, even though they’re both somewhat introverted. Proud of what’s been accomplished at CCSJ in the last few years, they want to help in any way possible.

“We invest much of our time these days helping others do great things in their lives and work. Helping with the campaign is an incredible honor,” Vicki shared. “We want students to have a great and invigorating place to learn and grow so that they can go out into the world with the ability to make good decisions and lead by example.”

The Znavors recognize that learning happens not only in the classroom but also comes about through social interactions.They also appreciate the faith-based learning that happens at CCSJ. It’s probably one of the College’s greatest gifts, perhaps not fully appreciated until life’s inevitable challenges occur, according to the Znavors.

“We want students to leave as complete, welleducated, and well-rounded adults, and we believe that’s exactly what happens at CCSJ,” Vicki affirmed.

For a very long time the Znavors weren’t involved with CCSJ because they were busy raising their children and building careers. Now that they have more time and are filled with gratitude, they explained, they’re happy to give back to the school.

“We hope that alumni will continue to do the same and keep CCSJ in mind when deciding where their contributions can have a lasting impact,” Vicki noted.

Margaret (Urban) Housinger ‘68

Donald Kubacki ‘69

Alumni Association Board & Bishop Society Member “I like coming here because it reminds me of my college days…I also like the opportunities that I have to always talk about the College to somebody.”

Donald Kubacki stays connected to CCSJ in many ways. His involvement, which grew over the years, stems from a careerdeveloped, extroverted personality and what he considers to be “the right thing to do,” for the College to succeed.

“I see what we’re trying to accomplish here [at CCSJ],” Kubacki said, mentioning developments with student housing and the nursing program partnership. “I like the efforts that the ‘in-charge people’ are putting on this….And I try to help out as much as I can.”

Kubacki became reacquainted with the College in the late 2000s. He was invited by heads of the Alumni and Development (now Institutional Advancement) departments to join the Alumni Association. He assisted with fundraising and social events, such as Railcats games, holiday star shows, and phone-a-thons, and, later as chairman of the Alumni Association Board, he organized bricklaying ceremonies in Alumni Park, meet ‘n greets, and other social activities.

Kubacki also co-coordinates with Dr. Joe Kovach, Class of ’69, the annual alumni trips to overseas destinations like Ireland, Monaco, Italy, Costa Rica, and more scenic places. The weeklong trips provide yet another unique and memorable way to connect with alumni.

The most meaningful trips for Kubacki were always the mission trips to La Labor, Guatemala, the village the College had sponsored for over a decade. Kubacki would travel with a small group of CCSJ family, each carrying a 50-pound pack filled with donated hygiene and school supplies that they’d distribute.

“You wouldn’t believe how excited these kids were. They were hugging us and just having a good time picking out what they wanted,” Kubacki shared of the village children’s reactions to receiving backpacks, sandals, toothbrushes and toothpaste, and other necessities. Seeing that joy and how the College family could help always proved fulfilling for Kubacki.

When he’s not traveling or volunteering at With 42 years of experience in retail CCSJ, Kubacki likes playing with his two banking management, Kubacki knows grandkids—he brings them around the socializing drums up interest and maintains College from time to time, too. patronage. It’s something he was trained in for corporate practices, and something he enjoys and continues to do with the College.

Much of his time, Kubacki volunteers to help build alumni engagement. Things like greeting guests at the Trustees’ Scholarship Gala each year and manning CCSJ’s booth at Pierogi Fest with the Enrollment Department— these things give him a chance to share with people the College’s growth, along with his personal educational experiences as well.

Bishop Society Member “My years at CCSJ led to many years of dedication to spreading the word of the usefulness of math.”

Margaret Housinger donates annually to the College and is recognized as a Bishop Society Member. She remembers the close-knit college community and appreciates the time she spent at CCSJ, both as a student and later as faculty.

“Many [students], like myself, were high school graduates from local schools, often the first in the family to attend college,” Housinger said. “We blended in well with other students who were pursuing their college education after spending years in the working world. We shared our eager enthusiasm, and they shared their wisdom of the ‘real’ world.”

The professors she described as individuals “armed with a mission,” devoted to bringing “a wellrounded and thorough educational experience to all students,” which holds true still.

“We didn’t have the broad landscape of a college campus,” Housinger mentioned, referring to the East Chicago storefront campus of the ‘60s, “but we did have the heart and soul of a community with one goal, the best education possible.”

Housinger began making small donations to the College early in her 52-year career. She taught mathematics at the high school and college levels, including 20 years at CCSJ, and also coached math competitions and was a question writer for state contests, among other endeavors. In December 2019, Housinger handed in her last set of grades, and, around the same time, she increased the amount of her monetary gifts to the College.

“Now that I am fully retired, it seemed like a good idea to assist with contributions to help fund scholarships for students who might need a little boost to find a clear financial path,” Housinger commented, adding that she herself was a scholarship recipient all those years ago.

In her retirement, Housinger also volunteers with church events and enjoys gardening, reading, crafting, and traveling with her husband Warren, who’s been a big part of her life, and their beaglebassett mix, Snoopy.

Marcia stayed quite involved in their two sons’ education, volunteering and working within Catholic school throughout their formative years and into public high school, and she “pushed them,” encouraging them to pursue advanced degrees, which they did. “She respected and strongly believed in higher education as a necessary step in achieving satisfaction in life,” Bob mentioned.

Later in life when Marcia considered returning to college herself, she received grave news: a diagnosis of glioblastoma, a high-grade cancerous brain tumor that has a rapid, terminal prognosis. Through surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, she survived another two years before passing in June 2011.

“She was the consummate caregiver,” Bob said of his wife’s patient, uncomplaining, and tolerant personality.

He added that she cherished her role in others’ lives and served to bless whomever she could through her actions and many talents. “She would have wanted [the scholarship] for students in need.”

In May 2022, I had the opportunity to travel to Alaska with 15 students who are part of the St. Gaspar’s Honors Learning Community (HLC). We visited the Anchorage Museum and the Smithsonian Arctic Studies Center, which incorporated the history, culture, artifacts, and other valuable information on the native people of Alaska. As you entered the exhibit, there was a large sign in a native language with the English translation:

“What you do not see, do not hear, do not experience, you will never really know.”

I spent much of the rest of the trip thinking about this sign. It kept reminding me of one of our pillars, i.e. being open to growth.

Whether it is seeing something for the first time (like Alaska), hearing something that might be different from your own opinions or understanding, or having a new experience that changes your life or thinking—being open to growth is about growing as a person, but also reaching beyond what you thought might be possible.

While in Alaska, I heard about students’ dreams and learned that CCSJ is different. Students told me that at Calumet College, faculty and staff really try to get to know you and are there to support you and “genuinely take interest in you.” During the bus and train rides, I heard the talent of students who are philosophers and singers, and those who are caretakers, coaches, and leaders. I heard about the love for children and the desire to be teachers. I witnessed the resilience and perseverance of our students.

I also witnessed the lengths we will go to make sure students’ needs are addressed and their experience is positive.

It was a real gift for me to see and hear, up close and personal, the desires, dreams and dedication of our students and the difference CCSJ has and can make.

As I think about the majestic mountains in Alaska and the stories I have heard from students throughout my five years as president, I hope that we prepare students to continue to be open to growth beyond CCSJ. While students are often looking forward to what is on the other side of the mountains, I pray they go out and see, listen, experience, and come to know more about themselves and others—but that they also enjoy the climb!

eturning to a traditional ceremony, the Class of 2022, college family, and special guests gathered together at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Whiting, IN, on Saturday, May 21, 2022. The College bestowed degrees on 195 students—54 from master’s degree programs, 139 from baccalaureate degree programs, and 2 from associate degree programs—and conferred the honorary degree, Doctor of Humane Letters.

“Thank God, Almighty, you all are here today, ready to start making your mark,” said Honorary Degree Recipient Dr. Juan Andrade, a prominent leader in the Latino community, welcoming and congratulating graduates. “I know it’s been tough and even outright depressing at times, but you have persevered, stayed focused, and didn’t give up on the value of your education.”

Dr. Andrade commended this year’s graduating class for their resilience and determination as they completed their studies. He continued: “Graduates, finishing what you started years ago builds character…. It’s that character that defines who you are, what you’re made of, and tells the world that you’re no quitter. You are what America needs today.”

Throughout his 50-year career, Dr. Andrade has demonstrated a passion for education which has opened the door to higher education for countless first-generation students and has worked to strengthen the social, political, and economic rights of minority communities.

Dr. Andrade co-founded the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute, a Chicago-based nonprofit that aims to fulfill the promises and principles of democracy by empowering minorities and similarly disenfranchised groups through civic engagement, leadership development and research, and by maximizing participation in the electoral process.

Class of 2022 Valedictorian Addresses ‘What’s Next?’

A

first-generation college graduate, Julia Fugger spoke to her graduating class as valedictorian for the Class of 2022.

“So, what’s next?” she said, posing the rhetorical question that her fellow graduates have all been asked repeatedly, most likely. “Maybe you know exactly what you are going to do; others may not have a clue. Regardless of your career, every member of the CCSJ Class of 2022 has the capacity for greatness.”

Dr. Andrade urged graduates to hold onto the beauty of their dreams like he has and to own their futures. “It’s your time now…and, if you don’t know yet, discover why you were born and live out your dream. Follow the dream and happiness will follow,” he concluded. “Take it like Oprah Winfrey said, ‘The biggest adventure you can take is to live the life of your dreams.’”

CCSJ President Dr. Amy McCormack spoke of students’ dreams, too, and the impact CCSJ has on them. “One student said, ‘I haven’t thought much about my life after graduation because my dream was about graduating from college,’” Dr. McCormack shared of one conversation. “It speaks to being open to growth [one of the five pillars of a CCSJ education], growing as a person and reaching beyond what you thought might be possible.”

For Dr. McCormack, witnessing the desires, dreams, and dedication of CCSJ students, now graduates, has been a “real gift,” same as experiencing the Alaskan mountains with the St. Gaspar’s Honors Learning Community.

“There will always be another mountain, another challenge, but it’s the climb, the experience, that’s worth it,” she remarked to graduates in closing. “I hope that we have prepared you to continue to be open to growth beyond Calumet College of St. Joseph.”

Special guests present for the in-person ceremony included The Most Reverend Bishop Robert J. McClory of the Diocese of Gary and The Very Rev. Jeffrey Kirch, C.PP.S., Provincial Director of the United States Province, Cincinnati.

Fugger thanked her parents and CCSJ faculty and staff who supported her throughout her educational journey, and encouraged graduates to do the same. “[They] ought to share in this great accomplishment….After all, it is the family, not the individual, that is the building block of society.”

Fugger joins the community at St. Paul Catholic School in Valparaiso, IN. Teaching fourth grade for the 2022-23 school year, she begins her career in elementary education with a joyful sense of being called.

“I’m really, really happy. I’m finally doing what I’ve been working so hard to do...I really feel it’s where God wants me right now,” she commented. “I’m also super nervous to be honest. I just want to give my students the best.”

Fugger is the recipient of the Dvorak Leadership in Teaching Award and the Harold E. Burns Education Award.

She also received the Heart and Hand Award given for community service.

Through daily work and focusing on the same goal, they overcome obstacles, such as language barriers, a lack of knowledge of a college system, and culture shock, Reyes explained. On the Volleyball teams, our CCSJ coaches speak Spanish and English, so they can better communicate with their international players and be aware of any doubts they may have.

Meghan Vold, M.S. ‘19 received a monumental promotion with the Park Forest Police Department (PFPD). On April 4, 2022, she was sworn in as the first female Sergeant, shattering a 70-plus-year glass ceiling for the position. This past June, she also celebrated her 9-year service anniversary with the PFPD.
