Forgotten lunches/lunch money-Please make an effort to send in your child’s lunch or lunch money each day. The office prefers not to disrupt classrooms to notify them that a child’s lunch has arrived. Absences/Tardies-Please call in absences and tardies to the District Absentee Line at (847) 223-3540 and follow the voice prompts for attendance to Avon school. This line is open 24 hours a day. Before returning to school, they must be fever-free, vomit-free, and diarrhea-free for 24 hours. Also, children cannot carry their own medications-these must be turned into the office.

Easy Ways You Can Help Raise Funds for Avon! Target REDcards (Avon recently received a check from Target for over $500 through the following program!) How? Use your Target REDcard when you are doing your normal shopping at Target, and designate Avon through their Take Charge of Education program-this provides Avon with much needed funds . If you already have a Target REDcard, you can participate in the Take Charge of Education program and help our school! Target donates up to 1% of purchases made using the REDcard to eligible K-12 schools designated by Target consumers. Avon has received over $7,052.74 over the past few years through this giving program. If you are interested in designating Avon on your REDcard, go to Target.com/tcoe and click on the “enroll now” link, then enter our School ID (46818); this will lead you to Avon’s information page. Click on “designate school” where you will then be asked for your information and REDcard number. Please note that Avon is listed as Avon Center Elementary and our School ID is 46818. If you don’t yet have a REDcard, you can go to Target and apply for one directly, or you can apply online at Target.com. If you apply in store, you can take our school ID (46818) and they can add that to your application the same day. Or, once you have your REDcard number, you can designate our school online at Target.com/tcoe. To learn more about designating Avon, applying for a REDcard, or about the program, visit www.Target.com/tcoe or call 1-800-316-6142.
Abbott Labs’ Employee Giving Campaign Do you or someone in your extended family work at Abbott Laboratories? The Avon Office would like to tell you of a way you can help support Avon. Each year in the fall at Abbott, there is an Employee Giving Campaign, where Abbott will donate matching funds to donations made by its employees. You can designate Avon School as your recipient organization, and help raise needed funds for our school!

The GrAd Lab @ Avon Center School this Winter! http://tinyurl.com/STEM-Avon
The Great Adventure Lab is an after-school science enrichment program that runs in 50+ schools in the D.C. area. We are expanding into Northern Chicagoland. We’ve taught thousands of kids how to write their first robotics programs. We also teach science, engineering, electronics ... and more! We do it all with SMALL class sizes (adult-student ratio = 6:1). Our goal is to make science, technology, engineering and mathematics irresistibly FUN for the next generation. You can read all about our classes and birthday parties at http://thegreatadventurelab.com. The site includes plenty of photos and links to videos from our classes! We are an LLC based in Grayslake, IL and Silver Spring, MD. We are fully insured and our instructors have passed background checks including FBI and state fingerprinting. Our offerings in Northern Chicagoland
LEGO ROBOTICS The GrAd Lab provides one computer and one robotics kits for each pair of students, for use during class.

Areas of exploration: robotics, programming, logic. 1 instructor, 1 aide. Seven 60-min meetings, once per week , $115 per student. Min 11/ max 12 students. Parent aide gets free tuition. See requirements here: http://thegreatadventurelab.com/parent-aides/ This is our core class, where beginners learn to build and program Lego robots using Lego Education's award-winning WeDo robotics and programming software. Students follow step-by-step onscreen instructions to build their robots and a suggested program. Students who are ready develop more complicated programs involving motion or tilt sensors. In the final class, we take off the training wheels and challenge students to design and build and program bots that can achieve a certain task.
NOVEMBER NEWS FROM PHYSICAL EDUCATION All grades just finished participating in Avon’s annual Autumn Obstacle Course. We have been setting up the obstacle course for a few years now and decorate the gym the last week in October. The obstacle course is a great activity to provide an opportunity for the student’s to get all of their energy out! Ask your son or daughter which obstacle was their favorite. I know a lot of the kids like the bat cave. Special Visitors: North High School students from the PSP class led team-building activities to Mrs. Sauld, Mrs. Wahlberg, and Mrs. Bartus class on Tuesday October 22nd. The PSP class volunteers their time in our community. We feel having the PSP class volunteer at Avon is beneficial to our students as well as the North students. We hope to have them come again soon. TECHNOLOGY: Kindergarten through second grade students have been using the Wii to exercise. They have been dancing and practicing rhythm concepts while playing Just Dance! In addition, first and second grade students participated in a fitness story using a web based fitness program called Adventure To Fitness. This is a free resource that
you can also use at home. Just log on to adventuretofitness.com and you can sign up. We are VERY grateful for the big screen in our gym. Having the big screen allows us to incorporate technology into our Physical Education classes. The third and fourth grade students have finished their fitness testing for the first trimester. We are very proud of their efforts! The pacer seemed to be the favorite fitness test. The pacer measures the student’s cardiovascular endurance. Mrs. Steinkamp Mr. Koukal
